As someone who’s Gen Z it’s not just a millennial trend it’s also part of our trends too. The Pilates princess trend and lucky girl trend all have “what I eat in a day” as part of the “routine”

I didn't know about the ketchup and relish as vegetables in schools thing! Eating disorders are only getting more and more prevalent as capitalism does it's thing. It's so unfortunate

… Capitalism causes eating disorders ! 😞 - It may be a sad, unpleasant reality but i don’t think it’s the fault of Capitalism. It’s unpleasant, yes . . . The correlation between relationship to food and relationship to self & self care is well documented. People develop ‘unconscious programs’ - patterns of thinking related to food, nutrition and lifestyle. That’s the reality of it. ‘Eating disorders’ are getting more prevalent and so are all the other social challenges. But, if your seriously concerned about eating disorders, you need to challenge & change the ‘unconscious programs’ causing the disordered behaviour ?? If you blame “Capitalism” you have no power. If you work to Reprogram the unconscious patterns, you can change the behaviour. I’m trying to reprogram my unconscious programs relative to food & self care because I’m receiving cancer treatment. … Blaming Capitalism, isn’t going to get me very far, , , 1st 🏅 Challenge the Unconscious Programs 2nd 🎖️ Change the Behaviours 3rd 🥉 Enjoy the new experience If you blame ‘Capitalism’ you have no power…

I'm so tired of clicking "not interested" in those videos. I had disordered eating, not full-blown but definitely not mentally healthy, and it took me years to not care about what my body looks like and eat kind of intuitively and guilt-free. it's trash that the algorithm feeds these constantly

I feel like "not interested" does not work at all. I don't get recommended these videos, but there are other types of videos I am constantly hitting "not interested" on and it will sometimes show me more videos like that within the same day.

as someone who love to watch a vlog like what i eat in a day, it is such a mind blowing discussion. i like how it is actually the community, the state, and not just us to focus on our body. maybe it's lucky me cause the what i eat in a day is not from someone who just eat "healthy food" but also the thing that i also eat. maybe i need to watch again to understand since english is not my first languange, but i always love your video essay. thank you

I really like the idea around our bodies ability to help our communities is the priority. It is easier to be healthy for and with others. Food industries serving sugary junk atomizes us and costs us in many ways. Thanks for be honest and open.

Super interesting, Alice, as always. I am the mother of two young children (4 and 6). My eldest has naturally a really good relationship with food. I am so keen on maintaining this for as long as possible. I more or less subscribe to the mantra of 'no food is a bad food'. I try to not even talk about moderation. I emphasise more on variety and enjoying eating all kinds of various, delicious foods. It is more difficult with my youngest who is neurodivergent, would easily only eat sugary food all day and instinctively uses food as a form of control. The first time he used food as control, I was so close to take him to the doctor as he only ate bread for 3 weeks. But he ended up gradually eating his favourite foods again and went back to normal. I now know when something feels out of control for him and he'll go back to only eat bread, but now it's only for a few days and easier to manage. I try not to force him to diversify his food but just present him with new food regularly while always having a safe food as backup. It's really not easy. I try so hard not to instill either of them with food issues. Also, we do not talk about weight at home. If we talk about outward appearances, it is usually because of clothes, accessories, hairstyles, etc. we wear. If any other parent has any thoughts on the subject, I would love to hear.

While I'm not a parent, Im pretty close with my niece, who's 3,and I get to see how her parents raise her (and I agree for the most part). They let her choose what she wants to eat for meals, within reason. There's no portion control, and we naturally have a wide variety of healthy foods around, so her diet is quite good. However, they do control sugar and things like chips, as she would eat dessert for hours without someone stepping in. I think not enforcing strict food things is important for a healthy relationship with food, but I would also say that some parents are going too far the opposite way. Many parents who eat a lot of junk food and sugary food let their children have unfettered access to these things as well, which can lead to a whole different set of issues, including addiction. I think the best thing to do is to lead by example: as a parent, eat a wide variety of healthy foods, and show that you can eat unhealthy foods sometimes, and it's ok, and you'll probably have a healthy, well-adjusted kid.

As someone who once suffered from the eating disorder, you don’t have to be excessively worried about your children’s diets. What children need is happy smiling mother and the home that allows them to be as they are. My mother was keen on healthy meals, however, I turned anorexic as a teenager as my mom always stressed and hysteric to me. Hopefully, also as a mother of two kids, I would let them explore for finding how their body react to every each type of diets so that they can make right choices for them in the future.

@@fmt0htm I'm sorry that you've struggled with that, and I completely agree that it's the parents job to not over stress things to do with food. Some parents definitely put too much stress on "perfect" eating, and eating as healthily as possible, which definitely causes problems. However, and this probably isn't the issue with most people reading this, but there is a huge issue with kids who are eating tons of junk food, sugar, fast food, etc. Without any monitoring or balance and so health conditions associated with these things are skyrocketing in children. It's a fine line to balance- it's important to show balance, not over stress healthy food, and things like that. It's also important that children, who can't know what's best for their long-term health, are guided through healthy choices. Not disagreeing! Just adding on.

Can I send my 39yo husband to you?😅 He does the same with bread, at least I got him to take vitamins due to the lack of veggies in his diet. I'm afraid, me parenting his diet would harm our relationship and also - I just don't want to act as his mother or control him (or nag all the time). I wish I'd know a way to change this behaviour in a non-destructive way as I want him to live a long healthy life but maybe some people just grow up being somewhat unreasobable with their diet without any mother or partner being able to significantly influence that...

When I have kids, I plan to take the same approach as you, but infuse it with nutritional education for my children. I’ll teach them that some foods give us lots of energy (calorie dense foods) some foods help our muscles grow (protein) some foods keep our digestion healthy (fiber) some foods nourish our brain and heart (fats, omega 3s, etc) and I will teach them what attributes each food we eat has so that they can understand what healthy variety looks like.

One thing mentioned briefly in the video is how poverty affects nutrition. I recently moved to the USA and it’s crazy how unaffordable it is healthy real food here. Ultraprocessed is everywhere, fast food offers you burgers for 2 dollars - and can you imagine those kids eating ketchup as vegetable? The amount of sugar in everything is through the roof, and this “What I eat in a day” really make you feel like with a little effort you can be eating healthy when in fact there’s an epidemic of ultraprocessed and sugar

Alice, thank you for this video and for being so open about your own struggles. It’s quite timely for me personally, as I’m struggling for the second time in over thirty years of living to pull myself out of disordered eating that spiraled out of control. I echo what your friend wrote: many EDs stem from control - or rather, the lack of it. For me as a college-aged young woman in the 2010s who had no control over many situations and medical problems and how society perceived me, I felt that food blogs and the sort of videos you discuss were helpful in regaining some. In reality, they poisoned my mind and helped me learn how to starve my body to dangerous degrees. For anyone else struggling, seek help and seek community. Many still don’t understand the psychology of EDs, but many do. There’s hope for you, I promise. You deserve to live the healthiest life.

I like What I eat in a day videos but I watch them for the recipe inspiration, learning how they cook and put ingredients together but I watch such videos from food bloggers like hotforfood, cheaplazyvegan (Rose has been on a fitness journey since pandemic but I don't see her restricting foof=d but I hear some diet talk like "clean eating", etc.), thevietvegan (Lisa us my fav).

Me too! I’ve never took anything too seriously and don’t have experience with eating disorders outside of eating whatever I wanted even when I was 245lbs. At a healthier weight now, I’m still a foodie and want healthy & wfpb food. Exploring different cuisines has been the best part of going vegan foodwise.

Yeah it always helped me with food inspo especially when going vegan to get use to simple recipes that didnt revolve around animal products. I didnt use it to restric and never used their portion sizes as my own. Just eat until full until i run out of that food. However, i could see how if you have trouble with and ED or diet culture it could lead to controlling intake based on someone elses "body check" pic :/

This came at the right time...I'm starting to develop a pretty bad relationship with food. I've been binge-eating for a few days now, after being on a calorie deficit and going to the gym for a bit more than a month, and even when I'm full I can't seem to stop obsessing about food (when I eat, what I'll eat, how much...). I whish I could go back to being carefree like I used to be before I started worrying about my body image, but I can't...any advice would be appreciated.

I am a millennial man. Six months ago I went through a traumatic break-up I didn’t see coming. I still love and miss her very deeply but she told me to stop contacting her so I did. There was no closure. I stopped eating and ate less and less and lost about 40 lbs/18 kgs. I have gotten so thin that now I am trying to maintain the thinness and I worry I am becoming somewhat anorexic. “What I don’t eat in a day” seems more applicable to me.

I had a very difficult breakup with no closure a few years ago. I promise it gets better. It took me over a year to come out of the depression that was caused, but it did happen. Just keep trying friend and I’m sorry you’re struggling with food.

​@@michaeld4854If she treated you like that, then she didn't really love you and you're better off. You might've heard this already before, it might even annoy you, but her behavior or mistreatment of you, especially while you completely believed you were in a great relationship, is in no way a reflection of you or your worth. I was blindsided by a breakup as well, and it helped me to realize that I was so completely lied to for the last few months of that relationship. I realized this person was too cowardly to talk through anything with me, was only keeping up a facade, and later I found out that they dumped me because they had found someone else even tho they denied it while they were dumping me. That made me question every time they ever said they loved me and every display of affection I could remember. These sort of ppl are liars or don't think we are worth an honest, respectful conversation. If these ppl can't respect me, then the least I can do is respect myself. The best thing I did was keep strict no-contact with them. To this day, I've never spoken to them again and I've never needed to. I had to learn that closure doesn't exist. It took me 3 years to date again and I'm so glad I used those years to focus on myself and improve my own treatment of myself. I suggest going on Reddit and reading through any no-contact message boards. And also learning to focus on yourself and your dreams, and making it a habit to do that with love instead of hate.

Wow, yes, yes, and yes! I make RU-vid videos in a similar spirit as a lot of other creators who often post "what I eat in a day" and I have never been able to see that type of content outside of the context that you speak to here (unless it was perhaps someone sharing their unique cultural cuisine?) - it reinforces so many toxic concepts about value, worth, power, and sovereignty. I think what is most insidious about this trend is how it/the creators always try to brand it as "health" and/or "wellness" - it's like gaslighting - which further creates confusion for people who are struggling with their relationship to food and their body. "we attach a moral value to those people we see them as better human beings, as people with character." the tendency also applies to people who don't really see people with ADD/ADHD as a good citizen or human with character, just because their different (anomaly) prefrontal cortex brain part, it makes people with ADHD not categorize as productive under capitalism rules. Productive mind and body = have character.

in early teen early internet times, i hung out in ed circles, not quite having an ed but not liking my body either. im also disabled and was in denial about my high sugar high carb diet making me sick. its weird, living in that between space of 'i want to be skinny i want to starve' and 'i dont want to give up ice cream just bc im disabled watch me eat a whole carton'. it shouldnt take someone 30 some years to want to take care of themselves and actually eat whats good for them most of the time. no point to my comment except self reflection for the algorithm.

If the people making these videos didn't appear to be struggling with their own eating disorders, I would say these videos were predatory. As if they know many people, especially young women, are having major emotional struggles with these issues, and the creators of this content are happy to exploit their mental illness for clicks and/or validation.

The biggest thing that helped me was realizing that nothing in my life would be different if I were skinnier. I would have my same husband and children. My same job. Same house. Your food and exercise are about your health. They are not the one key to all happiness and success.

That's what I love about your videos. It gives me new perspectives into things. For example, I never thought to make the connection between "What I eat in a day" videos and eating disorders but I can see now how the videos can feed into the obsession to count and control what you eat, sometimes to the extreme.

Way back then, my buddy teased me because I was too afraid to try "Thai Tea" which has an pumpkin color to it. Yeah YTrs like Liz Seibert are guilty of this “what I eat in a day” nonsense….she’s a tall skinny NY fashion model who often shows here viewers how/what she eats. Then tries to justify it saying bs like “I consulted a nutritionist” or whatever. It’s like, come on! You have an eating disorder because you told you need to stay skinny for the modelling jobs! It’s crazy!

ironically as a PCOS when I watch what I eat in a day I looking for healthy recipe and how to add more veggies to my meals and as you mentioned we live in such a visualize world so it doesn't really matter if I don't lose couple of pounds despite being healthy not just inside but outside too

There’s also the videos that show the opposite. People eating a lot of junk food several times a day and people watch those with some sort of comfort-amazement-disgust that I don’t really understand. I also think the influencer is like lying and they film themselves giving a bite but then don’t really eat it all? And they know people are watching them with disgust but they do it for the views?

I have high blood pressure and sleep apnea from weight and I need to get healthy so I'm going back on this no oil vegan diet I tried earlier this year. It works because you can eat as much as you want until your full. no portion control. Why it didn't work for me was I got toxic masculinity and fought with my girlfriend that I wanted red meat. I'm going back on it now because I got super unhealthy again. I can't do calorie counting and portion control. that just leads to weird eating disorder habits.

HRV breathing is a good and easy way to feel better. It's just controlled deep and slow breathing, you can easily find videos to help coach you through it for free here on RU-vid. You can pair this with your diet and exercise to both be more physically healthy and feel better. A strict diet and exercise routine does not lead to misery. Unrealistic expectations lead to unhappiness, having a goal that you cannot achieve leads to unhappiness. But having realistic goals that you can achieve and do achieve, well that leads to happiness for the moment at least.

The Persona is not developing at an age appropriate pace, hence ‘Persona Paralysis’ . The focus is specifically on the persona & the development of the persona - or lack of that development. The ‘Paralysis’ occurs because there is a barrage of trivial distraction that leads to a lack of age appropriate growth / development. ‘Paralysis’ is the correct word, if you don’t agree then make an argument and convince me it’s not, I don’t care what you can get behind, I’m not looking for someone to edit my thinking or validate my words. This comment is a good example of trivial distraction. There’s no argument being made, no conviction. Just a passive aggressive appeal to insecurity ! If you disagree - make an argument. Yeah, I'm starting to look at "self-care" differently now, especially with all the pressure around food and how formal we have to live. I remember in 2021, the rise of the dark academia aesthetic was so influential. Everyone was studious now, and in a way, it was a good thing. People were always giving out homework advice and how to organise, but it was the romanticism around minimalistic life and low cal foods that became toxic. You had to live life very structurised, strictly living the same day, and the meals were not at all nutritional enough, it was like people were promoting being a low-income college student with mental illness and existential crisis. Anyone who claims something to be self-care is usually always a facade, so I haven't found myself around that scene anymore. It's like being mentally stable, actually taking care of your well-being, and being "successful" while also slow-living is overrated to a lot and too perfect to achieve. Everyone wants to be in a rat race, exactly how the ketchup controversy is how illusion fuels reassurance

I think that focusing on health is key. Body positivity has good intentions, but I feel like it falls in the same mistake as the very thing it is trying to avoid: it focuses on the esthetic part of the body. By focusing on health, we detach the way our body looks to the way our body feels.

I feel like that's not on the movement itself, bit rather the lack of critical thinkjng overall. It's obvious that you should trest yourself as good as you can, and that can mean either allowing yourself to eat a piece of cake, hit the gym until you crawl to your house if that doesn't hurt you, and on top of all appreciate what your body can do. I remember reading that it started as a pro-disability movement and then it shifted towards including all kinds of characteristics that are considered socially unattractive. I'd say most people consider others based on looks first, but many also don't seem to be intelligent enough to get past that. My ex was certainly not the best looking person on Earth, but what I found to be emdearing was their personality. they're ex for a reason, but still. I, too, struggle with image issues and there are so many things to fight for before we care about looks. People should just change their way of living.

@@mimmikibilly100 percent! I’ll admit I too fell into that trap I counted calories and obsessive of my weight numbers and how much I worked out. It was crazy after 4 years of trying I managed to lose most but still didn’t feel satisfied but that’s bc I was going after the aesthetics! I have gotten a lot of health issues over the years and it got so bad that I can’t even eat much food bc of my bad teeth and now that it’s being taken care of I am still limited what I eat so I lost all the weight I desired and got hella skinny but i realized that my body still didn’t look the way I wanted so basically that has helped me make peace with it as well and now I’m more focused on making sure I got good nutrition until I can eat again in a few months 😊. As for looks ooof I will admit I was guilty of the very thing u mentioned. I was hella shallow and proud lol but I knew at the time to say that out loud of course but I couldn’t stomach dating guys that I didn’t see see as attractive and I had it lucky I had some pretty privilege until I gained 30lbs in college LOL. Anyways I been through it all with not liking my body and doing all extremes (being overweight and now currently being overly skinny) and I still find myself looking the same so either way that just proves ur point and why I said 100 percent🎉

i actually do watch these videos for recepy inspo but what always annoys me a little, is that i do also sometimes wonder what do healthy and yeah slim people eat all day, and a lot of foodfluencers seem to claim eating less than they are. so not only am i not that slim so can't just 1:1 eat that instantly, but it leaves me wondering "well.. what does a healthy diet plan look like now, what do these people snack, how much sweets do they eat, what can i do to use this for my own diet" - and the extremely slim people are too slim for me to wanna do that, if thats really all that they are eating

I find them therapeutic too. Some are super aesthetic and have chill music and I find them very calming. I feel like the creator and a lot of people commenting here are just projecting their own issues with food. They claim they have healed, but deep down they didn't. Not everyone who eats healthy and is also skinny has an ED.

so excited for this video. ive noticed that i tend to compare myself with these videos "do they eat less/more than me" "are they skinnier than me". its become quite unhealthy and only fuels my disordered eating tendencies. also i try to excuse watching this content with me just trying to finde recipe inspo or health motivation.

It seems to me that competitive people vs no competitive people have different ways they handle working out to be “better versions of them” some end up taking it too far and develop EDS others get injured or harmed trying bc they dont have the means to find the best way to workout and find proper nutrition. Either way only those that studied nutrition and learned how to exercise and improve are the only qualified to know what to do for themselves. It’s a matter of what u value the most? Aesthetics to get validation and increase ur chances to being more romantically appealing-or overall good health to keep ur body going as long as u can. I think everyone wants to do the later but feel pressured to do the former bc our society loves to guilt and swindle people to do things to follow trends lol

My biggest issue with these videos is so often they aren't educational, informative or practical in regards to proper nutrition. People who want to eat better need to learn how to do that and these videos don't teach that. Instead, they tend to be more flashy for the sake of being flashy. I can speak for myself that learning how calories and macros work for nutrition and weight loss made it a whole lot easier for me because that gave me the liberty to design my own diet based on what results I personally wanted rather than watch some influencer try to impress me with some meal I might have time to make on the weekend.

I used to watch these type of videos years ago and subconsciously sorta developed an eating disorder. It wasn't until some time later that I realized what I was doing was actually unhealthy. I was severely under-eating, not quite anorexic, but I was maybe getting like ~700 calories a day at most? When I look back it's really scary how I didn't even notice myself slipping into it, even though I was conscious of what I was doing. Really put into perspective just how many people probably have experienced the same thing, but never stopped or fell too deep.

I have a good friend who suffers from a severe ed and has been part of the online pro-ana community for about 7 yrs. For people like them, these videos aren't instructional. They already know everything if they could possibly need to know. These videos serve one purpose. To trigger their ed and kick the restriction or bp cycle (or both in the case of my friend), into overdrive. They are currently hovering add or just below BMI of 11 and I worry every day that I won't ever speak to them again.

Poor Juvenal is always misquoted with "Mens sana in corpore sano", like a sound body is a condition for a sound mind, but what he said was "Orandum est, ut sit mens sana in corpore sano." So, kind of like let's pray we are both of sound body and mind, or "here's to hoping we are of both sound body and mind." As an aside, the ancient ones did like their bodies pretty, but they were also very aware of the fleeting nature of life. So their bodies were shaped as tools, and the beauty of those tools stems from their function as implements of toil, hunt and war. We on the other hand have only taken the "form" side of the equation and are idolizing the shape while it has lost its function. Abundance and availability have made food evil. Scarcity made food sacred. We could feed the world, but instead we make perverse little clips of "disciplined gluttony". And yes, I do work out because a moving and able body is fun to have. But food is fuel, and almost sacred as it maintains us. Instead, filthy clips of eating skeletons. Travesty.

Meanwhile, there’s the entire opposite end of the spectrum in the bodybuilding community. The bodybuilders themselves are pretty funny when they say “the best bodybuilders are the best eaters.” I just commend them for still managing to eat eggs, chicken, and rice every day, and a LOT of it at that.

I dont think the situation is the same, at all. Your body doesnt need to be super thin on the contrary it's harmful. But it's evidence based that you need a certain amount of protein every day especially if you are working out hard (around 2 grams for every kg is ideal). If you don't then your muscles, connective tissue and tendons wont be able to recover and you will harm yourself. To get that amount of protein you don't have a ton of choice: meat, eggs, milk, some vegetable based proteins etc. are your options. The other option is cutting down working out but that's not feasible and wise imo. I'm definietly not a bodybuilder but I would say I workout consistenly and I every day I generally eat some eggs, meat and yoğurt every day and it's not hard for me to do because you can literally create thousand different recipes with them as ingredients.

do you know how bodybuilding cutting cycles work? what you are describing is not a solely bodybuilder related nutrition stance. maintenance and growth of muscle through protein consumption is important, but are broadly related to general hypertrophy and fitness than the sport of bodybuilding. extreme restriction seen in cuts/deficits are quintessential parts of competing as a bodybuilder.

So the thing is that I absolutely see healthy people as morally better than unhealthy people, but this is because of my personal core values. Above ANYTHING else, I value health and discipline so im always going to have a more positive regard for people who embody these traits. Somebody else might really value honesty and generosity and in that case, they'll hold a different kind of person in high regard. To say that I don't assign an inherent moral value to wellness would be a lie, but I think we need to realize that theres a difference between something being true for US, and being a universal truth.

In his first book NSFGWE.IV.Chap.2 he writes that there where distinct excercise routines for 'Sickly' and 'Healthy' men. Women had their own excersize routines (read the book) 4:40 We don't actually know how "spartan" the Spartan culture was, most of what we know came from later sources, and ancient advertisement. But it does show that they had unrealistic ideas about health. In his Life of Moses, Philo writes that: Moses would punish himself to tame his desires as the ideal Stoic. There is no basis for such a claim. According to Max Miller, Livy writes that in the olden days, athletes would subside only on cakes made from flour. But that in his day, these became sweetened, and white. Also fish and meats where consumed more often. Which he thinks is unhealthy.

tl;dr - people saying demonizing exercise and saying "you're fine just the way you are" can often do a lot of damage and is liberal ideology (Alice didn't do that btw, but I'm reading it in the comments) idk I'm just going to voice my own thoughts with little to no forethought.. I'm 33 and I've always had immense issues getting into sports and exercise since I was a little kid. It's not that I hate the exercise itself, but there's this whole cloud of bad thoughts and trauma and shame attached to it that I found impossible to get past. I'm now, this summer, learning for the first time how fun and rewarding it can be to train yourself, to push yourself past your limits and to see yourself progress. I've never been able to get excited about sports, because it always felt like something you SHOULD do even though you don't WANT to; like, it's naturally assumed that of course, nobody WANTS to naturally do exercise, so only through discipline and overcoming your base nature can you "force" yourself to do what's responsible, even though I've never been able to bring myself to do thing I don't actively want to do. Now I'm learning that, no, I do actively want to do exercise, but it was a LONG AND TOUGH JOURNEY to discover that about myself. I think, what I've experienced from culture is two main streams of ideology concerning sports and exercise: 1 - Exercise like crazy and obsess over your diet so you can look good and be sexy and improve your personal worth in the attention economy, like instagram fitness profiles or even manosphere influencers; they all share a similar outlook ultimately; 2 - Only exercise just enough that you don't die of a heart attack at age 55; any exercise beyond that and it's seen as an unhealthy and misguided; any sense of wanting to improve how you look is labelled as "unhealthy" too; these are the people that will discourage you from getting to excited and passionate about physical fitness. All with this attitude of "You're fine just the way you are, just relax, accept yourself" etc. which sounds great, but in practice it's only utilized to demotivate you and make you feel insane or whatever for wanting to build up your physical strength or whatever. These people, in my experience, tend to be INCREDIBLY judgmental and close minded about people that do body building etc. though they will never admit to it themselves. There has to be more to it than that. I think for me especially, the second one has been such a bad influence on me my entire life. It's this mantra of "Why do you think [x] is bad? Why do you want to change things so bad? Things are fiiiine just the way they are, there's no reason to feel like anything should change, that's just all in your mind; you should learn how to think better so you don't feel like changing stuff you think is bad any more." that just kills any capacity towards agency, getting a hold over your life, how to become active, start doing activism or praxis. It's the same attitude people have towards climate change or the rise of fascism. This instant, reflexive rejection of someone floating the idea that things are bad and that things should change, and that a person might have to suffer and do sacrifice in order to achieve that; for them, that's the scariest thing they can hear. So, anyway, I was at a pro-palestine protest. The cops were there, and they started beating us with batons. We did not fight back of course, but we stood our ground. It was then I noticed that, actually, I'm a strong guy; the cops had a lot of difficulty intimidating me and forcing me to retreat. This was a road to Damascus moment for me where I realized that, if I don't make the most of my physical capacity, it's not a case of "ah well , that's fine, perfectly valid"; rather, I would regret it for the rest of my life, because it means that I didn't go for and didn't push myself to do those things I really want to deep down, and I wasn't there for the people that I want to help the most. And also I want to look good, because I never could control the way I looked physically, so I would like to have at least ONE SHOT at trying to make me look good IN MY EYES; is that too much to ask? is that problematic? Is that anti leftist somehow? I don't care, honestly. Like I said, I'm 33 now and only now am I able to fall in love with exercise and finding out what my own body is capable of. This is also the point in my life where I stopped therapy after 12 years. I had a therapist that EXACTLY embodied the 2nd ideology, and when I realized that for YEARS he's been trying to dissuade me from getting deep into exercise like I wanted to, because of his own ideological convictions, while not being honest about that to my face - among many other issues - I decided that therapy (under a capitalist system and liberal ideology) is impossible. I DO NOT RECOMMEND GOING TO THERAPY BTW So yeah, now I'm free of someone else yapping in my ear about how everything's fine actually, and how I should just "change my mind" in to feeling everything's fine already, and I shouldn't WANT to have to change, I should just stay "little old me" (as they perceive me, never thinking that how I am to them might be a very distorted version of who I really am because of trauma etc.) while I try my hardest to work on myself. That's all therapists are good for btw, they're there to make sure that while you work on yourself, you don't accidentally realize that the problem isn't you, but capital, and to hammer the point home that nothing needs to change ever. Ok. Rant over.

I found this video to be less cohesive than some of Alice’s other videos. Generally, though, I don’t believe her videos are meant to argue a specific point, but rather to present a topic & some evidence & context to engage us viewers, and hopefully get us to self-reflect on the topic. My personal takeaway here is that government/society/institutions have a big impact on how we view food and how we view ourselves, and that a focus on aesthetics and cutting costs has taken a large toll on people by removing the connection between what we eat and how we feel in our mind and body

For obesity and eat disorders, apparently the repeated platitude "my body my choice" suddenly doesn't become a choice. Ultimately, obesity and eating disorders are on you to fix. Governments can only do so much.

People struggle today because they don’t have answers to their food problems. What you’ve brought up is really interesting but I think something left out that I personally think is a lynch pin behind this desire to find this healthy aesthetic is desperation. And it comes from a pervasive industry manufacturing and advertising Ultra Process Food. Something that’s cheap, ubiquitous, has long shelf life, is heavily marketed and crucially, designed to be hyper palletable. To make you want more. To make you crave more. This is especially a problem for poorer demographics where whole foods are expensive and harder to find and there’s less education on how to cook. Many of these people also lack socioeconomic control over their lives. These What I Eat on a Day videos are often produced by wealthier demographics, so it becomes not just an association with aesthetics but of success and wealth. If they look like skinny, ‘hot’ girls that have wealthy backgrounds, they will too move out of their lower economic demographic. Of course this applies to all class stratas, but the point is at the core is an addictive pervasive food industry that makes health very difficult and drives the desperation that pushes people towards these videos.

Pour une personne qui a un "binge eating disorder", les "what I eat in a day" peuvent être utiles parfois pour recalibrer ce qu'est un repas de taille normale ou une journée ordinaire de nourriture. J'imagine bien que plusieurs de ces personnes qui publient ces vidéos ont aussi un eating disorder mais c'est quand même une référence qu'on ne peut pas trouver ailleurs pour se rappeler ce qu'est une alimentation dans la norme...

I deeply disagree. I struggled with EDs all my life and it was those what I eat in a day videos that showed me how I can eat well and feel good. Processed food made me groggy, even contributed to severe period pains. Since changing my diet (I prefer to call it a menu) I've grown resilient to the world around me and gave my body a second chance at a fulfilling life (aka having more energy to play with my cat ❤) you are what you eat.

I don’t have an eating disorder but I definitely have body weight issues. I also have ADHD and those videos also trigger my self-hate like “because I am not cooking and I don’t function like this, I deserve to be fat”. Weight loss culture (also the plan with me, my one working day, my morning routine, etc. etc.) are only suited for neurotypical people (and I don’t think even for them it’s not that sustainable) and it only makes me feel guilty. I feel less of a human being because of them. Like I can’t do basic human tasks, hence I am not worthy of anything. I know it’s not true and after years of work, I managed to make peace and find a lifestyle that works for me. But every once in a while I am caught off guard from those videos and my old friend self-hatred shows its ugly face. Thank you for this video! When you explain things in a coherent, logical way with sources it helps me to remember these facts and have more protection against falling into the pitfalls, being aware how they are manipulating me.

Some people are going to hate me for this, but can you imagine how much ketchup could be bought for the cost of a single LRASM (Long Range Anti Ship Missile)? A single LRASM missile costs three-million dollars. ....... On the other hand, the reason so many blacks live in "food deserts" is because the grocery stores keep getting robbed. Crime makes it very hard for businesses to come in and get on with the business of providing jobs and the goods and services that make life better for everyone. When I worked as a pizza delivery driver in Oklahoma City our shop was encased in bullet proof glass, and our drivers kept getting robbed. That happens all over the place, but it was especially bad there. Everyone is paying a few dollars more for their pizzas because the pizza delivery drivers keep getting robbed. ...... There were a number of black communities in the U.S. in the early twentieth century that were thriving, until the local Ku Klux Klan came in and killed a bunch of people and burnt all the successful businesses down. I think that now many blacks have given up and said it is useless to try.

I believe that there are also plenty of people - women especially - in Eastern cultures like Japan or Korea starving themselves, and you can see outrageous displays of material wealth and superficial culture in the Middle East as well

Frankly I feel like you are coming at this from a biased perspective since you’ve suffered from an ED. I definitely click on WIEIAD videos for recipes (I am fit and look for new ideas all the time, inspiration, romanticizing pretty nutritious food) this perspective is a bit narrow minded and assuming

You actually sound like you have and ED even if you claim you don't have one. No one normal needs to romanticize nutritious food. I didn't have an eating disorder and I used to watch out of curiosity but I stopped engaging with them because I almost got an eating disorder from them. It might not be be the creators' intention but they do encourage unhealthy relationship with food because most of the creators are orthorexic anyways, undereating, couting calories, demonizing entire food groups. I went back to normal when I stopped watching these and found recipes the normal way. You can find recipes on cooking channels, blogs, in cooking books.

@@wintersonnet you’re projecting. I absolutely agree with OP. All the people who have eating disorders can’t even focus on healthy foods because their obsessive tendencies to take it too fast and become anorexic or orthorexic. I will always eat whatever I want and after needing to lose over 70 lbs to get down from 245lbs as a 5’4” female, I know what my body can tolerate. When I eat junk, my stomach hurts and I break out and have worse periods. I watch these videos purely for meal inspo and aesthetics. Never had an ED bc I would always just have what I wanted without demonizing it. Your desire to compare yourself to others is what makes you and so many others vulnerable to thinking you should change what you do and eat to fit in. I’m stubborn and am not easily swayed by trends maybe bc the only social media I use is youtube for my foodie desires.
