I think it's beautiful. The lyrics to the song are close to the last words spoken to Paul by John. I'm not surprised that Paul felt that it was so important to see this song finished for his friend while he still could. The end of the video where it fades to black and white then the Beatles are gone really does seem to signify that this is the absolute end for the group. Very emotional ending.

The fact that they get younger in the clips as the song goes on and they vanish at the end, and The Beatles in lights goes out, it's like they are saying "That's it folks, the circle is complete, thank you and good night X"

This song is almost the definition of bittersweet. It's sad to witness the final chapter come to an end for the Beatles. It's also a privilege and a joy to be able to experience the end of their story and to feel the excitement of having a new Beatles track. I love those guys. Well played boys.x

Its incredible to think the Beatles formed, wrote and recorded all their music, and broke up before any of them turned 30 years old. Its insane to think of the creativity that poured out of those guys in such a short period of time. This song captures that. Now and Then. The old with the new. Its a great swan song.

This song is so fitting. It’s almost feels like it’s a final goodbye to the fans. I’ve cried a lot as you can imagine. Feels like we were robbed of what could have been, had John not been murdered in 1980. All in all, The Beatles and Peter Jackson did an excellent job taking John’s demo and breathing extra life into it.

Agreed. We've been blessed with the closest thing we can expect to a fitting end to an epic story and for that I thank Paul for his stubborn insistence in seeing through to completion the hint of the potential he heard in this song since 1995. An incredible gift that hit me in all the right places emotionally. We have no idea if or how The Beatles story would have continued beyond 1980 if John and George were still with us today. What we do have, at least, is the best attempt and intent by Paul, Ringo, and the estates of George and John to give us closure. And the results are more than I could have ever expected. For that I'm thankful.

It's a time travel/"what if" universe - what if Beatles were alive and made a "modern" record. Kind of - at least this is the closest thing to that. This one made me really emotional. My dad was a big Beatles fan and we used to sit together every once in a while and listen to a few Beatles records together, sometimes i even took my bass and played along to them. It made the two of us really happy that we could bond over their music even though it was made way before my time, talk about what made the records great, what our favorite parts were and so on. Sadly my father died last year after a motorcycle accident. I would have loved to listen to this with him and share our impressions.

As you said, it's incredibly nuanced. The strings arrangement is subtle but really puts growing power behind the song. Compared to the '95 songs (which I like a lot as well), this feel more like a song and not a stitch up job. It was hard to feel John's real presence in those songs, but with this one he really jumps out of the speakers. It made me cry from sure. Exactly what I think. For me the strings are too much, plus some Paul piano that sounds strange. I feel like it should just have been remastered as a Lennon song. But it's an emotional legacy thing for Ringo and Paul. There's an analysis video that says some parts were taken out, the bridge for the guitar solo was added, and some Beatles background vocals were recycled, for example from "Because" on Abbey Road. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Xk88M4ABo_4.html

In fairness, this might well have ended up on a Lennon album in the 80s or 90s, had he not died. I’m not sure there are vaults worth of unfinished material from the rest of them. McCartney, for example, has had plenty of time to go through everything, and is fairly prolific. Harrison wasn’t really that prolific at all - as I understand it most everything he wrote was released in some form before he died.

@@scumboi78 Yeah, if we include snippets and fragments the amount of potential songs probably increases by a lot, particularly in Paul's case, since he has been living for a long time in the era of hand held recording devices.

I agree that despite all the decades that have passed it is still an original composition that no one else incidentally made during the passing years, like you said. However the song Endlessly by Muse, released in 2003 has similar chords and some phrases in this song sound almost alike, which is quiet surprising. So it makes me wonder if Matthew Bellamy (singer from Muse) did hear the original demo, or the 95 session, or if he simply just incidentally landed on the same musical ideas, or grabbed it from the same place out of the ether, while writing his song.

Thanks for your thoughtful analysis. The production was not a "cash grab". It is a touching farewell. Didn't expect to cry. Saw them (didn't hear them but it didn't matter) at Shea in 1965. They and their music changed the world--music, fashion, politics, the voice of youth calling for peace and self-expression. As they grew, they embraced new technology, as they did to finish this recording. Long live Paul and Ringo, the music will live forever.

I wish there was more restraint in the production choices but it doesnt really matter, its an incredible achievement and closure for Paul and Ringo. The "now and then I miss you" line gave me the feeling that John was actually thinking of Paul when he wrote it. It is really a fitting closure (if it really IS closure, that is; I wouldn't be surprised if they came up with a new "last Beatles song" in a couple of years).

Totally possible. I watched A LOT of clips and videos since Get Back and I saw a clip of John being interviewed on a beach and he said that he was totally ready to go back to the studio and record again with the others after they settled their dispute over Allen Klein. I think John even admitted that John was right, not an easy thing to do for some egos. May Pang also said that John really missed Paul. They were best friends since they were 14,15 years old. Both of them had lost their mothers too early, their thing for music etc. Those are our best friends with friendships lasting the whole life. John and Paul had a special bond.

On the topic of another last Beatles song, I’d be surprised if there weren’t other Lennon tunes on tape that were just wildly unsuitable for release in ‘95, too noisy and compromised, and subsequently not even considered. I’d be interested to see if any of those are now dusted off by someone, just out of curiosity, to see what they can do with them with the new tech. However as far as it being a new Beatles song, it would need to have contributions from all four of them so unless someone unearths a demo with Lennon and Harrison both playing on it, it ain’t gonna happen.

@@GregorBarclay I'm aware of how the story went, what they did for the Anthology project, and apparently that was all there was. And not lo ng ago I saw a compilation of unpublished songs some of which were actually new to me and pretty good...
@GregorBarclay
@GregorBarclay 10 месяцев назад
I get the impression that, to the remaining Beatles, the appeal of Now and Then, FAAB and Real Gone was that they were tracks that they hadn't previously heard - thus the enthusiasm to build something out of them. Whereas any unreleased stuff Jackson is hearing on the Let It Be tapes will be stuff all four Beatles heard and discarded 50 years ago. I don't know quite what Jackson is suggesting tbh, it's not like there's going to be songs hiding in there that can be unearthed in the way he unearthed the dialogue in Get Back - the only reason the dialogue was hidden was because it was unmiked - the music has been clear the whole time, and as I understand it all the songs from those sessions have been available as bootlegs for decades, so there aren't really any surprises in there.@@nachovillaro7750
