When they first advertised this musical for Broadway in 2019, I was beyond skeptical. I was so sure that it wouldn’t be able to do the cult source material justice and wouldn’t be worth watching, let alone successful. But my god, was I wrong. I went to see it in January 2020, and I honestly believe this is the most perfect Broadway musical adaptation of a film, EVER. Probably the most ambitious (and impressive) set/lighting design of any show I’ve seen, on point costumes, the writing which changes the story up enough that it does it’s own thing and stays relevant while also respecting the original film, the music which speaks for itself, and to top it all off the most incredible and energetic performances you could ask for. Perfect casting all around. Easily one of the best shows of the past decade.
For people who are wondering…… At the time Mrs. Argentina was played by Leslie Kritzer. She also played Delia Deetz. Now Michelle Aravena plays Mrs. Argentina and Leslie Kritzer still plays Delia. Charles Deetz (the father) is played by Adam Dhanisher. I don’t know if that’s how you spell his last name but I tried my best. Adam still plays Charles today. Lydia Deetz at the time was played by Sophia Anne Caruso. After she left Presley Ryan became the new Lydia. And after Presley left Elizabeth Teeter took over the role of Lydia. Elizabeth Teeter is the current Lydia right now. If you’re wondering where Presley Ryan is in this, she is the person who said “Never whip a thoroughbred.” And Something cool if you did not know this, all the football players in the back at 3:46 are all puppets. One person controls them from back stage and I find that really cool! Anyways for anyone who did know all this stuff this was just probably a waist of your time, and sorry about that! Okay I’m done now.
@@samham8596 I don’t know but his clothes look torn up so maybe while he was playing he got tackled to much and just ended up dying. I don’t know but that’s just what I think.
Imagine if they used this to help prevent suicide. Like someone goes into a building expecting a therapy session, only for all these people to show up and break out into this song.
Just realized the football players in the back are all lined up on a rod like foosball pieces. Absolutely genius. If I remember correctly, the football team died in a bus crash, so it's possible that those guys all got skewered on something.
I got to see this with the original cast before Rona, and she KILLED THIS SONG. Absolutely my #1 broadway moment to date, and going to be a hard one to dethrone.
I loved being able to see this live. this musical literally introduced me to musical theater and without it I definitely wouldn’t be who I am today. Anyway, absolutely love this musical
I was hot I went to parties a lot Y'know? I was driving Lamborghinis Sipping super-dry martinis In the tiniest bikinis on a yacht But I was depressed Also completely obsessed An unhappy beauty queen Who dreamed to be Miss Argentina I had such low self-esteem I was a mess So I gave it all up for the netherworld I've been here forever, girl If I was more clever, girl I would've stuck it out Knowing what life's about Pain and joy and suffering Failing but recovering I'll tell you another thing Everyone here is alone So if you are breathing Go home! If I knew then What I know now I would have looked within and let love in somehow If I only knew The truth back then I wouldn't have had my little accident Don't be blind You left your whole life behind See a shrink Call a priest Ask the recently deceased Death is final and you cannot press rewind Don't jump when the light is red Toasters should be used for bread Never smoke cigars in bed Nietzsche was right, y'know, to live is to suffer, bro Don't cheat on the one you wed Never whip a thoroughbred Angry pygmys shrunk his head Why did it take death to see Happiness was up to me? If I knew then What I know now I would've laughed and danced And lanced every sacred cow I thought I knew But I was wrong 'Cause life is short But death is super long I exploded! If I knew then (If I knew) What I know now I would've crossed every line And drank all the wine Before my final bow If I knew (If I knew) The things that now I know I would ride the highs and cherish the lows Going, it's a quick trick 'round the rodeo So before they lower the curtain, be certain to enjoy the show That's what I know! Life is short but death is long Here, one minute then it's gone Thought I knew but I was wrong If I only knew what I know now!
I've got a couple of them. been thinking of doing the same thing. I've managed to dig up a few full recordings on reddit and various places. be happy to share what I've got with you and vice versa if you track down anything I don't have
I have links to (I think) all the videos used, I have one that’s rly good quality and a good angle but very laggy One that’s still good quality but from a bad angle And the one with Presley as Lydia Lmk if you want links
I'm saying this without knowing you or having ever heard you speak Spanish, but if you care about not giving a potentially offensive performance as a non-Hispanic, you would probably need to develop an accurate-sounding Argentinian Spanish accent that doesn't just sound like a stereotype/caricature. Either that, or drop the accent altogether. The last clip w/ the original actress from the movie sounds like a good reference point. The accent is understated and not the main focus.
As an Argentinian we don't use the name Hispanic lol rather Latino and as far as you don't do a Caribbean accent like the one in the video I think you will be fine. Also Argentina , as far as race is concerned is very mixed and white plus the character is green cus dead. But the song in itself is a bad representation of our musical culture cus no song from my country sounds like that, they should have given it a tango undertone instead of Caribbean vibes
i know therye just silly background characters in a musical but im really curious as to what killed the football guys. like the whole team?? supposedly all at the same time?? also they dont seem to have anything on their bodies that indicates physical damage so like??
The black haired girl is Lydia Deetz after her father got engaged to another woman after her mother’s death she grew distant and didn’t want to move into their new house so she got help from ghosts to scare them away and when it didn’t work she got Beetlejuice to scare them but only someone dead can open a door to the netherworld so she tricked him and went to the netherworld to find her mom with her dad following Miss Argentina is like the receptionist for the netherworld and recently deceased and the people singing along are people in line/people already in the netherworld
@@braveimposter its a musical called beetlejuice, i think there should be a few bootlegs on the internet but you'd have to find them, i can send you a link to full musical but with pl subs if you couldnt find anything
@@braveimposter You might not be able to find the whole musical (at least not on youtube) but there are lots of clips and it was based on a movie which is on netflix
Its definitely 2 different people in this clip that they spiced together, one is Presley Ryan (she and dana take turns to be shrunkie-head) but i'm not sure who the other one is. I don't think its Elizabeth OR Presley Ryan, so probs another member of the ensemble.
At that time I don’t think Elizabeth Teeter was with this musical. I could be wrong though. Presley Ryan was the person that whipped a thourgobred. And I’m pretty sure Dana Steingold and Presley took turns playing the shrunken head guy. I’m not sure If all of this is correct. This is just what i think.
@@emalaw1329I recently saw the show with the Skier (or snow boarder, idk I was far from the stage) And I believe they said ‘Careful on the down hill sleds’ So that it rhymes a bit more with everyone else
one of them smoked in bed and probably caught fire, one of them tried to parachute before the right time to jump, the girl in the towel for some reason dropped a toaster in the bathtub, the guy who says "i exploded" probably blew himself up with fireworks And as for Miss Argentina, it is revealed in the movie of this musical that she participated in the Miss World contest and lost, she had this stash because she was Miss Argentina in 1939 and so, the argentine contestant After losing, she killed herself by cutting her own wrists, and also says that people who die by suicide are put to work as bureaucrats in the underworld
After she died, her hemoglobin level dropped causing her veins and body as time passed by to become greener. it is a sign of decay or some stuff . you can see that beetlejuice has his hair and some parts of the face green too :>>
2:39 "Toasters should be used for bread." WTF was she using the toaster for? Judging by what she is wearing I'm guessing she was using it for a hair styler or something. If that's the case, she won a Darwin Award.
As an Argentinian I hate that the accent, the culture and the Caribbean under tones of the song are so far away from our country. Like she only has the name but she is a generic Latina after that even more from central America
It's because the actress is Puerto Rican, different actresses have preformed the role differently (tho sadly not authentically Argentinian or even Argentinian - American) but maybe as the tour continues they will
