What is a blighted ovum/ anembryonic pregnancy? Explained by a genetic counselor 

I just had my dnc done yesterday for this reason, I’m so sad 😭 and feel like I’m mad at the world. My first pregnancy was an ectopic and now the second pregnancy was this. It makes me not want to try anymore the heartache hurts so much. I pray anyone going through this know that you are not alone. I am here with you.

On my first ultrasound there was a fetal pole measuring 6 weeks and 3 days (I should have been nearly 9 weeks) on my second ultrasound 8 days later the fetal pole had disappeared, there was only an empty sac. Bodies are so weird. I'm sorry for everyone going through this it's awful x

I’m experiencing my first blighted ovum at 21 years old. I went to my doctor’s appointment just yesterday and hearing or seeing no heartbeat broke my heart completely. They couldn’t really determine whether it really is a miscarriage because I’m too early in but this would have been my second child which by now there should be a heartbeat at 6 weeks. I scheduled another appointment in two weeks to have another ultrasound and determine whether it really is a pregnancy loss but i know in my heart that it truly is… I feel like my world is crashing down. I feel like I’ve lost another life and it’s so hard moving forward without having to know more details about the baby…. I just hope he/she didn’t go through pain and they’re happy where ever they are now…

My husband and I have been trying for a year. We finally tested positive and they scheduled us to come in right at 8 weeks. We couldn’t see anything but the sack. They said maybe I ovulated a lot later than they thought so they scheduled me for blood work 48 hours apart the next week and another ultrasound 11 days later (today). My HCG levels didn’t rise properly and my progesterone was low. My ultrasound today looked exactly like last time, empty. I took the pills as soon as I got home and now I’m sad and hurting and feeling sick. This is so awful, it really sucks. I’m glad I chose not to tell almost anyone. My sister in law is pregnant, she got pregnant one week before me. It’s going to be hard watching her go through her pregnancy while thinking about my miscarriage.

Thank you for this video. I have a better understanding of what I went through. I tried the pills and wouldn't recommend them personally because it made the process of taking everything out so much worse in that it was traumatic, drawn out, and painful.

Hi, As I was eagerly waiting for my first unborn child, I saw my wife bleeding at a 3 month pregnancy I took her to the hospital and the result was Blighted ovum Painful and stress but the video helps me Thank you.

I went through this in 2016. Was diagnosed with a blighted ovum when i was 12 weeks pregnant (sept2016) as my body failed to recognize that the pregnancy was not successful and so my body never began the process of terminating the pregnancy. Had a d&c done and then 2 months later (nov2016) i developed an endometrial polyp (thankfully Benign) so i ended up needing another d&c again in jan2017 in order to treat it due to the severe bleeding i was experiencing which caused me to develop anemia. Finally after 2 months, my periods regulated again. I ended up conceiving my rainbow baby (unplanned/surprise pregnancy) around july 30, 2017, (LMP was 7/16/2017) and had a positive pregancy test by aug25, 2017. I was given an EDD of 4/22/18 although my daughter was born on 4/18. My birthday is 4/20 and the EDD i was given for the anembryonic gestation was 4/3/17. I was shocked that both EDD was around my birthday. So i truly believe that even tho i miscarried back in 2016, that God gave me the chance to get my baby back. That anembryonic pregnancy was extremely dificult to deal with but i truly believe everything happens for a reason.

Definitely wait at least a week and get another ultrasound. If you don't have cramping or bleeding that is a good sign. It is so hard to wait, but I would want to know for sure what is going on before jumping to conclusions. I went through the same thing with my first pregnancy and my doctor wanted to wait things out the be 100% sure. I'm glad I waited

I had an ultrasound and the baby measured 6 weeks with fetal pole and yolk sack. Then my next ultrasound at 11 weeks showed an empty sack. My body reabsorbed the baby. Then the actual miscarriage happened the other day. My poor man saw the mess as it happened. We are both saddened.

My doctor thinks I have a vanishing twin according to my 7 week sono. I took the Sneakpeek gender blood test and it says I'm having a boy. Is it possible that it's the DNA from the vanishing twin? If my gestational sac was empty would it still produce DNA?

That same thing happened to me with one of my miscarriages. I ended up taking misoprostol three times to avoid a D & C and nothing happened so I had to have the medical procedure anyway.

I am 12 weeks and went for my first ultrasound which an embryo was seen with a fetal pole and my EDD was given then they said it was 4 weeks, now I'm 12 weeks it states a distorted/empty gestational sac with associated with weak decidual signs stating DD as a retained product of conception, I find it hard to believe that because after my first miscarriage, I had to do a D&C to hat the products out which I went back for a scan and everything was free. I'm so confused right now.😭😭😭😭

Hi my wife had this in 9 weeks and 4 days and the doctor recommend us for D&c so went straight away with D&c but after a few days my wife started complaining a pain in the abdomen area so went for checkup again turns out the there are still things visible while taking ultrasound ( I don’t know what they called it) seems the d&c was not done as the way it should be . So the gynaecologist recommended another d&c but my wife wasn’t ready for it ( too much pain) so we opted for drugs ( misoprostol etc) .Now one week has passed but still no sign of bleeding. I need your help. What are my options?

My wife tested pregnant 11/15. Was feeling bad, took a Covid test on 11/18 and was positive for Covid. First ultrasound was 12/20. Blighted ovum. We were told "couldn't possibly have been Covid, Covid doesn't do that." It was a very mild case, but still...I can't help but to think it was due to that that this happened.

I just had an ultrasound last week and we saw nothing in the sac abdominally but we did see an embryo with what looked like a heartbeat vaginally. It was very hard to locate, but a CRL measurement was taken… I’m so worried. Can you see something in the Gestational sac when you have a blighted ovum? Can uterine vasculature mimic an embryo with a beating heart? Am I worrying too much?

I have it yesterday, i get bleed n im pregnant for 7 weeks but when i bleed n they ultrasound they never see any fetus or baby inside it just a house of baby or blighted ovum its very sad and very scary to get pregnant again 💔.

My doctor is telling me my twin sacs are both blighted ovums and wants to schedule me for a D&C this week. I told him that I want to wait another week or 2!! I’m tired of the looks from his office. It’s my body and my choice . I’m so hesitant because they told me the same thing about my daughter who is 14 months old now. She was an empty sac , then a yolk sac and no fetal pole. Then finally a baby with a heartbeat. But they told me for weeks she was a non viable pregnancy. So I’d rather wait as I’ve had zero spotting or pain.

I got a positive pregnancy test on 8/28/22 on 8/29/22 I had some spotting but then I started to spot more I bled the most on Monday and Tuesday today 9/1/22 I went to the dr the pregnancy test was negative and I had an ultrasound the dr said something about she can see the implantation lining. I'm sure it's a chemical pregnancy. I go next Wednesday 9/7/22 to get the Transvaginal ultrasound to get a better look. I would of been 5 weeks

In 1994 at 30yrs, I had ultrasound. At first they said it's triplets! Almost immediately she said it's 1 embryo and 2 blighted ovums. All I understood was 1 baby. I had alot of spotting in the beginning but gave premature birth to a baby girl. Why/how did this happen?

I was pregnant for 3 months, throwing up constantly and ravenous. Had all the same symptoms as I had with my last 2 successful pregnancies. Started bleeding, had an ultrasound, and dr said it was a blighted ovum. I was in shock because I had morning sickness about 10 times a day vomiting. Meanwhile, there wasn’t even a baby there. 🤦‍♀️

What is the best treatment approach for anembryonic pregnancy?

I recently had an ultrasound according to which I was 5w + 6days, where a GS and Yolk Sac were clearly seen, as well as a fetal pole measuring 2.3 mm (however no heartbeat was seen). My HCG levels at that time were over 11.000 so the doctor said that definitely a heartbeat should be seen at that point and that I would probably miscarriage. Could this be a blighted ovum even if fetal pole and yolk sac were present? I’m supposed to have a new ultrasound next week but I’m very anxious.

At 11 weeks there was a yolk sac and my uterus was enlarged, I had a d&c nothing more was explained it was called a missed miscarriage. I'm assuming it was a blighted ovum

Hi everyone, I need help. Yesterday I went to OBG. As per my last menstrual date, I must be 7 weeks 5 days pregnant. She did first ultrasound and said you’re 5 weeks 5 days pregnant with an empty gestational sac. I am literally devastated. Feeling broken. She has called me again next just to confirm after another round of ultrasound. I wanted this baby. I am crying endlessly. The doctors are so mean and rude. They don’t even respond to your queries properly. They are doctors, not we. May be our questions sound silly to them but they are serious to us. Please pray next week everything will go fine.

Today marks week 8, and our first ultrasound was week 6. Both seem to indicate an empty sac, but I continue to have pregnancy symptoms. I can't bring myself to start medication or DnC. This was supposed to be my first kid. We had all gotten prepared and excited only to learn it was all for nothing. I feel hopeless.

What about when you are doing IVF and continuously get a blighted ovum or chemical pregnancy then what? It’s extremely frustrating especially when you’re using PGT tested high-grade embryos, but yet this happens over and over again.

Had an ultrasound today (I should be 10 weeks). The only thing visible was the gestational sac. They couldn't give me an official diagnoses and I'm supposed to call tomorrow but I'm pretty positive I'll be diagnosed with anembryonic pregnancy. If so this will be my 3rd loss. Thank you! I just found your channel just when I needed to. A blighted ovum identified on Tuesday. Should be 8 weeks from my first round of IVF and sac is tiny, only a 1 week sac and empty. I'm being monitored right now and will go through options after my next scan next week. This is the official milestone of 3 miscarriages in a row. Not an achievement any if us want to get to. It's so confusing, we had a perfect 5 day embryo transferred. The embryologist gave it the highest grade. Everything was perfect and this still happens. You just feel so cheated.

So… we are using a Gestational Carrier thru IVF due to my wifes cervical cancer treatment. And we transferred 1 embryo, and it somehow turned into a twin pregnancy with our fetus looking healthy and the empty sac next to it. Went to an ultrasound there was no baby in the sac.. The MVA process was dine and it was very painful 😢😢 i would like to try again but im afraid it might happen again😢😢

I should be 6+3, but GS size is 0,69cm so ab 5+1. no yok sac or baby. I’ve had no bleeding. I’ve taken blood test but haven’t got my results. Is it still hope? My period was 12.july, fertile 25.july, light positive 6.aug and dark positive 15.aug. Very positive clearblue rapid test today 27.aug

I went through this a few years ago found out I was pregnant on Halloween I proceeded to have sex and shortly after I started bleeding went to the er they confirmed that I was pregnant but the sac was empty I was depressed and devastated not understanding why had to get D&C and it made me feel worse unfortunately I was later told I wasn’t gonna be able to have kids and ended up having a hysterectomy yrs later because I just could get pregnant or if I did get pregnant I would have a miscarriage I had 3 miscarriages and gave up 😢

Currently a 50/50 my Dr said for me. My gestational sac is 6weeks 6days it was empty. My hcg was doubling a week ago(20,000-~40,000), but I have to check again this week. I get the results on Monday for hcg. If basically doubling then I have to wait 2 weeks to have a second ultrasound. 😵‍💫 My Dr thinks I may just be early due to my irregular periods, but we'll see.
