What if a tribute dies between the reaping and the Games?

Hi friends! today we take a look at the tributes before they go into the arena, and what would happen if one of them were to die.
The tributes are watched carefully at all times during their stay in the Capitol. But that doesn't mean one of them couldn't die. There are several reasons a tribute could die, one of the big ones being dying of natural causes, something the attendants and mentors in the Capitol would be unable to prevent. Though there are other options, but would this change the consequences?

Hi friends! A quick reminder not to post spoilers for "The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes". The book isn't out in many countries yet, and won't be for another few weeks, so it's incredibly inconsiderate. Also, many of you have been asking when I'll make videos about it. I won't be making videos about it until the movie adaptation is released, as this firstly gives everyone time to buy and read the book, and secondly will allow us to use the secondary canon that is a movie to base ideas off of. Story Diver it says in mockingjay while in winter that the 75th games took place 6 months ago so it would have to be in the summer maybe early fall

Honestly I think they'd cover it up.. stick an Avox on the pedestal and just blow it up before the audience notices and just spin it that the tribute stepped off early... Quick and effective

Yes! And I feel like that makes a pretty good case for the theory of Foxface having died by suicide; if she was intent on dying in a relatively peaceful way, she had to make it look like an accident otherwise her loved ones would face the consequences.

Though it is a very Capitol way to handle this kind of things. But like she said The Capitol wouldn't want bad press. If the family were taken then executed after they stated that the tribute died because of natural causes, it would cause a mass anger and could cause a district rebellion. Since they wouldn't understand why the family would be killed if the cause of deaths are natural causes.

The implication is that the tributes know that if they do not cooperate fully, their family and district will be punished. I think that's why they don't commit suicide or try anything rebellious.

For the tribute killing a tribute I feel the capital would actually tell the truth and spin it to their advantage and and say the tribute ms were too excited for the games and just couldn’t wait for the arena

In one of the games (just a random one) the district 1 male, killed the district 1 female, and thought they got away with it, until, the countdown began. The countdown stopped, and an ominous voice said, “The capitol see everything”, and blew up the tribute, then everything resumed like nothing happened.

I wouldnt pretend to be sick, because the capital has extremly good technology which would mean that they can prove im not sick and just send me into the games or kill me. If I were reaped for the games, my first intinct would be to find nightlock berries, so if a career tribute sees me or someone tries to kill me i could just eat them and have a peaceful death like foxface

But for that you'll have to be 1. already in the game and survived that far 2. in an arena that has those berries. Some games where in desserts, mountains etc. It will be difficult to garantie such a peaceful death.

I think if a tribute killed themself or killed some other tribute, their families would be killed. Because they went against the capitols rules.

(This is in response to the one a out a tribute killing another tribute, not the tribute killing themselves) I think that might only be the case for normal tributes. I don't think the Capitol would even think about doing anything like that to the Career tributes or their families cause they're the Capitol favourites , as well as audience favourites, if they did that, than a Career tribute could say anything while in the arena and start a full swing rebellion in point five seconds because of how much people like them and would listen to them, but in the case of non-Career tributes I can see that happening. I think in the case of a Career tribute killing a normal tribute like that, they might just say that they died of natural causes.

Natural causes normally means medically natural, say you die from old age etc. Being trampled would be deemed a tragic accident

I think it might be interesting if, in the event of a tribute killing another tribute, an announcement is made saying that whoever kills that tribute will get an extreme advantage in the Games. That would cause a bunch of tributes to clamber over each other to kill that tribute

Considering that Peeta and Katniss's double suicide attempt was seen as rebellious. This would be seen as the same thing, cause all 24 tributes made them look like a fool. However, Haymitch had told Katniss that she had to act like they were so desperately in love and that was the reason they tried to commit berries. Not rebellious. So perhaps, they would try to cover it up. Or perhaps the Gamemakers would cut it out and pretend that,"Oh this never happened!" Because who would disagree if they said that was their new reality? And the Gamemakers can probably disable the landmines manually. So they have to be swift.

Story Diver Jus wondering, every year does the Capitol tell all avoxes what clothes to wear? Because in the first movie, the ones that aren’t even in the tribute rooms are dressed up in red. Also, in the second movie, when you see them in places not including the tribute rooms, they are wearing white.

One of my oc’s was kinda like Foxface. She was clever, cold, and calculating. She killed one of the tributes in the training area, but it was too late to get a replacement, and it was covered up how he died, but people were suspicious. Their story didn’t make any sense, since he was from District 2 and very healthy. Then, in the interviews, the female from District 2 brought up the death of her partner, and told everyone that the female from district 3 killed him. Then it was her turn. She played the angle of a stone-cold killer, which she never could have pulled off otherwise. She admitted to killing him, and earned a lot of sponsors because of it.

Wouldn't it be more likely that a career would be the one to kill another tribute in the first place? So, potentially, the careers could stand in shock as they realise they're not as favoured as they thought.

It's likely it would be a career tribute, but it could be any tribute. And, though I agree they may be shocked, I think they would bounce back much faster than the other tributes

It could also be a tribute from a non-career district killing a career tribute. An example of this could be a tribute from District 7 killing a career tribute by throwing an axe.

I don't know if I remember this correctly because I read the books many moons ago, but I THINK if you want to volunteer you're supposed to do it before a name is picked and announced. They allow Katniss to take Prim's place because it looked good for the 74th Games' story (let's not forget it's a reality show after all, they definitely want a good story) to have a girl volunteering for her 12-year-old little sister, so they ended up allowing it. I could be wrong because I have a weak memory lol

Volunteers are allowed to volunteer after the name is called. Effie is thrown off by Katniss because normally she calls a name, that child goes to her on the stage and then she asks for volunteers. Katniss volunteered before Effie could ask

That's a real intersting question. I always asked myself that too. I think the Capitol would be like: Oh, the tribute died. Maybe we should reap again. Nah, lets just make Hunger Games with only 23 tributes 👍👌😂 Actually, maybe I would kill myself in the time before the games. But not in the training center. I would order food to my room, smash the plate and cut open my wrist. By the way: I do not have depressions, I will not kill myself. Everythings alright 😊. I would just maybe do that if I would have to go into the games, knowing I'll probably die anyway . But, I think I would not kill myself, I would fight! Or just beg the carrers to let me into there gang 😅😂 Have a nice day ❤️

If my name was pulled out of the glass ball I'd be in it to win it! But then as soon as i get announced winner and all the cameras are on me, I'd kill myself . 1, to prove a point that the Capitol cant win and 2, because I'd feel bad for all the tributes who weren't coming home.

The simplest way to handle this would be for the Government to have a special emergency reaping just for the District and sex concerned. Perhaps the cards are sealed after the regular reaping and kept secure until the Games actually begin for just such a possibility. If Katniss died, Prim would have almost certainly taken her place as she'd already been reaped.

I heard that they dont actually re-reap they simply go ahead with the remaining tributes because the capitol use the hunger games to punish the districts, so hearing that one of them dies and repeating the process of reaping and delaying everything is really awful and wasteful even for the gamemakers

Now I wonder what would happen if a tribute died the day or couple of days before the games started and a new tribute had to be reaped. Will they stop/postpone the games so that the new tribute has a chance to train, gets tested so that they could have sponsors, and gets to have an interview... or will they just pick them, make them travel to the Capitol the fastest way possible and just put them in the arena? I also think about this because if a tribute committed suicide, it would probably happen during the last days (since they could at least enjoy the food and everything fancy in the Capitol) before the games.

This was seen in the 10th Hunger Games where 9 tributes died before the games started The tributes were: Brandy (D10) Otto and Ginnee (D6) Facet and Velvereen (D1) Sabyn (D2) Sheaf and Panlo (D9) Hy(D5) However nothing happened, they just continued the games

Actually I can also picture the Capitol making the murderous tribute win. Picture this: The person misbehaves and turns on another tribute before the games start, therefore they're are clearly rebellious and might be involved in some kind of plan to overthrow the Capitol (I guess that's how paranoid dictators think). Just killing them off quickly is too easy. If the person survives the Games though, the Capitol can torture the tribute, murder the family and make them watch, something more impactful than just blowing them up. It seems to nice for President Snow.

I feel like another tribute, no matter the scenario, will be reaped in place of the deceased one. the Capitol need to keep the districts in line, so if dying outside of the games was an “out” to the games, they would never let that slide

You make a really good point that the capitol wouldn't want somebody who broke the rules to win. Katniss mentions Titus, a tribute from district 6 in book one, and said that he became a cannibal during the games and an avalanche occured that he *just happened* to die from. Love your videos!

I believe you were spot on for all of the causes in which a tribute may die before the games. I imagine though, since suicide would be a way of "getting out" for the tribute, that the capitol would not only immediately replace the tribute, but also go after the tribute who committed suicide's family as well.

In my opinion if someone got blown up people would stand in shock but the blood bath would be less violent because half of the kids were killed running toward the cornucopia or in it. So if they are still on their little stand then the kids would just run toward the forest seeing that all the careers are getting the weapons.

I don’t know if someone else mentioned this, but I have an idea (about the last scenario) Instead of just blowing up the tribute in the last seconds before the Bloodbath, a bounty would be placed upon this child. The killer of this certain tribute would gain some sort of advantage, such as food and weapons. So the other tributes would be encouraged to find this tribute and kill them. This would also set an example, that if you break the rules, you would be heavily punished.

I feel like another thing that could happen if a tribute killed another, is that a loved one of the killer would be put in place of the one who had died. Something along the lines of mid-countdown theres an announcement that there will be a "25" tribute joining the games as the tribute rises from a nearby pedestal

I think they'd have the Gamemakers plague the murderer right off the bat with, say, the nerve fog or something where they would almost certainly die as opposed to using the pedestals. That or they would kill at least 1 member of their family and let them know right before they went up to the arena. Or if it happened during training the Gamemakers could give them a 12 to target them like in Catching Fire. There are a lot of ways this could go.

I think the capitol would deny it and possibly make a hologram of the tribute die in the beginning, then punish the family and anyone who they thought had a part in the death

I like the idea that if a tribute kills another tribute in secret before the countdown an ominous voice says "the capitol sees everything" then the tribute who killed another tribute just explodes suddenly then 3,2,1 and begin like nothing happened

There was a situation Like that in a book, the ballad of songbirds and snakes. Almost half of the tributes died before the games. And they weren't replaced. Altough this was the 10th hunger Games, maybe rules changed since then.

In regards to the explosion, didn’t it say that there was an instance where a female tribute dropped a good luck charm and was blown up by moving off her pedestal before the games began. What would happen in that case?

If the person committed suicide then I think that the capitol would take it out on the district And if the tribute killed another tribute I feel like the capitol would either do what you said or kill the killer’s family

This happens in the movie, one of the tributes injures his leg. They are still expected to go into the arena and do their best

10th hunger games showed multiple deaths prior to the games. So honestly they wouldn’t change that from a capitol state as of the 75th. It’s possible it’d be changed but based on the 10th, it’s highly unlikely. Means the tributes have a better odds

imagine if a tribute killed themselves the morning of the games - the emergency reaping would still take too long to get the tribute from the district to the Capitol so the games get delayed

I think there'd be no explanation for that tribute's disappearance. Not even an announcement. The vacant pedestal is enough to create fear in the districts and other tributes.

What if the token that a tribute gets can split in two and the tribute throws then to either sides of them, activating the mines and blowing up the 2 tributes to either sides to them killing them before the games and having no competition next to them

I probably didn’t word it right but what I mean is that when they are in the arena the one token a tribute is allowed to take into the arena is able to split in half and the tribute throws each half into the land mines and blew up the 2 tributes on either sides of them and having a clear run to the Cornucopia

One round of the hunger games lasted a month and katniss and peetas game lasted 18 days it happens a lot

If it seems to be lasting too long then they’ll speed the process up and probably release mutts to kill them off. They’ll just push the tributes together so they’re forced to face eachother

Hey, I know this was posted ages ago but just found your account and love it! As a huge hunger games fan, after seeing this I am asking myself that what if a tribute died somehow in the area under the pedestals? (can't remember the name for them.) and also what if the newly reaped tribute didn't have training time and was at a huge disadvantage? I think the capitol would throw them in for the entertainment.I'm not sure about the first, but would love to hear some answers!

In the third cause, I read a funny fanfiction where Glimmer was killed by Effie before the games and the mentors and tributes go on a wild goose chase, so to speak, on finding who's the killer. Also, Buttercup was there.

I think in the second two situations, the family of the tribute who killed themself/killed someone else would also be killed. In the case of suicide, it would probably be execution in the town square; in the case of murder, the family's death would either be streamed to the tribute or the family would actually be taken to the capital for the tribute to see die for themself. The family would likely be flogged or tortured in some other way before death. I think it's possible they would allow a murder tribute to compete, but with some severe handicap; such as severely flogging them before sending them out, or crippling them in some other way. That way, they're standing on the pedestal knowing they won't even survive the blood bath. It's also, of course, possible, they could create a shifting pedestal that would dislodge the tribute and knock them off. This way, the explosion could very easily be explained away (they stepped off too early!)

i’m just wondering, from the career district there will always have volunteers, so if tribute from a career district dies, would the person who was originally reaped go in, since there would be so many others willing to volunteer in their place? or will the originally reaped tribute have to go in since the capitol can’t turn a blind eye to something that big?
