This video shows what a Faucet Cartridge looks like, and how it works. I show how to replace a Cartridge on a Price Pfister bathroom faucet from the Pasadena collection. Some other brands use cartridges, and replacement is similar. The cartridge is free via Pfisters lifetime warranty. Pfister has a lifetime warranty, and replaced my handle and cartridge free of charge when it started to malfunction.
If you need a cartridge sooner, Amazon carries it:
Cold water cartridge: amzn.to/2jTyOmJ
Hot water cartridge: amzn.to/2jVvzLd
Brass retainer nut: amzn.to/2AW1e9S

Super helpful! Thanks, Thrifty Tani! I discovered, once I saw how to get the handle off by unscrewing the base (thanks to your video), that the nut holding the valve in place on top had simply worked loose. By tightening this, the valve stopped leaking. I didn't discover this until after disconnecting things under the sink, which was not necessary in my case--a note to help any future visitors. Thanks again. Regarding free replacement, if you are not the original purchaser (I bought the home from the original owner) the warranty isn't valid--not a big deal, since the valve is a pretty cheap fix.

Thank you--that worked great, especially since I have that exact same faucet. I'll just mention for others that when I pulled the cartridge out, it didn't all come out at once. There was a piece of plastic that stuck in the bottom, which I had to pull out with pliers before I could put the new cartridge in. That happened on both my hot and cold, so it's probably pretty common.

Thank you for this video, including the 800 number. My kitchen faucet needed more than just the cartridges, as even the side sprayer was leaking, and the center goose neck. (Sonterra model). The total of everything they sent, which included both new handles, seats, springs, cartridges, all O-rings, and side sprayer would have been $67.00. Pfister sent everything in about 9 days. There was no charge for anything.

FYI, if you have old galvanized pipes, they can shed rust particles which foul the valves. I replaced a bathroom cartridge like this and found a rust chunk inside the old one. Two months later the new valve started leaking. Solution is to replace the old pipes (plus they start leaking when rusted through). I’m about 70% of the way through a Pex repipe. Slow going, the house is 100 years old and the bathroom pipes are behind plaster and lathe.

Silicone grease is a must for threads and handle to stem attachment points, for those who install their own faucets a word of wisdom is take it apart and grease everything, by this it will remove very very easy. If not you will fight and curse it all the while trying to remove due to scale build up. I just did my kitchen pull down faucet. That blasted handle did not want to come off! It took a long time, spraying it with white vinegar. Thanks

Plumber's grease is mandatory during manufacturing/final assembly, as it should be during repair/replacement of parts/components. The grease will assist in assembly/disassembly of metal parts, as well as add a protective coating to rubber gaskets/rings.

@thriftytani46
@thriftytani46 2 года назад
Generally there are two types. The one I show in my video, and the second type involves a tiny hex screw, called a set screw usually located on the back side of the handle. Remove that screw and the handle will lift right off the faucet.

So fun story, my faucet has begun a slow drip. I knew about removing the handle and tightening the nut down which does stop the drip sometimes but when I popped the small cap off the handle to get access to the screw it wasn't budging. I put my weight on the screwdriver and slooooowly tried to untighten the screw only to feel the screwdriver "wrench" it's way out meaning the screw head is now stripped. Several swear words later, I bought a screw-extractor kit only for it to NOT work. I just now finished installing the new one on the hot side and the way I went about it was small hacksaw and cut the handle off (took about 30m due to the fact the handle was solid metal and confined space AND every back n forth action was see-sawing the cartridge making me worried about breaking something else). Then I finally had access to the large nut holding the cartridge in place and unscrewed that, pulled the cartridge out... put in the new one. Had to buy a replacement handle set so it matches (since Ace didn't have the same ones). Stuck screw made this 10m job into a 1 hour job. Thanks to your video I found which cartridge I needed because the bottom black plastic piece which comes apart HAD come apart and the lower half was still stuck inside the faucet. So looking at this video I realized the cartridge wasn't complete. Used 2 needle-nose pliers to remove the bottom part and went to Ace and found the right replacement. Faucet's fixed, no drip. *Phew*

@thriftytani46
@thriftytani46 2 года назад
The cartridge must be stuck due to hard water build up. Pouring a little vinegar in the area surrounding the cartridge and letting it sit for half an hour might help. Try wiggling the cartridge so the vinegar can penetrate under the carriage. If it still won’t wiggle free, you can drill a screw into the plastic cartridge and use a pair of pliers to grip the screw to pull it out.

Hi, I replaced the 'hot' cartridge in pfister bathroom faucet, not because of low water pressure, because the handle was impossible to turn. I believe I have the exact same model, mine be older though. I ended up replacing the cold cartridge too. Everything went back together fine, I checked for debris and cleared the water lines before installing the new cartridge. Now, there is low pressure. No leaks, water comes out fine, but the pressure is about 50% of what it was. What could be wrong?

If the handle won’t turn, the problem is usually with the handle itself not the cartridge, and pfister will send you a new one for free. Then you can use the vice grip to remove it. Option B which isn’t a great one is to unclip the thin black water supply lines that runs into the bottom of each handle, then untwist the large black plastic nut from under the sink. Then you can remove the entire cold water assembly and work on untwisting it in a better position. But I couldn’t find a way to get an adequate grip to remove the handle using this method.

Ok so I took my cartridge out but where it was if filling with water. I turned my main off .... 🤔🙃
@thriftytani46
@thriftytani46 3 года назад
Turn off the valve under the sink. The main will turn off the water but if you have any pipes higher then your sink, the water will back up into your faucet. Also the main sometimes doesn’t close off completely. You can also open up the facets elsewhere in the house that’s lower then your sink, your bathtub spout would probably be a good one.

Normally the drain spot sees the brand

I replaced the seat gasket at bottom of cartridge for 50 cents. No more drip.

Considering the price of Pfister faucets, i think "about 3 weeks for the parts to arrive" is absurd. Not a bad video but i hope ACE Hardware sees this video so they can see that rotten quality tools they sell. i'm a very frugal guy but i couldn't focus on a word you said after i saw the wrench. Sorry, Pal.

Thanks for not being offended.... it says a LOT about you. i truuuly wasn't trying to be ugly and yes..... i know it's a "problem" i have. i really am verrrry frugal but i only buy very good tools... and treat them like they're going to be entered into a little beauty pageant. i don't polish them (that would be sick) but admittedly they do look like someone might have polished them when no one was looking. when i saw the ACE wrench.... i literally stopped the video!! i backed it up to see it again (several times!! lol). i was mesmerized by it. then i saw the other side of the wrench when you tightened the nut and it was worse than the first side.. i stopped it again!!! it was like i had just seen a car accident and i was the only witness!! i thought... where is his family?? Have THEY seen his wrench?? Do they buy him Birthday gifts?? Doesn't he have friends who care about him?? lolol. i briefly thought about sending you a wrench... under the condition the other one is safely buried in your backyard!! Then i honestly tried watching the rest of the video but all i could think about was that darn wrench. trust me... i know i have a problem.... clearrrly more than just one! lolol

I had a little laugh when I re-watched my video. The wrench Was bad! I’m impressed that you could identify the brand of the wrench. I only showed a little bit of the handle but otherwise no other brand lettering.

welllll... thanks but don't be impressed... as i said i stopped the video about 5 times until i could see the brand name. i wanted to make sure i nevvvver buy that brand!! Lol. to me... i think it's hilarious you've probably seen that video dozens of times and never even noticed it! as i said earlier... CLEARLY i have some issues. lol. if it were me... i'd be pitching a tent in front of Lowe's or Home Depot waiting until they opened and dashing to the tool dept for a new one! thanks for the laughs, Tani.... you're obviously a great guy and your videos help lots of people. if you'll come over and change out my bad faucet... i'll let you look at my pretty wrenches. actually... i'll need to loan you a wrench while you're at my house because your wrench isn't allowed in the house. lol

You can take that wrench apart and soak it in vinegar for a few days and that rust will just flake off. Then I would just hit it with some primer or spray paint. You could also sand it but vinegar is easy.
