What If Angron Had Never Received The Butcher’s Nails? - 40K Theories

The Butcher’s Nails are a series of cranial implants that instil feelings of intense hostility and unchecked aggression within their hosts, turning once sane and reasonable men into little more than frothing berserkers. But what could have happened if Angron, the Primarch of the World Eaters legion, had himself never received such implants?

The main reason why I decided to do a remastered video on this topic, is because there was a massive influx of comments on the previous version saying I missed information from "Angron: Slave of Nuceria", despite the original video coming out close to two years _before_ that book was released. But on the plus side, this new version now has a *lot* more information within it than the original, which is always a good thing.

Angron’s such a tragic character. I really feel for him. I really do. His fate was unfair from the very beginning. From what I can tell, he was actually a very empathetic and sensitive soul who was forced on his path of damnation through no choice of his own. He didn’t deserve this. All he could do was accept his lot in life. He never had a choice of what happened to him. And though he may be a base animal now, I believe. If and when the time comes that he will be slain, do not let it be out of hatred or vitriol. Let it be a mercy killing. Let him know that he was not given up on. Let him know that he was loved. At least just for once in his miserable life. He deserves that much at least.

This sparks a sudden calm but furious Emperor to go all out on the cult in order to rescue Angron protect him by allowing him to be his personal guard; the Castodes before the Castodes! If memory serves, when Angron uses his empathic powers they say that he protects them from their nightmares Edit. quote from page 145 of "Slave of Nuceria": "... Angron places a hand on Jochuras shoulder...he closes his eyes and feels the boy's pain as through his own: heat, knifing blades, screams and the splash of hot blood in his eyes.Angron winces for a moment, and the boy goes still, his cries silenced as they are replaced by deep, dreamless sleep" So it might work on the blood angel, but it would also give it to Angron

40K Theories How about we take it one further, what if Angron used this empathic ability he possessed on, say, Konrad Curze? Would he alleviate the Night Lord's visions? Banish the Night Haunter personality from Curze's mind? What if he used this empathy on his other brothers and helped them reach compromise and companionship with each other? Could he have used this ability to broker peace deals with Xeno species like the Eldar and later the Tau? There's a lot of potential that an Angron without the Butcher's Nails could have made the grim darkness of the far future a lot less grim and/or dark.

ill be honest, considering that with the butchers nails, which are described by teh emperor as, and i quote "The Twelfth and its Legion call them the “Butcher’s Nails”.’ The Emperor kept staring at the screens. ‘You are looking at modifications to my original template of the Twelfth. More precisely, you are looking at modifications of primitive genius. Before these examinations, I had believed the enhancements performed upon the Twelfth on Nuceria were the source of its emotional instability. My hypothesis was that they stirred the Twelfth to a sense of perpetual but ultimately artificial rage. Yet the opposite is true. With the alterations made to the limbic lobe and insular cortex, the surgeons have impaired the Twelfth’s ability to regulate any emotion at all. Furthermore, they have rethreaded its capacity to take pleasure in anything but the sensation of anger. They are the only chemicals and electrical signals that flow freely through, and from, its brain. All else is either dulled to nothingness or rewired to inspire a supreme degree of agony. It is a testament to the durability of my primarch project that the Twelfth has managed to survive this long.’ ‘His own emotions cause him pain?’ ‘No, Arkhan. Everything. Everything causes it pain. Thinking. Feeling. Breathing. The only respite it has is in the rewired neurological pleasure it receives from the chemicals of anger and aggression.’ ‘That’s vile,’ said the technoarchaeologist. ‘Perversion of cognition, rather than purification.’ The Emperor showed nothing but passionless interest. ‘Such rewriting of physiology certainly hinders the Twelfth’s higher brain function. The device is cunningly wrought, for something so crude.’ ‘Can you remove it?’ ‘Of course,’ the Emperor answered, still looking at the screens. Arkhan did his best to hide his surprise. ‘Then, Divine One, why would you leave it there?’ ‘This is why.’ The Emperor rested both hands on Angron’s head, one with the fingertips pressed to the primarch’s temple and cheek, the other pressed to the crown of his shaven head where the cable-tendrils joined the flesh and bone. The images on several screens immediately resolved to a clearer imprint of a brutishly dense skull miserable with crude cybernetics and the bone-scarring of powerful surgical laser cuts. ‘Do you see?’ the Emperor asked. Arkhan saw. The tendrils were sunk deep, rooted in the meat of the brain, threaded to the nervous system, and down in roughly serpentine coils around the spinal column. Every movement must have been agony for the primarch, feeding back into the base emotions of anger and spite. Worse, the brain’s limbic lobe and insular cortex were more than just savaged by the pain engine’s insertion; they had been surgically attacked and removed even before implantation. The device hammered into his skull hadn’t ruined those sections of the brain - it had replaced them. Ugly black cybernetics showed on the internal scans, in place of entire sections of the primarch’s brain tissue. ‘They are the only thing keeping him alive,’ Arkhan said." Angron was still able to make decisions, distinguish friend from foe and in some cases create actual plans. this, mind you, while literarly only wanting to die and being in constant extreme agony. before the butcher´s nails, his willpower woulda made the other primarchs seem like pansies

I would love it if we see that this story was actually false, that the emperor did in fact help Angron but the Nobels of the world pulled out a nasty trick, inside these nails which all the slaves had, was a kill switch and that it turns out they allowed this war because to them it was funny. Now that the emperor spoiled their fun, they hit the switch and all the slaves die except Angron, who while nearly killed, is saved by the fact his nails don’t work to well and the emperor saving him. However he also suffers from memory loss becouse of it, so all he can remember is him telling the emperor to fuck off, him being teleported (this is after the big kill switch and he’s actually in the arms of a worried Emperor whose actually showing empathy and worried for his son) and then him waking up abord the ship and all his Freinds dead. This would explain this weird detail and make the story all the more tragic. Could also be that Angron refuses to listen to his father’s pleads and side of the story. Seriously, was he just on a time crunch with hoovering up the Traitor Primarchs or something? A genuinely empathetic loyalist primarch might have actually been able to prevent the heresy from being as bad as it was in the first place, or possibly happen at all. Chill Angron would be able to relate to Mortarion (they were both blueballed in their final hours by Big E), be able to give Curze the emotional support that he badly needed, and give Perturabo the appreciation that he needed so he didn't fall in with Horus. Lorgar (and by extension Horus), Fulgrim, Alpharius Omegon, and Magnus (who was well and thoroughly dicked by Tzeentch into turning traitor) would still probably end up going renegade, but with nearly half of the Traitor Legions the Heresy would not have ended so poorly.

If Angron didn't have the Butcher's Nails: His compassion towards humanity would certainly help calming down the inner rages of his gene-sons and let them see a new path in executing combat strategy. While the Warhounds legion were regarded as a shock troopers much like the Luna Wolves, their ferocity in the battlefield can be controlled by Angron but also can be contained if needed so. Angron's viewpoint in accepting new recruits for his legion would certainly boost morale in his legion. Instead of a path filled with rage, Angron might teach them to control that rage that can benefit the legion and themselves without too much sacrificing the old traditions of the legion prior meeting with their Primarch. Vulcan and Angron would certainly be the best of buddies. We all know this would happen guys. One is a large giant capable of giving great hugs while the other one is capable of giving good vibes everytime you're near him. Lastly, Angron's view in honor would certainly boost morale during the Siege of Terra. His legion could act as legion fodder for the others to plan a tactical way to strike. Let's face it, a controlled rage Warhound legionnaire would certainly complement well to the tenacity of a Blood Angel consumed by the Red Thirst minus the whole killing your own friends.

He wasn’t just empathetic, he truly believed in freedom, he says as much in his duel with Russ, he could never fulfil it as ironically the Primarch that desired freedom was given no choice. In Slave of Nuceria he's show to have the same kind of brotherly bonds with the people around him that we see Russ having, but with the kindness of Vulkan and the likability of Sanguinius. I don't think he could have kept ALL of the traitors loyal, but having someone they could talk with would have helped some of them. @YouthRightsRadical
@YouthRightsRadical 7 месяцев назад
It is precisely because Magnus had choices that could have changed the outcome that makes his fall tragic. There was a golden future that could have been reached had he heeded the warnings he was given. The tragedy is that he was blinded by his own character flaws and thus made the wrong choices at those critical moments. The tragedy is that it would have been so easy for Magnus not to have fallen. Angron never had a choice. There was no happy ending for Angron no matter what he did. Angron was a victim. Angron's fate was sad, but there is no tragedy without there having been something he could have done differently.

My favorite scenario is one you didn't explore. What if everything happened to Angron on his homeworld was the same except the butchers nails were instead a temporary combat drug. A drug he'd already broken an addiction to during his war of rebellion with the Eaters of Cities. In this timeline the Emperor steals away a sober and clear-minded Angron who wasn't a rage fueled petulant manchild. He would be able to look into his father's eye and go "You will have my unfettered loyalty for as long as the stars burn in the sky, but only after you aid me in freeing my people." Had Angron done that his relationship with Big E would have been as solid as Rogal or Ferrus. I feel the Emperor treated Angron the way he did because of heartbreak and rage. He was devastated to see what that world had made of his son, his Medicant and wanted to be rid of it as soon as possible.

A large factor in Angrons story that people tend to gloss over is how the emperor met him/the choices the emperor made upon finding him. The emperor chose to teleport Angron up to his ship yes, but also left his slave army to die, AND chose not to conquer the planet. This moment is a huge part of why Angron hated the emperor, and it effected his legion as well, they're moral/ faith in their primarch was low due to him being one of the very few primarchs to never conquer his home world. Its also strange of the emperor to make this choice seeing as how he met with Corvis Corax and helped him to conquer his world. I know you glossed over this in the video (as this video was more about the butchers nails and not the whole of Angrons story) but it is weird to see people just gloss over this part of his story as it pretty much the main reason that Angron came to hate his father. I wonder how Angrons story would have changed if the emperor chose to help Angron in taking the world that enslaved him instead.

I think Angron's story is probably one of the most captivating of all the background stories of the primarchs. Most of them have fairly complicated backgrounds, but Angron's is as simple as it is tragic. Personally I'm pretty sure that the emperor of mankind along with the Selenar, Malcador and the mechanicum could've removed those butcher's nails or disabled them if push came to shove. The emperor could've helped Angron through his rebellion, score the loyalty of Angron and removed those nails or done something else with them entirely. It seems so little to ask for and yet those decisions had such gruesome consequences for the empire of mankind.

I feel you miscalculated the effects of a non Buchter-Nails Angron at the Istvaan system and the battle of Terra. As you mentioned, Horus and his traitor legions would save months from not fighting on the ground at Istvaan, and any follow up attacks on Imperial systems would be completely by surprise, which may have created a domino effect, meaning the traitor legions got to Terra faster, and in far greater number, due to reduced losses. Depending on how fast Horus and his traitor legions reached Terra, the battle changes massively. Firstly, Horus arrives at Terra before any other legion, just leaving the defensive forces in the Sol System to hold him back, primarily the Custodes. Not the emperor as he would be too busy dealing with the warp tear (assuming Magnus acted the same) and Malcador could not sit on the throne for the entire siege. The reinforcing Legions would then be forced to engage is a colossal naval engagement, to try and reach Terra before it falls. If Horus arrived just before Russ left Terra to hunt him, that would be another Legion, and most importantly, Primarch to fight him. The effects of the battle on ground are too numerous to list them all, but let's assume the teleport assault on Horus' Flagship happens like normal. Due to his wolf/hunter like nature. Russ would have reached Horus before the Emperor did his final act. Whether or not he reached Horus in time to save Sanguinius, or even arriving before Sanguinius, is once again, a list of possibilities too numerous to talk about, save one. The Emperor would not have suffered so greatly at Horus' hands, as he would have, in any order, the support of two of the best close combat Primarch's to aid him in that fight, both being proven to having been able to mortally wound Horus. So even in the worst case scenario, I foresee the Emperor maintaining enough of his health and mind, to rule the Imperium himself, even if he is forced to remain on Terra afterwards. Either due to physical injury, or just politics. Everything after that, once again, is so full of possibilities I'am not even going to think about it right now. Outside of Magnus not causing a Warp Breach on Terra, I cannot think of any single act of the Horus Heresy being so influential. Well, besides the obvious corruption of Horus himself. Still, a fun video none the less.
