Great video. Rally3 is the best thing the FIA did for the WRC in the past 30 years imo. A much needed entry level 4wd rally car. Hope we see more manufacturers soon!

Thank you! Totally agree, it always blew my mind how big of a jump it was from R5 to R2.

if more manufactures can get involved in this class it will be a win win for Rally. Toyota is already starting to "complain " about the lack of other constructors in Rally 1 and I can see why . $$$$ way to expensive to make and run Rally 1 but look at Rally 3 and 2 ! The future of rally is here in these classes. Now it is up to the F.I.A. to control the cost of these classes. An added bonus.... they even look like something you can buy at a dealership !!!

Couldn't agree more! It's almost like Group N or Group A, where they're a production-based car with a few key performance upgrades, like suspension and sequential transmission.

R3 a new category that attracts a young drivers age 18 and above courage for FIA

Rally3 is more like what Group N production cars were in the past - more affordable way to enter into 4WD racing. For some (especially on national level) it was better to stick with either the Mitsubishi Lancer Evo IX/X or Subaru Impreza WRX than trading up to the more expensive Super 2000 and later Group R5 cars (which became the final level before the WRC Car). When Group N (later renamed to Group R4 and then to NR4) was phased out of the World Rally Championship (they've remained for a while in regional championships) drivers were left with a difficult choice - either picking the more epensive R5 cars or trade down to the more affordable, but 2WD R3 cars (like Citroën DS3 R3T or Renault Clio R3T). With the Rally2 being essentially rebadged R5 cars and Rally4 being merely a renamed Group R2 (an even lower category of cars) it left a sizeable gap for the FIA to fill. And thus Rally3 is the middle ground - a Rally4 car with Rally2 underpinnings. However, if Rally3 is successful, it may have the side effect on detering manufacturers from creating a car for the Rally2 regulations. The question would be "Why pony up millions for a Rally2 car when we can make a car compatible for 3 rulesets where parts can be interchangeable?". There are absolutely no plans at the moment from Alpine/Renault to build a Rally2 version of the Clio. And considering that Skoda mollywhopps in WRC-2 and other championships where Rally2 is the top category, I think that other manufacturers may decide to build cars for Rally3 and below (why build a product in a class where one brand had pretty much dominated and has free reign to develop their car as they don't have cars in the other categories)

The thing about the different classes that the manufacturers need to consider is cost vs. the marketing and R&D value. There is a lot more marketing value in the top classes because they get more attention and TV time.

But the old Group N had to be AWD right from the factory (for the AWD cars), could not use sequential gearboxes, and could not have an AWD 'kit' added to a production FWD car, like the current Rally 3s all use. But yes, in concept/'spirit', and tune levels, they do recall that now defunct class. 😉 Still, YES, a great class to have, and I hope to see many more crews running these cars (besides the 2-3 currently) here in the USA.

Speaking as a competitor and builder with over 4 decades of experience, it seems FIA keep making it increasingly difficult for budget competitors. How ridiculous are rules that within days of rally 3 rules being announced, M sport announced ready rally3 cars while affordable cars like Yaris GR-4 developed for motorsport were excluded from WRC by rally3 rules which exclude instead of include existing performance cars. What use are rally3 rules when 3 years later only one other brand is trying to join so called WORLD RALLY CHAMPIONSHIP "budget entry level" category?

100,000 euros still seems quite high for something that should be an entry point in a way.
@rallybeast

The real entry points are Rally5 and Rally4. Many series won’t allow you to begin in a turbocharged 4WD car.

SO what will be the long term plan for m-sport/Ford? They are no longer produce the fiesta and focus. Are they switch to Puma for all competition?
@rallybeast
@rallybeast 10 месяцев назад
That’s a really good question. I’m not sure but I’ll do some digging to find out. I would assume they would transition to the Puma in the next generation.

Are you sure that M-Sport is using the old Fiesta ST 1.6L EcoBoost 4 banger in these Rally 3 Fiestas, and not the current ST's 3 pot, 1.5L power plant??

Excellent video and explanation. Love the intro of the R3 class. I actually think rallying would!d be in a much better place if R1 class was dropped and R2 with 34mm restrictors became the top flight WRC class. Would be a massive boost in interested manufacturers and keep the current R2 cost caps in place to try and keep a reasonably level playing field.

I'm very fond of this class, just too bad I don't see them much outside the WRC! It's kinda weird how in our national championship, you can see 15 R5/Rally2 cars, 10 R2/Rally4 cars and only 1 or 2 Rally3 machines! I guess since you're not fighting for the overall title or for the 2WD title, it's not perceived as prestigious to drive a Rally3 car at the national level.
@rallybeast
@rallybeast 5 месяцев назад
They're so new that not very many of them have made their way into the US. There are 3-4 right now.
@LS1conehead
@LS1conehead Месяц назад
@@rallybeast He is not speaking about the US, since we do not have 15 crews running Rally 2 cars! (Lucky if it is 5-6 at any given event. ☹) There could be up to 10 crews running Rally 4s though, if you include the old, original (and now quite 'ratty'/beat up) lower powered, naturally aspirated rides into the mix with the few newer, R2C boosted versions.
