The heroin chic era of the 90s when I was in high school & a young adult was even worse. You likely would’ve been told to lose 15 pounds if you’d been a model back then. The only way the models could make themselves skinny enough was extreme drug use, hence “heroin chic”. It got so horrible that even President Clinton came out & gave a speech about it. I remember seeing some of the magazine pictures & their skin @ bones reminded me of the starving children of Ethiopia from the 80s. Those poor girls looked sick & half dead, & of course, it made all of us perfectly normal, healthy girls think we were horribly overweight when we were healthy, normal weight.

I'm super grateful I was a teenage girl in the 1980s when, for the most part, models had healthy looking bodies. One of my faves was Gabrielle Reese who was also a pro volleyball player. I wanted to be just like her! Healthy, strong and athletic. She still looks like a gorgeous strong amazon. Once the heroine chic thing started in the 1990s, I stopped buying fashion magazines

By no surprise, I've never known a runway model. Appreciate your candor and willingness to share! It's not very easy to change your natural body shape and if you attempt it it needs to be done in a slow and healthy way. It sounds like your experience has made you healthier in the long run!

Thanks for your thoughtful comment! It definitely has! And it has made me appreciate my body more. ☺️ Being around a lot of models in my early 20’s, I realized that there’s no such thing as a “perfect body”. Every model is deeply insecure about some parts of their physical form. And what “other people have” always seems to be more desirable to us. Now I appreciate how diverse bodies can be and how they are all have their own cool vibes. ⚡️🌸

Yes, this is a good point. I probably eat a tad too much fish because I love it so much. *sushi is my favorite food!! Recently, I have been focusing more on eating small fish like anchovies and sardines, which are thought to contain fewer heavy metals and pollutants. Thanks for the reminder!

3:11 Re "The most important thing is not how you look, but how you feel". And while I would love for it to be that way, you have to realize your privilege here. You have been a model and you might as well be one now. Losing weight and improving my looks has improved my life *massively* simply by how other people treat me, even though I don't really notice a huge difference in how I feel in my own body. I think what you are saying is true if the ways someone is trying to improve their looks is massively impacting their health and it becomes a tradeoff, especially if it doesn't really help much anyways (e.g. trying to lose weight, when you are already very lean), but of course it does make a huge difference how you look and if something can improve your health at the same time, then it's probably a step worth taking even more.

"It feels so much better to eat in a way that is guided by how I feel", that is so true. I experimented with intermittent fasting back in 2009 (read about it in a magazine), mainly to experiment with bodyweight control but it was hard to maintain. Then five years ago, I started doing it because I had classes at the start of my day, and God my mental clarity was noticeably better! Since then, I listen to my body for hunger cues. Sometimes they kick in after 20 hours of fasting without even notice, but I try to follow an 18/6 regime. If short in calories: peanut butter + 85% dark chocolate + dates = it's like a snickers full of nutrients! Other than that I'm a pescetarian, eat a lot of fruit and veggies, and I'm trying to ditch plant-based "meats"; there is just so much stuff in some of them.

@Tiger_Lightning_Music
@Tiger_Lightning_Music 11 месяцев назад
Right. I think the hormonal issues were likely due to the intense caffeine usage and general undernourishment/over exercising! I think IF is made to seem scary for women when we are just as capable of doing it healthily as men. Other than that I think the other points in this video were great.
@TheScienceofSelfCare
@TheScienceofSelfCare 11 месяцев назад
I tried IF while eating more and gaining weight, but 20 hours is just too long for my body. It causes me to lose my period. So now I do sort of “intuitive fasting” with a later breakfast. :)
@xtrwq
@xtrwq Год назад
Most women can't do fasting like men, they also can't stay at a very low body fat (they'll have no periods after a while etc.), which is also hard for a lot of men, but not as taxing for them. As far as healthy eating goes, a whole food plant based diet is best, though a lot of people don't seem to understand what it entails, because they starve themselves doing it (extreme caloric restriction because they eat

I used to want to be a model but so glad I did not get into modeling. I could never be that thin at 5'9. I currently weigh between 132-134lbs but have never been this weight in my whole life except maybe high school. I am 61years old. I became a raw vegan in 2018. Now I have included some cooked foods into my diet. I feel great! Have been able to get rid of that menopausal belly weight by eating a variety of cruciferous veggies, and lentils. My protein is vegan protein powders, beans, leafy greens, some nut butters and plant based yogurt. I love oats for breakfast (steel cut). Will try that veggie oats recipe you mentioned in your video. I’ve been trying to learn a lot about intermittent fasting because it sort of gels with my natural way of eating. For instance I can’t drink coffee (or anything other than water really) with food, it gives me the worst indigestion that just keeps going all day, and I don’t really feel good when I eat breakfast. From what I’ve heard, it’s important to cycle fasting with hormone cycles to keep things balanced.
@abby_inez
@abby_inez 5 месяцев назад
It's been a little while since you commented, but can you tell me a little bit more about cycling fasting with your hormonal cycle? Would love to learn more about it, thanks for sharing! :)
@emkn1479
@emkn1479 5 месяцев назад
@@abby_inez from what I’ve heard, progesterone during the second part of the cycle requires blood glucose levels to be higher than what fasting may allow, and so it’s not a good idea to fast during the last week, right before the period starts. Still eating healthfully, but not focusing on the hourly limitations. But there’s a lot of controversy out there and the sources aren’t always reliable, so it’s important to do our own research. I need to do more myself, but on its face, that does make sense, and may explain part of the reason why some women lose their period and suffer other potentially hormonally based symptoms like hair loss when fasting, because they’re so regimented, not allowing the fasting to be influenced by natural hormonal cycles. Just one potential reason, everyone is different, but that’s what I was referring to 🙃

I love the mental clarity that comes from intermittent fasting/time restricted eating because cognitive ability is enhanced by ketones (produced internally or via exogenous ketones). But a 20hr fast can trigger binge wating and muscle loss if you are also in a calorie deficit. The only way to mitigate this is to ensure all your required micronutrients are included and that you eat enough calories to maintain weight - especially protein and vegetables.
@TheScienceofSelfCare

You are so gorgeous! Makes total sense you were a model. I love this balanced approach and it’s quite inspirational. But for the ladies out there who do IF or thinking about it, I believe the hormonal issues probably weren’t due to IF, or at least that it’s hard to pinpoint that if you were severely under eating, over exercising and highly caffeinating (something I learned can definitely mess with women’s hormones) at the same time. As a woman, fasting to me feels great and healthy given I eat plenty (as in I track calories and make sure most of the time) when I do eat. But I’m also nowhere near underweight for my height.
@TheScienceofSelfCare
@TheScienceofSelfCare 11 месяцев назад
I think it’s a great point! Thanks for sharing. I did try IF when eating more calories and putting on weight, but my body still seems a little sensitive to long fasts. Great video! I really loved the idea of comparing your model vs entrepreneur meals. I can relate to your love of chocolate. I used to restrict it completely for many years, but recently started incorporating 100% dark chocolate every day, which I very much enjoy. However, lately I have stopped eating it every day after learning about the heavy metals in the many of the easily accessible brands. So I was wondering if you knew about this and if there's anything you do about it. I myself, haven't found a dark chocolate with a safe amount of heavy metals, but still enjoy some dark chocolate, just not daily. And I also love matcha! But just one cup for me before 12pm and chocolate before 3pm because I'm extremely sensitive to caffeine, which is one of the reasons why I stopped doing all caffeine for a while...

Thanks for sharing! Yes I remember the day I read that heavy metal chocolate report… I was so sad! I still eat chocolate now, just much less-like you do. And I don’t buy Lindt often. There were certain brands like Mast that were relatively ok. To be fair, most of our spices also probably include heavy metals as well. I think all we can do is eat these things in moderation. I used to put crazy amounts of cinnamon on everything. Now I’m a tad more tempered.

Every single day for breakfast, I mix cooked oats with wilted arugula, egg, a little psyllium husk & dash of apple cider vinegar - mix it up, fry it as a pancake - then put a big dollop of plain Greek yogurt on top (sort of like a potato latke with sour cream, but not :D ). I am wondering if you know the glycemic index differences between over night rolled oats and steel cut oats that are cooked with heat? Do you cook the collagen or add it after cooking? I’m guessing that steel cut oats are better over all but essentially is just a different form of the same kernel. I like the texture of overnight oats over cooked rolled oats. In warm weather the coolness of refrigerated oats is nice. Perhaps the overnight oats might not work so well with vegetables. I may have to give steel cut a try! Yes to chocolate.

I actually want to film a video about making a “rough and dirty” matcha since I think many people are put off by the perceived effort required to make one. I use an electric milk frother or a fork and whisk it like you would scrabbled eggs. I definitely would like to acquire a proper matcha set but I’m currently moving around so much that it doesn’t make sense for me.

As I got older and join the military I had so much food I thought I was a king and it was all cooked for me and so I ate everything in front of me. I was 108 lb and I was 5ft 10in. I did notice I was gaining weight so I cut back a little bit but I still ate anything I wanted and didn't gain more weight. When I got out of the military I would make large meals for my husband which helped him as a truck driver but they weren't as healthy as they should have been and so over time he has diabetes and I have pre-diabetes with a very large stomach. I've tried eating vegan for 10 years and it made us all unhealthy. I tried eating keto for two weeks and I thought I was going to explode I felt so fat. Nowadays my body feels better when I don't eat but my head hurts if I don't eat. Not sure what to do with my eating. My mornings is 2 cups of tea with two cups of lemon water and two cups of creamed black coffee. At lunch I pack a meal of one part meat and 3/4 parts vegetables. Could be in the form of soup also. With that I'll have two slices of bread. After that we'll have two cups of water with a little bit of apple cider vinegar. I usually make it with water and sometimes add a splash of unsweetened coconut milk. The key to a good matcha with water is using high quality matcha powder and not making the water too hot. I usually whisk the matcha in room temp water and then pour in the 70-80 degree water (below boiling). This ensures the matcha isn’t burned and you don’t get a bitter taste. :)

Hey, love your content. Just came across it. No idea why you don't have more viewers! It's really good content. I'd recommend the books: Sell like crazy by sabri Suby (will really help someone in your area in particular, trust me bro lol) Also recommend: Ask by Ryan levesque (Great customer research methods). Ezra firestone / smart marketer for Digital Marketing/ Ecommerce (it's more geared towards ecommerce but that could easily be applied to information and/or coaching business) For top grade advertising learning I'd recommend Jason Hornung and his Academy of Advertising, industry leader that has taught pretty much every online marketer. Anyway hope that unsolicited advice is useful. 😂

Do you or will you share a video on your top recommended products such as healthy snacks, on the go options, protein shakes etc. ?
@TheScienceofSelfCare
@TheScienceofSelfCare Год назад
I’ve been a bit hesitant to do this because I feel like people have such personal preferences for products (esp related to food). But at the same time I love watching these sorts of videos, so I will add this idea to my video list! :) thanks for sharing
@littlevoice_11

@TheScienceofSelfCare I understand. But it's nice to see people's recommendations. Especially because healthy alternatives to sugary processed food is sooooo expensive so it's nice to hear what someone likes and why to see if it's worth buying. Here in UK there are many bars marketed as "healthy" but are actually really unhealthy and have hidden sugar. Plus they cost double the price of others. So it's easy to be misled. On the other hand there are genuinely good brands that care about health and taste. Still very expensive and it's hard to know where to invest. P.s. if you worry about sharing your recommendations... remember it is not really any different to all the beauty and homeware/interior design bloggers sharing their favourite products and recommendations (unsponsored)

@@littlevoice_11 thanks for the encouragement! Indeed-in the US there’s also plenty of health marketing that is completely misleading, empty, or unnecessarily commands a higher price point. I’ll think about this further :)

Have you tried replacing some of the oats with ground chia and flax?
@TheScienceofSelfCare
@TheScienceofSelfCare Год назад
My new perfect oat recipe is using oat bran (less starchy) and sometimes adding cauliflower rice (not for everyone) ☺️
@littlevoice_11
@littlevoice_11 Год назад
@TheScienceofSelfCare you might enjoy the ground chia, ground flaxseed, hemp heart and psyllium husk idea too. Its great with collagen, plant milk, raw cacao powder, cinnamon (also Turmeric and Ashwaganda make a nice combination with raw cacao powder)

@TheScienceofSelfCare it's good. You could swap in a protein powder instead of collagen for a thicker consistency or add more psyllium

Thanks for that feedback! Perhaps it’s just my body’s natural set point but I definitely did not have enough fat on me to maintain a period. I feel like I am now finding my balance: lean but hormonally healthy! :)
