What is an art gallery? What does it do for an artist? How do I find art galleries in my city, or in any city? I get a lot of questions about art galleries since I go to them so frequently, so I put together a list of the most common questions I get about art galleries...
1. How do you know if a gallery is ‘good’? (6:25)
2. What do you wear to an art gallery? (8:50)
3. Can you take pictures? (9:50)
4. How do you understand/enjoy the show more? (10:24)
5. What can you not do in a gallery? (12:12)
6. How do you know when there's an exhibit? (14:02)
7. Are the artworks for sale? (17:32)
7. Why doesn’t anyone talk to me in galleries? (19:16)

What not to do in an art gallery (l.o.l.) I work Security in an Art Museum, and you just listed all our rules (and pet peeves). Also, I'm glad Gallery Assistants aren't all over me when I walk into a gallery. Honestly, I usually just wanna look at art. I'm not looking for ocnversation (unless I do have a question). Thanks, also, for the explanation of the different types of art galleries.

My way to visit galleries is to walk in without any prior knowledge. I paint ....so my radar takes me to what I want to see. Then I get right up close, take it all in. Then I leave taking the ambiance with me. It's a big thrill to find work I like, the rest doesn't matter to me.

Hi! Thank you for sharing so much great art content on IG and now YT! I did have a quick comment on your answer to "How do you know if a gallery is ‘good’?" You answered the question assuming by "good", the asker meant "prestigious/elite/expensive". Perhaps that is what they meant by "good". However, since you seem to be a forum for many "up-and-coming" art lovers, I would like to add that one can discover what's "good" to them by exploring a plethora of galleries big and small, encountering works, and discovering what their eye is most drawn to, even if that means they might ultimately prefer a tiny start-up gallery that won't be in Basel any time soon. There's nothing inherently "better" about art from a mega gallery e.g. Gagosian than a mid-sized gallery e.g. 303 or small gallery e.g. Freight & Volume.
@MaryLynn_Buchanan
@MaryLynn_Buchanan 3 года назад
Thanks for watching! You're absolutely right, some of my favorite galleries are in the lower east side - like Freight + Volume. The biggest thing that makes a gallery 'good' (IMO) is if they're fostering the career of an artist and not simply buying works and re-selling them for marked-up prices...think a Taglialatella. That's what people mean when they're asking me if a gallery is good or not because it's hard to tell sometimes on walking in if a gallery has a legit relationship with their artists. Looking to see if an art gallery attends an art fair is just one of many ways to see if a gallery is 'good' - and there are many different kinds of art fairs such as Independent and Felix - that many of the smaller emerging galleries do participate in. I'd say the two things that apply to ALL galleries would be if they have a regular exhibition schedule and artists with good CV's that they have a direct relationship with then that's a good enough indicator.

Your videos are phenomenal! I have a young gallery (5 years old) in a renaissance castle in Austria, growing very quickly, and my biggest wish is to have a branch of my gallery in New York. Have you ever thought about making one of your videos about how galleries could move in this direction or even more, how to find the right partners for such an endeavor in a foreign country, or specifically, New York? Best wishes from Parcus Gallery.

Thank you for your sharing about galleries! I got a few questions. I enjoy art and I am interested in starting a gallery in the future. But i am not living in big cities like NY LA London etc. Have you ever been to some galleries in small cities and small towns? How can they survive with less niche customers and collectors? And do you think galleries can only survive in big cities? Thanks

Interesting what you said about what to wear when visiting galleries. I have experience visiting a gallery in Chelsea, where the owner commented on my shoes because they were not expensive enough. I only had something comfortable on, because of the weather and I did a lot of walking in Chelsea obviously. :D

I would think a good gallery sells good art, and practices good business. Also to be a good visitor, I would recommend discussing the materials of the art, along with the concept of the piece... it shows some knowledge and context, and may open the gallerist up for conversation 👍
@mikenoneofyourbusiness7122
@mikenoneofyourbusiness7122 6 месяцев назад
What’s “good art”? If art is beautiful and decorative, it’s considered boring and won’t end up in galleries. What is “good business”? Because, galleries make most cash from abusing the artists, so… is it really a “good business” if the gallery is wealthy that way? Technically they maximize profits, but I’d never consider such a business “good”, but capitalism says profits are the only mentric of how good the business is. Start thinking deeper about what YOU want, vs what the galleries want. Yeah… it’s complicated.

I love your content, Mary. I wonder if in your gallery tours you have visited galleries that exhibit "fine art" in which the artist's medium is exclusively recycled material. I wish to investigate these as I am an artist who works predominantly in recycled plastic.

I love your online content! How do approach discussing the price and whether it is set in stone or flexible? Obviously if it’s an artist in high demand probably not, but how do you ask?
@MaryLynn_Buchanan
@MaryLynn_Buchanan 3 года назад
I would always recommend negotiating. I usually ask what the range is because galleries feel more comfortable with ballparks. But in general you can always negotiate price as well as how you’d like to pay - in full, installments, etc. Worse they can say is no

Could you give a similar talk on the best way to approach a gallery if you are an artist wanting to exhibit your work and how to choose which ones would be likely to welcome your approach?
@mikenoneofyourbusiness7122
@mikenoneofyourbusiness7122 6 месяцев назад
It’s a huge no no. You’re not supposed to “approach” galleries, they approach YOU if you’re worthy. Grow your community and become famous online first, or no gallery will accep you. They need only artists with proven success and with the platforms to SELL your work. Galleries will find you and ask to represent you, eventually. But if you approach THEM, you’re clearly jyst a deaparate nobody.

How can you tell when a new genre or style of art occurs?
@mikenoneofyourbusiness7122
@mikenoneofyourbusiness7122 6 месяцев назад
You already know the answer. From art history. Unless you’re new to arts? New style occurs when there is a big change is society, like a huge world war, a giant plague, big industrial or social revolutions etc. We are in that exact place right now, with post pandemic insanity, change in work culture, self isolation and mental illness as a side effect, outgrowing capitalism that is now a negative thing, change in tge world order, divisions by race/gender/culture etc The change is NOW! You could be the new artist, creating revolutionary fine artworks that will allow humanity to jeal and move forward. It’s in YOUR hands!

Nice presentation. I must say I love many galleries in NYC and currently living in Sydney, Aus' with many great galleries. The one thing I find totally off putting is the elitist snooty BS that seems to go hand in velvet glove with many galleries in areas like Chelsea NYC and Paddington Sydney. Hence many of the best artists historically were/are not the blue chip gallery's invited-by-art-clergy spread and it is far worse this day and age with most of the artists signed to posh galleries more a case of merch' and capitalist venture undertaking than any credible artistic slant.

@mikenoneofyourbusiness7122
@mikenoneofyourbusiness7122 6 месяцев назад
It’s not something anyone else will do for you, it’s on YOU. Obviously you need to have a huge social media following, so that the galleries FIND you and CONTACT you. How else will you become visible to them? It’s not like you approach them or contact them, it’s NOT how things work. So, stop your pathetic desperation and grow as an artist. If you can’t grow a following online, you have 100% proof that your art is NOT good or liked. Meaning, it will never be sold or represented.

@mikenoneofyourbusiness7122
@mikenoneofyourbusiness7122 6 месяцев назад
Most people are too broke to buy ANY fine artworks and have zero artistic taste. What people have on their walls is some old lame family photos and occasional ikea print, likely found near the dumpster. Seriously… Just look what your friends and family have at home lol Art is a hobby, earning even $1000 is practically impossible for even seasoned fine artists with several degrees etc. There are millions of fantastic artists, amd zero real demand. Art is an awesome hobby, not a profession or business. Unless you wish to teach annoying kids for minimum wage, but then you’re not an artist. You’re some low level teacher instead.

Gallery will approach YOU, when you’re worthy. Meaning, you need to already have a large following as a pre-requisite. Don’t have that? That means, you’re a NOBODY. Artists can never approach galleries, that’s a horrible idea and shows the pathetic despair of that artist. Huuuuge no no! Gallery will contact YOU and ASK for your CV (or find it on your popular social media links).

Most people filming videos on gallery advice have never been represented by a gallery and are just trying to grow RU-vid channel. If they were real artists with gallery representations, they’d be actually PAINTING, not filming silly videos on social media lol So, to learn about galleries - contact REAL artists who are already IN the galleries! Not some nobody.

Mary, did you never had the impression that most galleries aren't that much happy with the "Art Gallery Tourism" that is going around? I'm an artists and I know that an Art Gallery is mainly a space serving the purpose of selling art and welcoming their collectors (or influencers like you). I personally don't like it at all that art became a lifestyle thing and entertainment for the general public. People go to openings because it's "cool", drinking champagne for free and trying to get conversations with artists to get some inspiration. I know artists and art gallery owners who feel really annoyed by that trend. What do you think about it? 🙂 Best, Rebecca
