I’m glad to see 44 mag, but what about 45 colt, 350 legend 450 bushmaster, .458 socom or .50 beowulf. There should definitely be a part 3. Love these vids

This video is old. Those cartridges either didn't exist, weren't as popular as they are now, or wouldnt perform any different than similar calibers already shown.

Maybe the 180 grain soft point in .350, I would suspect the extreme tip (a ballistic tip) wouldn't. But all the deer I've shot with the extreme tip either fell in their tracks or didn't go further than about 20 yards.

Great video. I appreciate the 30-06 making an appearance because I had a feeling it would be able to tag the target with a heavier projectile. The 30-06 is so versatile and it's my favorite caliber :)

I got a Winchester Model 94 in 30 30. It’s my brush gun, and I love it. This video just solidified the round’s abilities despite the tumble/disintegration, it hit a big chunk of brush, most bullets would do the same.

I keep coming back to this series of brush gun videos over the years because of all the downright useful, pragmatic and timeless information presented. Thank you! BTW, I think a 600 grain slug tickin' along at 1,100 ft per second is packing kinetic energy in the neighborhood of 1,600 ft-lbs. WOW! I'm thinking elephant gun.

As far as I am personally concerned, this video and Part 1 provide some of the most actually useful tests and information in the RU-vid shooting video world. I appreciate your picture-in-picture closeup, video and audio quality, your efforts to make your tests fair and realistic, and mostly your intelligent, but down-to-earth narration. A lot of these RU-vid guys provide good information, but listening to them talk is an absolute beatdown. I know this video is almost five years old, but thanks for posting it.

Where I live we do a lot of muzzle loader hunting in the brush. It would be interesting to see how they react. Traditional, vs Inline vs flintlock or some more black powder rifle testing in general. Just a thought I really enjoy watching yalls videos,

Thank you...I learned to hunt in Montana where you have 300+ yards to contend with to hit a target and am now learning to hunt a completely different style in thick briars of FL/GA swamps at 50 yards....typically I run 180 gr with my 300win mag, but this helped me understand the need to move to a flat tip with 220 gr. Greatly appreciate the video

id like to see a 180 grain 357 magnum from a carbine/rifle. I know its not the most powerful but in some states alot of people hunt with them.

most people dont realize that due to advances in Propellant technology the modern .357 magnum delivers similar foot pounds of energy on target as a .44 magnum from the 70's main reason i want a L5 Desert Eagle in .357 also so i dont have to deal with cylinder gap and lost preasure...

@@happyjohn354 .357 is another highly underrated caliber. It's an excellent man-stopper in a pistol and a good hunting round in a rifle. A lever-action .357 wouldn't be a bad choice for home defense, either.

I love my Marlin 30-30. I've had mine since I bought it used in 1997. I've killed deer in thickets and out to 200yds on a powerline. To me you can't go wrong with a 30-30.

I know alot of people hate on 30-30 but I love mine as well and it don't get no better in my opinion, plenty of knock down power and it don't kill your shoulder either, I mean I also love my 45-70 but it is just hard to beat a good marlin 336 30-30.

@@eanonmcmickle2162 I shot a deer with a Hornady .44mag 300gr bullet at 35-40yrd and dropped it in its tracks. When I went to skin it, the bullet and a large chunk of shoulder bone from the opposite side shoulder, literately fell out onto the ground. It was just under the skin on the back side of the deer. I was amazed at the size of bone fragment that fell out. Needless to say that gun (Marlin model 1894 Cowboy Limited) has been my trusted deer gun for hunting in the hills of Arkansas for decades. No issues with brush with this gun and we've got plenty of brush. The .44mag has always done what I needed it to do.

Got a duplicate of that M77, most calibers with that stock had plastic inlay pieces in colors - the wood makes it nicer. It feels like more gun than you need for the cartridge, can't imagine the overkill of the same basic type in .22LR as used in the first Brush Gun video. (Yeah, target ones are even heavier for .22's - different purpose)

Yeah, in Stainless with that stock it caught my eye - the wood panels make it. When I found out it matched the Caliber popular & cheap at the time (had picked up SKS/MAK90) I just had to have it. Didn't think I'd come across another without a search, and that expanded the 7.62x39 shooting to include reloading for it.

30 30, 35, 444, and 7.62x39 are the most popular in my area. It is something to see a boar or large buck that close, what a rush!

GREAT follow up on the first video! Honestly I'm not surprised that the 7.62x39 soft point deflected. As for the 30-30, that was a thick green branch so no wonder! Still a 30-30 fan and a 7.62x39mm fan. The AK round was designed for humans not branches-I don't feel terrible for saying the truth. ;-)

THANK YOU SO MUCH for this video. I have a 12g coachgun, and Im dreaming of getting a .44mag marlin lever action asap. Your first video on this topic really opened my eyes to the effects of brush on bullets. I live in an area of Europe that has tons of forest by me, and not just amazingly delicious looking game in it, but it has a very real chance of my back yard and surrounding area becoming my hideout/ survival spot should SHTF. Since I see my skill sets as being little more than Irregular militia/partisan fighter with very little chance of acquiring modern "military style" hardware without raising some serious eyebrows I have been looking into deer gear for potential resistance purposes. I think I'll be choosing the 12g slugs for hunting, the .44mag for skirmishing/ambushing and the buckshot for patrolling. Thank you so much for your shining example of how to be an ethical hunter, and an effective protector of family, home and "fatherland"

Unless you plan on getting a 44mag revolver as well I'd go with a 30-30 or 45-70 lever gun just for the extra range, power, and availability imo. 44mag is great tho especially if you have a pistol with it

I absolutely love my 30-30!! It's really probably because it's the 1st gun ever bought for me when I was 12. And where I hunt in Missouri I haven't felt the need for anything else. I have only missed one deer with my 30-30 ever! And it's all due to the same results in this video. Where I'm hunting now with "Primitive" weapons I have a 45-70 break-action. I use it all year now because I don't have access to where I used to hunt and it's REALLY thick.

Good subject! In addition to the caliber, I believe part of the definition to be considered a brush gun needs to be that the gun itself is easy to maneuver in the thick. Basically short and handy. I am using a 16" 450 Bushmaster AR for this. I would like to see 450 Bush in the mix - I am sure the results would be no surprise.

I’ve been watching these brush gun videos all night and this guys is by far the most accurate in terms of how one of these situations of brush hunting would go everyone else fixed the “brush” to a stationary plane so it had no give. Best brush gun videos by far.

Good video. Thanks. I'm definitely going for the rossi model 92 16 inch barrel in 44 mag. I think the little Henry single shot in 45 70 would be excellent too. Its light, short, and handles a lot like the old Winchester lever. I like light and quick handling rifles. They've got some recoil but you pack a gun more than you shoot it and a gun is no good if it's not in your hands.

The 30-06 has honestly gotta be one of the most versatile rounds ever made. When i was a kid my dad asked me what kind of deer rifle i wanted and he bought me a savage 110 in 30-06. It's got great long range abilities and the versatility in loads just make it adaptable for almost anything.

To me it looks like the 30/30 is best all around brush gun. Ammo available almost everywhere in my part of Georgia. Easy on the shoulders. It can cut through a tree branch and still go towards target. Nice video keep them coming.

My friend, if your time and resources allow, test the 190 grain Buffalo Bore 30-30 round through the brush. It is a heavy for caliber bullet and is fabulous fabulous fabulous in durability, fps, and raw energy. Never again will the 30-30 be snubbed. Much appreciation for your fabulous video.

@The American Patriot If it's a lead bullet it will never wear out a barrel. Throat erosion is what you have to be concerned with, not barrel wear!

Eric, @ the 7.62×39 segment; The beauty of having that round, In lever action, is That 2nd ( and if you are a bad shot, 3rd) almost semi- automatic shot to follow up. Again, if necessary! I've seen ground squirrels turned inside-out with V-max bullets in that calibre @ 300-ish yards! (Approximately 300 meters)

First started deer hunting in nothern Michigan with a 870 wing master with slugs...... At 18 my uncle let me borrow his old Winchester 351. Fell in love with that gun down in the swamps. Bought one myself and was my go to when hunting in thick cover. Later on in life i bought a 35 Remington and now onw 2...…..Nothing gets away from these weapons.

I prefer 30-30 to 7.62x39, simply because I'm not an AK fan, and I love lever guns. I know it's a very popular caliber, and I'm glad your caliber was featured. I think the 40-series of calibers would be one of my favorites, as in 44 Magnum, 45-70, and I really want to get a 444 Marlin.

Great job Eric. I just bought a Marlin 44 mag for pig work here in Oz. Tried out 240g Sellier Baggot ammo at the range with some buddies and we sited iin the iron sites with rear ghost ring. grouped fine at 50 yrards so we went for the steel chicken at 200 yards. I had three loads left. Put one to the right but correct height. so, we moved onto the hanging steel pig at 330 yards. I used my internal ballistic calculator which reckoned 4 pig heights at that distance. Put one projectile in the air and 'gong' and swing went the pig. I left it at one for one and walked away with my new rifle. Love it.

I know this is late to the party but thought I would comment for future viewers. Great channel, lots of information. For this video, I think folks should concentrate on the- "this is not very scientific" comment. I'm a firm believer in the camp that bullets move when they hit things. The farther that hit is from the terminal, the more the deviation, be it keyhole or whatever. Years ago, I repeatedly missed a deer 70 yards from me. The third shot I just barely got a piece of hair off it. Half hour later I hit a porcupine at the same distance. I was in a creek bed shooting into a field. Very light branches in front of me. I didn't see them in the scope. I hit three different small branches five yards from the muzzle, and clear path to target. Firearm- 30-30 win, 170 grain RN. All of the branches were under 3/16" diameter. Moved impact 20 inches or so at that distance. So for me, there are no "brush guns", just ballistics.

And then there is the "King of the Deer and South Eastern Hog Thumpers" the .35 Remington. What gets thumped with the .35 Remington tends to stay thumped. And by the way, I own and hunt with .250-3000 Savage (NOT much of a brush gun but it will drop a deer at 150 to 200+ yards as long as the shooter does his or her part and he or she is shooting over pretty much open terrain), .308 Winchester, .30-30 Winchester, .444 Marlin, and 12gauge chambered long guns. Why the .35 Remington is so often overlooked by deer and hog hunters in brushy areas will remain a mystery to me. Great video as usual! Keep 'em comin'!

I'm not one to tell anybody how they have to customize their guns, but I sure as hell wouldn't do it to a Martini-Henry if I had one. To each their own though. Everyone likes a little different spice, and if it's someone's dream to have a suppressed Martini I wouldn't stop em. They'd enjoy the hell out of it and that's what it's all about.

I’m curious how many rounds went straight through without hitting anything what if you did a more consistent test where you set up three 4x8 sheets of plywood at 30yd, 40yd, and 50yds in line with each other. This would show you how well a round maintains stability as it goes through heavy brush.

Not necessarily. For example, a FMJ bullet from say a Mosin Nagant could go straight through all of the plywood , while brush may cause it to veer due to the random placement and angles of the brush. Good idea though.

The 30.06 round is also loved by game hunters in Alaska. It hits with enough force to take down a moose, literally. Side note, the same round was fired by two different rifles during WWII, the M1 Garand, as well as the B.A.R., and we all know the result of that, great punch through power when it comes to brush/vegetation. Also, thank you for the 30-30 demonstration.

Thanks for the follow up. As you probably know you can reload your 30-30 cartridges with hard cast lead gas checked bullets of 180 grains and up to 200 grains and still have impressive velocities. And of course the 30-30 has taken all big game in North America-again and again and again! In the 1930s Col. Wesson took a Grizzly at 100 yards with his Smith and Wesson pistol in .357! 30-30 and .357 are not to be ignored! And .357 out of a rifle with good sights is a good perimeter gun out past 500 yards! Not sure I agree with everything you said, 30-30 to me is still the best brush gun ammo, but I am biased a little, so you made some really good points. I hunt deer in Wyoming County PA and my favorite rifle is the Ruger 44 Lever Action with a soft point. It is a light rifle with a short throw lever. I carry a 7.5’’ Redhawks as my companion to the model 96 lever gun.

Brad Yelich That is true. Not triggered, just seems that any bullet would veer if it hit something that thick. If it were shooting through bushes that's one test, but shooting thru branches is another. It was the only one to hit something that large so kinda got jipped.

There's a VERY good reason the 30-06 and it's somewhat smaller brother the .308 have proven themselves over and over in combat and hunting aplications around the globe for many decades.

I have a Remington 7400 in 30-06, produced the same time as that Model Four in the video, except the stock on the 7400 is etched. Pretty much the only difference. And it’s a fantastic gun. Any bad reviews are mostly because people don’t know how to care for them. They like to be dry and clean. As long as it’s not oiled heavily it’ll be fine. It also really likes Remington Core Lokts so I tell anyone interested in this particular firearm to buy the Remington ammo. But it’s hard to beat a 30-06. It’s just a good round. And everyone who likes to point out all the fancy magnum rounds, I tell them to remember that the Boone and Crocket record brown bear was shot and killed with a 30-06. It’ll get the job done if you do your part. Enough said.

iDrive4fun93: Couldn’t agree more with you sir.....the hot magnum rounds are all the hype these days but someone who owns a .300 win mag, 7mm rem mag, .338 win mag, .375 h&h, etc probably only shoots that rifle maybe a handful of times a year at most, not to mention ammo is too damn expensive. The .30-06 can handle any large and dangerous North American game although I’m sure there are some who will disagree lol, and also happens to be the best all around hunting caliber ever in my opinion...definitely powerful enough and plenty versatile with a wide range of bullet weights for different game/applications, and being cost effective to shoot & practice with. The only time I can see some of those magnum calibers even being a viable option is for guys hunting stone sheep & mountain goats out west in the Rockies where they may have to make a 500-800yd shot and really need to reach out there, although shooting at that distance defeats the purpose of hunting for me anyways. 30-06 is king!

I agree the 30-06 is a great round and with the right grain bullet it can be very versatile. However, I will also say, that in my limited experience with that round, I found that at short distances, say 50yrds or less, it is so fast that the round can easily go through the deer with out delivering enough of its energy to drop the deer in its tracks. Sooo...after a few times of having to track down my game, I decided to use a different round for my application. I mostly hunt in the hills and hollers of Arkansas where there is most often thick brush and limited distance shooting (you can't see through the side of the mountain). I found that my Marlin model 1894 Cowboy Limited in .44cal is perfect. It has dropped every deer I've shot right in their tracks and I've not had any issues with brush deflection. The best part for me is not having to tramp around in the woods up and down the hills following blood trails. I will admit, I mainly use the Hornady 300gr XTPs but I've also used the Hornady 225gr FTX LeverEvolution rounds with great results. Don't get me wrong, when I hunt in Oklahoma the 30-06 is a better choice of round. Longer distance, less brush and great energy on target. Although I feel it's a toss up between the 30-06 and my 270 short mag for those longer shots.

Francis E. Sell wrote a book entitled, “Advanced Deer Hunting” which included shooting through both brush and Alders. Through brush, as I recall, the results were the same as this test with the exception of the .30-30 which did well in brush. Shooting through Alders the fast deer calibers such as .270 & 30-06 did poorly while the projectiles traveling between ~ 2100 and 2500 fps penetrated and straight lined though both brush and alders. The fast rounds broke up while the slow (45-70) ricocheted badly. There was three differences however in Mr. Sell’s test protocol. They were that the targets were more visible than in this test, the targets were closer than 15 yards on the other side of the brush, and more than 3 rounds were fired per cartridge. Man! Thar 600 grain projectile you fired REALLY knocked that target around!!

Perhaps a .375 H&H or heck, I've seen your gun closet. Pick one!! A heavy fast one, and then a heavier, faster one. If your shoulder can endure... . LOL
