I've got a cool alternate history scenario; What if, instead of Nixon's visit to China sparking the sino-Soviet split, Nixon decides not to visit, and eventually, the Soviets and Chinese decide to form a massive Superstate, the Sino-Soviet Union. How would the USA respond to this? Would they unite with Canada in response? Would the Sino-Soviets invade the countries in the Middle East for even more power, such as Afghanistan (and this time not lose miserably), and Iran?

In his long telegram George Kennan writes that due to the huge destruction in the USSR from WWII, the idea of starting a new war in the west in 1949 is "unthinkable". I kinda agree with him. The USSR lost 20-27 million people in WWII. I don't think Stalin would dare to launch a new war with a nuclear superpower only 4 years later.

This video is incorrect. Many influential figures on both sides we're proponents for such a war, even prior to WWII's end. Churchill, De Gaulle and Patton were among them. Any proper Trotskyist among the Soviets would have favored such a course as well. The war was ultimately not pursed because neither side was confident that a near-term military victory was within reach, or if victory would be the outcome of such a war at all. There wasn't an assessment that America would simply crush the Soviets. No serious strategist or analyst believed this, though propagandists suggested it and laymen parroted it.

Considering how close we got to M.A.D. in our timeline and how almost literally world-ending that would have been, I’d understand if someone were to say that this timeline is preferable to ours.

I think I remember a point where there WERE US and Soviet tanks facing each other, all due to a checkpoint dispute. People started to panic and said this would be the spark to start WWIII. In an anticlimactic move, however, both sides eventually took turns backing down and turning their tanks around. Not as built-up as the Cuban Missile Crisis, but it was still a really close call.

I'm not sure that the USA had 200 nukes in '49.

I can’t help but think of the movie “The Day After”. In the movie the Soviet’s blockaded West Berlin and then the President in the movie announced that if the Soviet’s do not withdraw by 6am the following day it would be interpreted as an act of war. The following day it through TV broadcasts it says NATO invaded East Germany through the Helmstadt checkpoint but with many casualties. The situation it shows then massively deteriorated from there. it pretty much shows a “Ten Days to the River Rhine” scenario.

Hi. Fan here. I am from Czech Republic, and I thought it could be interesting, to develop a scenario, where Czechoslovakia didn´t surrender Sudetenland and where operation Fall Grün failed. I know it is a bit of a stretch to imagine Beneš not backing down, considering all the facts, but it would certainly make for an interesting scenario for WWII and postwar organization of Europe. Your videos are really excellent but in this one USAF General Curtis Lemay was not the one who wanted to push the Soviets, it was USA General Lucius Clay, who wanted armed supply convoys sent by land into West Berlin crossing the Soviet Sector instead of an airlift. Keep up the good work.

I think you hit the nail right on the head. The scenario presented is extremely plausible since in 1948 Warplan Dropshot was developed by the U.S. Joint Chiefs. Is there any way to watch World of Tanks War Stories on the Berlin Blockade, or is just another scenario where have uncoordinated people around the globe randomly shooting each other with no clear objective in mind?

The thought of Berlin being the flashpoint for WWIII as soon as 1949 would be like getting in a fight, beating your opponent into submission, and then deciding it'd be a good idea to smash a barstool over their head after they collapse from sustained beatings.

What about how everything would have concluded. Would Russia retain its sovereignty or would the U.S take it over.

This would depend HEAVILY on how the US nuclear program would develop if they actually went to war. In (the end of) 1949 the US had an arsenal of about 4 megatons divided amongst around 170 weapons. You might think the nukes that hit H and N did massive damage, but that was because the buildings were made out of wood and paper. European cities and Soviet cities (at least the larger ones) had brickwork constructions, and that _REALLY_ makes a huge difference when we're talking about the rather weak nukes at the time. The 2 nukes dropped on Japan had 15 and 21 kilotons, lets say 20 each for comparison. 4 megaton divided amongst 170 weapons equals about 23 kilotons per weapon. Even if we're generous and call it 25, it would not be enough to ensure total victory. However, in real life the nuclear program developed fast, and in just 6 years in 1955, the yield per weapon was over 1 megaton. And this is when we're starting to see the types of weapons that can seriously damage brickwork cities. So, could the alternative nuclear program develop faster, and get those city-killers operational earlier? If so, maybe they could halt the Soviets early, say in 51? The thing is, those early nukes really wasn't that amazing. Compared to the conventional weaponry of the time, yes, but compared to modern nukes they quite simply doesn't deal much damage to a brickwork city. And to clarify, the weapons produced this early was not purposefully small yield, like the atomic artillery that were developed later (53) and other tactical nuclear weapons. However, conventional bombing from bases in the British isles and France would still be a huge threat since the Soviet air force was still not quite back on their feet, whereas the western powers had huge number, new technology and extensive experience. Air would probably win the war for the west, but with conventional bombs, and not nukes. Sure, the nukes would help, and might do the finishing blows later on in the war, but that would still be a couple of years in the future.

What if the falcons never blew a 28-3 lead?

Honestly, it would be pretty bad, with the endless soviet troops pushing through to escape the nuclear bombs to their east. It would be absolute havoc. America would have defeated the Soviet Union - but Europe would have to deal with the endless amounts of surrendering soviet soldiers, many whom would continue to fight out of revenge or desperation, not to mention a nuclear fallout wasteland to the east.

1:51 this makes it sound like they sent like 3 planes to do this. The Berlin air lift was the biggest non military operation ever. On just 1 day before Easter 1949 they managed to deliver over 12000 tons with close to 1400 flights. That's one flight every single minute

One of the ideas about Japan after the war included a plan to divide the country and Tokyo into four occupation zones as well (one Soviet, one American, one British and one Republican Chinese). I would LOVE to see Cody do a video on that especially with how the Chinese occupation zone would be incorporated into the other zones once the Republican Chinese lose the Civil War.

My great uncle stood down the Soviets during this event. He was in one of the two divisions, and was pulled up alongside armored units along the line in the sand that would later be the site of the Berlin Wall, staring down his Soviet adversaries.

Hey Cody! It would be an interesting to see what if the Chinese Civil War never happened or how the world would be so different had Commodore Perry never broken Japan's isolation! The second scenario especially, would turn the world on its head.

Better what an alternative history scenario is World in Conflict, has its holes but its still one of the best what ifs involving the cold war. If you haven't played it, its a most play for strategy fans.
