I love this video. I started quilting on a little brother sewing machine. I got addicted to it pretty quickly. I watched utube and quilting videos. I moved up a year later from quilt as you go to a big brother machine (PQ1500SL) , added an extension table, expanded my addiction to threads and 10 years later I still love it. I am still learning and I am proud of my quilts. It's my happy place. Keep up the videos please . I still learning from you. Thank you for teaching me new skills for my passion!!
Yup, almost like my story. It took me several sewing machines to get there where I am now. With every machine my skills grew and I was getting better. I was dreaming about having four quilts on our bed for four seasons.... My husbands laugh when I tell him that. It is my cretivity outlet and it is addictive! ❤❤❤
Hi! I do promote a bit slower quilting and I never accelerate my videos. They send the wrong message. Quilting is slow and it takes time. And we are not professionals. we need time to learn. I find it relaxing and meditative and I am still effective with my projects! ❤❤❤
I actually do not like talking during quilting. The process absorbs me a lot and disturbs my thought process. This video was my third try actually. And yes, slow down. Use music if you have to. Your body and your mind will be greatful. And the quilting will get better. ❤❤❤
Thank you most kindly. I think the whole world could use some slowing down. For sure it helps me. Quilting time helps me to reset and slow down also mentally. Between my different roles of Mum, wife, working person, there is little time left to take a breath and think, instead of relax. and the quilting is better too ;) ❤❤❤
Thank you! I would love to hear such message when I started my quilting adventure. It took me some time to learn that speed and perfection is the wrong way to go. quilting is more about love and growth. ❤❤❤
So glad I found your channel! The speed at which you quilt, the hints on the pattern to use to gain experience is wonderful. Thank you so much. Can't wait to see your other videos. Have been piecing quilt tops for about 5 years, but never quilted them. Can't wait to start.
Hi there! We cannot have lonely, sad, quilt tops laying around! I mean we can and we all do, but some quilting is in order😆. I also have six tops (that I remeber) that are waiting... one day. Quilting is a wonderful activity, hobby, passion. It took me some time to get good at it but it was possoble. My first quilt was pretty bad, but my boys loved it and we cuddled under it for many years. Take it easy, practice and then go for it. Compare only to your work from last week or, so you can see your progress. there are some tricks and easy patterns that help to understand what we are doing. Keep me posted!
Excellent video! You are not only an amazing quilting artist but you are also an outstanding teacher. I wish your videos existed a few years ago when I was trying to learn all this but I’m. thankful that you are sharing all this with us now. This is so helpful. Great subject and video today again. Have a great day. Thank you for your time and expertise ❤❤❤
Hi there! And again I blush. Thank you for your very kind words. I am happy if I can encourage and motivate. It helps me if I can give this little push and inspire and motivate. There is this great book called" How do we quilt?" The answers vary but the core is the same: it is an artistic expression of practical love. ... And I also wish more of such videos existed before. Angela Walters was one of the first that went for the happy acceptance of the final result instead of complaining about invisible imperfections. But I have seen incredible quilters freeze when someone mentioned a tiny mistake...It is us, it is handwork, we try things and improvise...and it is beautiful. Have a great week!❤❤❤
Gosia, excellent video for beginners. I did quilt today on my Juki HZL G220 machine and it did fine. I will work on the quilt a bit each day, but not push myself or I will again become frustrated if my quilting is not up to snuff in my own eyes. I should be done within a week or so barring complications. I am definitely what I call a "recovering perfectionist", LOL. A finished quilt is more important than a perfect quilt. Comparison is the thief of joy so we all need to let go our perfectionism. I mean, everyone's handwriting is different so will their free motion quilting be, right? ~Cynthia
Dear Cynthia, you are so much like some of my Greman quilting ladies.... they hear what I am saying, they agree and then they keep to their own ways. I actully need to bully them into changing their habits. They always laugh when I say: take a deep breath, slow down, look at the texture, make a note taht this pattern looks so much better than your last one... You are very good quilter. You have your style and your voice, why your quilting should not be up to snuff, especially if you had such a long break. Do you still have your first quilt? if yes, then take a look at it and compare to where you are now . Hugs, ❤❤❤
I don't think I have the first quilt I did by machine a dozen years ago, but I do have the first ones I did in the 1980's by hand, even the piecing. Now, I do consider myself a master hand quilter. Machines are not as easy for me; I always said I have machine phobia. I vividly remember those first machine quilted pieces, though. Yes, the quilting is vastly improved and more complex than my first fumbling attempts. Thank you for the compliment, I do a fair job of it, I guess, but would like to improve in many areas. My consistency is not great because how well a quilt turns out seems to depend on my mood at the time, LOL. Being a perfectionist is somewhat of a dead end road and I try to give myself some grace.
Thank you for your comment!. I am really trying to get as many people as possible into quilting.... It is a great hobby and it brings so much beauty❤❤❤
"If you aren't making mistakes you aren't learning". 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 You are such an inspiration Gosia and I absolutely LOVE your videos. And may I say, it's so nice to hear your voice!!.😂❤
This is what I tell my students the quilting and the other kind. Thank you for your feedback. I really do not like my voice! It is different when I give a longer lecture or a presentation, but recording while quilting....I posted a third version of this video! ❤❤❤
We never get to hear it! It is always about doing things fast and perfect. It helps to slow down and relax a bit. This is why my videos are a bit on the long side and why I never change the speed. Quilting is a slow art:) I am so happy about your feedback! Thank you!!!!❤❤❤
THANKYOU SOOO MUCH for the wise advice and encouragement!! In my eyes you have conquered free motion quilting and are an excellent & patient teacher. I am grateful for your gifts! ❤
You are very welcome. I am greatful for the feedback and comments I get from you so frequently. But calling my patient... hm, you have never been to my classes. My ladies can be very set in their way and they need somy bullying. Try to convince a German lady (between 60 and 70 years old) that her way could use some change 😂. Or why she cannot expect to be perfect after few hours of quilting... Kidding. I love quilting and it helped me to be a better person❤❤❤
Thank you! Your feedback means a lot!. I leraned from YT too. There were some really good videos that helped me: go slow, take your time, finish, and that quilting is really about love and community!❤❤❤
We cannot have that! An unquilted project....I understand your hessitation. I was there some time ago. First the fear of ruining the prefectly sewn top, then thinking how many mistakes I made by selecting the wrong quilting pattern... And then I decided to make a simple quilt from 5 inch squares and just quilt it with different patterns. It was not good quilting but we love this quilt anyway. My kids cuddled under it for six years if not longer. I can only say: make few test sandwiches, get the feel of your machine and you and then go for it. It will be not perfect, but you will learn so much! there is no failure, only lessons ❤❤❤
Yes, it is doabe. You will be just limited with the quilt size. I love my small machine. It is so incredibly reliable and quilts beautifly. I use it when I need a machine during my quilting classes, or my big one is being cleaned. Have fun! ❤❤❤❤
It is the most basic one. When I learned I heard that I should start with steaples. They are actually difficult. Back and forth lines allow you to learn the basic control. If you know how your machine behaves and how to keep the spacing equal, everything else is much easier. ❤❤❤
It was lovely to hear you speaking today. I felt somehow I’d met you if that makes sense. Thank you for doing this video, I think I’m going to point my beginners group I teach to it as I’ve been saying the same things to them but they smile and say ‘yes, but…..’. I’m curious, what is the usual machine you quilt on? Please please keep up the videos, I’m just so pleased to have found you!
Hi there! Thank you for this great feedback and the recommendations. I know exactly what you are talking about. This, "yes, but..." deflecting my compliments, underplaying their achivements. I waork with a small group of quilters. They are all a bit older than me and they are perfectionists....They will point out every little imperfection in their quilting...Once I get them to stop thinking in the cathegories of perfection from the get go they start making a real progress. This journey never ends, and we are getting better all the time. Also I think quilters have a special connection. This is why I get so many wonderful comments. With some of my quilting friends we get into regular dialog, about quilting and familiy. So welcome my friend!❤❤❤
Me encanta. Especialmente los edredones para bebés y para mis hijos. Y las parejas jóvenes que se casan....it es especial. ❤❤❤ Traducción realizada con la versión gratuita del traductor DeepL.com
Thank you for the inspiration to be patient when we quilt. I find at the end of making a quilt top I just want to finish and that is when I have pucker areas in the back
I had them too!!! Sometimes they happen, Iassume that you also quilt on a domestic. This is way I am almost obsessive with smoothing the fabrics and the layers. It helps a lot. And besides that, the puckers will kind of blend in after few washings. ❤❤❤
@@quiltingnerd yes, I see on a domestic home Brother embroidery and sewing machine. That’s good to know that it will blend in after a washing. I have put quilts aside and not finish because of the puckering and I didn’t like it. I’ve thought about doing a quilt as you go so I can do one large block at a time and still make larger quilts.
I have already one or two videos on quilting large quilts and I will try to make some more. What helps me is to start from the middle! then it will only get less on my right side. then I am using not so many pins to hold the sandwich together. the layers will always shift a bit. Then I smooth each area I quilt before quilting it. it slows me down a bit but in this way I can feel if there is a wrinkle on the back side. Sometimes the fabric folds and then I can do nothing about it. I check the back from time to time. And this is one of the resonswhy I do not use spray basting. @@marcellarodriguez7955
@@quiltingnerd thank you for talking. I usually have the RU-vid videos on while I sew and I can’t be just watching them. I look forward to more videos.
And now we run into a small problem. I have a real problem when I talk and quilt ..... I can focus on one or the other 😂🤣But I will try to mix them up. Also use my tiny machine on a regular basis@@marcellarodriguez7955
Do you use a long arm machine to quilt large bed quilts? Thanks for sharing the beginners technique. It was a pleasure to meet you and I do enjoy all of your videos.
I do not have a long arm. No space. Also I am not a professional quilter so I could not justify the expence. I am using a Janome M7. It is a a very large domestic machine with a large throat space. I can quilt a king size quilt on it. It takes some time, but I am using a small steps approach. Every day a little bit ❤❤❤
