What if Hendrix and Zeppelin played SELMER instead of MARSHALL?!

Would Selmer be as iconic as Marshall is today if the famous bands would have gone for Selmer instead of Marshall in the late 1960s? In this video I demonstrate a completely amazing Selmer Treble and Bass 50 from the early 1970s. Let's go! :-)

Sounds super cool! Great demo Johan! Jim Marshall who was a professional drum started to sell drumkits to his drum students in late 1950´s. They eventually took their guitar players and bass players and other musicians with them to Jim who started to sell Selmer equipment. When Jim open his first music store the 7th of July 1960 he was already an Selmer retailer. He eventually hired Ken Bran to help him out with servicing all the amps. Later Ken Bran brought along his armature radio ham friends Dudley Craven and Ken Underwood and they suggested they make an amp themselves. So one night they copied the notorious American (Guitarist in UK talk about this amp but few had heard it) amp the Bassman that Ken Bran had in for service in the shop. In September 1963 (Not 1962) they demoed the first amp at the Ealing Club in London and the JTM45 was born…

I know one of those old drummers. He became good friends with Jim after being his student. Years and years later Jim was still sending Bob boxes of Hi-Fi stuff (thanks to Marshall's affiliations with Goodmans+Celestion) and some amps came along with them. I was the lucky recipient of a couple of them. I still have a Selmer T&B50 MkII from one of those "care packages". Currently being recapped. Incidentally, Bob assisted Jim in the construction of the first 4x12 Cabs. He said many speaker combinations were tried before they found one that the new amp wouldn't blow during soak testing. We might just as easily have ended up with 2x15s or 6x10s as the "Standard" ... funny how history works out isn't it.

I've had a 62' croc Zodiac Twin 30 for forty years, best amp ever, channel 1 is straight EL-34 power/Marshall tone, channel 2 is multi push button tone selectors for some of the cleanest chime ever, more so than a Top Boost AC-30. Pete Townsend used Selmer amps during the "Pictures of Lily" era, Gerry & the Pacemakers had all Selmer amps, Steve Winwood in early Traffic, many more.

mmMMMmmmm . . . . . . yes and no. In Germany, they had this TV show called 'Beat-Club'. If you wanted to succeed Europe-wide, your management booked you on that show. The production company that put it on owned this backilne of Selmers, as they were quite a bit cheaper than Marshalls, and much less robustly built. The Cream played thru the exact same amps The Who played thru.

Sounds absolutely killer. The distortion is tight and gritty, no harsh fizziness on top, very nicely balanced and full. Selmer has made some of the best instruments of all time (vintage saxophones worth $$$). Seems their quality extended to amps as well!

Very impressive! I liked the sound more and more as the video was progressing. At first it sounded quite dark to me but them from 3:40 it began to be more of my thing. Beautiful sound. 7:30 is amazing too and it sounds fantastic when you boost up the highs. Funny thing is that it has some particular crunch I only get from a preset that I made on my begginer practice amp Line 6 Spider (on "Crunch" mode) when I was small. That thing, believe it or not, sings like this and resonates with the same tonality if you tweak it right. And now I can hear that very particular kind of crunch on a propper vintage tube amp! I'll keep the Spider! The reverb it had was nice too and reminds me of your room 😂Maybe that is an interesting thing to study too, killer tones from cheap amps. It sometimes happens Thanks a lot man! Very good job. I'll look forward to the next video! A hug from Spain :) Samuel & Sin In The Flesh

some gorgeous sounds here (not surprising from Johan! the riff and tone at 2:09 is stunning). To me this sounds darker/bassier than a marshall so might not cut through a mix quite as well, but on it's own is awesome. Great lead tone. I have a couple of Selmers, a Treble n Bass RSV 50 watt like yours and a Zodiac 100 watt; this features a footswitchable tremolo effect aswell as spring reverb. You're closer than you think. Hendrix _did_ use a Selmer when he first arrived in England...and _hated_ it. He went through several different amps before settling on Marshall as his main amp, but he would use any amp that suited his needs in the studio. Notably Fender. Led Zeppelin, on the other hand, toured with Rickenbacker amps for a while. Large solid state amps that sound...harsh. You might still be able to find one or two of them floating around. The ones that weren't thrown out. Certainly Page would have used a Selmer at one point or another in his career, or at least tried one.

Theres really no log of what he used on any given song, but Page is a tone geek so he probably never met an amp or device he didnt like or at least try to coax a sound out of. @Johan Segeborn I had a treble and bass head but it was an earlier model with black faceplate and knobs all horizontal not verticle like yours. It looked way different than this but it also didn't sound as good as this. It was kind of boring and too clean. Didn't break up like the one in this video. Not even close. Maybe closer to a Fender blackface but not quite. I like this one. Are they under a grand?

Hi Johan. To my ears it sounds with less treble and mids than Jimi's Marshall, and also maybe it has a little more gain, like a fuzz. Other than that it sounds brutally wonderful. See you friday. Cheers.

Thanks Bryan, I’m very conservative when it comes to Les Pauls I’m afraid. But Standard and Traditional ate great instruments too. The best newly built Les Paul I’ve played was the CC#15. Cheers

This was my first amp back in 1970. I never liked it, dumped it for a Marshall. Sounds not so bad here though. I played Cream and Hendrix numbers back then.

With the low end girth it’s probably more comparable to an Orange?

Syd Barrett used a Selmer TnB MkII when he was with Pink Floyd. I'm surprised you didn't plug a Telecaster in the Selmer.

@@JohanSegeborn Another interesting amp from that era is a Laney Super PA head. Very similar to the Laney LA100BL/Supergroup amp but has a master volume control and effects loop. The tone stack is a bit different, but a lot of similar character.

SORRY I missed the Prem Johan! Had it open and ready, then went to get a cup of tea whilst waiting, went to check on my dog and cover her up as it's still cool at night here, and found she'd been sick all around her bed! MASSIVE spew all over the place, poor puppy! :o( At least she had the sense to vomit over the side of her bunk onto the tiles. Took me 1/2 an hr to clean the mess up! She's tucked up in bed now asleep! Anyhoo, to the video at hand! Sounded good, but I thought the bass channel was just TOO bassy for a guitar, esp on the neck pick up. Very flubby! Maybe cut the bass and crank the treble further. Treble channel sounded PERFECT however! Classic crunch! Rockin'! \m/

This was my first amp besides the toy Marshall that came with my first guitar. My grandad gave it to me when I was 12/13 years old. It was so loud my parents wouldn't let me switch it on claiming "I can hear the strings fine without the amplifier". I actually didn't think it was a 'proper' guitar amp when I got it because he was an accordion and keyboard player and unlike my toy Marshall it didn't have an 'overdrive button' or gain knob. I didn't even have proper guitar speaker cab for it. It ended up going back to him but I got it back many years later when he passed on. By then I was much older, moved out of my parents house and knew a lot more. I got it with a gutted WEM cab utilised just for it's 15" Goodman's guitar speaker. To me it's a LOUD 50w. Take it somewhere where you can link the channels together and dime it - wow. I've always wanted someone like yourself with lots of experience to do a video on one so chuffed you have. I actually used mine to play Metallica and ran a Blackstar Dist-X preamp pedal into the normal input. I replaced a bunch of the pots too and fitted some black metal knobs. Came with Mullard El34's

Great demo, Johan! I just bought a 1967/68 Selmer Treble N Bass head. Wonderful amp. Rumor has it that Paul Kossoff in fact used a Selmer TNB when recording the studio version of "All Right Now". Do you know if there is any truth to that? Takk for alle videoene du legger ut. Utrolig mye bra!
