Hey Jen, I have a confession to make. One night, I was browsing youtube for a good, interesting video to show to my students. I do this from time to time as it spices things up and so that my students can hear other people talk in English. I started with your video: "Odd things in Prague" which was my final choice. I created a few questions (to check the comprehension), printed them out and guess what? Students really liked you and from that time on, I do actually check your videos from time to time. I hope that you aren't mad and wish you a beautiful week. Thank you for being you and your hard work here. If you ever show up in Ústecký kraj, feel free to stop by, would love to meet you in person. XO
Hey, so I have just discovered your channel. I'm a Czech who grew up just outside of London and currently lives in Austria. And I have now watched your last 8 vids because they are INCREDIBLE!! It's fascinating to see your experience of our country. Please keep going, you are really good at this RU-vid thing and I know I can speak for the small community you have built up in saying that many of us Czechs really enjoy your videos 😊
A few years back, whrn I lived in Prague, I managed to cut my costs to under 3000 Kč per week including rent and all. We had a one bedroom apartment together with my ex, we cooked all our meals and did not really buy anything too expensive, but we did not have to buy the cheapest stuff either ot have to think whether we can afford this or that. Spending 8000 Kč/week is not *that* much, but if you try a bit, you can cut it in half and still live pretty decently. Most of my savings were in form of not eating in restaurants, cooking all the meals myself and finding a good apartment for little money. (Definitely the hardest part)
As a person over 65 years old, I have a pass in Prague for the metro and tramvaj - and it is good for life. In Ceske Budejovice I have to renew my tramvaj pass every year until I turn 70, when I will get a pass good for the rest of my life. A few simple joys of getting old in Czechia.
It depends on the type of boiler, but many types only require replacing the heating spiral (or whatever you call it in AmE) after an old one burns out and turns ineffective. I doubt you'd have to replace the whole boiler every fifteen years. A good boiler should be able to last up to thirty years, some even longer. Obviously, good maintenance every now and then and relatively "soft" water also help with that. Good luck with the boiler and thank you for the video. :-)
Love the idea of this video, so interesting for me even when I am czech. You´re meals looks so good, great inspiration for easy and healthy food. I didnt expect that you will like cimrman, i thought that its kinda only for czech humor. If you still have a problem in the flat or in future, try Hodinový manžel.
Couldn't agree more. Especially when you want to eat some typical Czech dishes. Plus it's quite cheap and the social aspect is really great. Also Pastva in Anděl is one of my favorites. They change the menu all the time so it can depends but I ate some delicious meals there.
I wouldn't advise renting for as long as possible. Quite the opposite, actually. The property prices in Prague are going ballistic. So getting your own house is probably the best thing you're ever gonna do. (Doesn't necessarily apply to apartments.)
To vám instaloval Brad Pitt kotel z kůže jednorožce? Já to měl za 35 sakumprdum (se vším). No jo Praha je holt drahá,zlatá vesnice.
Hi, Jen. I'm new here, discovered your channel just now. My name is Ivan and i live in Prague. My wife is always saying we spend a lot of money and we have to cut our expenses. Tried to summarise how much we spend once or twice but after one day i was too bored counting. 😆
@@DreamPrague Nah, doesn't have to be. If he really was changing the boiler and everything it can cost quite a lot. BUT, never pay before (people've already commented on that here) and ALWAYS ask for the bill so you can see what exactly was replaced for how much and what the plumber charged you. Plus if it breaks, or doesn't work properly again, within the warranty (usually 2 years), you can sort it out for free...
New combination kotel with boiler costed 60 000 CZK with work and its for house with 2 bathrooms...for classic flat endurable maximum in my opinion is cost about 45 000 - 50 000 CZK with everything and 2 years warranty.
@@rhhvu Exactly! I think Jen described something like a discrimination - if it was obvious that she is a foreigner, she had to pay that terrible amount... :-(
In czech Bojler and Kotel are two diferent thinks. Bojler usualy costs about 10.000 crowns and runs on electricity so you dont need to do anythink with chimney its basicaly barel with electric heater full of water. Kotel on the other hand usualy burn earth gas or coal and can warm water in heating or/and water for household. Now You have to use kondezační kotel which could be pretty expensive because you have to put new plastic or stanless stell tube to chimney and other thinks.
Yes, but in English Kotel is "boiler" I believe. At any rate, it's like taking my car to the mechanic, when I know nothing about cars...Him: "You need a new engine" Me: "Okay!"
@@DreamPrague Yeah, I often check vocabulary on Wikipedia to compare how certain words work in different languages. It is interesting that Czech bojler and English boiler are not the same thing: Bojler / (Storage) water heater cs.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bojler /// en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Storage_water_heater (Topný) kotel / boiler cs.wikipedia.org/wiki/Topn%C3%BD_kotel /// en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boiler
@@DreamPrague And now you have to be thankful for exploring another part of our national mentality. After something you did a huge wave of people rises and they going to tell you what you did wrong. But what a surprise when you have to solve the problem no one is there and tells you the best way. And dont be upset in heating, there is a huge variety of products in therms of quality and price.
@@pityu2002 Well people usually only talk about it when it's done. It's never: "So, a plumber is here right now, should I buy this?" It's always: "Last week.." So how can people help beforehand.
Yeah our standard boiler costed here in Moravia about 55-65 thousand crowns (with everything included). So maybe it’s the Prague price or bigger flat or something.
4 years ago we bought boiler for 30 000. All the work was 20 000. In Prague. 105 000 is a total bullshit, he robbed her because he knew she was a foreigner. Oh and I have definitely never heard of anyone who would want 105 000 in CASH and on that day, not after the work is done.
To nezná fakturu? A platit předem? Ojojoj ...
Yes, Dream Prague. Never ever pay in advance + in Cash + the whole large sum - this combination is "terrifying", not safe. 😲I would make him leave immediatelly. I guess it is something like a Red traffic light for a person thinking and living in the "Czech dimension". But you vere lucky, (at least partly if we concider the regular prices mentioned below). So, don't be unhappy, it's a school of life and the Czech reality. 😕 PS: I love Your videos. 😊
Protoze..To bude takový překladatelský oříšek:D.Jinak opět skvělý video.Diky.
Well, Prague has always been more expensive than the rest of CZ, but believe me there are places that are even worse. I come from Karlovy Vary - a nice place, however, the prices are as high as in Prague, but the people make 3 times less - try to live on that.... I've been living in Germany since 2014, and it is not much better here (at least in my place - Garmisch-Partenkirchen). If you go out for a beer, you'll pay between EUR 3.00 and 10.00 per beer (even if it's a bottle). But yeah, Prague is expensive. I went there for 2 days with my (ex-)girlfriend in November, and it cost me over CZK 20.000 😉😂 (incl. hotel, restaurants - btw, we were in Radost, too 😋, transportation etc.). P.S. I love Cimrman's theatre, too - thanks for that teaser, I think it was "Záskok", right? Anyway, Cimrman is a fictitious character/imaginery person. Despite this fact he was chosen by the Czechs as one of the greatest Czech personalities of all times. Here you can see how crazy the Czechs really are... 😂😂😂😂😂
About boiler: 105.000 is sort of Prague tourist price.. If you would call right "instalater", even at Prg, you would pay 40K max. Your videos are great!!
Cimrman (pronounced similar to Zimmerman) is translated well but not perfectly. In Czech the group really plays with the flow of the Czech language, the tone of the language and with the obscurity of some parts of grammar. You kind of lose that in translation but they are really good at compensating it in English and are trying to recreate the joke within bounds of English grammar reasonably well. It can also be a bit off putting to people unaware to how Cimrman plays work (even to Czechs) - they are essentially a recreation of a fabled Czech inventor/playwright/genius/jack of all trades plays and theatrical efforts. As such first part of the play is done as a university lesson/seminar and in the actual play they often utilize brick jokes established in the seminar itself. It really plays with the language and makes you realise that there are connections between various words in Czech. I would do it a disservice if I called it puns but it is essentially a humour based around very well thought out puns and puns are just hard to translate. Luckily Czech writers have vast experience in translating foreign movies and keeping spirit of the joke in translations and as such they can reverse it. But in most cases the humour is based around brick jokes (still utilising the various puns etc. e.g. during seminary they'll say "his neighbour was a well known brick layer" and later one character portraying the neighbour would go to bed and throw out a brick from it - it is not in any play, just an example). Also - and this is where foreigners will most miss out, Cimrman plays rely heavily on cultural knowledge and historical knowledge of Czech lands (especially during the end on 19th/begining of 20th century). That to me is the bigger barrier than the knowledge of language because you can't do away with a translation in that regard. I mean try explaining someone who's never heard much of the US liberation war a joke about Boston Tea Party. The cultural and historical context is crucial for that joke to work.
Supe video jako vždy, pokaždé se zasměju. A máš krásného pejska🐕.(Jestli chceš doporučit něco pro psa tak Brit, Carnilove, Marp, Orijen nebo Vetamix - to dražší není dost často lepší než levnější)
Oh my goodness. I would not know how much a new boiler with instalation would cost but 105 K sounds way too much. I would like to recommend "checking out" household insurace with assistance services (pojištění domácnosti s asistenční službou). In the Czech Republic there are different forms of insurance for the place you live - 1st Pojistění nemovitosti (home owners insurance - insures your house or the main building - eg.walls, windows etc), 2nd Pojištění Domácnosti (household insurance - insures things like furniture, TV, PC, etc.). Along with this you can for an additional charge get "assistance" (tzv. asistenční služby). This is great - especially in Prague! - the insurance companies have cooperation aggreements with companies that provide different types of help, when problems arise (needing plumbers, electicians, etc). Even if your problem is not an emergency, it is possible to ask your insurance company to recommend a maintainance firm (in Prague eg. Byto-Servis, but there are many). When the faucet started to leak in my kitchen I first called my household insurance assistance service to ask, who they recommend. When there is a real emergency (eg. water starts dripping from the heater furnace in the middle of winter) the insurance company will then facilitate the emergency repair within hours and the customer usually pays a copay. When my mom, who lives in a smaller city (Benešov), decided to shop around for household insurance with assitance services, we actually contacted the assitance services of most insurance companies to find out which insurance company has more local helpers (eg. plumbers, electicians, etc.) for her city.
Great idea with the big bowl of salad for the week. I also make a big batch of whatever meal and then eat leftovers all week. Never thought of doing that with a salad though.
Thanks for another great video ! You are brave enough to see a Cimrman play... :-D If you need an EN-speaking plumber in PRG (expat from the UK), just let me know… Have a nice time ! T.
The price for the boiler replacement could actually be fair. I am renting a flat and on Saturday the boiler broke down. It's a gas boiler (kotel) connected to the central heating system and it also provides hot water for showering. Sadly, it's old and something rusted through. My landlord had the machine assessed. Just a replacement of the old part should be around 15K. Spare parts are difficult to get and you cannot buy same boiler due to changes in legislature. He was thinking about going a full electric model or some other possible combination of technologies but that would take too long to replace and cost much much more. Tomorrow I will see if I can get a hot shower again or not:)
Hey Jen, just letting you know how to get a good food for you dog. :) (By the way, Royal Canin is good dog food) There is a website that helps you with picking the best dog food. It is called Dog Food Advisor in english or PsiKrmivoRadce in czech (I use both because they both have slightly different brands in their database). Or you can just choose by nutrients, dog food should have 30 - 50% of carbohydrates (sacharidy) 6 - 15 (but I would recommend to stick to max 10)% of fats (tuky) and at least 10% of protein (bílkoviny). It is good to know what those nutrients are coming from. I really recommend checking out those websites or also you can try to read a book "Jak správně krmit psa" by Dr. Martin Bucksch (don't know if it has also english translation).
Matuska is a good beer but I don't know how far you would be from Dno Pytle, a small craft beer bar. They mostly have Raven but better pricing. The guy speaks mostly Czech and very little English, I hope he is still in business.
If you buy a years worth of service on lítačka, you are paying roughly 4 czech krowns each day, for a right to use ANYTHING including the linecrawler to the Petřín, or ferry accross the river on Nábřeží, or next to Pražská tržnice. Metro, tramvaj and autobus not mentioning.
We did a quick calculation and ended up with roughly 2 000 per person in České Budějovice. But that's living in a tiny flat and not going near any public spaces, such as restaurants and theatres.
I gotta say, you making me see Prague differently... 😅I am czech but living in Norway cos I like more nature... I never liked Prague, always thought it was too many people and it was dirty there, but you always make Prague and czech sound so interesting, cool and making me wanna visit even tho I have been there so many times and I am not really a city person 😅
Hello, I and my girlfriend just started to watch your channel ;-) we love it. I was born in the Czech Republic but I moved to Australie in 2009. I am thinking to go back. The prices are crazy compare to 2009. My girlfriend is from Thailand she is trying to learn Czech your videos help heeps ;-)
I'am similar. Born Czech. Grew up in melbourne. Last 13 years living in London. Currently in olomouc waiting for flights to resume to Oz. Prepare for a shock. Prices in Australia have skyrocketed. Cost of living is very high.
Me and my husband live in Prague for almost 20y now, and we spent way more than this every month, mostly 50 000 - 60 000 CZK. Including rent (20 000), food (15 000), public transport + car (10 000), clothes (appx. 5 000), cosmetics (appx. 3 000), hobbies.. especially now, when I am on maternity leave and we have additional cost with the baby. Thank God I can still work while on maternity leave, so there is still plenty to spent and we do not need to cut into our savings.
Well you're the first person to tell me that what I'm spending is not too much, so thank you. It's getting more expensive every year. I can see the difference in only 8 years!
OH, Jen, Jen, Jen. You've probably made a mistake with the KOTEL. Czechs would never pay this right away. We would probably fond suitable KOTEL in a shop (for mích lower Price) And then find someone to install it. Cheaply. So, for the Future (God forbid).
Putting raw mushrooms in your salad threw me a bit 5:07. I always use them baked for everything. Seeing this got me googling, though and "While mushrooms can be eaten raw and may have a beneficial effect on the digestive system, certain cooking methods have been shown to increase their nutrient value, especially if grilled or cooked in a microwave.". So despite it's probably ok to eat them raw. I'll just keep cooking mine, I guess. LOL!
Hello again! Thanks again for the information. I would like to learn more English and the italki looks good way to start out. Videowise who is your inspiration? You are an american girl, talking american English, but you have a mind of czechs. Amazing. Still love your videos. I was curious about cooking.. How is that in USA? Are you taught to cook since the young age with your mother, or do you have to learn it by yourself if you want? And you seem to be a pretty good cook on a American lady :-). Thank you very much and please keep up the good work. PS: Love your details on czech language how you can implement it into the viceo. Amazing. Amazed.
Jen,common now.105 000 for water heater?Too late now.As a Czechoamerican I can be strait forward-after 8 years in Prague you should know better!50 -60 G is fair price.
Great to see so much of vegan food 💖. I hope that plumber place offers some kind of warranty for actually fixing the problem. Imagine forking up over 100k and your neighbors will still get the leaks. Chances are you won't get any help from this plumber if it is ingenuine business other than that he will make you pay even more or won't care cause you already paid him in full. And it is a bit dodgy that a transaction of this sum would be required in cash on spot in full. Usually you pay deposit and after job is done you get final invoice. I hope you have a proper receipt from this and not just a hand written note . It does sound like a lot of money though and reading the comments below you could have been a victim of a scam. Hopefully all will turn out well for you. Fingers crossed! Do you have a name of the company? Is your husband Czech or American? Worst case you can make video about that plumber and hinder his business a bit on social media if it comes out it was a scam! Plumbers in general have a reputation of charging extremely high costs and rely on people who are desperate and don't understand the problem. There was a recent case in AU where plumber was charging hundreds of thousands dollars for a few grand job and people paid cause they didn't know any better...it is always wise to get a quote from more places and shop around.
Yeah, you're probably right - it was the worst case scenario: An american foreigner, with limited Czech, who knows nothing about plumbing. Oh well, that's the tax I pay for not understanding more about plumbing! Glad you like the vegan food!
Ouch! 105K is way too much even for Prague. Please compare the prices first and never ever pay beforehand. Especially when someone asks for cash... that sounds shady.
8:38 I mean yeah, I was genuinely thinking that :D Thx in advance for answering tho! Oh and I also found a mistake in your grammar. If you look into your description. You wrote Jaké jsou Češi, but pretty sure you meant "Jací" jsou Češi.
Hi Jen, if you need a plumber next time, call jikoterm.cz/speaking-en.aspx it's long term family business and for a long time they had a plumber shop and a headquarters just around the corner in Italská street. They moved later, but they are still in Prague 2. I can only recommend them.
Hi Jen, I just discovered you lovely channel!! I am a TEFL teacher and I want to move to Prague, I really liked your tips about renting a Flat. Can you recommend a realestate agent?
You should know that if you are živnostnice and paying that insurancy and such things, you will get not good pension because if you are common eployee, your employer is paying much more for you to state. So people who are working without employer should think about later years and save some money and put some money to another pension products. PS: I really don't understand what boiler you have for 100 000 Kč, I think you are not speaking onlya bout boiler, but about more things related to heating, it couldn't be only boiler for such price. Normal price of standard 160l boiler with work included is max 15 000 CZK. EDIT: I understand now, you are speaking about kotel, not about what is known as bojler in Czech language. Kotel is for heating your home, bojler is oly for heating shower water. Ofcourse it can be combined so shower bojler and kotel can be one thing.
Yes, it was the kotel. Junkers. I overpaid, but what can I do now? We have an expression in English: "Just throw some money at the problem" - in other words, this has been a year long problem and it was worth a lot to get rid of!
@@DreamPrague If it was really kotel then about 100 000 is common price.I don't know exactly your model and situation, but It doesn't have to be overpaid. And better paid for qualified assembly with warranty than risking some cheap company.
Maybe average monthly salary 15 years ago. Average salary in Czech republic is around 34000 currently. But yeah, rents are pretty high nowadays. Especially in Prague.
@@irenabartova4549 You didn't specify so I assumed you meant gross salary, before taxes and insurance are taken out. But even when we lower the average monthly salary by taxes and insurance we get more than 25k which is still a lot more that the rent mentioned in the video.
I bet! I feel the same when I hear about rent in New York or San Francisco...I could never dream of moving there...and I'm from LA! So I guess it's all relative.

Love your videos and there’s a few topics I’d love for you to do videos on... Czech LGBTQ acceptance and equality vs USA, Government in US vs Czech Living wages in US vs Czech starting with minimum wage The vegan scene, vegan food price comparisons Are Czech performing artists in professional theatre paid a living wage and how often do you see English speaking roles in Czech theatre and film?
Thanks for the great videos, always a lot of fun. As for the boiler, I had my gas boiler checked just this week (by the way, do you know that you are supposed to get it checked yearly by law?). I live in Prague 5 in a brick building. I asked the guy about the replacement of my current boiler with a new one for future and he said that by law I would need to install a new type of boiler - condensation one - and a very rough estimation together with adjusting chimney is around 80K CZK. So, 105K don't sounds that much far from this ;) At the same time, you are mentioning a problem with leaking, and I'm not sure if this is the same type of the boiler.
Hi Jen, could you tell about your annual expenses, for example, how much you pay for doing your taxes, is there a difference between how much czechs pay to tax accountant and how much a foreigner would pay?
Ahoj.
Hi Jen, I am very grateful for your videos that relate everyday life there. Query, is there in Prague within 8km of the center possibility of acquiring a Tiny House? Cheers
Hi Adrian, thank you for your comment. I don't know about the possibility of affordable real estate near Prague (nor what you consider affordable). Here's the website where we found our flat: www.sreality.cz/en Good luck!
First discuss all the money over 5000CZK with the owner. They have to pay it if it is not a standard daily problem (legal requirement). I can recommend Bernard pub in Jeseniova street. Good beer and normal pub in Czech style. Just make them like you, it changes a lot (in service). They are partners, not servants when you order.
interesting! 1000$ for appartment.. wow. like really Wow! 1000$ a month will get you pretty good 3 room flat in sweden.. but I suspect that our salorys are a bit more here than normal in CZ..
So after watching some videos, I deduct Czech people will eat raw pork no questions asked, but a raw mushroom on a salad is unheard of. 😁 Interesting cultural difference. I don't think I could eat raw pork. But I always snack on raw mushrooms before I cook them. Delicious
Hi , yea , every place is different.. I just spent $2000 on my dog’s treatment ( one visit) .. my dentist was another $5 k ( one tooth ) in San Fran . ... oh well ..
Hi Jen! Im watching your videos for some time and this one was the best. I hope that you enjoyed Cimrman's theatre. It was nice surprise that you're vegetarian (aren't you?) but the thing which was made me to write a comment is the beer - Nubeer Bar is a nice place (and trust me, i'm the random person on the internet!) but in really close area is a lot of great craftbeer pubs! Try Dno Pytle, Once upon a Beer, BadFlash Bar and also in the noon Lya Beer Café! Matuška is adored in CzechRep but nowadays there is such a plenty of great micro breweries which you need to taste. Waiting for your next video! Cheers!
Great suggestions on the beer! I really enjoy Lya Beer Cafe, but those others are new to me. I don't eat meat, and try to really limit animal products - don't really call myself "vegetarian or vegan"...just trying every day to eat consciously for the 🌍
