What If Poland Betrayed Ukraine? | Alternate History

Poland has historically been one of Ukraine's closest allies, but at the root of this alliance is a desire for Poland to increase its strength, and bolster its security against Russia. With Russia's 2022 invasion of Ukraine, the Poles have become increasingly invested in the Russo-Ukrainian Conflict, with a Russian source suggesting that Poland may be preparing to launch its own invasion of Western Ukraine if Kiev appears to be approaching surrender, or if Russia manages to push even further Westward toward Transnistria or the Dnieper River. In such a scenario, we're left wondering would Poland follow actually do this? And what if Poland betrayed Ukraine by invading the West while Russia invaded the East?

Poles now see Ukrainians as Poles from 1939 - this emotion is super strong, not very well understood in the west that sees WWII through american movies perspective where war is basically fun action and american hero is untouchable, can do some Rambo stuff with german tanks. The perspective in Poland is radically different. This is why Poland will never backstab Ukraine. That would be like spitting in the memory of all those millions who died during WWII.

Interesting scenario, but hardly a possibile one. No one in Poland, maybe except a very small numer of radicals, would be in favour of such an invasion. 1:48 - That's a slight mistake, Poland is not europ-skeptic, in fact Polish population is among the highest pro-EU stance among all EU countries. What Poland is skeptic of is the further EU integartion i.e. more power to France and Germany and less power to member states. Why? Because Poland believes that those powers will betray Polish national security and trade it for cheap ennergy and good ties with Russia. Besides that Poland is very pro EU in terms of free movement, trade agreements etc. Unfortunately liberal western media tend to show only Franco-German perspective (POLAND BAD!!11!!! EUROSCEPTIC!!!!) but they rarely talk (actually never) about Polish concerns like for example how will Poland stop France and Germany to sell its security for Russian gas if Poland agrees for them to be the head of the federal EU state?

When this was first going down, I was wondering about the possibility of Poland invading Ukraine from the West if it looked like they'd fall to Russia, simply to deny as much of Ukraine to Russia as possible, similar to how Britain tried to negotiate a similar deal with France during WWII, with the intention of giving the land back once it's all over. Basically the thought process is that Russia can attack Ukraine's troops just fine, but they can't attack Polish troops (who just so happen to also be in Ukraine also fighting Ukraine) without declaring an offensive war on Poland, invoking Article 5.

This will always be seen as an aggressive move to take territory. In example before ww2 Poland took bits and pieces of land from Countries giving up territory to another country. The only way that something like this could happen is if Ukraine and Poland both wanted to join forces ADAMANTLY. Anything short of that and it will always lead to internal rivalry and disputes. None of which either country needs. I do not live in Poland but I am Polish with friends and family that are Polish (came from Poland and still visit Poland). Some people even go far to talk about an independent Manchuria. Also, pretty much all of china's cities, population and GDP is in the central parts of China, not the Eastern parts that could get independence. Whatifalthist posted a video about china's future collapse, but I think it was farfetched and nowhere near as realistic and fact based as I would like. Would love to hear your thoughts about this. As a Pole, it's such an unrealistic scenario I dunno where to start. Even as what if. Sure our government is a anti EU integration, but people not so much. There is huge support for the EU in Polish society and the government like this won elections for the entire different reasons. I don't see this eastern western dividein the EU happening either. Poland swaying Austria, Croatia, Czechia into it's sphere of influence. Currently we barely have any sphere of influence and we are more of an outlier in EU policy and our government actions don't make us very popular among other EU members except for maybe Hungary with which we also had a falling out recently. Also we are struggling with disparity in development of eastern parts of our country (insert invest in Eastern Poland meme) and a lot of socio-economic issues. Adding new parts would be a disaster and would probably start huge wave of protest while current governing party is not so high in polls. We are extremely homogenous nation and while helping Ukrainian refugees is one thing forcing them into living here and stealing their independance would be widely unpopular. Not to mention it would absolutely alienate us among our current allies. It would basically end us. Maintaining Ukraine's sovereingty is in Poland's best interest.

A more probable scenario would be that a defeated Ukraine quickly asks for Polish annexation in order to immediately join NATO and the EU, thus saving what’s left of the country. Unfortunately, Russian propaganda twisted the facts and persuaded the Ukrainians that Poland wanted to occupy Ukraine. Without much support from the Ukrainians, we had to withdraw and only detained the Russians near Warsaw. Now it would be the same if we sent troops there. Realistically they wouldn't "reverse" anything. In an absolute worst case scenario, Poland would dissolve its border with what remains of Ukraine, and occupy at least some of it under the pretense of preventing it from falling under Russian control. In the long term, if that occupation didn't end, the Ukrainians would grow resentful of Poland, and demand an end to the occupation, which the Poles may hesitate to do since there are valuable assets within that region of Ukraine, not to mention the risk that Russia may attempt to conquer or subvert the remainder of Ukraine at a later point. Thus the alternate (not inevitable) scenario proposed.

The date for this operation was given as May 22, 2022 and there indeed have been significant movement of troops and equipment over the last few days. Not saying it WILL happen but it is possible if framed as Poland-Lithuanian attempt to secure a "portion of a 'free', semi-autonomous Ukrainian-Polish territory" in the face of "Russian aggression and expansionism". It theoretically could also allow at least a part of Ukraine to come under the "protection" of NATO without being formally admitted.

Poland couldn't invade Lithuania for life, much less substantial part of Ukraine. Also, we have trouble managing what is left of this country as it is.

bajki w celu poróżnienia Polaków i Ukraińców. Niech każdy naród ma własne państwo i sam sobie rządzi. w Polsce nie ma żadnych wizji osłabienia Ukrainy. Wolna Ukraina to wolna Polska.

This video is quintessence of "i will do a video about some region of the world" without any knowleage of realities on the ground. Everything you said here is nothing more than absolute ridicilous and you present it as wrongly as it can get. Like some alternative pepole lived in Poland or Ukraine. - Poland wagin war for resources - that is just one of most lunatic arguments i have ever heard. - invading Ukraine to keep it away from Russia is also a big nosnese. If your scenario of Russia biting half of Ukraine with the rest weakened ever happend, we would not have to invade, Ukrainians would invite us themselves or would propose some kind of federation, just like Belarusians did after the collapse of the soviet union. That is also why Ukraine proposed Poland as one of future "soverenity" garantoor. - 3-seas initiative as counterweight to EU, i have no idea why pepole think this is even a thing, EU for Poland is a tazer gun aimed at Russo-German collusion that rolled our part of europe time and again, even if we would do some kind of regional partnership, no matter how it will look, it will always be EU orieted.

I would love to see an update about what if Poland sent their full resources in support of Ukraine. No other NATO members would send support, but would passively support Poland.
