I sooooooo much enjoy the fact, that the shops are closed on Sundays and during the nights! It's wonderful! At least ONE, relatively, calm day in the week! Wonderful! It's soooo relaxing! I hope it never ever changes!!!! And I love the fact that cashiers and other shopworkers have at least that one day, when they can connect with their family. Bad enough that so many others don't have that!

Hi Kendra, I lived in Germany for almost 30 years. When I first moved there, the shops (all) only opened from 7.30am until 6.30pm with a half day on I think Tuesday, a long day on Thursday and closed at 1.30pm Saturdays. Every fourth Saturday the shops where open 2 hours longer. It took many years for this to change in very small increments. It is what is called the “Ladenschlussgesetz” ,enacted in 1956, it only began to slowly change in 1996. I definitely agree with your comments on the WIFI situation, it used to drive me insane as I needed the connection for work purposes. But I really enjoyed living there. One more thing, the shop opening hours in Austrian towns are even worse. Reds from UK.

Not everything is closed, hospitals, medical and dental emergency services, many pharmacies, petrol stations with shops, restaurants, there are smaller village markets and farms with their markets as well as many machines with meat and food or train stations etc. If you live here for a long time you will appreciate it. Most of the people I know are happy about it and don't want to change it. greetings

All soo soo true. I am also living in Germany (but in another state aka Bundesland (North-Rhine Westfalia)) and I sort of found out last fall that Bavaria is especially bad when it comes to opening hours. I went to visit a friend there and she told me that the stores close like at 8! Even the grocery stores. I was sort of shocked to hear that. Being back home over here at my side of Germany grocery stores are open until 10 at least or 12pm. I guess it might be even so much tougher for you then. Back during the last lockdown around April/May when we had this 4 week period when everything closed here at 9. I mean omg. It sort of freaked me out. And the stores were like super packed b/c everyone had to get their groceries at the same time.. which feels like soo inefficient to deal with a global pandemic.
@KendraAshanti
@KendraAshanti 3 года назад
Yes! I didn't even know it was a Bavaria thing, I thought it was a small town thing because when I was in Berlin, I could go shopping at some stores on Sundays and when I was in Frankfurt, the stores stayed open super late...now I know it's just my state 😂 That sounds terrible...I can't imagine how bad it was with the Hamsterkauf too.

Protip from a colleague of mine regarding Deutsche Bahn: always plan your trips tightly (with short changing times between trains) and when they are late, go to DB office and ask for Fahrgastrechte. They have to acknowledge that the train is late and then you will get money back you can use for another trip. :)

Free Sunday is about 1700 years old. Not in today's version, but free Sundays are much much much older than the Federal Republic. It's called tradition and it's actually awesome. At least when you grew up with it 🤣

@@KendraAshanti I'm pretty sure it is strange for someone, who isn't used to free Sundays. I remember my host sister was shocked, too 😂 I worked at a supermarket when I was studying and I remember how happy I was about at least one free day each week. It's not like you couldn't go shopping on six other days during the week. Everyone deserves a good work-life balance.

The unpunctuality of the Deutsche Bahn also has several causes. There would be line closures, an overloaded rail network and more and more ailing bridges. The staffing level was cut because they wanted to privatize the railway. But what the heck, we have an express train system that can hardly increase its speed anywhere. ;-)

In Brazil we also pay everything by card. Or even just getting your card of phone close to the card machine. And also, since last year, we can transfer money 24/7 for free for any account, from any bank. I have used to pay in a restaurant and a taxi, in a day that I forgot my wallet at home. It's really something I have to get used to, to always carry money around.

Closed shops... This is a where friends and neighbors step in. Most of the time any of them will borrow the missing stuff. But what I really don't understand is why most medical, social, pharmaceutical, bureaucracy places are closed every wednesday afternoon. And having to do phone calls, so irritating. I call the best ones Warteschleife des Todes. I'm sure one day they will kill me. Sunday hangouts: there are so many options, parks, cafés, friend's homes, nature... I'd never chose a mall over those. But I guess it depends on the way we were risen.

Wow, some stereotypes I had were broken. I had just assumed that the trains ran on time there, almost to the second! Also, didn't know about the slow internet, huh. At least in Germany there isn't the ridiculous Nordic style alcohol laws with state run wine shops, all closed on Sunday, not to mention the prices! It's always something lol.

Families spending their day off in a mall and spending their money there more or less sensibly would be in the interests of one or two parties in Germany, but it is not in the interests of the Christian churches and the trade unions. Both have lost more and more influence in the last few decades, you will experience that in a few years you will also be able to shop on Sundays and at night, even if only with cash. ;-)

The cash is king mentality is deeply rooted in the German soul. On the one hand, this has to do with hyperinflation at the end of the First World War, when you had to pay several million Deutschmarks for a piece of bread and double that amount the next day. On the other hand, traders who accepted plastic money had to pay a certain amount to the respective credit institution. For what exactly, just because the shitty customer has no cash? Do you see here the attitude of a German businessman towards customers? :-)
@KendraAshanti
@KendraAshanti 3 года назад
That makes sense in a historical context, thank you for explaining!
@karstenvoigt7280

The punctuality of our trains and desastrous mistakes in the process of digitaliation are results of neoliberalism and nepotism. The trains used to be punctual - before the Deutsche Bahn got privatized. 1981 the Schmidt-administration planned to equip Germany with a fiber optic infrastructure (as the first country worldwide). If these plans would have been executed, our country would now have one of the best digital infrastructures on the planet. But instead, Helmut Kohl and the CDU took over, and the responsible minister, Christian Schwarz-Schilling, preferred copper wire instead. (His wife had a company for that. What a coincidence...). When the consequences of this mistake became more and more obvious, the problem could have been fixed. Expensive, yes, but nevertheless possible. But meanwhile that sector got privatized, and the Telekom AG shyed away from these expenses, and instead focused on improving a technology, that had been outdated from the start.
@KendraAshanti
@KendraAshanti 3 года назад
Crazy!! Thank you for the knowledge. This just exemplifies one of the many dark sides of privatization.
@karstenvoigt7280

@@KendraAshanti And also, that corruption is a far bigger issue in Germany, than many will admit. I've been living on the Balkans for a while, which people tend to believe to be far more corrupt. Well, the corruption there is different. First of all, it's an open secret. And second: It is mainly used to deal with problems, that otherwise would remain unsolved. It's used to build bridges, while in Germany it is used to let as many people as possible grab a piece of a construction, until the whole structure collapses. It's like playing Jenga. And that's why we - once famous for innovation and engineering - can't even build something like a damn airport anymore. About privatization: It's part of an ideology that perceives profit as the incentive, that leads to the best possible results. The thing is: It isn't. It leads to mentioned corruption. Now what is it, that made things work so much better instead? A sense of duty. Unfortunately that's a virtue that market fundamentalists never were able to understand.

Because that was how we spent time together. I didn’t say we were spending a bunch of money. 🤷🏿‍♀️ Making way too bold an assumption about my views on consumerism from a 60 second clip and one childhood anecdote. Also, this comment makes no sense because there’s no universal day of rest in the US. Some people have their off days on Saturdays or during the week...so a universal day of rest is something I had to get adjusted to.
