If you ask anyone at Medium who the company's key employees are, Pete Davies' name will likely crop up near the top of the list. But "product scientist" is one of those classic tech company job titles that usually elicits a blank stare and polite nod when it's the answer to the "What do you do?" question at a party. So it was fascinating to meet Pete Davies in person and find out what exactly it is that he does, and why he's so good at doing it.

Fancy title but isn't that a data analyst? More cool titles for old jobs?

He works with the data analysts to not just see what the users are spending time doing, what are they most likely going to click next, but he knows the product well enough to know what their end goal actually is and what business functions the users are most likely doing to create a data footprint that looks like that. A lot of analysts just build the data models and calculate standard deviations and stuff, they don't actually know the product or how customers use it.

Dvorak, it was designed to be easier and more efficient for your hands... as opposed to QWERTY which was literally built to be inefficient and have commonly used letters be farther away from each other so you wouldn't jam the typewriter.
