Hi guys, my name is Kendra and ich bin deine Lieblingsausländerin!
I was born and raised in NYC and I started learning German in my first year of undergrad in 2014. I first traveled to Germany in 2016, when I studied for a summer semester in Kassel and absolutely fell in love. The next year, after graduation, I moved to Berlin to work as an au pair for a year. Four years later, I am currently finishing up a Master's program in Bayern!
Looking forward to having you along on this journey with me as I talk about the ups, downs and in-betweens of being an American in Germany.
Germans that keep talking to you about racism over and over again are usually up to no good ... For versions reasons Exp: Some do it as a way to say the N-word in your presence , Some wanna pick your brain for excuses for their racism
6:42 There are plenty of people mixed people in Germany that would disagree about not being denied opportunity do to being mixed with Black American .... Unfortunately they don't really stick together as they should... Due to Intelligent Social Engineering ... Mixed folks in Germany experience racism just like Black Folks in America probably a more direct tho
Hey Kendra! I’m a girl from Chicago who has been living in Berlin for almost 5 years, and I passed my masters thesis defense just yesterday. I empathize with you and the quarter life crisis for sure. I will also stay in German after finishing my formal education, but you’re a bit ahead of me. And yes, at the end of school I also felt it needed to end. Wanting to overcome feeling jaded has also been something I’ve been wanting to work on. We have put in some much work already, and I feel like maybe that has contributed to the jaded feeling. Things like an abundance mindset and being a bit delusional has helped me with fighting off the jaded feeling. I’m not sure if that’s helpful at all ❤ Thank you for being honest with your feelings
Congratulations!! Thanks for sharing ❤️ your words really do help because it's so hard to slow down and remember to be grateful for how much time you have to accomplish even greater things :)
oh HELLO we live in the same city now :D good choice city-wise ;p but i dont get your criticism, the weather is always great here. yea the recent politics are crazy and scary, but the mass demos against afd have been a blast. idk if youve been on the big one in hamburg too a few weeks ago, but ive been there and it was so cool and awesome to see so many peepz stand up. also cool that everything worked out for you as it seems and you continue to live here! im currently trying to get my partner over here this year from the US and even though its doable, it also is complicated af and a never ending stress.
You're right, always so sunny and warm haha Yes, I saw we had a huge turnout! I was out of town but it was really nice to see people standing up. The joys of bureaucracy...all the best to you two!
I'm an African American from Atlanta looking to move to Germany at the beginning of summer and found this video very beneficial, so thank you. I'm sorry, will you please tell me the gesture you referred to? I honestly can only think of the middle finger?
Maybe thats why u were treated differently cz u were from New york buh the stories of Africans from African countries that go to Germany are quite different.
Sis, thank you for sharing your experience. I have been watched other RU-vid videos. They are from people from Africa. I have a completely different life experience. I do think Africans look different from many African Americans. However, I feel a lot of white people don’t notice our features or hair textures or complexions. They just see Black people. I’ve not had any issues in Germany. I have had people who wanted to touch my skin, which I thought was bizarre. We are contemplating moving to Germany and I wanted to get the perspective of living there versus traveling there. Thank you for your good opinion.
You"re very welcome! Yes, I think nuance is definitely needed when having this conversation. Thanks for watching and all the best with the move if you decide to come
Mam there are condom/sex toy machines in restrooms at many truck stops in the USA, and there are also many petting zoo's... small public and also some private ones in many places in America. And obviously you haven't visited certain communities that I know exists such as for example Takilma Oregon where it's normal and accepted behavior to be seen naked whether at the local community swimming hole or someone out in their garden, field, along the road or just sitting on their porch absolutely naked. In many areas of Southern Oregon people shed their clothing and enjoy "skinny dipping" in creeks, ponds, lakes, and rivers. So wow impressive that both USA & Germany do indeed as human beings enjoy doing same things.
i'm not going to lie for a country that is so developped has a media and business prsence around the world some of the best universities and educated people ,they are remarkably backward when it comes to race they tend to hold very old colonial views regardless of the age .they assume every black person is from africa
Wow was a nice video. And the truce too... I am a black American living in berlin germany ( retired military). I have 2 kids about your age. I alway tell them the same think what you said on you video: Stay strong and always be pround of who you are .
Ofc we have our 10-15% idiots as well, as any other country. My impression you find more xenophobia in Germany than skin color driven racism. My guess is for these group of people black americana are above black african people. Yeah, skin color driven racism exists here, but if you watch more closly than you find all sort of xenophobia here. You can be white as snowman, when you come from the wrong culture or country these people let you know.
As an American, I’ve heard so many great things about Germany. I was thinking about taking a trip there. I’m a college student as well so if I like my trip, I’ll think about studying there to get my graduate degree!
its so funny coming back to this video after my partner visited over christmas and they looked at me eating an egg in an eierbecher like "wtf youre such a weirdo" xDD
I just found your channel the other day and am enjoying your videos and your personality. I loved this video and am going to check out Jay's channel. "Triple the fun" sounds good to me! Thanks for sharing.
You can Never Compare European Man ( German and other ) to american man!! American man and women are lose in conduct. ( sex and everything goes, may way, ot the highway ) very selfish attituda! German Man and Women Respect one another, they also take time to get to know one another . We dont date! we basically will get to know someone to marry someday. Our courtship can last years. There is never a rush. Furthermore, it is a insult for a women to pay for food, or drinks or anything elsee when together at a Restraunt or other. German man exercising headship , not women! They gentle and poliete . Though noone is perfect, there are some mwn who will abuse women, but rarly. German women will always dress up when going out, so do men. That aslo depend on where they go out to.
The belief that there is only one truth and that you yourself are in possession of it, is the root of all evil. Max Born In relation to relationship this teaching is very true. What I see is a lot of people saying what they don't accept for themselves, but they do it in a common response pattern, but they are blind to really understanding the multiplicity of relationships today.
I cant imagine to pay with a card at the Weihnachtsmarkt in Germany, it destroys the athmosphere for me personally. But 8 out of 10 cases I pay with card.
I also love the German attitude towards nudity. Nobody cares how fat or skinny, ugly or beautiful, old or young, black or white, male or female, someone is. They just see you as a person and tolerate you as you are. Back in my home country people are trying to hide everything, which isn't perfect.
