A bistoury knife is an instrument that some embalmers use. What makes it different than a scalpel? Kari the Mortician gives some quick info.

Kari, I thought I'd seen every kind of blade, from ophthalmic diamond blades to Beaver Blades for microsurgery, shielded blades used for arthroscopic surgery, drill bits, burrs, countersinks, and #10, #11, and #15 scalpel blades for various specialties.....I've never heard or seen a Bistoury Knife/Blade before! Now I've seen one, thanks to you! I'm VERY curious about the metal composition of that blade, because reuseable blades require carbon steel. We use disposable stainless blades that remain very sharp. In fact, a separate blade is used for skin incisions, and a different blade for deeper work/ cuts. Exposure to body fluids comprised of salty, acidic, or enzyme based fluids would react with any metal that oxidizes easily. Instruments are wiped with a gauze sponge dipped in distilled water during use, so the metals used are very durable and non reactive. Fascinating - a Bistoury Knife. I learned something new today!! Thank you!

A #12 blade is closest to The blade shown, however, a 12 doesn’t have all the length. #12 blade is generally used for tonsillectomy surgeries.

@@ShoreShihTzuNurs, Ah, yes.....a tonsillectomy blade! The difference, however, is the tip of a #12 points DOWN, towards the floor, (the direction it's used) and judging by the handle of the bistoury knife, the tip of the blade points towards the ceiling, or UP! The bistoury blade is quite long, too, compared to the arsenal used in the OR today.

Well..we learn something new every day😊. Great shade of nail varnish by the way😊. Very flamboyant use of the pinkie finger whilst displaying the knife! Depending on value (wouldn't want to devalue it by removing the rust) it might make a quick and easy restoration project. Baking powder and white vinegar a 20 minute bath goodbye rust. Interested to see if anyone gets in touch to say "Hi I use one."

I've seen this type blade before but never knew it had a name. It was that old blade which was always cleaned & shoved to the back of the tray. I've always relied upon the commonly used scalpel handle & disposable blades. I wouldn't know how to sharpen a blade like that. Always something new to learn here.

Looked it up,the Bistoury knife can have a pointed or blunt point on it ... for Embalming or Surgery ... cutting in upward/downward directions ... Picking whatever out from the body then cut ... ⚔️🗡️⚔️

It's not the 'client' that causes issues - a tough case us just that and a good pro can always overcome. Problems are with the family members, sometimes for good reason: they're trying to deal with the most difficult times in their lives and the funeral pros understand that and do their best to guide them through the difficult time. (Some people are just born jerks and display that same trait when they're buying a car, new stove, you name it. I do salute anyone on the funeral business that does it right for they are masters of the art of patience, understanding and havexa *very* thick skin... God love "em because the public they do their level best to serve with compassion ethics and understanding have *no idea* what it's really like...

When I was a young adult I always wanted to become a mortician I always thought that was like one of the most respectable jobs there was you're giving that deceased person their last hurray to their family to the life they had so it just seems like one of the most respectable jobs out there my question is I was thinking about it when I was watching one of your videos do you ever find yourself like talking to the deceased as your embalming them I just to me thinking about it it's like any other job you'd be talking to your coworkers do you find yourself doing that ever with a corpse I just think that would be common so just wondering
