Q&A with the coach. What if I competed in UFC one instead of Royce Gracie? How would I do against fighters like the 1993 versions Ken Shamrock and Art Jimmerson With modern mixed martial arts skills?

I would not say this whole thing is a brag or something. In previous video you said you would squash without any issue your previous and younger self. So over time people who put the effort to improve get better (it would be quite sad if it didn't), so being able to at one point outperform even historical world champion in some certain field is not bad. It shows how we grow. The whole MMA is a fairly new sport historically speaking and it's still improves rapidly. I bet that in 20 years or so the trends will be even more refined and would watch at the strategies and today's competitors as 'good for their time'.

Fun fact... there was a young Hung Gar Kungfu fighter in the early No Holds Barred UFC Tourneys, and he was really good, he won both of his bouts with a fast finish. His name is Onassis Parungao. A lot of people didn't see him on the taped UFC events though, because there were some bouts that were considered "UFC Alternate bouts" and they were not on the "main" card. Not much money involved at that time so he fought over in a Russian MMA organization afterwards. Great guy, and very savvy on both old school Gongfu lineage history and modern Sanda and combat sports. This is an interesting question. The Gracie strategy is one of the most effective ones ever invented. I think that many modern day MMA fighters would not be as successful as Royce was. The Gracie strategy was more focused on self defence (I.e) minimising taking damage than trying to win a fight. Thus the claims by grandmaster Helio that he had never lost a fight. The Gracie strategy is essentially to shut down someone’s offensive capabilities. By attacking your opponent you expose yourself to counter attacks…….so the Gracie strategy would be more effective for a smaller person to use if he or she wants to take minimal damage.

Royce didn't do anything wrong, mma just didn't exist in it's modern form back then. Fighters like Ramsey or any other modern mma fighter have a multitude of skills standing and on the ground, but most importantly they have the transitions from one to the other. Also stamina is determined by how often you have done a movement, so mma fighters nowadays would outlast the competitors back then as they've spent an incredible amount of time going through the movements necessary for mma. And then last but not least, knowledge accumulates over time, even a lot of fans nowadays know more about mma than most fighters back then, for the simple fact that mma didn't exist back then.

Hey Coach, I've always had a question that I've wanted to ask you because I think you're one of the few people who might have a real answer for an arguably silly question. There are a lot of fighting styles that don't hold up to reality, but what if we take the area of the pressure test out of reality. If you factor in super powers priorities become different. An example I always go back to is someone like the Flash could build a fighting style around Aikido and boxing with minimal takedown defense and no kicks. The logic is with super speed you could get the perfect position with perfect timing that aikido requires but a leg injury or being on the ground would completely neutralize the major advantages of the powers so you'd just learn enough grappling to never go to the ground. But with that as an example what are some other "bad techniques" can you think of that might be ideal in a reality that isn't ours used by someone who is more than human. Also a friend suggested a Collab between you and another Chinese RU-vidr and I'm going to suggest it to you as well. But Naomi Wu was planning a video on fighting. He suggested you to her I'm suggesting her to you.
@CoolGeekDefence

That's a good question I love it I might have to steal that video idea lol you can literally make any fighting style work with the right super powers (including no touch) I love super speed as a power to pair with martial arts because if you have a big enough speed advantage over someone you can do pretty much whatever you want to them

7:22 So with his judo, wrestling, kickboxing and all the other styles he mixed, Bruce would probably kneestomp the hell out of this guy from a safe distance, or shoot a takedown and choke out, or armbar him, or heel hook, etc. According to Gene Labell, Bruce was a good grappler and he sparred with Pro kickboxers; I'm not saying he would win the tournament, but he definitely would be able to take down a boxer, back then especially. Anybody with decent distance management and grappling skills could. I'm just saying, a completely untrained person can tackle someone who just boxes and ground-and-pound them...even though people inflate and exaggerate Bruce Lee's capabilities, doesn't mean we can't look at his actual skills, physicality and training, for what it was. Just because people think Bruce was a God, doesn't mean we have to act like he was trash, people; he wasn't either...I'm not saying that to anyone specifically, just in general

@miesvaillanykyisyytta3252 2 года назад
A completely untrained person has a much better chance of kicking a BJJ black belt in the wedding tackle than he has of rushing from a distance and tackling some fit boxer to the ground IMHO. When you write "tackle" I'm assuming you're talking about someone accelerating football style and crashing against the other person. You have time to react if somebody bum rushes you like that (there's actually a famous video where this incredibly athletic TKD guy jumps over a big guy Tekken style who bum rushes him in the octagon*) but if a regular gym guy sucker punches the olympic judo champion on the street I'm putting my money on the regular gym guy who has done bag work. Any normal person will close their eyes, turn their head and take the punch unless they are a boxer; punches happen scary fast. If somebody grabs you, you are not in pain or peril and can use your muscle or strikes to escape. *Sadly because of the massive weight mismatch the TKD guy was badly hurt afterwards but to this day that's possibly the most incredible athletic feat I have seen on video relating to martial arts. There's a move in Tekken 3 where the Chinese woman fighter jumps over the opponent and kicks them in the back of the neck on her way down. It seems cartoonish and highly unrealistic but this TKD guy did it for real. It would be an easier feat for a callous and cold blooded person to jump on the head of someone who went for a double leg and possibly paralyze or kill them.

I am a college student and I don't have enough time to go to the gym and train. But I do love to train just for the fun of it and making progress. I've trained in Shotokan karate in high school for about 2 years and boxing ever since. I've been boxing for about 1 year now. though I haven't been in a real match ever I did use to spar quite intensely in my gym. The sparring sessions are what I miss the most but I do train from home. I also love training outdoors whenever I get the chance. My workouts usually involve bodyweight movements , heavy bag work and a lot of cardio up to 45mins per session(what can I say I just feel like running sometimes). Ken is either mistaken or just plain lying. Watch the fight again. It was clearly not a gi choke. It was a standard rear naked choke. And they did not take Ken's shoes away. Since we're on UFC 1, I have a question. What would the martial arts world look like if Ken Shamrock had executed that heelhook he went for on Royce Gracie rather better and managed to get the victory? Would bjj be as big of a thing, or would we see catch/shooto schools in every town? Would MMA be as big (was one of the reasons for its success the narrative that a skillful smaller fighter could beat the big guys, and would the Gracies have continued to push forward with it)? Would the 'wrestler with submissions who could strike a bit' model in fact have advanced the progression of MMA towards its current position somewhat earlier? I suppose what I'm asking is about the impact of UFC 1 happening, vs the impact of Royce Gracie winning it. Would we live in a very different world if Ken Shamrock, who looked like the kind of guy you would expect to win it, had done so (assuming he beat Gordeau, which doesn't seem unreasonable).
@aluisiofsjr
@aluisiofsjr 2 года назад
Ken Shamrock did not got that heelhook because Royce Gracie did a very basic defense on that.
@Stu939
@Stu939 2 года назад
@@aluisiofsjr completely true, but I'm sure you can see from the footage that the defense was made somewhat easier by a technical error on Ken Shamrock's part in the heat of the moment. I'm asking about a hypothetical alternate universe in which Shamrock had executed that heelhook with Gordon Ryan levels of ability, or even just gotten lucky with it, and won. I'm really just asking what would have happened if Shamrock won by any means, rather than the likelihood of that happening, but the heelhook seemed like a good moment to single out as a potential point that could have plausibly gone differently for the purposes of a counterfactual.
@matsutendai
@matsutendai 11 месяцев назад
He should have won that fight. No weapons were allowed, so they told Shamrock not to use his shoes, then Royce uses his Gi to choke him. UFC1 was setup to favour the Gracies so they could make money and gain fame. It has no credibility.

So I have a similar question. If you took Mike Tyson, like Olympics era, early in his career before he had that loss and everything went downhill. And you had him replace any fighter in UFC 1 (Other than Gracie), and gave him 6 months to train (with any training available at that time, ergo no MMA stuff, just whatever he would pick), how would he do? Who could he replace to have the highest level of effectiveness, how would he train? I think that is a pretty interesting hypothetical for me, because when people talk about Tyson in the context of "What if he was in MMA" it's always about him as a striker, but I think with his physical build, he would probably be pretty dangerous in any area he tried to master, and I think given his work ethic it's unlikely that he wouldn't work on grappling and kicks and that sort of thing.

The vast majority of 200 lb untrained men would get mauled by the UFC women's straw weight division. If we're talking about a 260 NCAA football player with no fight training, that's different. But they don't need to actually get into a fight with these women to test their theory. They can go into a jujitsu gym and challenge the smallest 115 lb blue belt and find out how long they would last.
@miesvaillanykyisyytta3252
@miesvaillanykyisyytta3252 2 года назад
I don't think so. We have seen enough evidence of male bodybuilders doing friendly matches against male black belts. The only way those women could somewhat conveniently hurt male bodybuilders is by biting and groin kicks and the like. Martial arts are not magic; in a messy room with no rules and no space for fancy tricks NFL players could beat male UFC fighters. If a man has to sweat for minutes and get into convoluted positions to "destroy" (barely win) a male bodybuilder then women are out of luck. If barely winning while going red in the face and being sore for a week afterwards is "mauling" I can only imagine that the martial arts community has invented more words to describe cases where the MA fighter is not struggling against someone 'untrained'. Also those jujitsu sparring matches are mostly about being the best at finding very unconventional and sometimes inconvenient ways to make someone submit. I'd much rather have the worst strongest 115 lb black belt twist my fingers and grab my throat than any decent arm wrestler over 200 pounds who can win some local competitions. It does not take much skill to bang someone's head against the concrete floor or crank their neck with everything you have; it's all about height and muscle and you don't have to look for a convient leverage position forever. You just grab and go to work. But in judo, BJJ you avoid all the obvious stuff that would end a fight quickly and try to wiggle yourself into an unconventional victory. I'm not saying it's wrong or ineffective; they are impressive athletes in their own right and it does not hurt to know all those moves but it's a bit disingenious to imply that some massive stud is "helpless", "destroyed" or other hyperbolic terms because they cannot safely and gently wiggle a smaller person into a position approved of in that sport. It's hard enough to wash a resisting cat as any decent person will try to do it gently without hurting the cat but if all you had to worry about was cleaning the animal's fur (with no regard for its well-being) they could just squeeze the life out of the cat to overcome resistance and then wash it. Now how would a female chess master or figure skater do against an untrained 200 lb guy? She would maul for real because those sports are not based on strength and height. A female salsa champion could also effortlessly outdance a 200 pound man without breaking sweat, struggling for minutes and going red in the face and almost having to go to hospital. A tiny guy or a woman can train all his or her life in something they don't have the genetics to be a top dog in and barely win someone untrained or they could have gone into dancing at a young age and dominate for real.
