Whats up guys! My name is Kenji and I am currently a medical student at King's College London after graduating from the University of Birmingham with a Bachelor's degree in Medical Science (BMedSci). In this video, I talk about the things that I wish I knew before starting biomedical science in the UK.
If you enjoyed the video, please give it a like and a comment so I know to make some more! Also please show support by sharing it with a friend who's also interested in Medicine :)
Thank you so much!

As a diehard Biomed (up to PhD level), I HIGHLY appreciate this video, Kenji! Real and honest advice! 0:49 My undergrad in Ghent Uni Belgium was (is) highly theoretical, while there was much much hands-on coursework (essays, more practicals, labs) in my M.Sc. Honestly, the sooner the better, as you're being trained to become a researcher AND WRITING SKILLS are of major importance for this (grant application, literature review, research paper, communicating your research...) 6:09 Absolutely great to hear you say this! Couldn't agree more, and even though both working in the medical field, the scopes of biomed and medicine are indeed different (but often overlapping on some parts) Keep inspiring!

Hey Kenji, you might not see this comment as 4 days has past by since you've made this video, but I just wanted to let you know that you are such an inspiration to me. You aren't like other RU-vidrs who sugar coat or manipulate their videos in any way. You give out raw stuff, and such a great example to young men and women. My IGCSEs are coming up in 2 years. To make to med school, I'm following your example of having a good work ethic, and you are all the motivation and example I really need. There's literally nothing more inspiring than knowing that someone like you exists, and that I can keep going through adversity towards my goals. Thanks so much. Even though you aren't as popular now, if you keep persevering and if you're serious about RU-vid, I'm sure you'll explode into social media stardom on the medical sector. Your potential is literally crazy, and you're amazing lad, I hope you know that! Ciao

@@stephanieabdellah565 Tbh it depends on you, I remember going to a lot of open days. I liked: SGUL, KCL and QMUL a lot, the campuses were also good. I also wanted to study in London so I only ever considered London unis. I would say that before you decide, attend the open days and offer holder days. One uni might be amazing on paper but might not be right for you. Another thing you should consider is what you plan to afterwards, if you want to go into research, maybe consider a uni that has an IMBS accredited degree. If you want to go into medicine, maybe consider a uni that has a transfer scheme. Hope that helps!

Hey so I am leaving it very late to apply to university. I have had a lot of technical issues as of recently and have had to restart my whole application. I have an AWFUL habit of leaving assignments to the last minute. I will give myself the day of or the day before before I start work on the assignment. I have always done well doing it this way which isnt good. I'm doing a level 3 extended diploma in animal management but we do a lot of science stuff. Just worried about being able to complete the course. I'm going to go for a foundation year. I think it would be awesome to do a PhD in science but have no idea if I'm good enough. Hi Kenji, I'm planning to do Biomedicine at university after y13 (hopefully in 2021 September). I am a bit anxious after all the points you made (not your fault - just the harsh reality I guess). I was wondering if Biomed courses are all mainly coursework based or if that is a preference of Birmigham and the way they do it. I personally do not want to pursue medicine after the degree and have heard many people say the job prospects are very slim if I only have a biomedicine degree. Of course it is going to be hard, but I just want to make sure I don't hit a dead end. Also, was the balance between social and work life good for you? You mentioned how the course is very challenging but I also want to make sure I have time to travel/make some unforgettable memories, if that makes sense. I am definitely prepared to put all the work in but just want to gather as much information about the course before applying obviously. There are so many universities to choose from, it's a bit overwhelming. But thank you for all the videos, you've been really helpful!

So I really want to do it, but I literally don't know what I'm going to do after the degree loooool. What do you suggest ahah? Plus how am i supposed to narrow down the Universities? There are sooo many, and I simply don't know where to start. Thanks for replying xoxo

yesss, i’m also finishing up A levels this year and planning to go this September. i first chose biochemistry as well, but i really loved what each module entails in BioMedical Sciences. and the human body is what interested me the most so i thought it would be a better decision. but i’m kinda having second thoughts hehe. also the way i narrowed down universities was based on Modules, Entry Requirements and overall prospects for that course in that university. You can look at the UK uni rankings for Biomedical sciences/ Biochemistry and choose the ones that are applicable. then you really need to go through the modules make sure you really like what you’ll be doing in years 1 through 3. and whether the components interest you. then check the entry requirements, to see whether you can actually achieve those grades or whether you can definitely do better than them. and once you’ve got some down.. i’m pretty sure you will be able to narrow down 5!

@@aminarosh6780 thank you so much! due to covid, we haven't had much support from school and i'm literally just winging it at this point so i'll follow that advice. it makes sense. researching can be super time-consuming and whenever i think about uni, I get super anxious. but thank you for the help! do you personally have any university recommendations (i don't particularly want to be a 'biomedical scientist', and for that you need to have an accredited course which i'm not too bothered about). but thanks again xoxo
@sofiamalik5623

In terms of job prospects after doing a biomedical science degree, I would just say decide what type of work you would be more inclined to do and do your research well in advance. At the very least make sure that your university is accredited by the Institute of Biomedical Science (IBMS), as if you did want to go into a biomedical science related field, you would need to do top up modules, which essentially is a waste of time and money. The second thing I would say is decide if you want to work as a biomedical scientist or any other healthcare scientist. If the answer is yes, chances are you would need complete a HCPC registration portfolio. In London it is very competitive finding an opportunity to do this after you graduate. So if you are interested in going into the field, do a placement year and try and complete your portfolio if you have the opportunity! This will increase your employment opportunities once you graduate 😊

Having looked on the HCPC website, Westminster is one of the few (if only?) universities in London that offer an accredited HCPC degree, which is what you need to actually work as a registered Biomedical Scientist. Sounds like a no-brainer, then I looked at university rankings and unfortunately Westminster is one of the lowest in the country.. Study at Westminster and have a HCPC accredited degree or study somewhere with a higher ranking but not accredited... Difficult choice
