Thanks to your series I’m going to turn my 40 gallon into a reef aquarium. Is the skimmer the only filtration you used for this tank ? Looks like a great tool for keeping a healthy tank

This particular tank has a skimmer, hang on refugium, power filter, plus the biological filtration.

I dont like how my ghost skimmer for my IM tank is making a lot of micro bubbles in the tank and it gets everywhere i did put it in the tank not too long ago but its still there.

What is best for a 53 gallon saltwater aquarium the AquaEl OptiSet 240 ltr. I like the 9004 but I'd like your advice please

What's the biggest tank you would use this particular model for? Would I need a different model for a 55g or 75g?

The Comline 9012 might get you to a 55gal, but at that point it may be worth looking at larger models that sit outside the tank or even look into drilling your tank and adding in a sump.

The proper adjustment can be even more challenging because foam fractionization is a simple process they all do. Some are ruined by design of way too much flow. The efficiency is terrible then as dirty water in and dirty water out with very little skim off per pass.

Hey I know this might be an odd question, but whats a good protein skimmer replacement for the redsea max E 170? I certainly think it’s a decent skimmer! but the only problem is I struggle cleaning and removing it every 6 months to clean the pump and the body of the skimmer, and I can’t open the body to clean the inside of it due to the design. so I was wondering if there was a different skimmer for the E 170 which could fit in the back sump and of course that’s a lot easier to clean? I’ve been looking at the Tunze Comline Skimmer 9012 DC and I was wondering if that one could fit in the back sump on the redsea max E 170 if it won’t please give me suggestions?

I have a similar in tank type skimmer. Both skimmer and tank has been running for a week now doing the same cycle as you have. My skimmer is filling my tank with lots of micro bubbles from the return pipe. Any idea why this is? Thanks

Most skimmers will take a few weeks to really break in. During this break-in period, you may see excess micro-bubbles, but they'll almost always calm down on their own.

Hello, just starting my first 40 gallon breeder tank. Is the protein skimmer the only filter/pump that is used in this guide? I went to my local fish shop and they recommended me to use a canister filter. Thank you in advance and love the guides.

For our 5 Minute Saltwater Aquarium guide, we used a variety of filters including a skimmer, power filter, and on one of the tanks, a hang-on refugium for macro algae.

I’m seeing on some channels that you don’t need a skimmer? They aren’t saying how often they do water changes without one…

With the right filtration and water change schedule, a skimmer isn't 100% required to have a successful reef tank. That said, it usually makes life easier having one.

Unfortunately, skimmers will not work in freshwater.

Cleaning skimmers at a utility sink using tap water is just fine 👍

What’s is the white substance that builds up in the skimmer Venturi. How do we reduce or eliminate it. I’m currently using an aqua max skimmer that clogs after a week. Thanks

It's usually precipitate. Make sure that you're not dosing too close to the skimmer's intake as this can contribute to it clogging up faster.

Is this only for "Reef" aquariums or can I use it on freshwater tanks too?

Unfortunately, the bubbles don't work the same way in freshwater as they do in salt. So for a freshwater system, protein skimmers are essentially useless.

I'm doing a lot of research right now into this since I'm only doing freshwater and upgrading tank soon, the water's been smelling a little awful even when I water change and clean the filter. I got this liquid to neutralize the water and it seems to help but someone said it's temporary. I appreciate it for replying fast!

Do you need a protein skimmer for a soft and lps coral system or will a refugium be enough for this setup?

A protein skimmer isn't necessarily a requirement. You can certainly beef up your other filtration methods or increase water change frequency/volume and not run a skimmer. It's all about balancing the amount of waste that the fish/food produce with the amount of waste you remove.

Upgrading the sump on a Red Sea, can you use any one you like or just the Red Sea Model and it plumbing? Also what is the pricing for that item? Thanks in advance and this is an awesome series!!

You would be able to use another model of sump, as long as this can fit in the stand underneath the tank! You could measure inside of your stand, and compare this to the dimensions of some of the sumps we carry to determine if this will work for you. You will still have to adapt your pump to the tank in the same fashion.

I am looking at the red sea 625 xxl. Any reason your upgrading the sump? I watched this video to see if any protein skimmer can go into the red sea sump-- can you answer this? How does the protein skimmer attach in the sump?

Awesome technology...awsm. is there a swivel-head Powerhead made by any one ? Nice if would be the cordless type option also ! If there is I would like to order 16 for starters if correct size !

These Vortechs are unable to swivel in that fashion. Something like a Tunze pumps would do this, but it would have cables inside of the tank. This would be very cool to see an option like this.

We would check to make sure that air flow is not restricted, and that you have a decent amount of bioload within your tank!

A protein skimmer can only remove what enters it. Try increasing surface movement if you're noticing a "scum" build up on the water surface.

Reef Octopus makes some great HOB skimmer options. I wouldn't hesitate to run one if a sump wasn't an option.

Bulk Reef Supply Definitely but whats the better option? The classic 90 or classic 1000 for my 55g. They both around the same price.

Skimmers are a component to the overall filtration system. Most reefers will use them in conjunction with other filtration like filter socks, refugiums, water changes, etc.
