What is a Frankenwatch or a Frankenstein Watch? A brief discussion about the topic… Is a Frankenwatch a MONSTER - A real Frankenstein assembled with multiple parts from different donors? Sometimes. In certain situations… I believe a Frankenwatch can be a work of art. For example, I assembled this beautiful Waltham Maximus with a period correct case, dial, and hands …and I dare to say it’s more beautiful than the original. Vortic Watch Company takes old American pocket watches and converts them to modern wristwatches. They take broken movements and restore them into amazing, functional, and strikingly beautiful watches. No monsters here.
However, there are watches that truly deserve the MONSTER label. For example, the Patek wristwatch shown may or may not have many Patek parts. Portions of the dial are definitely Patek… But the body of the watch, most of the dial, and maybe even the movement itself isn’t made by Patek. If you don’t know what you’re buying you’ll definitely be scared - I guess that makes it a monster.

Gorgeous! Love that black enamel dial and handset. Really just pops, and looks super classy. Congrats Patrick!

Thank you. 🙌🏻 I’d love to find another dial like it in a larger size.

I would much rather see someone put together a beautiful Frankenwatch, than see the components melted down or scrapped. Kudos on the project, and I agree with your decision to 'creatively repurpose' disparate parts into a new, cohesive timepiece that can be enjoyed by future generations.

A beautiful pocket watch. The movement deserves the quality gold case, dial and hands are so befitting of the splendid movement.

The Franken-watch should not be confused with the redialed hmt watches from India. Most of these has the original parts, and works as they should. The hmt movement is a licensed Citizen movement. However, if it says SEIKO or some other brand on the dial, and the dial looks a little off, it's probably a Franken-watch.

I’m not familiar with HMT. I’ll check them out.

I agree with you! These watches were customizable 100 years ago. Now a new generation of consumer is repurposing to customize original parts into a usable watch that suits their wants/needs. I have a couple of frankenwatches, that I made from parts. I also have one that I purchased with eyes wide open (it was a gilt movement illinois, and one of the plates was damaskeened gilt, the others were plain. I love the morninglory hands, and the fleur de lis hands. Sometimes, I will switch out the hands. I find that in the old days, often a high grade movement went into a cheaper case, and vice versa because folks a hundred years ago had a budget, and you can tell that the guy valued either the form or the function.

Exactly. That’s my biggest pet peeve - seeing a high-grade movement in a not so high-grade case. I want to remedy that situation immediately. 😂

Hi. I have a TELL Swiss made chronograph approximately 55mm diameter and is not working. I was told it was only worth the scrap value of the silver in the case . Could you advise me on an alternative movement. I'm not concerned about the crono function but it would be nice if it just told the time.

Honestly, I think what you were told is mostly correct. Tell pocket watches are surprisingly inexpensive. The last auction I saw was a chronograph in functioning order and it sold for $100. That’s crazy inexpensive for a chronograph. The bad thing about Swiss watches… They didn’t always use standard sizes. Your two options… Find the exact model of your watch in working order (either keep it as is or swap it into your case if you prefer your case better) or just find a different three hand pocket watch with less complications. A third option… But I don’t really know how to pursue this option. There are watchmakers that can replace the movement of your watch with a quartz. It would look just like your watch but the mechanics would be swapped out for something more modern. My aunt had this done for an antique wall clock.

My grandpa gave me a rolex. I'm thinking maybe 70s or 80s. It has a plastic not crystal face. Did rolex ever make plastic ones out of the factory or do you think he changed it?

Depending on the watch… Sometimes manufactures (even Rolex) used plastic crystals. So it very well could be original.

Marriage watches are fantastic, with the caveat the case is probably made in China. As I understood, American pocket watch movement were usually sold separate from cases and dials. Someone could buy a very expensive case and put in a cheap movement or vice versa. I think if it is period correct, it is fair for any collector. However, I have seen some cases that do have the name of the movement in them... Is there a way to tell on cross compatibility between 0s cases and the Maximus 1900 movement? I am not getting it right for mines (and I dont like the current offerings for the waltham 1900 specific cases).

The 0s Maximus was completely plug-in-play (old computer reference) - standard 0 size cases from any manufacturer should fit. You’ve got a 0 size case that doesn’t fit a 0 size Maximus? What was the original brand of the watch the case was in?
