What is a Stablecoin? Most Comprehensive Video Guide
www.blockgeeks.com
“Stable coin” is a term used in cryptocurrency to describe cryptocurrencies meant to hold stable values. For example, Tether (USDT) is a blockchain based asset meant to trade for $1 USD. Tether is a “price-stable cryptocurrency” that is “pegged” to the U.S. dollar.
blockgeeks.com/guides/tether/
There are a number of stable coins in circulation today, and a number more have been attempted in the past (with varying degrees of success).
Each stable coin has a unique set of mechanisms, but they all generally work the same way: They hold collateral of some type and manage the supply to help incentivize the market to trade the coin for no more or less than $1. For some, like Tether or TrueUSD, the concept is to hold actual dollars in reserve that are redeemable for the token. For others, like Dai, they hold crypto assets in reserve and have a lending system.sing value due to price volatility-one of the reasons why cryptocurrencies haven't been widely adopted yet. The likes of bitcoin, Ethereum and Litecoin have been used severally for transactions involving online payments. They have, however, not been reliable for making day-to-day transfers due to high volatility in price.

Isn't volatility just a matter of perspective? If you measure everything against the US dollar, then bitcoin looks volatile, same as gold and same as real estate. But if you measured everything against a bitcoin, gold, or real estate, then it's the US dollar that appears volatile.

No, because unless everyone is suddenly adopting crypto, exchange rates become unstable making trade unrealistic. It might be good for investment, but that's about it.

Speculation helps stabilize prices. The operation by the Fed does not stabilize the value of the US$, it helps create inflation and uneven distribution of wealth.

I don’t understand the fiat-backed stablecoins. If I buy one USDC at Coinbase do they immediately send that dollar to the bank storing dollars? When I sell the USDC does the bank immediately withdraw a dollar and give it to Coinbase? How does the bank get paid - they can loan out some of the dollars they are holding?

On #3, The Fed buys and sells securities from primary dealers (banks) to manipulate interest rates (price of money), not money supply. The notion that a "stablecoin" can adjust its "price" by issuing more coins when the "price" goes up and then buying them back when the "price" goes down, is just nonsensical. Who will you be issuing the coins to, who will you be buying the coins from and what will you be using to make that purchase?

Awesome video. I learned a lot from this. Crypto currency is exciting stuff. I've done research about how our currency works and it is still a fiat currency if you really look into it. It's highly based on oil. It may not be a traditional fiat system but it is a very volatile hybrid for non collateral and fiat.

I am too very skeptical about a crypto-coin following the sinking ship USD. Nixon pulled the dollar from all precious metals & natural resources causing a 5-decade long deminishing dollar. Creating overworked families and inflated housing markets and across the board exaggerated compound interest rates. Creating a nation wide indebtors prison for US citizens trusting the all mighty USD. @Gary Fowler, I'm laughing with you.

Hgreat video, ive subscribed 👍 just a quick question id appreciate you answering for me. Whats the use case/ purpose of people using a stablecoin over their fiat currency if it has the same value? Ie why pay 1 x GUSD & pay fees when i can transfer 1 x USD with no fees and from my bank? Especially if 1 GUSD = 1 USD? Im failing to see why people would use stable coins in everyday life over using their bank card online for example. Id appreciate you getting back to me. Thanks Darren 🙏

Stablecoins have a much greater application in countries that don't have a strong central bank or are experiencing rapid inflation or deflation. Ie. Unionbank in the philippines has its own stablecoin to provide an alternative to the unstable local currency.

Why do we want a coin that’s backed by the collapsing USD? That is to say, the purchasing power of the USD is weak and far weaker in the future. So why would I want to get dollars, and IS USD the standard value? “Like USD” was a vague description. I’m sorry I missed the reasoning but I do want to understand better :\

It's not the value of the material that determines the price of a dollar, but the collective trust(that's why it's called fiat which practically means trust) that is bestowed onto money according to the in/deflation ratio, which is in turn determined by fluctuations within the prices of goods, services and assets in an economy..

but why would you try hard to stay in an unfair system like that ? Ofcourse you can pay a salary in bitcoin, with its volatile price, the salaries would be paid in percent. For example if theres a boss and 5 employees, the boss takes 10%, each employees takes 5%, the remaining stays in the company. If the price of the bitcoin evoluate, the whole economy evoluates too, all prices should be in percent in such a system.

This stable currency is a joke, it’s all relative, dollar is volatile as well but we all accepted it as one to it self and never changing. If tomorrow we switch to a Bitcoin we won’t have any problem cryptocurrency’s are only volatile while compared to a fiat currency. We “decide” what’s the value of something by trading it and using it in our every day economy

She misses the whole value based ecosystem of virtual property. A stable coin as opposed to one not is one that holds its value relatively steady or climbs. Coins birth at fractions so low that also they cannot be yet anyway, considered stable. Also coin community's that have questionable reputation gives rise to instability. Coins after years of investigation free posting and reporting are commonly stable or more stable. She names repititiosly the market and industry terms as though they're clear defined to all be both attached to fiat and digital coins or assets. Untrue. There has to be a clear path forward psychologically and decidedly which currency a consumer or investor is given to, first. Great effort though thx.
