Absolutely ridiculous for people to steal the remains of the deceased! It was very unfortunate for the family members of the deceased to have to suffer such losses. Great content as usual Kari! Thanks for providing wonderful videos that contain great information! Keep on keeping on!
An old Caribbean saying, "the more I live, it's the more I learn". Never heard of such device. Thanks Kari, another great one. Trusting you n family are well, especially the young ladies. New house nearly sorted? Love from the UK 🇬🇧 ❤🌹
Absolutely amazing! Such crazy things that happened through the years. Just when we thought we have heard it all...we have coffin collars. But being in the medical field...we would probably be digging up graves too...desperate to learn more.
It was a huge issue in Scotland because the University of Edinburgh medical school was the leading European authority in anatomy and acquiring bodies was essential. Burke and Hare are famous pair who took it one step further and killed at least 16 people to get their bodies to sell. Walking through Edinburgh you can see the place where Burke was hanged after his partner turned King’s evidence against him . This led to lots of grave cages and coffin collars etc
Poor people. Although this sort of thing is most likely going on in other parts of the world, sadly. Thank you for telling us a bit more about Scottish history!
Found a probate record in 1924 (Iowa) with a claim from the funeral home which includes fees for the following: casket, embalming, hearse, opening grave, lining grave and device ($1.50), collar (.50), and telegrams. I searched online for funeral collar and your video came up. Thanks Kari! Great video as always. Not sure what the "device" is. I am familiar with grave torpedos and the like in the 19th century, some patents have been filed which are fascinating.
Wow I thought I heard it all but I never heard of that before.. thank you very much for your videos you are the best Kari 👋...I just got horrible news this morning my uncle called me and said that his daughter passed away last night she was my first cousin she had battled drug addiction for years and she hanged herself last night so sad 😢 beyond words when I got up this morning I just had a feeling that something was wrong and then he called me.
Amazing what used to happen in Scotland and England isn't it Kari, that's why I said to you a long time ago that you should come over to Scotland and book a tour of the necropolis behind the Glasgow royal hospital on wishart street, I'm not 100% sure if you would need to book a tour of the Glasgow cathedral too, but it's such a beautiful place and the stained glass windows are absolutely stunning too, there's probably quite a few different places you would love to see in Scotland, but I don't know what the travel situations are at the moment, because I've not long read that Arkansas hospital has only 8 ICU beds just now because of the new variant of covid, from Jill in Glasgow x
I was fascinated by your comment. The Cathedral is now open with advance booking, however there is a virtual tour noted on the site. I will be making time for a virtual visit in the near future. Thank you for bringing this to my attention.
@@amecocoa3829 I only know about having to book a tour for both the cathedral and the necropolis because I live about 5 minutes from both places, I'm glad that you were fascinated by my comment though, there are also people who died from the black plague directly behind the old building of the Glasgow royal infirmary hospital, and that is right beside the cathedral, the Glasgow royal infirmary hospital the old section of it is fascinating itself, because when it first opened many many years ago it started off with just the central block and as time went on the surgical and medical blocks were added, you can actually see it online, it would be such a beautiful building again if it was sandblasted 🙂
Wow!🤔 First time I have heard of this! You come up with the coolest stuff! I’m playing catch up on the past couple of months of your videos. Actually I kinda like being able to see more than one at a time.😊 Keep up the great info! Be safe!😎👍🏼✌🏼🦋
@Dale Thompson. You're not alone!! I became interested in learning about grave robbing in my teens, simply because I couldn't believe one could be unearthed just for teeth w/crowns & silver fillings etc. I'm surprised I didn't runs across "Coffin colar" in anything I studied. Lol 👍🏻 Thanks Kari, learned something new today.😀
I learn something new every day. Sounds like a good idea, but it looked too be made from wood, looks like it would be easy too get loose. As for myself, I don't want too be locked down until I rot .🤯🤯
Imagine being afraid of your body being stolen but also being buried alive. The 1800's were an unhappy time. No wonder no one smiled in the photos of the time!
Just had a thought...would it be relatives that wouldn't need the money by selling their loved ones bodies who would have this done, seems like adding "insult to injury" as the saying goes, who thought if this I wonder, what would be an alternative...errmmmm...
If grave robbers were stealing bodies for medical schools, it seems to me that all they'd have to do to get around this device was to - um... - remove the head from the torso. It would be dissected after all, right?
A rhyme from about 1828: Burke’s the butcher, Hare’s the thief, Knox the man who buys the beef. Burke and Hare, they were a pair! Killed a wife and didn’t care.
Such a disgrace that for money you dig up a person that is loved not giving a thought how their love one dug up after they thought now the body can rest .
Interesting. I have a somewhat trivial question, don't know why I thought of this but I did. Are bodies placed in crypts feet first or head first? See, I told you it was trivial!
This is something I've never learned, even in mortuary college. I've heard about grave robbing which seems bizarre, but things were quite different 200 years ago. Sadly folks did whatever they could to survive.
I doubt very much those coffin collars worked in the manner in which they were advertised . Even Frankenstein was affectionately called the " Little Zipper Neck" by his Girlfriend. Mel Brooks would never run out of material if he watched this channel.
Kari are you okay?you look so tired and like you have alot on your mind?I know you have a great family and a great support system but if you ever need to chat outside of your circle or just someone to listen or vent to please message me. Take care of yourself.
I'm guessing with the coffin collar, there are a bunch of headless corpses out there.😲 Ewww.😱 Horrible to think of but, look at the measures H. H. Holmes (serial killer) took to protect HIS remains after he was exucuted (hanged)! He was the first killer to coin the term "Serial Killer". He was actually also born in the state I now reside (that was a shock)-NH!😳 After all the corpses he stole, dissected or sold to colleges his last request before being hanged was to have his coffin go double the depth normal with him on the bottom (of course), & empty casket on top ALL encased in concrete! Saw the documentary about it. Fascinating stuff. Well if your kinda morbid like me!😂 My apologies to anyone I might have upset. 💖 🤘
Yes.👍 Very true. My sister wants to donate her enrire corpse. She wanted to do it at "The Body Farm" (they study forensics & varies times & decomp situations) but there is a HUGE waiting list!😳 I think it MAY be Penn State College is where it's at but not 100% on that. Kari with all the super nifty neato stuuf they have with computer models & realistic disection (not on a person) do you think this will fall by the wayside? Just curious. Thanks & stay safe! Or as safe as you can.🙄 These times... 💖 🤘
