Fantastic Irene. Your freezing dried food concept is so simple yet brilliant. I have thrown away lots of food from my ‘collection’ because it was too old. Time for me to implement your methodology. Thank you as always!
I'm so glad you find it helpful! I hate to waste food but I also want my fish to eat the freshest stuff possible. This was a good in-between solution. :)
You are such an important human to me Irene! Seeing a confident, passionate and knowledgeable woman with a similar ethnic background to myself is a massive thing - thank you for being you! (And also for making it ok to be make up free, or made up, whatever you feel like - ahhhhh liberating
"Helllooo!" hahaha!! I feed a micro pellet everyday on auto feeders. Then I mix it up to supplement. Frozen baby brine, bottom pellets, rapashy, bug bites, fry food, and krill flake.
Great video very inspiring! One thing I did notice though is that you planted the crypt all bunched up instead of separating it into separate plants... I used to do this and my plants kept dying, then a lady at my fish store told me to plant them separately and my plants have thrived ever since. But If planting them bunched together works for you that's completely fine tho! Just thought id share my own experience :)
Your video’s are user friendly and you make them fun, informative, and affordable. I just watch your videos and feel so inspired that maybe I’m not doing this now. But I could at some future time. I’m learning a lot even though I’m a senior citizen. Thank you. 👍🌟❤️
Super video again, Irene! You’ve finally convinced me that I need to try repashy. Hahaha “Happy Thursday!”... on Friday 🤣 - I totally lose track of days during these crazy times as well 😁 I love your tip about the aliquoting of the dry foods in the freezer - going to steal that one!
Yay, I'm glad the tips helped! All my fish seem to love Repashy, but it does break up into small particles easily so make sure you have some bottom feeders to clean them up. :)
My main tank is a community tank. I feed every day a high quality all in one stick to be sure they get everything their diet requires. And in the evenings I'll give them either some spirulina, freeze dried bloodworms, or their favourite freeze dried brine shrimp.
Hi Irene, Hope your doing well. great videos 😊 keep up the great work . Your content and videos are just soo unique and enjoyable to watch. I have learnt soo much from you and would like to thank you for that. Irene I wanted to know when you take the fish food out of the freezer and put them into the container how long should the expiry date be for before u replace it? . And should that food be place in the fridge this time round or kept at room temperature? Also can all fish food be store in the freezer to be kept fresh ? Many Thanks Muhammad 😊
I'm going to try the Repashy gel food for my Otos & Siamese Algae Eater. The brine shrimp hatchery looks pretty interesting, too. I feed my fish frozen daphnia once a week, but I'm sure they'd love the live food, too. Freezing excess food is a great tip, as well. Thanks for another excellent video.
I feel very inadequate right now. I feed cobalt tropical pellets , repashy community, bug bites and pleco wafers each time I feed to my guppies and albino cories. Now im not sure if im giving what they need or not.
Helloooooo 😂 You know when you spoil your fish when they are spoon fed lol 🥄😋 I prefer to just let the frozen cube to desolve in the tank I think you may get a better spread as it desolves and the fish chase it round the tank fun game to watch👀 Never quite sure bout feeding every day mine get a heavy feed 2or 3 times a week 🤔🐠
Haha, 1 cube actually gets split between multiple tanks, which is why I defrost it in the little cup first. It would be a lot easier if I could just dump the whole cube in!
hi my pet betta I've had for about 4-5 weeks and I left my betta in the hands of my parents friend for about 3 days who waaaay over fed my betta he seems slightly bloated not by a lot but it may be because he is breathing way heavier than normal he is staying at the bottom and is not eating i was afraid it was swim bladder so I didn't feed him for 2 days I tried to feed him today but he didn't eat I'm super worried for my poor betta my water parameters are perfect and he swims sideways now still at the bottom wont eat please help me out here i want to avoid using salt and peas as well please help out if you can thanks in advance
I would just keep doing water changes and suspend feeding. I discovered my ammonia levels were going up at night after heavy feeding so you may just be missing it on tests. Maybe add an extra air stone
Love the baby spoon for feeding 😂 thanks for the levamisole tip, I've been fasting. I'm getting a microscope to try to diagnose fish disease because I can't stand the guessing. 3 years of biology classes finally in use!
Haha, gotta put those little spoons to use somehow now that the kids are older! That's so cool that you're using a microscope; let me know if you see anything interesting!
I know that I'm SOOO late but I was wondering if 1. I actually need to have a quarantine tank and 2. What food should I feed my betta fish if I also have snails in the tank as well. I'm probably going to the pet store on Monday to get a tank and supplies and obviously a fish so I was wondering if you could give me some other tips or links to other videos. Btw this is going to be the first time I get a fish and I'm stoked. Thanks!
Great video as always Irene! Honestly I think its adorable how your kids leave notes when fish died so you can be more prepared and not take it too hard. Really amazing!
I don’t know what scares me more, waking up to the drawings behind my door or the dead fish lol. I love it though, would look super cool if you frame them and put it in a contemporary art gallery.

Sorry to be off topic but your skin looks really good first thing in the morning! What skincare products do you use? I’m pretty happy with my current skincare routine but I’m always looking for inspiration lol
In which fishes are extremely sensitive to any change in their diet even from day to day Clean loaches have a 3 mm max size range in their pellets they can't take anything that's extremely sharp and they really don't like change at all for instance they live between 78 and 82° for an entire year and they only eat things 3 mm or smaller that is pretty much the same thing every day Of course our exceptions And not even trying to point out facts what I'm trying to point out is knowing exactly what your fish like to eat is actually half the fun of owning a fish I'm currently doing research on hillstream loaches and I really liked your video about it but all I see in the videos that other people are making are tanks that are basically food deserts for a hillstream loach especially when they're new So I don't know there's a lot to learn
Im just starting up my first community tank with a female beta fish, some platies and maybe some panda Corys. But im still a bit confused on what food to get for those fish and how to feed the different ones if they have other food needs. Do you have any suggestions on what foods I should get?
Great video Irene! I have a variety of dry food from pellets, flakes, Fluva bites and homemade food to feed my bettas. Irene I have not tried the brine shrimp and live worms. Lol. I am concerned they will multiply or be all over my tank! Lol
Sorry about your platy passing. Have you tried ordering platies from Imperial Tropicals fish farm in Florida? The have great platies - a couple of months ago I ordered some different varieties of platies from them - they are awesome! Their blue coral platies are particularly stunning... :)
I was actually looking at ordering from online, but thankfully I found a local fish store who carried the platies I was looking for. Saved me $50-$100 in shipping costs!
Your videos are my absolute favorite. Such great info, presented in a concise and easy to understand manner. Thanks so much for sharing! How long is the dry food good for once opened? ie: how often are you dumping the old and refilling with your next frozen bag?
Good question! I believe my boss Cory says fish food is the freshest for a month. I keep my opened fish food in the fridge, so I stretch it out to 3-5 months.
Where have you been all these years Julia 🤣🤣 such a great video Irene.I really appreciated you showing how to make the repashy (spelling?) Soylent Green.. you might be onto something.. a RU-vid fish food cooking channel 🤣🤣👍 So sorry you have had some sickness.. you are an incredible fish keeper and I believe it helps others when you can share the ups and the downs of this hobby!! As always thank you for another great video. I always learn a lot from you!👍🐟🌱🌿
Fortunately or unfortunately, I haven't been on many long vacations, so if it's for less than a week, I don't feed the fish anything. :) However, if it's for longer than a week, I use the Eheim auto feeder: amzn.to/3hHFtfU - It's very reliable and you can always put tape across the opening to make it smaller if too much food is pouring out. :)
I have zero luck with live-bearers lately. Every store I go to they always look like they are in rough shape. I have all but given up on them, personally.
Oh man, I'm sorry to hear that. At least in my case, I definitely found that it's because of lack of minerals. I've been getting the adults healthy until they can breed again, and then I raise the fry in my normal tap water and they do much better.
Oh good! Since I've started making videos for Aquarium Co-Op, I wanted to try a more casual, personal format for my own channel. We'll see if more people agree with you. :)
Great advice on storing the food and helping it to last longer. Do you also store fish tank conditioners, and meds in the frig too? Can we do that and it won't harm the effectiveness (i.e. Primer, de-stresser, trio of fish meds)?
I have severums so lettuce, cucumber, peas, green beans and zucchini are on regular rotation, along with Repashy, cichlid pellets or shrimp wafers. I joke that I only have a garden in order to feed my fish. 😆 My baby blue acara tank are crazy for bloodworms and brine shrimp.
What would you recommend for a mixed Cichlid tank. They love the frozen food (Cichlid community and Blood worms) but they won't touch any pellets (floating and sinking) or flakes. Even the ones labelled specifically for Cichlids.
Hello Irene. Do you know how long frozen worms last in the freezer after you defrost them? I own only a couple of tropical fish and a betta across 3 medium size tanks and they can’t finish one capsule in one feeding :)
An interesting thought just came through my mind and reminds me of my early days of fishing with my wife. When we had no money at all we go from fish store to fish store looking to see what they had to see if they had anything exceptional that we might want. But I have a feeling people today don't do as much traveling for fish as I used to so maybe a thought on how people that are going to peruse a fish store in contrast to the average customer. Maybe when I'm talking about is the local customer versus the fish tourist. On myself like to wait till they're done helping local customers and then ask my questions and I assume that most people would do this instead of demanding to be the first in line for attention even though you're not intending to buy a whole lot. In the end I get to know my local fish shops and I consider that within 50 mi I get to know what that shopkeeper likes dislikes as far as fit fish and whether or not he'd be interested in fish that I have for sale or if they're particularly looking for anything. Even to the point where if I'm looking for a specific fish I can ask them if they've ever run into it and sometimes I get a yes it's the fruit. That's how I found my first emerald green - corridors back in 1984 back when those were unheard of but one guy in bend Oregon had a couple and I had to drive them back three hours to my fish tank. So maybe a thought on the Aquarius visiting shops. I know this is probably not in your usual range of topics
