This video is focused around a "what if" I came up with around the time of the Fallout TV show. The idea that Maxson's reforms to the Brotherhood of Steel had failed and how it would change things. Hope you enjoy. #fallout4 #fallouttvshow #whatif #videoessay

Nice theory crafting. Something I think is worth pointing out is that there is a distinct lack of detailed records of Maxson coming into absolute power, and many key personnels, such as Star Paladin Cross, entirely disappear from records. In FO3 we do see much of the BoS supports Lyon's pursuit and aim, but in FO4 just 10 years later BoS is almost as fanatic and full of personal worship as the Children of Atom. This could be an indication that a purge happened in BoS. It is likely that the Outcasts were used as the purging force shortly after the reintegration. And given that people with very little tactical thinking will consider a long range expedition a bad idea without first squashing "internal disputes", it is likely that such a purge would be somewhere between 2283 and 2286 (give them sometime to prepare and travel). Therefore, Scenario 2 is more likely to happen in the Capital than the Commonwealth if Maxson's purge failed..

Thanks for watching. I think it is mentioned that a few dozen departed the Bos when Maxson took over, combine that with the re-integration of the Outcasts and it could definitely make the process appear fast than usual. I don't personally think Maxson would purge his members for not holding absolute loyalty to him as he was pretty repulsed by the idea of people worshipping him. But its not entirely impossible.

The latter scenario’s line of thinking is similar to how I think Maximus’ arc will go in future Fallout seasons. I could see him feeling conflicted between his obligations to Quintus’ Brotherhood and his idealism of what a BoS Knight should be. I imagine that he finds a journal or other record of Elder Lyons’ life in the Capital Wasteland, and how his priorities align with Maximus’ ideals. Therefore, I believe that Maximus’ will eventually overthrow Quintus’ and adopt Lyons’ philosophy, gradually following Lucy eastward and blazing a new, more benevolent path for the BoS to follow.

Sounds a lot like what happened to the New Vegas, with being so reduced and cut off that they basically bunker up and wither. But here they also have a group actively pressuring them as well, not just letting them rot.

Exactly, because the more fundamentalist chapters of the Brotherhood don't recruit outsiders, they can't replenish their numbers fast enough after defeats, so have to basically go into hiding, which makes their problems worse.

One thing you forgot about in Option 1 was the fact that Lyons and his Brotherhood *were already* abandoned by the West Coast elders by the time of Fallout 3. It is stated in dialouge that the east coast chapter was already cut off from the resources and authority of the west coast when they found out about Lyons straying away from the core goal. So the west coast elders couldn't just "call back" the chapter. (Also, Arthur isn't the grandson of Roger Maxson. Fallout 3 is 200 years after the Great War, that is way too many generation for him to be a grandson.)
@RNGTherapy
@RNGTherapy Месяц назад
When Maxson ascended to Elder he learned that the West Coast was secretly monitoring/spying on the East Coast the whole time. So I don't think it would be too far out the realm of possibility for the West Coast Elders to break the silence by recalling them. Also you are correct, Arthur is the great great grandson. That's an error on my part. Thanks for pointing that out.
@tinaherr3856
@tinaherr3856 Месяц назад
@@RNGTherapy the thing is, the east coast chapter was already considered rougue by the time of Fallout 3. And given that this scenario didn't have changes to the Brotherhood/the reforms, the east coast chapter (especially the newer members) wouldn't really have a reason to listen to the west coast. The Outcasts would (since they are loyal, and wanted to reestablish communications according to some of their dialouge). But the newer east coast chapter, with a different mission and without the Outcasts integrated or Maxson's new policies and vision, they wouldn't have to obey and call back. And given they would be dragged into a war with a powerful nation, they would have even more reasons to refuse
@RNGTherapy
@RNGTherapy Месяц назад
That's a good point. There is a good chance that many east coast members, particularly those who were recruited from the east coast, would refuse the call to return west. However, most of the east coast chapter is still comprised of those who came west. I feel that with a lack in strong leadership and supply issues, those original members who travelled from the west would chose to follow the Outcasts in returning in order finally put an end to their faulting presence in the east and help defend the Brotherhoods home territories. But you make an excellent point nonetheless.

I'd bet the Lyonists would join the minutemen
@RNGTherapy
@RNGTherapy Месяц назад
Thanks for watching. I feel like that kind of merge would only be possible if the Minutemen were back on their feet by the time the BoS arrived in the Commonwealth. If they aren't it would be far more likely for surviving Minutemen to join the Lyonsists as they have an existing structure, knowledge of how to combat the BoS and advanced combat training. A formal Lyonsist/MM alliance would be awesome.
@ElderJohnson77
@ElderJohnson77 Месяц назад
Nah, if anything, the Lyonists sounded like raiders, and the minutemen didn't like raiders, but I could see Maxson and the rest of his brotherhood going to the castle and informed them of them and how they are raiding settlements and probably join forces to stop them with Maxson even though i don't see it happening bring the Prydwen to the castle since it's not that far away from the airport to confused the Lyonists
@RNGTherapy
@RNGTherapy Месяц назад
In my mind that doesn't make any sense. If the Lyonists are trying to live up to the ideals of Elder Lyons Brotherhood, raiding civilians would be the last thing they would do. Also, the Minutemen would definitely not help the BoS in this time line as they are aggressively extorting food from Commonwealth farms, like raiders do. Lyonists would be the one protecting farms from Teagan's raiding parties.

Notes/ideas I do have a slight issue with the second failure I do believe lyonists would prove a challenge but I doubt they would outright leave maxion basically being the Napoleon of the brotherhood taking the failing dying brotherhood and changing it into a Coast dominating superpower in the wasteland making it the strongest chapter in the series yet but i could see a timeline where the brotherhood grows to hate maxion and eventually overthrowing him entirely maxion is a good leader reorganizing the brotherhood giving him unprecedented power and loyalty but he is a Young man and can act rashly and quickly as seen in red glare with the railroad with lack of victories and progress on the liberty prime project we see many brotherhood members and command very disgruntled Teagan being used as a scapegoat most likely blaming the equipment he gave out ingrum being chewed out most likely to to lack of progress on the Liberty prime project we see quinlin very eager for any documents to try and aid the war effort and cade very overwhelmed with moral so low and maxions anger growing by each failure pushing even his most loyal away if this continues for a time and the added pressure from the lyonists criticizing the farm raids and the lack of results discontent with leadership would spread like wildfire eventually leading to maxions overthrow with leadership empty i can see two options for elder paladin dance or captain kells Dance Dance was a proud maxion follower although a good soldier he lacks imagination he would most likely refocus the brotherhood to fight the institute more taking resources off other missions like ghouls and super mutants I don't see his rule being that grand most likely ending in being stuck and potentially stepping down Captain kells Kells is older than maxion and worked very close to him and not wanting to fall to the same fate it seems like he was the one organizing most operations examples are when telling the brotherhood about Arcadia you talk to kells not maxion most if not all plans kells made having to be approved by maxion but with kells in charge he would most likely focus on quick sweep and retrieve not patrolling the Commonwealth anymore and a higher focus on appeasing the lyonists i could see kells pulling out of the Commonwealth to ensure his transition of power is recognized most likely leaving a part of the brotherhood in the Commonwealth to monitor The institute and to keep giving data to the capital wasteland kells possibly returning once the brotherhood is ready But whoever takes up elder after maxion it's clear that the failures up to that point would be placed squarely on maxion the entire Commonwealth being the blunder of a young elder who throughout his life being fed the idea that he's soul was forged in eternal steel leading to a overzealous and proud leader the blame being pushed on maxion would vindicate other brotherhood command after maxion blaming them over and over he would most likely be seen as a good leader of smaller operations but not good as handling full scale campaigns overall they would gloat on the failures of what was essentially a profit of steel (There were things I left out because this is already super long things like the gunners smelling blood in the water with a weakened brotherhood making them more aggressive and the importance of certain brotherhood members like haylen in the lyonists movement and the failure of the brotherhood at the battle of bunker hill leading to frustrated troops potentially taking it out on civilians reducing recruitment numbers and i would also find it cool if you did an alternate history on his Sarah lyons never died thanks)
@RNGTherapy
@RNGTherapy Месяц назад
I think the issue with this is that Maxson has developed a cult like following within the Brotherhood and deposing someone who has a quasi-religious/cult leader status is very unlikely (but I will admit, not impossible). I do completely agree that Maxson could throw Teagan under the bus if the criticism became too much. It is perfectly plausible for Danse or Kells to replace Maxson if he is deposed but this would likely do little to appease Lyonsists as both men are incredibly pro-Maxson. Danse would be a more appealing choice, particularly after Blind Betrayal. Whoever does take up the mantle of Elder after Maxson is deposed would almost certainly be better off halting operations for a small time in order to re-establish/reset it's image within the Commonwealth and build up a local government (similar to the CPG) in order to improve the legitimacy of its presence. Those last points and ideas in the brackets are all good points too. Thanks for watching and commenting. Glad you enjoyed.
@scpfoundation2040
@scpfoundation2040 Месяц назад
@@RNGTherapy of course and you have good points but with the constant scolding of the leadership and high ranking officers (the throwing of teagan is very strongly alluded to in red glare as he says (keep your head down or they'll use you as the next scapegoat) this could trickle down to the soldiers their image of maxion becoming sullied from a unstoppable force to failure after failure and his own high command badmouthing him as seen in red glare with many of the named characters commenting on the bad treatment it would be slow but i can see the lyonists spreading propaganda that would root in the minds of the upset troops eventually leading to maxions downfall and rise of another officer (or potential influential lyonist i see haylen fitting this bill pretty good) if this were to happen it could lead to another schism which is why i included the part about kells returning to the capital the reason I chose kells and dance what's simply due to high-ranking oppositions and I believe that they would not be terrible leaders for the now uncertain brotherhood
@scpfoundation2040
@scpfoundation2040 Месяц назад
@@RNGTherapyof course I'm happy to see some fallout alternate history very interesting topic my main argument with the overthrow of maxion is his constant scolding of the brotherhood high command upon failures as you see in the quest red glare with the railroad that it is strongly alluded to maxion throwing teagan under the bus upon speaking to him he says "keep your head down or you could be the next scapegoat" this isn't an isolated incident with the hounding of his officers this could trickle down to the soldiers (not even mentioning the lyonists propaganda that would undoubtedly take root) and the main reason I chose kells and dance was I believe they wouldn't be terrible leaders for a uncertain brotherhood and they are both high ranking officers (which an influential lyonist could easily take power i believe haylen to fit this bill) i think kells would be the best option from here he saw the brotherhood pre maxion and would most likely do anything to not follow fall and avoid another schism pandering to the lyonists maybe giving one the rank of captain or even sentinel to appease them
@RNGTherapy

Wow, I'm not sure I've ever heard that dialogue but I'm really tempted to go looking for it now. That definitely changes some things then. I hadn't thought about the fact that Kells had seen the BoS pre-Maxson so that is a good point to.

It didn't take long for me too realize the Brotherhood in Fallout 4 we're just a militia starting a war Not the same Brotherhood from the other games. Maxon is a psycho, anything he sees as inhuman he will kill immediately. Ghouls, Synths or Super Mutants. When the game shows us that all 3 have redeeming qualities -Hancock and the other thousands Ghouls living normal lives - Strong, the friendly super Mutant - then Nick valentine and Dima, both Synths. Nick is considered the best detective in the commonwealth The FO4 Brotherhood is basically the Gunners with a blimp and better weapon and armor

I honestly always liked Lyons more than the Maxon and outcast's. Brotherhood ideology of just keeping the technology for themselves without creating anything new is morally old. It made sense in a first 50-80 years after the war but not as civilizations started to rise up and humanity actually started to develop again. Maxon despite being smart and having a good point at some aspects is still seems to be way too radical and not pragmatic, he has experience but he is still not fully ready for being elder and makes many many mistakes. He destroys institute with all of it silver handed and golden minded scientists and hell tone of valuable technologies people of the wasteland (at least in east coast, in West we have House and think tank) will have to work hard for CENTURIES to gain. He disrespects people of the commonwealth and their culture and interests seeing them as just a merely toys on a table. He placed such a big amount of officers, weapons, vertibirds, experienced soldiers and even himself on a prydwen which is easy asf target. Some mf on Psychos who lets say, found fat boy with mini nuke in a pile of junk outside of sanctuary hills can put an end in to half of brotherhood resources with one damn click and one good shot . Some may say: "brotherhood were always menace" and i say: YES they are and I'm honestly sick of it. I'm tired of seeing both brotherhood and enclave as a menace, it makes factions boring 😑, years passes and they all stays the same, factions and states has a habit to change their policy as they exists y'know?
@RNGTherapy
@RNGTherapy Месяц назад
Thanks for watching, I'm glad you enjoyed it. I agree. I always loved the Lyons Brotherhood. His idealism may have been a bit much in the mind of the other Brotherhood Elders but making the wasteland a better place makes life easier for everyone, BoS included. The Brotherhoods hoarding of tech is definitely unhelpful as the tech could be used to make places safe and more liveable. I somewhat disagree with your criticism of the Institutes destruction as if the Institute had remained intact after a BoS victory, the opportunity would be too great for the Institute to re-establish itself and go back to its old ways. But the death of scientists (particularly those who don't fight back) is definitely a setback in terms of scientific advancement which could have helped the Commonwealth. I totally agree with the Prydwen being a huge target. It would have been far more effective/safer for the BoS to deploy to the Commonwealth in the Prydwen and then fortify a location (similar to the creation of the Citadel prior to F03) and then land the Prydwen or have it leave entirely. Yeah, I don't like the direction that the BoS has gone in, with it essentially being a slightly less evil Enclave. I don't think they were always a menace but they definitely are now.
@alexref6074
@alexref6074 Месяц назад
@@RNGTherapy I mean, not all institute scientists are bad people, there are folks who actually try their best for the humanity and if I'm not wrong there ARE people who are against isolation policy, all we need is to get rid of radical elements in derectorate and get rid from father and institute will be ready to open itself for commonwealth or at least cooperate with them. I think the destruction of institute is a Bethesda attempt into grey moral like "i won, but at what cost" because MC sons dies feeling hate, regret, sadness towards his parent. I think Bethesda should have done something like in project Valkyrie (i know not the best example considering you turn institute into basically bardel in it but still) where you arest/kill father and some radical elements of institute responsible for creation of super mutants and replacing people with synths and then slowly integrating institute into society or like in a minuetman take over institute mode where you basically occupy them and still use their technology, you still lose your son but it's for the better good. In perspective IT'S smth like followers of apocalypse and great khans union from new Vegas. I believe Lyons would be more tolerant towards institute advocating for it's pacification/occupation instead of genocide even though i dunno what would their opinion on synths be. Lyonist being in charge like in your video creates in fact perfect ending for fallout 4, lyons pride as a special force's, minuetman under SS is an army/militia, railroad is a secret agency/police institute is a brain's
