What do you think about gatekeeping in the BuJo community and in general? Have you experienced gatekeeping in your own life? I'd love t hear your thoughts and discuss in the comments down below.

Hey y’all! There seems to be some confusion, so I’d like to clarify a few things. In no way am I comparing or equating the gatekeeping experienced by asexual people from the LGBTQIA community with gatekeeping in the bullet journal community. I simply used this example (and the vegan example) to help explain the concept of gatekeeping before jumping in to the main topic of the video. While all examples listed in this video can be classified as gatekeeping, that doesn’t mean they are equal in severity/importance (nor did I try to make that point). Just as two things can be called an insult and not be the same degree of insult, two things can be gatekeeping without being the same degree of gatekeeping (and without holding the same significance). I hope this helps! I also wanted to add, as I have seen a number of people claiming that asexual people are not part of the LGBTQIA community (which is ironically exactly the gatekeeping I was referring to in the video): It is my understanding, from my research, that many asexual people consider themselves part of the LGBTQIA (a for asexual) community as their sexuality (or lack thereof) is viewed as atypical in society. Trans people who are straight are still part of the LBGTQIA community because they are trans, and asexual people (even those who are heteroromantic) are still part of the LGBTQIA community because they are asexual. Again, I hope this clears this up! I never expected this video to go viral and I clearly should have been even more explicit in my use of language to avoid misunderstanding. Thank you for all of the support and thoughtful discussion surrounding this topic! ❤️

The only problem is if the creativity gets in the way of productivity - if it doesn't, if it replenishes you even, then you're fine sis. But some people (inc. lifestyle and study creators) feel pressured to constantly do a pretty spread because that's what their audience wants, and pressure and anxiety over doing something like a spread is not the purpose of bullet-journaling. It is to be productive - and like people above here say, if creativity is your thing that makes you happy and relaxed, enabling you to do your tasks with greater happiness, that's productive.

I am an extremely minimalist bullet journal-er who adores looking at all the artistic bullet journals on RU-vid and Instagram. I often feel like my own very minimal and monochromatic journal doesn't have a place in the community, because the community seems to favor the artistic and bold. And to be made to feel that way is nonsense. Bullet journals come in all shapes and sizes, and they are all valid.

Gatekeeping is one of the reasons why I generally dislike humans. I’ve joined many hobbies over the years, and I’ve experienced this over and over and over and over. Some people are just unable to feel good about themselves UNLESS they can peer down their noses at others. There ARE NO RULES for hobbies. You do YOU...I will do ME. Whatever I want to do and call it bullet journaling...that is FINE. I don’t need anyone to agree with me. Gatekeeping is one of the most superficial, goofy, immature, and anti social behaviors one can manifest towards others.

Same for me as well. I am always seeing gatekeeping in all my hobbies. Or people who like to devalue what you do to make themselves feel better. For example, in my watercolor group I posted pics of my new gallery wall in my dining room I just updated with my own paintings. Most of them are tutorials from the company whose group I am in, and several of those use an outline. Someone commented and asked, "Did you do those all free hand?" And then proceeded to say it wasn't good art unless I freehanded it. I responded that some I did, but others came with an outline. And left it at that. A few other members roasted this girl though, and I thought it was hilarious! One said, "so if someone bakes something you like, do you ask them if they used a recipe?" LOL! The girl's comment didn't bother me, because I am confident in my craft, but can you imagine if it was a brand new painter and new to the community? Some people would give up, thinking that their art is not worth something because they used an outline. Its really frustrating.

juliababyjen Jenny - Yes, great point about being new...people don’t realize sometimes how HURTFUL words can be. The whole “sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me” is cataclysmically false. Often I’d rather someone just punch me in the head...rather than have my feelings hurt in some ways. Sometimes a comment can completely destroy any confidence you ever had. I remember about 20 years ago, I started a journal of my thoughts...and a friend happened to pick it up before I could stop them from reading it, and the person quoted my first line in this sing-song voice, mocking what I’d written. I’ve STILL never forgotten how stupid that made me feel, how small it made me feel, and how painful that was. It stayed with me for weeks. The person had no idea how hurtful that was.

I'm nearly 62 years old and for all of my adult life and a good part of my childhood I kept "Doodle-Do" notebooks (that's what I've always called 'em) ... Each day I'd start a new page with my to-do list, weather info, or other information pertinent to the day or my well-being .... I'd doodle on this page(s) as I was on the phone, taking notes about my contacts, the day, my kids, the husband's work as it impacted my day ... I found "bullet journaling" about 5 years ago - This "system" gave more structure to my "dos" but continue to house my "doodles" too. Different strokes for different folks! The biggest problem with gatekeeping is that it always hurts marginalized people the most. Not counting audiobooks as “real books” hurts dyslexic people, excluding asexual people from LGBT+ means they are more likely to be abused by straight people with no protection from the community, saying you have to play difficult games to be a “real gamer” excludes disabled people and anyone who doesn’t have endless time such as people working 2 jobs etc.

I hate the audiobook one! If you're listening to a story, you're still consuming the damn story! You know everything that happens in a book just the same as someone who has read it with their eyes!

Audio books are real books, they've been created from real books for those who maybe don't like looking at a real book, don't have the time or can't etc. Take a blind person, unless they use braille that's the only way they can actually read a book, so yes, audio books are real books.

The trans community has legal and medical gatekeeping by people from outside of the community... The government saying "you have to 'medically transition' before you you can change your gender markers". The government saying we don't recognize your non-binary gender. A letter from a doctor saying this person is trans before they can change their gender market on their driver's license. Having to see a psychiatrist for X amount of mouths before they will even give you that letter. Having to have a doctor decide if you are "trans enough". Doctors not recognizing non-binary identities and that someone who is non-binary might what to go on a low dose of hormones. People not realizing that there are trans people that don't want to physically transition at all. Money is also a gatekeeper for the trans and lots of other companies too. Because a lot of times to find a key to that gate it also involves money. Some times I feel like focusing on the outside gatekeepers might be a more productive fight then the inside ones. Because while gatekeepers inside the commissary suck they are probably easier to fix, because they probably have more in common. It probably also depends on the community too.

I’ll be honest, when I first started becoming interested in bullet journaling, I became extremely overwhelmed with the artistry. So many journals looked so beautiful and artistic and it made me feel as though I could never live up to that standard. But then one day💡I realized that all of those journals had nothing to do with me and that I was projecting a fear or frustration onto a community of people who 🗣 HAVE NO IDEA WHO I AM! I don’t have to use any of them. I don’t have to mimic the spreads. I don’t have to use watercolor or buy the same journal or create my spreads at the same time. I don’t have to do any of that. What I need to do is do what works for me. So I found bujos that were more minimalist in their approach and it was great for me. But I still like watching other bujo vids because a) it’s cool to see someone enjoy their passions and talents b) I could be missing out on a great idea or spread or log. It just seems that gatekeeping is all projection. And it’s annoying. Because honestly, if you did all of the same stuff, but never shared it, would anyone be bothered??
@user-nv7uq3zj5e
@user-nv7uq3zj5e 4 года назад
I wish people realised this more. Imma just copy what I put in a another relevant comment here: Let's be honest, we all got introduced to bujo _though_ the aesthetic spreads, _not_ through the original creator 😂 So it does (unintentionally, but still) warp our perceptions, because despite insisting "you don't have to follow me!" and "you don't have to be as creative!", unless you dig, you almost never see the 'minimal' ones. And what does this do? Lead you to believe that bujo'ing is all about creativity and aesthetics, and into impostor syndrome. There unfortunately is a very real, unspoken pressure in the community, especially to those who are not as talented with handwriting or painting to be _either_ 'aesthetically' minimalist or artistic. Sadly this pressure blinds people *even when told* that it doesn't have to be a certain way. If only people realised that 1. The original creator exists, please see what they have said on the topic and 2. That of course the most popular bujo inspo would be the gorgeous, laborious ones - we need to educate not just ourselves but others' perceptions of what a bullet journal truly is and is meant to be.

It's called "elitism," and, in my opinion, just shows how insecure people are about their own choices. We are all different, have different likes and dislikes. People need to stop trying to make everyone else like themselves. It's not going to happen, and only creates unhappiness. There is a need for a certain amount of conformity (that's where laws and rules come in), but individuality and diversity is what makes this world so fun and exciting. Too much conformity leads to stagnation.

..Someone really commented on the colour of your supplies and how long your nails are? Lmao. Something I see / hear people say a lot is that "it takes longer to set all those pages up, you're wasting time. A bujo is for productivity and you're not being productive!" It kind of ignores that some people use that time as their me-time, some time to just relax and just have fun. I don't really get why some people care about what other people do in their bullet journal. It literally does not affect me how someone else does their bullet journalling, so why do others care what I'm doing in mine? WEIRD. Gatekeeping is an issue everywhere and it's just such a sad thing. I wish it just didn't happen. The world would be a lot more fun if that didn't happer!

If someone says you aren't being productive by turning your bujo into a piece of art, what they mean is you aren't being productive in the way they want you to be. Producing art is still producing something... my bujo is plain and filled with chicken scrawl, so they end up in the trash more often than not once I'm done with them. One could argue this is less productive than someone creating something artistic that their children can cherish one day when Mom (or Dad) is gone...

I do kind of get what they mean, but if you can afford to set aside time in your routine to be creative then the opportunity cost is pretty much negligible. Plus, some bullet journals are centered around creative topics specifically (like movie/anime/game/music tracking) so it fits right in.

When I first started bullet journalling, I did all the doodles, colors, the whole Instagram thing basically. But after 1 year of doing all that, I couldn't do it anymore. I got tired of making my bujo pretty and aesthetic. Now, my bujo is pretty minimal with just colors highlighting each month. Coincidentally, alot of the Bujo RU-vidrs I follow have felt the same way; that they've been only caring about how their Bujo looks for Instagram and RU-vid instead of for themselves and they've been changing it.

Gatekeeping is absolutely everywhere. You can't be a real Star Wars fan if you've only seen the films and haven't read any of the books. I'm a book blogger and have seen so many comments that you have to behave in a certain way to be taken seriously. I've never understood why people feel the need to comment in this way; if you don't like something just move on. Rant over. I've only just found your channel and think your work is beautiful. This! The level of gatekeeping in the video game world is so high it would almost be laughable, if it didn’t manifest as rampant toxicity. As mentioned in the video, there are much deeper psychological patterns at play in a person who gatekeeps. That being said, it’s so infuriating and sad that that type of person feels like the only way they can enjoy their hobby is to simultaneously put other people down.

I’m an engineering student and I can’t even count the amount of discrediting and or passive aggressive comments I’ve gotten these past 3 years. It sucks. It fuels the “I’m not good enough” feelings I have to continually fight against. I’ve almost quit because of those comments. But I know that I am doing what I love and how I do things brings a valuable perspective as a human being regardless. I go back to this saying a lot. “I am an engineer that happens to be a woman, Hispanic .. etc insert labels”. I do understand that credibility is important but damn why judge and make assumptions based off of appearance? Not everyone grew up the same way, looks the same, and thinks that same. It takes bravery and courage to be vulnerable and admit ones assumptions and understand everyone’s assumption in a meaningful and constructive way. That’s why videos like these are important. They open up conversations that help people share who they are and what they stand for instead of allowing this community to continue to discredit or invalidate people with a different perspective. So, rock on Elizabeth!

Selena Torres it’s so sad to hear that the gender bias is still running strong. I was a returning college student in the early 80s and earned two degrees simultaneously in Accounting and Economics (yes a BA and a BS NOT a double major) meanwhile tutoring in Statistics and teaching basic computer skills to primarily men -!and when I went out into the field with my 3.65 GPA- I couldn’t get work with the big firms because - o horror - I was also a wife and mother do I wouldn’t be able to dedicate myself to the job the way a man could. It didn’t matter the workload I managed for my four years at school - oh I was a wife and mother then too (started when our daughter was just 3 and son at 18mo). And I worked as a bookkeeper for a dozen restaurants and tutored and studied and laundry, dishes, meals etc. Fortunately I was and still am married to an amazing man who has always supported my ambitions and accepted I was going to have a career not just a job. But it sounds like gender bias is still running rampant. It’s up to us to teach our sons and daughters that gender is NOT a discriminatory issue - girls are plenty strong, smart, ambitious!

I'm not even half-way through the video and i'm already shaking my head at the comment section and the video itself, thinking "why?" The fact that bullying (Gatekeeping) exist in such a beautiful (maybe cut-throat because of the artistic competitiveness) community, i am completely astound, yet mind blown. I can't stand for bullying because of my own past experience, therefore i advocate for it. Now thinking of what gatekeeping means, i'm almost certain that this is what had happened. I have a common interest in health and the field of medicine, to the point i was ready to enrol in a degree of nursing. I was excited and i was ready to start (even wanted to do a Med degree as well), now i went and told my job-provider since being unemployed that i was wanting to a degree in nursing. He had managed to worm his way inside my brain and plant the seed-of-doubt and started to say things such as "you wouldn't survive the degree", "you would'nt like/survive the job etc. Eventually in the end he had done what he wanted and made me believe that it wasn't right for me when i knew personally that it was something that i wanted and was made to believe that is was something that i wouldn't cope with. Now when i look back on it i'm so bloody pissed that he had done what he done and got what he wanted and now he trying to put me in bloody jobs that i clearly don't want to do or have now interest in. It's a shame that this type of attitude still exist this day, but unfortunately it can't be stopped, even when we close our eyes and try hard enough and hope this this will go, but it won't. So Selena Torres, you be you and you and be that god damm engineer that you want to be, because no one is going to stop you at all!!!!!

I think gatekeepers are insecure. They've got "imposter syndrome" and so they point at others to say "I fall on the "right" side of the line, and they don't, so I'm real and they aren't." I see it in the witch community (at least on line, not in person). If you're Wiccan, you're not a "real" witch. If you don't curse, you're not a "real" witch. If you like a certain author...well, you get the idea. Just as insecurity is the basis for gatekeeping (at least, as I see it) confidence is the antidote. When I'm confident, I don't care what other people say. Sadly, I'm not always confident :) But I'm getting there!

Yes! i see this everyday at facebook groups, specially some of them that are "themed", in example, minimalist bullet journal groups. I consider my bullet journal quite minimalist, but I do monthly covers... people in those groups are pretty savage about some bujos not being "minimalist enough..." I mean ... ¿where do you draw the line? I also read a while ago a blog post y Ryder Carroll about his concerns on the matter, it was titled "back to the basics", and tackles both sides of the coin: people feeling overwhelmed about all the gorgeous spreads out there, and others quiting bujoing because "they are not getting many likes". I copy what I think is the main point here: "The power of the Bullet Journal is that it will become whatever you focus on. Focusing on what you see online, can have a powerful influence on how you define your approach, your ability, and your success. By all means, learn from others. The strength of this community is its unending creativity and willingness to share solutions to universal challenges. Just be mindful about what you adopt into your own practice. It’s the difference between “My BuJo needs to look like that” vs “How can my Bullet Journal best serve me?” or “Oh, look at all these habits I could be tracking!” vs “What habits would add the most value to my life?”"

I'm in a couple "minimalist mom" groups on Facebook and there are so many minimalist gatekeepers in there. Someone will complain about how so-and-so's bathroom isn't minimalist enough, others will complain it's too minimalist. It's so stupid! Most people in these communities are great and will happily put the gatekeepers in their place. Minimalism, bullet journaling, etc have different meanings for different people. It would be really freaking boring if everyone did the exact same thing. It wouldn't be enjoyable or a hobby anymore. It's really not that hard to let people enjoy their things and stay in your own late. End rant lol

I am the same way! I like to do a monthly cover because I like to paint/illustrate and I like quotes, but the rest I keep minimal because a lot of doodles which doesn't help with the "planning" doesn't work for me. If I don't remember it wrong ryan and joshua (the two dudes from the minimalist documentary) explained minimalism as something like the point of minimalism isn't owning less things it's having things which serves a purpose. For example, if you like reading books of course it's okay to have books, but if you're collecting stamps and you have no interest in stamps then you shouldn't keep them. I don't remember exactly what they said because it was some time ago I watched it but maybe you get my point anyways😅

Coming at this from a planner community perspective, I used to think that it made sense to distinguish between classic Ryder Carroll bullet journalling and the "Instagram School of Bujo". Like others here have said, the latter type can seem really overwhelming to someone who just wants an easy way to manage their todo list! However I've come to see that it's much more of a spectrum, and wherever you draw the line, someone's going to say you drew it in the wrong place. Personally, for everyday task management I like a really plain layout because it's not something I plan on keeping (I have separate written journals and sketchbooks), but for others, their bujo is also a memory-keeping journal. I think it helps to be clear about what you want (and need) out of your bullet journal, instead of adopting a particular style just because it's trendy.

I used to work at GameStop. As a woman, there seems to be a credibility issue simply because of my gender. I found I would either have to "prove" that I actually like video games, or they would just insist on talking to "one of the guys" for a simple question that anyone could have answered ("what time do you close?" "When is x preorder coming in?" Etc.) I'm a bit of a mole person now so I find it really hard to be around people lol. I posted a couple of videos on RU-vid (bujo speedpaints) so my imposter syndrome is talking loudly in my ear right now, but no one's watching them so I guess I have nothing to worry about lol! 🙃 Can't wait for the next bujo babble! I have only recommended that people focus on Ryder’s method when they get frustrated because they sometimes think they HAVE to be artsy to bujo when his intention is to have a super minimal process. I see way more people leaving the bujo community because the art gets so intense and they feel pressured to make theirs pretty and perfect. I personally love to add art but because I’ve watched so many videos on other artsy bujos I began to feel pressure to make my spreads a certain way and super planned out. I kind of think it should be two different communities almost because the essence of bujo is anti preplan and supposed to be go with the flow. Idk those are my thoughts..🤷🏻‍♀️

The only time I refer to Ryder Carroll's BuJo system as being the OG system is when I see people posting about feeling overwhelmed about keeping up with the instagram BuJos and making their BuJos pretty and therefore not getting the most out of their journals. I redirect them to the original system to remind them that it was originally intended to help with productivity and that it doesn't have to be pretty to work for them. I see the prettiness/different ways that people use their on BuJos as an individual process. Of people using the original idea to make their lives more productive. However they do it, if it's working for them, that to me is the most important thing.

Di Bailey Exactly. If someone is stressed out and feeling defeated because s/he can’t draw/paint/design/decorate as well as some of the Art Project journals, that’s when I tend to speak up with a reminder that their journal is intended to be a tool +for them.+ If that means they aren’t creating masterpieces on every page or ANY page, that is okay. But if creating art in their journals helps them out, well then go for it and practice until it looks the way they want it to look.

I love this video. It made me think about how, several months ago, I attempted making a bullet journal for the third time within about 5 years. After about 4 months, I found the same thing I have found every time I have tried, I just don't have the hours in a day to set up my bullet journal as delicately and accurately as would make me happy with it. So I opted to buy a premade daily planner, and incorporate bullet journal elements into it. While I still love(d) watching bujo videos, I didn't really feel like part of the community since mine isn't from scratch. This video gives me hope that maybe I am a small part of a community that's brought me a lot of joy.

It's funny because all those creative bullet journal videos made me want to try it out myself, to have a notebook like that. And I almost immediatly realised that "classic" bullet journal is not for me, more: I find it useless for me. I hate planning every little detail, I don't stick to it, making specific plans in advance makes me nervous and in the end less productive. But here I am, three years later using a regular calendar to write down my days. Every single one. Almost full page, everyday, just writing what happened, my thoughts, stupid stuff I heard. It helps me relax, think about each day, appretiate it. And I tried doing that in the past but it never lasted long. If it wasn't for those "not legit" bullet journals showing me I can do whatever the heck I want, I wouldn't be doing this.

that moment when RU-vid randomly recommends exactly the video you needed to watch. Thank you for making this video! I have never had anyone flat out tell me that my journals aren't bullet journals but I have always felt as an outsider because my bullet journals have never been so much for planning as they have been for mental health.

I’ve seen so many people in the Facebook groups who are scared of starting a bullet journal because they think you have to make it an art project. Or they have misunderstood the concept completely and think doodles and supplies is the main point of bujoing. I love doodling and decorating my journals, and I’m all for anyone doing what they want with their bujo. But I’m also afraid that the organizational ideas in the original system will be forgotten and lost because art and stickers and hauls get more attention on Instagram and RU-vid. Thats why some form of gatekeeping is ok in my book. Like keeping some Facebook groups focused on the functional side of bullet journaling. Just, you know, a room to focus on the bones of the system. 🤓 But I also looove love watching stationery hauls on youtube and finding the perfect planner pictures on Instagram 😅 So I like both sides of bujoing, but I want some separation 🤗 Great video, I really love your videos and your style!
@PlantBasedBride
@PlantBasedBride 4 года назад
I can see your point, but in my opinion having a Facebook group specifically focused on the bones of the system isn’t the same as saying aesthetic bullet journals are not actually bujos and a waste of time, etc. I try to talk both about the productivity of the system and show the aesthetic side in equal measure, but I’m also just creating content I like (as everyone is on RU-vid) and it’s not necessarily my (or anyone’s) responsibility to educate people on the entirety of the system. I feel like people have forgotten how to google and research information to learn about things they’re curious about! Ryder’s website is the first thing that comes up if you google “bullet journal” and it gives you all the bare bones basics of the system in a tidy little package ❤️
@fagerdam
@fagerdam 4 года назад
Plant Based Bride Yes I agree, it’s not your responsibility to educate people on the entire system! No youtuber has to be everything. One thing I want to add is, hating on someone elses bujo is never ok in my book. I’ve heard many planner youtubers talk about getting hateful comments lately. Thats so sad. I try to inform people about the original system in a positive way, by giving the link to Ryders video if someone is bewildered on Facebook. Thank you for your video and answer on my comment!

Comparison is the thief of joy. Others try to steal our joy by throwing gatekeeping " marbles" on out floors. Is the old "you're not good enough if you don't do it my way." The unspoken thought is "my way is the ONLY right way." Garbage. I don't like boxes and certainly.done want to be put in one because of my.race, religion, gender identification, the way I make my "n's" or some other arbitrary and capricious thing I do or don't do. I want to learn from others, not denigrate them because they're not like me. I agree with you one hundred percent! I loved watching you do your bujo.

For the strangest of reasons, there are people who think that if you draw in a journal/diary/planner, you have either made the book unprofessional, or YOU are unprofessional for choosing to draw in a medium commonly used for writing. It's like they forget that journaling in general, is meant to be a part of your life. Not your next novela that's going toe-to-toe with Shakespeare in a literature contest. Everyone's expression of life is different. The most common thing I've seen is that they match drawing with lack of intelligence, cause you're 'incapable' of expressing the same thing with JUST writing.

I'm bisexual so. . . I'm often not straight enough or not queer enough. Next to that, I'm also asexual. And like you mentioned, there's a lot of people with opinions on asexuality. So, unfortunately, I've definitely experienced gatekeeping with those two. Another experience I had was one I found ridiculous. I'm a gamer, so I was talking to an old coworker about my PS4 when a male coworker asked me what kind of games I played. Not out of genuine interest, but to see if I was a real gamer. He made comments about how I probably owned my PS4 not because I was a gamer, but for some other reason. Then, when I clarified that I am in fact a gamer, he made me list the games I played and once I'd done that, he also had the nerve to say how happy my "boyfriend" must be to have a girlfriend who games. Now, I'd never told anyone I was in a relationship. I wasn't. He just made the assumption I was. So I retorted that "sure, one day my _girlfriend_ will hopefully be happy that I'm a gamer." That silenced him.

I first learned how to crochet. But in the fiber community I was trying to be apart of, they didn't care about crochet and considered it a lesser craft than knitting. I was like um what? Or even the type of yarn you used...omg you use acrylic...ew gross. We only use wool made from fairy dust and unicorn farts. I eventually found a fiber community that is welcoming to both. BTW, I did teach myself how to knit and became bi-stitchual and I love both. Sorry for the rant but I can't stand it, especially when it makes someone upset.😤

I’ve been bullet journaling for 2 years now, I use it for high school and life in general. People try to invalidate it because it’s Harry Potter themed. This is how I keep up with it, I love HP so it’s fun to make the spreads. I used to try to do weekly spreads and crazy trackers, I wanted my bullet journal to look pretty like the people on Pinterest. That just wasn’t me though, I got a new journal and only did HP stuff and I experimented with the different trackers and spreads. Now I have a system that works for me and makes me happy. I don’t understand why anyone would try to make people feel lesser than them especially when that thing makes them happy.

Gatekeepers are literally the only reason I haven’t started my own bullet journal RU-vid because Ive been bullet journaling for two years now and I’m still figuring everything out and honing my skills and trying to improve my lettering and doodling because hey! They’re not perfect! And that’s totally okay! Because I enjoy customizing my bullet journal and using it in ways that make me happy AND productive, but I see so many hateful comments left on even the most “perfect” or “pristine” bullet journal. Logically, I know this is just gatekeeping because a lot of people want to see the finished product and not the journey, but it still sucks. I loved this video! You made so many amazing points and it was so nice to get to watch you create your beautiful art all while you were speaking such truths! Ive seen so many of your videos and I’m just realizing that somehow I’m not subscribed?? Definitely fixing that right now. One where you acknowledge that you’re still honing your skills and viewers can follow along with that. In my opinion it makes it more relatable and it shows that someone like me who didn’t grow up thinking they had any artistic ability can improve over time. I agree about gatekeeping, however, I really don’t care what my book is called. I certainly don’t make my just like anyone else’s. What I care about is if it works for me. And so far it has. I actually use it like a journal and a planner. I do all my tasks and appointments but after each weekly spread, I leave empty pages so that I can write about my feelings, thoughts, and experiences. I just started last October and I seem to make each month a little different based on what I learned from the previous month. I’m the only one that even sees it so I’m the one it needs to please and help. I am grateful for all the you tubers that post ideas so I can get inspiration. I personally have been using the bullet journal for 4 years now and I have always done mine as minimalist as possible by choice. I am flabbergasted that people would put down other bujo users just because they put art in their journal. My biggest belief in using bujo is that the journal is exclusively for you and must work for you. Whether it's minimalist or filled with art, as long as it works for you, that's all that matters. Thank you so much ofr shedding light on this issue, that surprisingly enough isn't talked about that much (or maybe I'm just out of the loop). What really surprised me is that you used asexuality as an example, and not only that but in a calm and professional way. Asexuals, such as myself, often gets forgotten about, both out of accident and intentionally, so to hear you speak up on our behalf really made me feel so happy! Especially as I follow you for your bujo content. I have definitely experienced gatekeeping in many ways, not only in certain toxic parts of the LGBT community (thankfully asexuality has been warmly accepted around my area and in our pride parades) but especially within geek communities. So again, thank you so much for speaking up against it! I'm so glad to hear it, and to hear you don't let those kinds of comments get to you.

First, I love this spread. It's such a great way to summarize your spreads of 2019. Secondly, I agree wholeheartedly about "gate-keeping". Each person is on an adventure to discover themselves and what their passions are. Keeping new (or different) people out of a community only hurts the community. In the moment it may feel like you are keeping the community 'safe' or 'exclusive' but really all it does it hurt the community in the long-run since new ideas/concepts will never be introduced, making the community go stale in the long-run. /rantover

I can’t do it, but it’s nice to see people who can. Also, it can be a way for artistic people to be productive when it comes to practicing their art. I randomly came across bullet journaling at the beginning of December and fell in love with how custom I could make MY planner. Since I just started at the beginning of 2020, I haven't gotten too much into doodles or "fancy" spreads, but that's okay. I focus on the cover page for the month, I have my habit and water intake trackers, then one or two weekly spreads at a time since I'm figuring out what works for me. If I HAD to make everything cute and perfect, I wouldn't do this. If I HAD to make everything black, white, and minimalistic, I wouldn't do this. So many people think what they have is the one and only way to do something. Well, that's wrong. Everyone should be allowed to choose how they use a bullet journal. Do what YOU want and not what someone else tells you. You don't need certain pens, a specific journal, or the exact spreads someone else does. If something doesn't work, change it! Be YOU.

Personally, I'm not a social person - they say - because I've never been interested nor I never needed to be part of group to identify myself, I simply don't care what other people do: they want / need to comply with a group to ease their lack of security and self-esteem? Go for it, you're free to be whoever you want, do what you want, don't look at me and don't bother me because I DON'T. Gatekeepers are trolls, just it. I don't get bullied.

I feel like every bullet-journalist would benefit from this video, because if everyone understood this simple message the bullet-journal community could be about celebrating our differences and expressing ourselves. Personally, my bullet-journal has its imperfections, and some months I didn't bullet-journal, but that's what makes it mine.

So true! We are far more interesting when we are all our own unique selves and bring that individuality to the community ❤️

So agree. My journal style is still evolving so who’s to say what’s right?

Exactly. And bullet journaling as a whole has evolved over the years. Change and growth is natural!

Thanks for sharing your opinion on this!! I honestly hope that whoever had told you those things to invalidate how you do your bullet journal will rethink and reassess themselves. Always supporting you, and your wonderful bujo! Really grateful as well how you're so courageous in sharing your bujo with everyone in the community. Stay strong and stay inspired, sweetheart!

I have come across gate keeping in a lot of comunities personally, Harry Potter, Star Wars and Star Trek along with LGBTQ+ comunity. I have only seen the movies and in the case of Star Wars the tv shows too but the idea that I cannot be a fan becuase I haven't read all of the comics or seen the orginal Star Trek is wrong. I want to thank you for mentioning Asexuallity as an example . I'm demi sextual but I don't talk about it and have been reluctant to approch the comunity becuase of Gate Keeping. I love your videos, I wish I had you artistic tallent to add to my journal, you always make your journal so beautiful. I find it more inpriring to be productive when there is colour and beautiful things added to a page.

thank you for speaking out about this. gatekeeping is just tiring for both ends of the problem, and just because one method does not please other members of the community should not give anyone the right to dox others. Just enjoy the process, whatever that may be to you! dont like it? literally look away and do ur own thing, so easy! no need to be dogmatic bout it tbh :/ seeing different expressions of ones bullet journal is awesome and makes the community so unique. Continue to make awesome spreads, blessed be!

I'm new to the Bujo community and I've experienced gatekeeping (somewhat?) first hand. Where i'm from, there are classes/sharing groups for Bujo and I often attend them, bringing my own supplies. I often receive remarks how my stationery (washi tapes, pens etc.) doesn't fit into a certain theme or character(?). I have pretty curly hair and the people around me during those classes thought I'd have a wild or a crazy artistic themed Bujo when in truth, I just really like keeping things simple. I also find myself being overwhelmed by the artwork and creativity people are able to do for their journal. I'm not that creative and sometimes, I feel like my journal isn't even good enough. But then again, I always remind myself that Bujo is meant to be simple and to keep track of things. I'm glad I stumbled upon your video. I'm glad I'm not the only one that finds gatekeeping ridiculous. I just hope that all of us can be more accepting to different types of journals/people.

WOW - if that beautiful spread is what you make when you're talking about something you hate, the stuff you create when you talk about something you love must be AMAZING! Impressive.
