The Vikings discovered something that could have changed the course of history and then proceeded to do nothing with it...but what if they did? Editor's Note: People have been mentioning some audio and frame rate issues. Sorry, but it appears something got screwed up during the upload to RU-vid.

The role of the Basques in the cod fisheries of medieval times seems tailor-made for this scenario.

I suspect the Indigenous people did not know they were called Skraelings or the meaning of the word. The Indigenous likely had a term in their language for the Norse that had a similar meaning.

Tumartistan as a name doesn't make sense. -stan is typically a Perso-Turkish ending for place names which doesn't make sense for an Arabo-Berber dynasty. Additionally, Arabs didn't name cities or colonies after people like Ibn Tumart, with the notable exception of Jabal Tariq, modern Gibraltar. I would either use "Gharb al-something" (Land of Something, e.g. Gharb al-Aqsa, far-away land) or arabize a local name like Alleghany ("Al-Alleghan") or Tsenacommacah ("Atsanacamah") like they did for Al-Andalus.

I kinda doubt the Islamic World would really have colonies, the only two in the position to do so were Cordoba and Mali, and Mali would only rise later and didn't really have the right naval technology, while Cordoba would fall apart and divided into warring Taifas around this time already, meaning it probably would've never even known about the Americas in the first place.

If the Europeans knew that there was a bigger land mass across the Atlantic Ocean, they would have invested more in exploring this land mass.
@creatoruser736

Not during the Middle Ages. Mainland Europe didn't have the same drive to colonize far away lands that they would have later.
@mark12strang58

It still could have been motivated a lot of Europeans in the earlier 15th century to explorer this land. The tales of the Vikings could have become legends, like the tales of Marco Polo about China.
@myohmy9000
@myohmy9000 4 года назад
Mark12 Strang the one difference between Europe and the Americas is that these places that Marco Polo visited had an abundance of silks and spices, commodities that Europeans desire. The America’s in the North Atlantic don’t have that commodity, and everything that could be perceived as very valuable is further south (gold, silver, coco, etc)

It is not hard to imagine that some king would have sent a larger expeditionary force in the earlier 14th century to check if there was more land in the South. All what they need were better ships, who were able to sail on the Atlantic.

The Vikings didn't abandon their New World settlements just because of Native resistance. They were renowned for their longships and navigation skills in the coasts of Europe, but it wasn't as good in the open seas. It was more difficult and dangerous for Vikings to cross the ocean.

A second small correction: Skrælling,- Skraeling to non-Scandinavians,- is a word still in use in Danish to this day and actually means a puny, little whithered down, famished looking non-too-impressive sort of person. A derogatory term describing someone far less imposing looking than yourself. Weakling,- yes, barbarians and wretched people,-no. You can be rich and still be a Skrælling if you are non too physically impressive as a human being yourself.

If the Norse had advanced their ship building, as you say, they might have also dominated many parts of Europe as well as founding colonies in the New World. Being first there, they would also have dominated trade, as you rightly point out, and would have become richer and even more powerful. It is something interesting to imagine how much change there could have been.

Of course there’s a lot of different interpretations of this. Mine tends to be but more Norse heavy than most, where the nords dominate the east coast forming various kingdoms from Newfoundland down to Florida and everything west of the Mississippi belongs to the natives. (Except eventually California which the English bought from the Aztecs, my little homage to Turtledove) As for Germanic polytheism, I think you underestimate the sheer size of North American. It’s pretty hard, especially for the somewhat decentralized government of the Vikings, for anyone to be persecuted over something that’s not immediately apparent like race. If pagans were being oppressed in any way I think they’d just migrate further south. In fact in my imagining, that’s precisely what they do. This also means that Aztec paganism has a chance to survive as they would be valuable trade partners with the southern pagan kingdoms who would have an interest in ensuring The Triple Alliance stayed polytheist. Lastly and perhaps I’m wrong but I don’t think the rest of the world would know about the new world immediately. It would take at least a few decades just for information to spread but on top of that, I don’t think Sweden would just announce this new land to the rest of the world. They’d probably want to keep the wealth to themselves for as long as they could. Sure stories might get out but these are silly people who believe in fairies and elves, I don’t think many others in Europe would take them all that seriously. This leads me to believe that the Vikings would have at least a century if not a few more to establish a foothold in the north. I think the rest of the world would probably colonize South America and the Caribbean. I haven’t really thought about who and where though.

I'll mention my personal favorite for all these scenarios: trade opens up between Vikings on the coast and Cahokia inland based on two invaluable products: iron knives and arrowheads from the Vikings, and TOBACCO. By the time the Little Ice Age hits, upper-class Europe (same guys who wanted spices from Asia) are going to have a giant collective nic-fit and will do anything to keep the road open, especially because by then that highly addictive drug is going to be one of the most important class markers in Latin Christian Europe and possibly further afield. Further-furthermore on another point: the knowledge that there was a land of a Really Good Drug across the Atlantic would have pushed the Islamic Golden Age seafarers into exploring out that way, and they'd have found the Canaries, Azores, and Madeira. With the better ships they'd also probably have taken a look down the African coast, and there are some places where you can easily get blown all the way to Brazil if your ship holds up. I'm guessing the main Arab settlements would be well south of Vinland. Which also means a race between Muslims and Christians to gain control of the tobacco trade.

A story where the Vikings concentrate on the area we know as Nova Scotia would be interesting. Once that area is subjugated the story would progress down interesting paths.

Politically and logistically western European countries of a 1000 years ago likely could not have sustained any presence in the New World.

The americas would never have been conquered in the same way. No guns, disease sure. With more time to acclamate, the indians would, I think, have developed faster and by the time of guns and colonization, they would be strong enough, that it wouldn't be worthwhile for settlers to journey there.

4:07 Well the skraelings weren’t so much a problem for the Vikings but more of a nuisance. It’s important to remember that no one was killed by the natives during any of the expedition. In fact the word they used to describe the natives, skraeling, essentially means “weakling”. While it’s true they didn’t have any sort of fire arms keep in mind these were strong and sturdy Danes encountering short, malnourished cave men wearing deer hides. In fact the first native they encountered was sleeping out in the middle of the woods. They thought he was an outlaw and sacrificed him to the Gods. So really it wasn’t a huge problem but just another headache to deal with.

Native people would have a better time because they'd be exposed to western technology earlier and may have developed metal working and animal husbandry via trade with vikings
@martpuk5608
@martpuk5608 4 года назад
And maybe most important, they would have become immune after epidemics. So when later colonization would happen, the Americas would remain mostly indegenous. (at least in population, Europeans might devide/conquer the land)

One strong possibility: during the Middle Ages, Nordic missionaries begin preaching to Indian Tribes of the Northeast, much as the French and English did. When the Little Ice Age shuts down the passage from Greenland to the New World, the Christianized tribes and the Vikings begin an alliance to survive/subjugate the continent. By the time the Europeans re-establish contact with the West, they find a Euro-Native Civilization that stretches across at least part of the New World. While Christian, they are not subject to entities like the Pope. So do the Europeans begin treating the Indians as equals, or do they see them as heretics?
@EdinburghFive
@EdinburghFive Год назад
There was no shutting down of the passage from Greenland to the New World during the Little Ice Age. The seas did not freeze over and stay that way. By the way, Greenland is the New World given it is part of North America.

I doubt colonizers would dominate the americas in this timeline as they didnt have much of a technological advantage over the natives. The original settlements would likely be large enough for the natives to trade with and gain advantages (smithing techniques, horses, that sorta stuff) by the time that other Euros arrive. Newfoundland would likely be the only area with an (essentially) homogenous european population, the Beothuk would probably be wiped out. The Iroquois, wabenaki, and other confederacies would likely form earlier, these larger states being harder for europeans to fight, and the euros would be beaten out of the mainland
