Which of these skills do you have?!

I have all of these skills but it took me about 10+ years to get all of them at a good level. You probably scared away a ton of people with this video. It's just too much and can be very discouraging. "Full stack designer" is really not realistic unless you have 10+ years to learn it all.

I completely agree with the Frontend Developer stack. As a Fullstack Designer, I barely write JavaScript nowadays. Maybe I'll use it to create a mobile menu or accordion, but for the most part, I'm using GSAP for animations. I need to get into WebGL/Threejs though. That skillset takes web design up a different level.

very interesting video, I would add to the mix a little bit of 3d and motion design (Blender and after effects for me), also some ability in Photoshop/illustrator/ and premier would be very helpful (for creating brand assets and content for your website)... adding copy-writing (UX copy specially) and some marketing/SEO to the mix is very important too (because in this case you usually create the whole brand experience for your users...) for everyone who is just beginning here, you typically take years to learn this stuff and be good at it, and of-course you will not be as good as a specialist (for ex: webGL developer) but it really depends on your goal, type of clients, and your personality type.... but you basically start with one role and expand into other roles while working on projects or full time job... also I would suggest to start by learning the foundations very well, like learning graphic design foundations and learning coding very well too... also investing in high quality courses can give you a competitive edge... For me for example I came from computer engineering BG, so I already learnt JS, HTML, CSS, and WordPress, some branding and UI design knowledge as well. I love learning new stuff, and trying different things out, right now I'm working on a branding/webdesign project for an existing company, so I had to learn tons of new stuff and revisit some stuff that I already knew, like learning adobe AI, Blender, storytelling, and tons of stuff about branding...

Thanks for the video, this is great to see others thinking about what it means to be a full stack designer. By your definition I would be a FS designer + UX Research and UX Strategy. I’ve also worked as a front end designer so I’ve got that covered, along with interaction design. My professional title is Lead UX Architect, which is something that distinguishes my ability to do end to end UX ( within the agency I work for ) . I also do AV production and now moving into XR design. One thing I’ve noticed is the emergence of the term ‘experience designer’ where ‘user’ is not part of the title. I’m seeing this with UI or digital designers that are doing a little bit more than usual. It does however concern me as they are often not trained or qualified in pure UX activities. I do believe a full stack designer should know a bit of html and css, but not necessarily js. However a good interaction designer should be fluent in js as well as front-end development, with the ability to do basic html prototypes. My definitions would look a bit like this… UX ARCHITECT ( End to end practitioner ) > UX Research + UX Strategy + UX Design FULL STACK DESIGNER > UI Designer + Web Designer + Digital designer + Graphic Designer DESIGN UNICORN All of the above + Front-end dev. SPECIALISMS > Interaction Designer / VFX Motion Graphics Designer / Finished Artist / XR Designer As a design unicorn with some of the specialisms, would love to chat more about the emergence of FS designer vs experience designer :-) Happy to share LinkedIn / Folio etc upon request.

This is a great analysis, what college degree/specialty do you think is this under if it exist, as a base knowledge? This will always start on design principles, a solid knowledge with it. I'll put another on top of (UX Research + UX Strategy + UX Design) which is a little bit of Marketing Strategy.

I know you're young but the term "full stack Designer" has been around since before people were called full stack Developers. And here's the deal, they don't need ANY development knowledge, but they do need much more design skills than you realize. I first heard of it in the late 90's when my boss told me to hire one. I was the lead developer and I also did a lot of design. But I was weak on on print mediums. He wanted someone who could do websites, web ads, video, Print ads, newspaper ads, yellow pages ads, TV, Billboards, Digital Billboards and even products boxes and labels. That's what anyone I've ever heard use this phrase or anything like it was referring too. Some who can design and develop is a different animal, sometimes called a "Deseloper" but nowadays is just referred to as a "Designer/Developer".

This strikes me as a Designer/Developer mix rather than a Full Stack Designer. I think as a tech community we SHOULD AVOID this misclassification. How I see it: A full-stack designer is someone who has skills in UX, UI, Interaction/Animation, Graphic, Illustration, 3D. Surely not everyone's style would need all of those (for example, you might not want to do 3D) but these are what design skills are. I'd argue understanding the box model is part of UI design, you can even stretch it and add no-code development tools. UX is NOT optional for a full-stack designer creating digital products, same as the back-end development is not optional for full-stack developers coding large-scale apps. However, having front-end development skills is a bonus, though should remain under the umbrella it belongs to, full-stack development. As someone who designs and develops this only brings confusion to people, which is our job as designers to eliminate. I really hope we as a tech community can have more clarity and stop using the same terms for different meanings.

The term "Full Stack Designer" doesn't work, especially if including Front End (Web) Development. While HTML and CSS are more design based languages in concept but, JavaScript is a scripting language. A designer should never have to be a developer. So, essentially a "Full Stack Designer" is just a UX/UI Designer who knows Front End Web Development. A designer is the person who decides the look and feel. A developer is the person who builds it. There is no full stack design. Just a UX/UI designer that also knows front end web development.
@RodrigoMendoza7
@RodrigoMendoza7 Год назад
"A designer should never have to..." is a bit strong. I think it depends on the person and his/her interest for these matters. In my case, I do both UI and Front End. I'm not into developing brand identity but definitely take it into account when I'm coming up with moodboards to get some inspiration for my projects.

Your first response was reaction to the "should never" part of the statement and ignored the "have to".

This is a good point, I think the more you know the more inclined to code or design is your profile, sometimes it is required that the front-end developer works on tasks unrelated to the UI, imagine spending your time implementing a map or API calls. At the end of the day, it also depends on the industry's needs and your personal interests.
