What Dirk does to this song is nothing short of phenomenal. We're all familiar with the almost happy go lucky feel of the original song but by changing the drums slightly it makes the song actually heart breaking. The impact the drums have on a song should never be underestimated

Just amazed at how he created that after listening to the song once. The song "map" he developed was effortless and just so impressive, showing he has intellectual mastery over his talent. "allo Drummer here, Dirk has a second high hat set up to the right that would be set to sizzle mode for double kick sections. His main hats would be set to be pretty tight as he wouldn't be keeping time with the left foot as much as a a jazz drummer would. Droppin the knowledge peace out.

@DerekStewart

Ha! Yeah, man. I saw this when Drumeo premiered the video and had the same thought about his Taylor-ish look; it's the grin for me. But yeah, to answer your hi-hat question, it's typical to have the hat pedal to the left of the secondary bass drum pedal, whether that's another kick or a double pedal, and it's not uncommon to either fully shift your left foot to the kick pedal or just pivot the heel and place the toe on the kick pedal while covering the hats. And then for even more versatility, drummers can add a secondary, "remote" hi-hat that runs a line (not unlike one you might find on a bike brake) to a third pedal. This would provide the simultaneous option of a closed and open hi-hat sound or even just a differently-pitched hi-hat. It's pretty awesome stuff!

Dirk Verbeuren is/was a legend way before Megadeth - imo they were lucky to get him. Love or hate the genre/s he got known for, when it comes to blast beats/death metal ... he is routinely counted among the best. He brings the "Ringo, Bonham, and Rich" mindset and inventiveness to those genres. He's solid as oak, and has this thing for making familiar sound songs sound fresh. His fill work is amazing.

@apolyon652
@apolyon652 9 месяцев назад
Hey Justin, when playing double kick you will typically add a drop clutch to the top hi-hat cymbal which allows you to set an "open" spacing which can be closed by hand - either closing it with your fingers or tapped by a drum stick. This allows you to play with a tight or washy hi-hat sound without using your hi-hat pedal, although you can still use the pedal to close the hi-hat if needed. You can see it in some of the close shots of his left hi-hat. He also uses a remote hi-hat on the right side, which can also be a different size to the main hats for tonal variation. Hope this helps!
@drunkenfarmerjohn42

Drummer and Drumeo member here. I don’t play double kick but know that for those who do, the left foot moves between hi hat pedal and left kick pedal. Also, Drumeo just released an another video in this series where a Julliard Jazz professor plays “In Bloom” by Nirvana.
@NikkLiberos
@NikkLiberos 10 месяцев назад
Yes!!! And most of us who play double kick either have a drop hi-hat clutch (which is pretty nifty. Lars, for example, uses it) OR two hi-hats, one regular and another one by the ride cymbal, either closed tight or half closed, kinda shimmery.
@tryste_mx
@tryste_mx 10 месяцев назад
When playing double kick I like to have my left kick pedal tucked in as close to the hi hat pedal as possible, so I can keep my left heel on the hi hat and play open/closed hi hat patterns while being able to throw in double kick triplets. When I'm fully wailing on the double kicks, I'll use a hi hat clutch as necessary, like @NikkLiberos mentioned above.

Not only was the songwriting and mix so much better, but it was Dirk's first album with them and I'd never heard drumming like that before. He said Dirk is the sweetest dude and he'd pretty much grown into the role of running most of the logistical machinery behind the band. Drummer here! You often get very special clamp for the hi-hat stand that bolts it to the kick drum. This eliminates the need for the extra legs that make the stand a tripod, normally. That way you don't have to span quite as far from the left kick to the hi-hat pedal. They're side-by-side once you've done that. I dunno what maniacs like Ginger Baker and Nick Mason did, back in the day. There may have been some hacksaw-and-gaff tape magic at work. As for what you do with the hi-hat while you're playing that extra kick drum: A lot of the time the drummer just moves his right hand to the ride cymbal or floor tom. A lot of guys keep their hi-hats fairly close together, even in fully the open position, so that if they are playing hi-hat while doing the dugga-dugga, it's just a bit of slosh. Sterling Campbell keeps his hats so close that you can barely slide the tip of an ink pen in between them, even though he plays single pedal pretty much all the time. Honestly, how far do you need the hi-hats to open, after all?

I have been a fan of Dirk since I started listening to Soilwork in 2013. Check out his playthrough of Leech. Shows why he is a top class drummer.

Yes, I can hear your chair. My pitbull also heard it. Thank you so very much for that 😂. Now she is looking for a sound to silence 😂😂😂:

Nothing is as tiresome as Mustaine bitching about Metallica - but he's right to be proud of his drummer.

Dirk is ridiculous. His work on Deconstruction by DTP is frankly otherworldly

How can someone in music have never heard Mr Brightside?! 😂😂 I assume he's never been to a wedding in the last 20 years either 😂😂

The work he did in Soilwork was phenomenal and pushed the envelope big time! His blastbeat triplet thingy is ridiculous!!!. He then joined Megadeth for the financial security which is a shame because I think his creativity doesn’t get to shine anywhere near as much. Amazing drummer though.

I was gutted when he left Soilwork for Megadeth. He’s a phenomenal drummer and, dare I say it, wasted in Megadeth.

Such a great drumeo video and, Mr Hawkins, welcome to the party!😂 watch the Sandman video too. As a total musical newbie, this blew me away how musicians just work so quickly and it highlights just how good these people are.

Yes! Some people have this idea that musicians (at least ones not in symphonies) are dumb. Of course theirs different areas of our personalities/choices might not be the sharpest all the time. But musicians are no dummies. The more I learn the more in awe I’m in learning about what’s involved playing guitar, drums, bass and it’s so interesting and I just love it!

Comment: The Killers are not huge in the US. They are gods in England and in the UK but bands such as Skillet and The Bravery during the early 2000's were way bigger than "The Killers". The songs from their first album were not even on the LA LLoyd Rock 30 Countdown (back in the day). May 31, 2024. USA.

I love that Drumeo channel. I don't play, but I still go there from time to time for the interesting content. They have a few other drumers who regularly do the same premise of learning a track on the fly. It's always fascinating to watch

If you went back two decades and told me The Darkness would be publicly discussing the drummer from Soilwork, there is no way I would have comprehended how that would be possible.

alot of double bass drummers have a closed hi hat and the foot operated one.

I don't have a double kick but I kinda know the theory. You can hold the high hat with the ball of your foot and operate the kick drum with your heel. You can also just release the high hat by unscrewing the clamp. Gives you closed hat sound. Similarly you can alternate heel and toe with the high hats to simulate 4/4 open shut high hat action while you are doing fills ...

Go check out his playthrough on 'Late For The Kill, Early For The Slaughter' from his time in Soilwork. You can catch a slight bit of insight into his diversity of playing there. He's incredible. He adds this amazing groove into that song.

A lot of the time, they just leave the high hat closed. Or they set up a second high hat which is always closed.

Re. Your theory of drummers genetics. Dirk has a typical Dolichocephalic head shape where the ratio of breadth to length is less than 0.75, which is a Northern European trait.
