Southampton were once known for their savvy in the transfer market and their dedication to promoting from their youth teams.
But Southampton - “savvy in the transfer market” became Southampton - “a selling club”, and in recent years they have been unable to reproduce the talent they have lost.
How did they form a team of such talent? Why haven’t they done it since? What is their plan going forward?
Alex Stewart explains, Philippe Fenner illustrates.

I feel like every team's plan outside the top six is promote youth, buy low sell high, get good managers. Just some clubs do it better than others, and all will go through spells of doing it successfully and unsuccessfully.
@lurpakspreadable9751

Yeah cant guarantee what you'll get when you buy players for under 20 million, even more for under 10 million. Its literally completely random.
@bowser2758
@bowser2758 2 года назад
@@lurpakspreadable9751 I disagree that it’s completely random. There’s certainly a large degree of randomness involved in the development of talent in football but there’s a lot that a smart team can do to improve their chances of profiting off of youth talent. Data analysis and a strong scouting network can identify undervalued prospects, good coaching and training facilities can increase the chance that a player meets their full potential. Having a manager that is willing to give young players enough minutes to become established league players and a good negotiating team can squeeze every possible penny out of sale. No team can always guarantee success in youth development but there’s still a lot they can do to make successful development likely.

I feel as if it is very difficult to do that successfully year in year out. I guess Dortmund and Ajax are teams who do that, but they are better financed than Southampton. Their lows aren't nearly as dire as are Southampton's.

@@stevencooke6451 this is true, Salzburg and ajax have relatively little competition in their league. I really like Hassenhutl. He's been brilliant in arresting the decline following Cortes leaving. Him and Potter are the best at overachieving with the their resources. A golden era of success in all of Saints’ strategies was never sustainable though. As a Saints fan, we have to be realistic about where we sit. 6th was a HUGE overachievement - it’s also worth bearing in mind that was the same season as Leicester’s title win and Chelsea and Liverpool finishing in mid table. Any success is going to mean that talent is snapped up. We simply don’t have the resources to stop talent going to the “top 6” and the best in Europe, management included. Also having been in administration only 12 years ago, we’re not going to be ridiculous in our wage structure. Ings is a prime example of this, believed to have been offered the biggest deal in our history which he turned down “for European football” 🤨 Another fact to show all of this is, I’m 29, and Hasenhüttl is now the longest serving saints manager in my lifetime, coming up to 3 years in the job. Ralph wants to be here and build a project. His work at Leipzig is what attracted his attention here. Whereas Koeman knew that he couldn’t sustain that squad he had without an investment that saints could only provide in our dreams. He went to Everton where the cash was being splashed everywhere. Look how that turned out for them in that period. The only way we’re going to break this cycle and shatter the ceiling, is by ridiculous investment where, in a dreamworld, we get European football every season, and it would almost have to be instantly from when any take over is completed to get the return. In my view a) it’s not realistic, investors would want a less risky strategy. b) if that money is withdrawn, we’d have no model to fall back on that’s sustainable in the short term c) I think we loose all that Southampton is about, which is exactly what the club is addressing right now, particularly Hasenhüttl, Semens and Crocker. Stability needs patience, but that’s not what the Premier League product, and its culture created around it, likes to show.

@@michaeldascrubtarling1610 you’ve contradicted yourself right there. You’ve just said about a player “inevitably” leaving. That’s exactly what I mean. Hence our new model now of offering talented players from youth setups first team football and the top talent from the championship to have better coaching and sustainable PL football. Maybe this season we're recognising that we can't compete with the big boys, so let's nurture some of their future stars. The tie up with Chelsea, so long as it remains legal could be our saviour. Hopefully things are turning around, there is trust in the manager and clear identity/philosophy at the club again. Incoming signings over the last 3-4 windows have improved but we have been hamstrung by previous poor windows crippling the age bill. By the end of this season we will basically have rid ourselves of bad signings like Lemina, Hoedt, Carillo etc. plus Forsters huge new contract that was largely not needed. It should give us breathing space to add key players we need and continue the journey we have started. The squad now has more depth and has young talent like Liveramento in it, so it should grow and they all buy into what the manager is doing. Hopefully as well some academy graduates start to come through in the next few years.

Southampton’s issues with signings are nothing or do with managerial swaps, those big clubs will only give you top end money for the cheap players for so long then they just watch your watch list and gazump every bid you put in for. It’s a double edged sword that no ones learned from Wigans mistakes with the exact same thing 16 years ago. We were put in a position that every single signing we made had to be put in a 1 minute before deadline day because famously Everton and Villa would gazump us every single time, it became a running joke. Then when we finally got relegated in 2013 Everton made the full magazord completion by changing their last name to Athletic, singling our manager, every single coach, 14 first team players even 5 youth team players. The only thing they had to do next was move to Wigan.

Ralph Hasselhutl is the main reason why Southampton are still in the Premier League despite getting slapped 9-0 against Leicester and Manchester United. They sold good players like Mane, Tadic, Van Dijk and Ings and replaced them with dross players like Lemina, Redmond, Vestergaard and Adams. They're terrible going forward but still decent at the back. If things don't change quickly then relegation could be inevitable.
@Eric76
@Eric76 2 года назад
I agree, and I honestly think after today's loss to bottom team and a new manager at Norwich City, that Hasenhuttl could join Man U as that club would be a better fit for him then Southampton who continue to be a let down against smaller clubs when they should be winning against them. He has done as much as he can do and he won't like these types of incompetent performances.

Southampton will never be region where the fans demand top players, whoever the manager will be. We are at a point in their evolution where they need to make a decision as to whether they spend some money and buy better players than Bednarek, Romeu, Walcott, Djenepo, Adams or Adam Armstrong. These players are as a result of a tight Chinese chairman, and the signs do not look good with this new Balkan-Nordic ownership based on recent statements within the last 24 hours from Dragon Solak. It's up to the fans at Southampton to demand investment and not accept £50 million per transfer window over the last 3 years to date. You cannot buy quality defenders or strikers at this price, and you end up with those players that I have mentioned above. You then lose your manager because it's clear he won't get the money to spend in 4-7 months from now, and will probably sell Salisu, Lyanco, Stuart Armstrong Elyounoussi or Broja, who are going to want to play Champions League football, rather than play games to save the club from relegation.

He came 7th with Everton before he got sacked. They haven't finished as high or higher than that since. 8th in 17/18, 8th in 18/19, 12th in 19/20, 10th in 20/21 and are currently in a relegation battle. He also beat Pep's City 4-0 and drew 1-1 against them twice with Everton. Everton haven't beaten them since as well. Not maybe the greatest tenure, but a good one nonetheless. The more shocking is stating that he flopped at Holland. That's just stupid. He did really well with them. Thanks to him they qualified for the euros. It was thanks to him they came runners up in the nations league. Trust me, had he not left the national team to join Barca, they'd have at least reached the semis. The Barca statement is the only one I agree with. But he still managed to win a title with them. You should stop smoking, Harold Fakenewsman.

Not enough resources? They made huge profits from sales of van dijk, Mane, Shaw, Lallana, etc. It's bad investments from the owners that made them decline.
