What a great video. I'm a Canadian and hardcore hockey fan. When I spent a year in Australia for school, AFL easily became my favourite sport while I was there. I didn't care for the two rugby leagues. I didn't care for cricket. I couldn't believe how seriously they took amateur swimming.... but the AFL, man, now that was exciting! I still wake up at 430am here in Canada to see important AFL playoff games.

wasn't a taunt at soccor players athleticism. Afl fields are twice the size and theres no offsides. You just need to be more athletic to accomdate for that.

Also If you look at the numbers, Afl players are larger and stronger than soccer players, afl is a more physical game requiring more energy, plus the elite players in the afl are running in between 13-15 kilometres per game as opposed to 11 by soccer players. Despite AFL longer game time the numbers back up the afl here.

Rad Radish . As a mad Swans fan I salute you my friend for having the decency to admit that about Capper’s Mark, it certainly was unbelievable a journalist said Capper made time standstill on his shoulders. I met a one eyed Hawks fan without your intelligence who claimed that the mark should’ve been paid in the back. I eventually convinced him that if that was the case then every speccy could be deemed in the back. I met him too, in a bank. I said Warwick you should never have left the Swans and gone to Brisbane. He said, “Yeah I know but the million dollars was good.” Plenty of players can take fantastic marks, but in my opinion he was the best, “Acrobatic mark” of all time. He’s a professional flog, he makes a living out of it. I remember when he teased Sam Newman with his coffee caravan he called Cappercino. Merry Christmas mate.

Not to mention the wider range of skills needed compared to other sports, fewer players on the bench and the contact nature of the sport. Also a lot of sports scientists agreeing on footy players being fucking fit. Whenever a sports star from basketball/soccer/nfl/etc comes over to try AFL they inevitably mention that it is the hardest sport they have tried.
@andrewohare3872
@andrewohare3872 4 года назад
Cox is nowhere near a star. he had one good game. We have had a few irishmen come in, but none have been outright stars, so im not too sure who you're talking about. Its not about which sports stars are better, so don't be so defensive. Its about which sports require the widest range of skills. Ive got nothing against other sports. I love other sports, and all atheletes do shit I could never do, but to not give props to the effort required to be good at footy is silly. and again, this is the viewpoint of a large portion of the worlds leading medicos, trainers, sports scientists. Im more likely to trust the people that test this shit, than some angry youtube commentor with an axe to grind because they felt their precious heroes were challenged.

I'm just a scared little man, who when my life (afl) is threatened, feels the need to pull anything out of my arse to justify its existence. I was also absolutely, 100% trashing on any other sport. I was implying that any athlete playing anything other than AFL is a useless sports player. Because I'm so ashamed of AFL. Or fumbleball rather. I'm so jealous of other sports. I am so insecure in myself. Please go easy. I'm fragile.

@S, Lianis Nice attempt at trolling, why waste your time. What are the 2 country towns you speak of? I could say the same for NRL if I want to be a trolling prick, 1 city and 2 country towns. I would argue that north of Vic border popularity is far closer than you think, most NRL fans are part time fans mate otherwise NRL crowds would be bigger than they are on average as well as club memberships. As it stands AFL team Sydney Swans has a far greater membership than any NRL team, even GWS Giants (9 year old team) has more memberships than every NRL team bar one (Brisbane Broncos) NRL (entire league) average crowd 2019 = 15030, AFL ave crowd in NSW 2019 = 23014, AFL Sydney Swans home game ave = 30070 AFL (entire league) average crowd 2019 = 35122. EDIT- Even AFL in QLD had 19385 average crowd, over 4k more than NRL and Gold Coast finished bottom of ladder. AFL = fumble ball?? turn it up mate, you realise an NRL ball has more grip, plus Rugby League or Union are NOT a 360 degree game with no offside, in other words if they were they would most likely fumble alot more than AFL players.

Adam, so picture this, players are running full speed all over that huge ground for 120 minutes. Plus they're crashing into each other taking those spectacular marks and all that is why the man said they have more stamina than a soccer player. He wasn't teasing you, he was absolutely correct. These players are running flat out for up to 18 km per game. Players judge the distance before bouncing, and so they don't go further than it, they usually bounce it before running 16 yards. The umpire is also a good judge of the distance, and will pay a free kick to the opposition if they run too far.

You can set up a league and import players from anywhere in the world much like they've done here with a-league and in the states with MLS, however we don't have the population to be exporting athletes to other countries to help improve play and exponentially grow the game... I know a lot of people from QLD and NSW have been conditioned since birth to hate on the sport, but it is just so strange to me. It's clearly no threat to league or union and is a completely different game so what's the harm in supporting both?

I've been here a while now and have come to enjoy League as I'm open-minded and find most sports entertaining once I learn the rules and objective etc (NFL and NBA mostly). Some of the goals and marks and sensational and you won’t see anything as spectacular in the other football codes. Check out some of the “best marks/goals” videos and you’ll see what I mean.

Ah your one of those people that like how the game has been ruined , the bump and hard hit WAS part of football , made the game something special , now it's just a scrappy mess with umpires blowing a whistle every 30 sec and players , spectators and commentators have no idea why but that's cool each to their own

I afl, you only don’t get up, if you can’t, it is an unwritten rule! If you break and arm and stay down, you are a wimp, so get up and walk off, but if you get knocked out cold till the ambo you are only recognised if you go for the ball, if not, you are dropped for when you get back. That! Is south Australian under 13 football

You saw the size of the field my friend. That’s why they mention fitness up against the soccer players. These guys run anything up to 18 km in a game, and the operative word is run. A different more energy sapping constant type of moving which is different to the way the soccer players move around. On top of this, almost an extra half an hour of playing time makes a huge difference in terms of the fitness needed.

TwoInchrPinchr . I have a feeling you would love it to bits my friend. It is definitely non-stop action with players crashing into each other evading each other, bouncing, kicking and so forth. It will have you on Edge for two hours minus two 10 minute, and one 20 minute break. And just a heads up, it is illegal in Australia to follow any other AFL team except the Sydney Swans. Lol, we love foreigners who love Aussie rules! And the Grand Final this year was not at all shocking. The Tigers paid in blood, sweat, and tears to become such a team. We were not about to be run over again like Collingwood did to us in '18. Also, the Giants probably did as well as Collingwood would have had they won the week before. Bear in mind that Richmond had to fight an equally gruelling Prelim against Geelong. Richmond just displayed relentless pressure through the Finals and no one could stand up to it.

Barack Obama . You are quite correct Mr Obama. Back in 1896, Cricket players decided they needed a sport to keep fit during the off season. They concocted a game by taking a few things from different sports. They certainly would have kept rather fit, considering the distance from one goal to the other, WAS ONE MILE.

@Moose6340
@Moose6340 2 года назад
Well, the video was made for us Philistines here in non-metric-land. :) Although I didn't actually know the rule was every 15m for a bounce, I figured it was just "every so often". I assume nobody can exactly keep track if somebody ran 15.5m without bouncing. And the thing that gets me about the best AFLers isn't even their sheer fitness, although that' mindblowingly impressive. It's the ability for some of those guys to hit a dead-accurate kick 50 meters on a dead run. From a mark is amazing enough. But at a full sprint while somebody is one step behind you and somebody else is getting ready to knock you into the sixth row? I can't even comprehend it.

@Abbott IsGone consistently AFL players reach 16-20 ks a game, soccer players only ever get up to about 11, 9-10 being the average. If you add the strain of being tackled, tackling, getting bumped, jumping and all other physical aspects of the sport, I think its fair to say they are much fitter. Its not a competition, but they quite literally are the fittest athletes in the world.

Aussie Rules was first played back in 1858, with rules being regulated in 1870. The first established competition was in South Australia(SAFA) on 30 April 1877, followed shortly after by Victoria(VFA); all other states and territories had competitions by the early 1900's.

The stamina part is true but that's during the game. Some midfielders have been known to run nearly 30kms during a single game. The players go through an intense recovery as they prepare for the next week's game. The season is only 22 weeks with finals added at the end. It's always been a tough sport. another thing that i find really cool and interesting about aussie rules is how old the game is. it was invented in the 1850s and first played in 1858, meaning that it's older than both basketball and NFL. you might want to have a look at some of the older stuff like top 10 AFL Enforcers - you'll find that the game used to be a LOT harder and brutal, especially in the 70s-90s period - or highlights from guys like Leigh Matthews, Gary Ablett sr, Tony Lockett and Malcolm Blight just to name a few
