I've been following you for years , thanks. my journey took me from a to z and allot in between , I upgraded to a marantz 3 years ago but wanted more , i got two amps from emotiva that looked cool and did sound better so logically I got an xmc-2 and thought it would be the bees knees - Its not , Ive been living with this thing for 2 years it's like a bad relationship , I woke up today and thunk to myself I don't have to do this anymore im putting in for a divorce , Im pretty sure Im going to get a av7706 and be done with it and use my emotiva amps I dont really care anymore if things match or dont I just want to be happy . I had an issue with one of my amps so I had to put my marantz back in for backup and am falling in love with it all over again. maybe its me but the emotiva disrespects me on a daily basis. Have you ever felt like this before probably not because your always trying new stuff out. I should sell it while its still under warranty

I started my HT journey 3 years ago, and just completed it recently (along with a calibration by ChadB). I wasn't really sure what an AVR was and what it did when I started, either (along with just about everything else). I enjoy some of your deep dive videos, but I really appreciate you taking the time to put together these very basic HT 101 videos for the masses, Michael. Spread that passion!

I have a question: Are there any receivers that have not only 2 subwoofer outputs, but 2 individual outputs that can configured in a left-right mode? For example, when I go watch a movie in the Dolby Cinema, when it does its demonstration with the projector and “moving audio”, it shows a big tidal wave crashing down on the left side of the screen and the subwoofers shaking the left side of the theater. Is there an AVR with that kind of capability?

So you hook a 4k Blu-ray player to AV receiver, and the AVR then connects to both your TV and to the speakers? The 4k player doesn't need to connect directly to the TV at all? I have an LG C2 which doesn't support DTS so hooking up the Blu-ray player to TV and trying to watch a Blu-ray with DTS X would not be possible, but it sounds like an AVR could solve that issue?

Hi Michael, I really enjoy your videos! I have a question regarding Dirac. I have an Onkyo RZ50. I started with using Accutune, which did a decent enough job. I’ve tried running Dirac thru Onkyo’s app, and then downloading abusing the Dirac app. The mic I used was the puck mic, and then an Audessy mic. Every time I ran Dirac, I would get an error message saying there’s too much ambient noise. My set up is in my family room that opens to a kitchen and dining room. I’ve tried to make it as quiet as possible, but no luck. Any suggestions? Thank you sir!

Hey Michael. I am 10 months into the making of my home theater. I did a "soft opening" yesterday 😅. I adjusted my projector to see how big of a 2.4:1 screen I need to build. Silly question: The Nvidia Shield Pro Homepage is a 16:9 aspect ratio (most streaming boxes'menus are too). Do you adjust your projector to 16:9 so that the menu doesn't spill over your screen and then switch back to scope once a movie starts or is there a way to let my streamer know I am projecting to a scope screen and let it adjust its aspect ratio to fit my screen?
@Youthman
@Youthman 11 месяцев назад
My Harmony elite camera when I start an activity, I have it programmed to set the projector at 16:9, then once the movie starts, I would hit one button on my Harmony to switch it to 2.35:1. Now I have the madVR which automatically adjust the image using non-linear stretch within the madVR so I don’t ever have to change anything

It sounds logical but I still don't get it. I may understand the sound part of things, like Dolby Atmos if the source player doesn't have that, or the capability to hook a load of speakers to them, but it is the video portion that confuses me. What is the benefit of an already 4k Blu-ray player or PlayStation that can already output a 4k signal directly to your TV to hook that up to the AV receiver who will do the same?! I mean, does the AV receiver produce a better 4k image?! Does it make things a lot better video-wise? I'm so confused about what an AV can do better than the already great quality sources as I have mentioned in my examples.

@Youthman
@Youthman Год назад
Thank you, kindly. Some will debate that a dedicated two channel receiver is better for music than a home theater AVR, but AVR’s can absolutely sound great for music as well. Think of it this way, if an AVR sounds good for home theater, there’s music all through a movie and if it sounds good there, why wouldn’t sound good for two channel. Hope that helps.

As a professional pool player for 34 years (been playing 44 years total), I've been teaching the game for 33 of those years and have ALWAYS BELIEVED that the best way to teach is to keep it as simple as possible. Michael makes it easy to follow and understand by breaking it down into simple steps. As Michael mentioned in an earlier comment, it's important to teach people who are just learning in a simple manner and not expect them to know it like we do. I've dedicated myself to teaching the game of pool in layman's terms to someone who just picked up a cue stick for the first time to a top notch professional and Michael has done the same in this genre which is AMAZING. I have learned so much from your videos and feel VERY LUCKY AND BLESSED to have found your channel a couple years ago. They always get better and better! Because of you, I'm building a 9.2.4 system in our addition which will include a pool table of course. Maybe I can entice you to come to the Miami area since we're both in Florida once the addition has been completed in about 4 months Michael. I'll be more than happy to give you and your family a pool lesson (assuming you're interested) as a way of thanking you for all that you do for this INCREDIBLE COMMUNITY! Regardless, thank you very much for all that you do! It never goes unnoticed and I'm sure I speak for everyone when I say WE REALLY APPRECIATE IT AND APPRECIATE YOU! KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK BROTHER! 👍 😊 🎥 🍿 🎶 Before I go, I do have a question. In the setup I'm building, I have a distance of at least 30ft - 35ft between my TV and AVR (Denon x8500h) and was hoping to get an SVS HDMI cable but unfortunately the run would be too long. I'm looking into Fiber Optic HDMI and was wondering if you have a specific one you'd recommend. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for your time and have a fantastic weekend Michael! 👍 😊

Sir I am a retired teacher. A really good one but in a different area. Highest compliments to you for your easy to understand approach and your friendly demeanor. You are excellent! May I ask a question? I have a big theater in my home. My weakest link is my receiver which was old when I bought it just to get my feet wet. I even spent $40 for a remote that it didn’t come with. I have never been able to figure out how to use the controller so I’m ditching it and buying a new proper receiver. Under a thousand dollars. Here is my most important question. Will I be able to precisely control the levels of every speaker in the system? I want control over each pair of surrounds as well as the center channel and so on. This is so important to me but it’s hard to get answers in the stores these days. Please let me know if this is possible and easy to do and if you have a recommendation for a receiver between $600 and $800. I have other amps a speakers that will be used so the receiver doesn’t have to be super powerful. Just controllable and easily. If you can help me I will owe you forever. Many thanks!

Thanks for the kind words. Unfortunately, the only way you’re going to get pre-out to use your external amplifiers is to purchase a used AVR. Denon’s 2800H is $1,200 and does not have preouts. The 3800H does have preouts but is $1,700.

Every AVR will allow you full control over levels, distance and crossover for each channel. If you want complete control, you will need to purchase Audyssey Multi EQ X ($200) or an AVR with Dirac Live.

Hi. I purchased a Denon AVRS930H back in 2018. Since then I have upgraded from some small definitive technology speakers to a pair of Klipsch RP 500M's and the matching center channel as well as an SVS sb 1000 pro. My question is, if the receiver I bought is powerful enough to drive all of my speakers and sub or should I consider upgrading. The receiver wasn't very expensive and I would consider it a budget receiver, but will upgrading to something like the Denon X2800h make a big difference to overall sound, or just give me more features?
@Youthman
@Youthman Год назад
A lot has to do with how many total speakers you are driving. Take a look at this video - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Oym-t4rCvJQ.html. The more speakers you have, the less wattage per speaker your AVR is producing. Keep in mind, your subwoofer is powered so it doesn't require any power from your AVR. The 2800H is only 5 watts more per speaker. It takes twice the wattage to achieve 3dB gain in volume. So it won't provide more power than your current AVR.

Technically an audio-video receiver is also an amplifier. It has the amplifier channels built in. These days we do usually mean separate pure power amplifiers when we say that but the receiver as a unit has the functionality of a surround sound processor (to deal with the surround sound information), a pre-amplifier and an amplifier. It also usually has a radio receiver, which is where the name came from, I believe. It's just all condensed into a single unit. So any home theater setup will have processor, pre-amp, amp and speakers. Somewhere. In some form.

I appreciate the recommendation Edward. As you can see, just because I have my end game set up doesn’t mean I still do not review other products like this 4800H and the Pioneer 505 that I recently reviewed. The truth is there are countless AVR’s, processors, speakers and subwoofers to review. But I definitely cannot review them all. My hesitation reviewing the MR1 is I have owned the UMC - 1, which was extremely buggy. I reviewed the flagship RMC-1, it was also extremely buggy with the main issue being no sound 1 out of 3 times I turned it on. And the only way to correct it was to completely unplug it, let it completely power down, plug it back in and boot it back up. Honestly, there’s no reason why a $4,000 (was $6,000 when I reviewed it) should have those issues. Looking back on Emotiva‘s track record, that has been a pretty consistent theme with much of their processors. So, unfortunately, I just don’t have much confidence in them and frankly, I’m not excited about the potential of reviewing another buggy product. With that said, 100% get behind their amplifiers. I believe that is exactly where they should focus their efforts on because that’s what they’re really good at.

@Youthman
@Youthman Год назад
I'm not suer why there are mixed views on the wattage. Unless they have the tools to be able to measure the wattage it's producing per channel (which I don't), the only thing we can go by is what Emotiva has on their website (see below). Power Output Per Channel; ONE channel driven: 160 watts RMS / channel @ 8 Ohms; 290 watts RMS / channel @ 4 Ohms; < 0.1% THD Power Output Per Channel; TWO channels driven: 160 watts RMS / channel @ 8 Ohms; 260 watts RMS / channel @ 4 Ohms; < 0.1% THD Power Output Per Channel; FIVE channels driven: 135 watts RMS / channel @ 8 Ohms; 190 watts RMS / channel @ 4 Ohms; < 0.1% THD Power Output Per Channel; ELEVEN channels driven: 100 watts RMS / channel @ 8 Ohms; 130 watts RMS / channel @ 4 Ohms; < 0.1% THD The 1ch driven spec is useless. The 2ch spec is not very valuable either if you are driving more than 2 speakers. I am glad to see they have posted specs for 5 and 11ch driven (something that I haven't seen on any other manufacturer's website). One thing that does concern me is the < 0.1%THD. In comparison, the Denon AVR-X4800H is rated at 0.05% THD into 8ohms. 5/100's vs 1/10th is a massive difference. How much of that can you hear, I'm not sure. But this might be one of those "You get what you pay for" products. I realize I would be able to provide an unbiased review, but unfortunately, I'm just not seeing anything about it that excites me to want to review it. I continue to recommend Denon and Marantz because I have owned and reviewed numerous models and they have all performed flawlessly. Unfortunately, I have not had the same experience with Emotiva processors.

This fails to answer the question properly. WHY do you need an AVR? Standalone devices are perfectly capable of producing sound. So you can have a PC, a media streamer, a game console, a BR player and so on that can connect to a TV and a small surround sound setup. The problem is when you try connecting them all you need a hub. It can be your TV and sometimes your BR player can also handle multiple sources. But it becomes a hassle of switching between sources. Adding more devices becomes a challenge. Its not impossible. But then there is the surround sound problem. These devices can handle small surround systems like soundbars or up to 5.1 surround. But if you want more and bigger speakers - you need an AVR to power them up. That's because instead of making multiple standalone devices capable of driving large surround sound systems, and making them all power hungry and expensive, you make one device capable of driving such systems and then you connect your devices to that AVR hub, and that is powering your speakers up to 11.2. surround. But why do you need an amplifier then? Sadly even the AVR devices can't handle more powerful surround systems with bigger speakers. If you try driving your big expensive surround speaker setup with an underpowered AVR only, you will get bad sound and you will eventually damage your speakers. The solution is to send the channels that will consume most power (like fronts) to an amplifier that will drive them and leave the rest to the AVR. But that's not where it ends. You can add even more devices that help run this growing tentacle beast of a system to get even better sound. Its all really just a money pit that traps audiofiles into spending more than reasonable ammounts of money.
@Youthman
@Youthman 7 месяцев назад
Actually, standalone devices are not capable of producing sound. If you have a bluray or 4K player. How are you going to connect your speakers to it? Same with an AppleTV 4K, Nvidia Shield etc. Unless you are connecting a soundbar, or an active pair of speakers, it's not really possible. As with any hobby, you can choose to dip your toes into the water and never leave the shore. For others, they want to swim out into the vast expanse of the ocean. It's all about choice. You can have an incredible experience in the shallow end or in the deep end. It simply is up to you to decide where you want to spend your time (and money). There's no "trap". It's simply a choice. Also, you can save a HUGE amount with buying quality used gear and speakers. Again, it's all about choice.

Yes exactly, he did a good job of explaining but still, I didn't get it. I posted this question on the video. @1Surinamer 56 seconden geleden It sounds logical but I still don't get it. So If I understand an AV receiver is only beneficial because of the number of speakers you can attach. It can improve the sound with all those effects like Dolby Atmos etc. And choosing sources is easier when you have a lot of devices because of the AV receiver. But video-wise an AV receiver doesn't do any magic when it comes to video quality right?! I'm so confused lol
@id104335409
@id104335409 6 месяцев назад
@@1Surinamer yes, to my understanding as well a receiver takes an audio video signal in, but only uses the audio signal. The video should only pass through. So why would you attach all your devices to a receiver? Maybe if you don't have enough HDMIs on your projector? TVs usually have enough to get you covered. And then you should just use 1 HDMI cable from the TV to the receiver to send the audio portion of whatever is playing right now. Doing it the other way around means connecting everything to your receiver and using 1 hDMI to send just the video to your TV/projector. But then you would have to use the receiver remote to control everything and to switch from one source to another. So I'm guessing this is the better option only for projector people. The receiver has to support the video bandwidth in this case. I suppose if you connect a 4k 120fs player to a 4k60fps receiver you will only be able to output 4k 60fps video to your screen. And this is why they always talk about it's video capabilities. But I don't think they are doing anything to the signal in terms of processing.

Happy I found this video because partly of this video and your answer I found out that I listen to music more than watching movies, plus I don't have other devices.
