debstar2005 Hi Deb, I was wondering if I could get in contact with you to ask a bit more about building surveying. I’m a 23 year old architecture graduate from Essex trying to decide if I want to move into this field and would love to get the perspective of another black female.

I've been interested in changing career to become a building surveyor. I've heard doing an RICS accredited conversion course is a good route following by joining a company do the APC training. Do you have any advice for someone looking for a career change into building surveying at age 31?

Hey, thanks for the message and thank you for watching. We know a few surveyors who started their career with a RICS accredited conversion course and it seemed to work well for them. We'd be happy to give you some informal advice on the role and career options, you can also find further information on the RICS website. We also know quite a few surveyors who changed careers later on in life (even 40s/50s) to become a surveyor and really enjoy it. Feel free to message us through the website.

Think about doing BS for my masters. I really like the design aspect. Can someone please explain the design aspect to me

Hi there, thank you for the message and interest in the profession. So the design element will depend on the company and type of work. Many Building Surveyors will not get involved much with design work, but some do (including us). The design role would be similar to an Architect or Architectural Technologist and involve drawing work (usually on CAD software), dealing with local authorities and statutory bodies, producing detailed designs and specifications and tender packages to obtain competitive prices from contractors for the works. Services can range from just design & drawing services to complete project services from start to finish. Thank you for watching and wish you all the best with your masters (whatever you choose!) But really can't recommend Building Surveying enough as a career choice.

Hi Iam currently studying 3 A levels and inspired about the building surveying career. Can I ask for some advice for what specific qualifications I will need to reach my goal.

Hi there, thank you for the question. There are a few different paths to becoming an RICS qualified Chartered Building Surveyor. The quickest route from A-Levels would be to undertake an RICS Accredited degree in Building Surveying. We would suggest speaking with the RICS directly to seek further advice, along with your own desktop research to the different Universities that can provide this. Once you have completed your degree you will need to undergo the 'APC' pathway (Assessment of Professional Competence) whereby you will undergo a structured training programme for a minimum of 2 years before preparing submissions to the RICS with your experience record and undertaking a final examination interview with a panel of RICS Assessors. Completing and passing this process will result in your qualified status and enable you to use the 'MRICS' letters after your name. For further information please visit and speak to the RICS at www.rics.org/uk/. Hope this helps. The Quatrefoils Team.

Graduate - £20,000 - £25,000 depending on the area, some areas go as low as £18,000 for graduates. Chartered building surveyors can earn between £35,000 - £50,000 yet again depending on the area / company / experience. Director level you could earn up to £100,000 depending on your projects etc, so it's all speculation until you know what bracket and experience level you fit in to.

Residential- 30-60k Commercial sector- 40-95k Consultant/Director/Partner- 100+k Depends if you like to soecialise in high profile and high risk commercial projects doing TDD projects, valuations, insurance reports, project management. Or alternatively, you can earn a very comfirtable wage dealing with residential management, surveys, building control, party walls work, rights of light/neighbourly dispute consulting such as easements, advising on property law/lease and tenancy agreements. It is the most diverse, secure and has a higher earning potential than other surveying professions such as Land/ Quantity/ Development

@@sergeyw8864 Quantity Surveying is by far the highest paid of all Surveying profession, Building Surveying would be the lowest paid out of the main Surveying groups such as Quantity and Commercial Real Estate Surveying

Do they measure the external and internal of home or office. Do they look at the Quality of materials . And the final product is complete . Do they check ( survey it

Thank you for your question. Depending on the scope of their appointment and skillset - yes, a building surveyor could provide measured surveys and check and monitor quality of materials and workmanship. Thanks for watching! Quatrefoils Team

Most of the above task would be intially undertaken by a QS rather than a building surveyor but a BS could obviously profrom the same tasks as a QS
