WHAT I LEARNED IN MY FIRST YEAR
Okay... today's a long one. There is so much that I want to talk about but I figured rather than making you sit through a 40 minute video (which we all know yall would fail miserably at haha), I would make a little series kind of like my personal profile series. This is the first of many videos that I will be sharing with you about my first year at UBC. Let me tell you... it was just a little CRAZY.
Please know that my experience is completely my own. Its a result of the choices I have made, the things I have done, and how I interact with everyone and everything around me. Just because it went a certain way for me does not mean that it will go that way for you too. I know this topic isn't particularly exciting, and honestly, this video is nowhere near as happy and cheery and bright as I would like it to be, but I want to be honest with you guys. Stay tuned for more about my first year experience! And please know it does get better!
As always, if you have any questions, feel free to email me: itsmemaddya@gmail.com
I love talking to you guys and I am REAL bored up here in quarantine.

I really appreciate your honesty in this video. It's always hard to sit back and reflect on negative times, so I'm glad you allowed yourself to be vulnerable and real instead of sugar-coating your experience.

Thank you :) It's definitely not easy, but it lets you actually take a minute acknowledge that things aren't always perfect! Thank you so much for watching :)

I just wanted to say thank you for being so honest in this video. I've been yet to come across a youtuber who makes videos about university and actually talks about how hard it is and the negative experiences you are bound to face rather than just glossing over everything and making their life seem perfect and as if they have everything together all the time. This video was such a nice reminder that life isn't always perfect and everyone goes through struggles :)

Maddy! I hope you’re doing well. :)) Could you make a video about how you picked your courses for first year and what your schedule looked like? That would be so so helpful xx

Thank you so much for all of the videos. They really helped me as I was applying to UBC (got accepted a bit ago!). Overall they have given me a better idea of what UBC is like. Especially this video, I am very happy to start university, but this reminded me that there will be lows and I may be unsure. But nothing is really set in stone and I think university is about finding out what it is you truly want to do, even if it is not the same thing you initially were going for. Hope your following years will be great, and maybe I'll meet you some day :).

Oh yes, my first year at UBC was '19-20, and I got very used to the hands-on practical learning and interaction with my professors, as I am a very social, outgoing type of person. Then COVID hit, and my world was turned upside down. We had to learn, like you mentioned, to teach ourselves in a way, take responsibility for our education in a way that was unique to us. I had to learn to use professors as a completely different resource than I was used to. All the adjustments! How am I supposed to do labs??? How are we supposed to do collaborative projects that require physical interaction??? It was 2nd year that threw me, and it was all because of COVID. I would start crying for no discernible reason, just because things weren't going how I planned it. And man did I plan it. I was very passionate about my course of study (long ago decided), until I lost that needed traction. I am still passionate, but I have to roll with it. We all do.

I'm planning on attending UBC in the fall and moving into residence and all your videos have been so helpful and so informative :) I'm definitely excited but at the same time pretty nervous about first year and so it's been awesome watching your videos to find out what life is actually like for first year students and what to expect :)

Hey Maddy! Well..to be honest here, I really loved how you shared your honest experience! I'm in 12th grade now and I too am planning to study in a University in Canada but I'm too really confused....cuz I do have some dreams in my life..I wanna follow my passion..but there's this thing, I first wanna get a Pre-Requisite in life...u know like getting a degree or something from a great university and like studying hard throughout college...and after that, going on to pursue my passion. But I'm like totally lost, that I'm I right? Am I doing the wrong thing? Should I go on with this strategy? And many more.....could you maybe help me a bit here? Give me your opinion on this maybe?
@MaddyA
@MaddyA 4 года назад
Hi Garvit! Everyone is different when it comes to their journey in their life. It is smart to get a degree and an education for sure... it's very important to gain experience in a field and to be able to understand to focus on something. I guess my best suggestion to you is find a degree or some kind of program that will compliment what your passion is. You don't need to go and get a bachelors of science or arts or business is that's not what you're passionate about... find a program that will allow to pursue your passion further than what you would be able to without some form of education. There are tonnes of options, going to university isn't the only one! An education of any kind is incredibly valuable. Hope that helps a little?

@@MaddyA Well I'm gonna be completely honest with you..do you think its next to impossible for an Indian to get in the hollywood film industry? I'm asking you this cuz I really don't have any idea how things go about over there..and maybe..if you know anything about it?
@MaddyA
@MaddyA 4 года назад
@@garvitmakan1080 I'm sorry, I really don't know too much about that industry. For as many successful individuals as there are, there are also many that work really hard for a really long time that never reach their end goal... that being said though, it can be like that in any industry. I would say do your research. But if film is your passion, you should definitely explore some film production/directing programs! Whether that be at home, here in Vancouver, or elsewhere, they will give you experience and a better understanding of how that industry works... you sound like a really good candidate for the B+MM at UBC... it would give you business experience that will help you navigate such an industry and also you will be able to directly study media and film (that is if you apply to and get accepted into the program!) Check it out - it's an amazing program!!

That's so cool! I have a few friends on varsity teams and when you are a part of a varsity team, there are "accommodations" for your classes. Usually you can take either 3 or 4 classes a semester. Obviously depending on what faculty will determine what courses you are taking, but when you get to UBC and become a part of the team, they will more specifically outline what the expectations are in terms of the classes and credits you need to be a part of the team.
