Here is my ALL TIME favourite Acceptance and Commitment Therapy ACT exercise and metaphor. It comes from ACT made simple by Dr Russ Harris and is used extensively by ACT therapists.
This is a MUST for any ACT or CBT therapist and I get massive perspective shifts from my clients. A great lesson in you don’t HAVE to challenge thoughts.

Your teaching style is clear and succinct. I’m a therapist who has been learning and practicing ACT for a year now and found this helpful!

Thanks for taking the time to comment. Still finding my feet a bit with the presentation and where to pitch it and trying to find a balance between what ACT therapists, therapists who don’t know ACT and people who aren’t therapists at all will find helpful.

Accepting we have certain thoughts and noticing when they are occurring and how frequently; and also how we feel about having particular thoughts is key to making progress. However, I think it would be helpful to have a video explaining how ownership or the absence of ownership of thoughts correlates to acceptance or otherwise of thoughts in order to deal with them; because acceptance is generally positive, whereas ownership isn’t always that way.

Thanks Lauren, glad you find them helpful. Getting in the flow with them now regarding how I feel in front of the camera, and the practical side too in terms of editing etc so hopefully plenty more helpful content to come.

Does this work for core beliefs/schemas? Wouldn't keeping the paper in front of you keep you stuck in rumination about the painful belief by reminding you of it at all times? Also, do you use this in the initial session with your clients?

Well in this metaphor the paper has to be there (as there is no psychological mechanism to stop thinking that is healthy) but it isn't directly in front of you. Having it in front of you will be the same as rumination, and most likely keep you stuck. We need to try and find away (and I appreciate this isn't easy) to metaphorically put that paper on our laps (i.e. have an acceptance of the thought being there but not allowing it to get in the way of taking some meaningful action in the present moment). So if you weren't ruminating what would you be doing? Whats the rumination getting in the way of? I would do this very early. Session one might be more fact finding about why they have come to me and if its something i can help with. I would almost certainly doing it in session 2 or 3 and then finish the session with something along the lines of using the next sessions to practice ways of metaphorically putting the thoughts on our lap so they don't interfere with what we want to get out of life (but make it more specific to their therapy goal). Hope that makes sense!
