Dave and Rebecca are both tattoo artists and both happen to experience ASMR. What is ASMR? Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response (ASMR), is a tingling sensation that typically begins on the scalp and moves down the back of the neck and upper spine. See - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ASMR. Dave says "sometimes it feels like water running down your spine; sometimes it feels like your scalp is tingling; sometimes you become incredibly relaxed. Rebecca says it creates an open, intimate and vulnerable space. Both say how it brings them to peace - which is what John says is purpose of meditation.
You can view Dave Stoke's Instagram page of amazing tattoos here - / davestokestattoo .
You can visit Rebecca DC's 'secret salon' here - shllws.com.

I came to this channel for the unintentional ASMR but it's come to mean so much more. For me, the joy is sharing a moment of peace with John, and to hear him discuss in a calm, unhurried fashion the truths he has come to understand. The ASMR experience puts you in a very receptive and open state, and it's a relationship of trust you build up with creators. I think perhaps ASMR is meditation on a basic, instinctive, primitive level - considering ideas without judgement or haste from a place deep within.

I served overseas in Iraq in 2007, and anytime I wasn’t able to fall asleep, I would have recordings of my favorite NPR broadcastings, that had individuals with voices similar to Mr. Butlers. In a combat zone, anything above 3-4 hours of sleep is a godsend, so being able to have moments where I was free to utilize the method I had no idea was even a thing, until around 2011 and beyond, was the one thing that allowed me to catch a deep sleep when I wasn’t in a dangerous area. My high blood pressure following service made it extremely uneasy every night to fall asleep, and when I was able to turn on asmr videos or watch Bob Ross, or specific great chefs of the world videos, the ASMR I felt allowed me to fall asleep in minutes, instead of remaining awake for 3-5 hours every night for 14 years. Sometimes my body just wasn’t ready to relax and I wasn’t able to feel it as strong, but sometimes when I found other unintentional asmr videos, I would just immediately fall asleep in mere seconds of watching. These types of videos always get me excited to go to bed instead of dread falling asleep, as it once was feeling impossible to fall asleep. God Bless you Mr. Butler, and others.

John has absolutely the same gentle and loving presence in real life as he does online. We were eating soup later that day, and he suddenly held my hand and said, 'it's all love! I've been listening to ASMR since 2013. What make's John's ASMR is great because it is unintentional. I also think that, aside from his soft-spoken demeanor, the focus he has on what he speaks of is a huge part of what draws us into relaxation and calm.

I love ASMR, I'll go out of my way to find tingles in real life every day, the clerk asking questions, turning book pages, placing items away in stock at the store, wrapping a package in brown paper and tieing it up with string, yes listing to an open fire at night while going to sleep (so nice), or just talking to people (I will even intentionally whisper to others and even ask them them to speak soft spoken or whisper at times). I have experienced since early grade school (at least what I can remember). I have tried to talk to others about it and haven't gotten very far in discussing it with most people and many people still have never heard of the ASMR movement (RU-vid, etc..)

I can tell you that John's voice is hypnotic...and I can see why an ASMR consumer would be interested in listening to him. However, his MESSAGE, if you truly listen, takes you far beyond tingles. A nice qualitative character to this setting is that its a conversation around a table, amongst friends, common seekers, at a home. Having not had this at all for 24 months, and not much for a couple years prior to that, it is long missed, and makes this video satisfying.

I've been a fan and member of ASMR since 1974 and I can tell you that John Butler will go down in history as one of the best... I would add that the British accent also helps... reality can be very troubling quiet often and there will always be legions of humans seeking out (the) voice of reason and compassion and usually that emanates from someone calming, like John Butler... fills me with tremendous joy to see so many others have also discovered John Butler... cheers and blessings... and thanks to Phillip and the others involved in bringing us this much needed content... please continue for as long as possible.

I don't even remember how I found ASMR. I think was coming up as a suggestion and some of the video pics were so odd, I wondered what the heck all this was about. I realized quickly that I grew up noticing these sensations. I found John because of the unintentional ASMR videos, only the first video I watched, needing a nap, I couldn't fall asleep because he was just too interesting! Then I began just watching his videos for the content themselves. I do nod off on occasion, but most of the time I come for his wisdom, his twinkle, and how, as Rebecca said, safe and relaxed I feel
@Lucatoire
@Lucatoire 2 года назад
I've experienced ASMR as far back as I can remember, but only with human voices, none of the tapping or anything else. I'd expect that if a person's neurology was being examined during experiencing ASMR cortisol levels would drop massively. I need ASMR to find peace, to decompress, to alleviate the anxieties and strains of the day or that moment. It definitely brings a deep peace and a feeling of wellbeing. It doesn't always make me fall asleep, sometimes it offers the equivalent of a deep breath that lifts off that weight. I think unintentional ASMR is widely appreciated because it's unscripted. There is ASMR I enjoy with a strong theme or purpose, but the person speaking has not planned what they'll say, they just enjoy speaking about it. I think having genuine joy or pleasure in the subject helps to enjoy the experience holistically. I appreciate John's subject matter as much as the ASMR because it's spiritually peaceful and filled with love. Often I'm unable to retain the information though because my brain is busy decompressing. It's the equivalent of having your forehead stroked by your mother when you're sick as a child in terms of how it feels. John's voice is the ASMR in this case, so whatever can maximise capturing the texture of John's voice it's perfect. Some background white noise like sounds are fine, but things that echo and are sudden are difficult. I know sometimes in the church people are packing away chairs or a heavy door slams and that brings us out of the moment once we're in that floaty fuzzy zone.

To me personally this was one of the most influential videos I have seen in a long time. Just an absolute bombardment of reflectable and philosophical thoughts concerning the phenomenon under the umbrella of ASMR. I really think this video could be one of the source materials for the future of ASMR research, that is sure to become a thing. I mean at least in the fields of psychology and medicine, maybe even history, biology, heck maybe even theology, who knows! I just wonder how these guys were able to stay awake when John hit them with one of his signature "mouth-smacking bombs" (just my little codeword for the way John Butler talks :) I also really like the producing aspect of these videos, because it is so well taken care of that future opportunities are taken into account. Falling asleep isn't the sole goal of ASMR. I think a case could be made that it should actually be able to keep someone awake, but relaxed, meaning ASMR is for the tingles, not inducing sleep. Yesterday, at Blue Cliff Monastery in NY, I had the most prolonged experience of ASMR "tingles" of my life. For most of the half hour long outdoor group walking meditation I felt tingling sensations all throughout my scalp and the back of my head. As I lost focus it would wane. As I quieted my thoughts it would return. This was by far my longest lasting "real life" (i e. not video induced) ASMR experience. I've recently read The Awakened Brain by Lisa Miller (highly recommend) and I wonder if any of the science she explores (regions of the brain activated during spiritual experiences, alpha waves, etc.) are in any way related.

I've never had tingles but I love ASMR regardless. I find it very relaxing. My first real experience with it was around 2003, when I had this math teacher who had a very soothing voice, and also loved to tell stories about his life. My classmates would try to bait these stories out of him because it meant less work. I thank them for it, for those warm Wednesday afternoons with him telling tales are a high point of my high school experience. Now, I suck at math. But that doesn't really bother me.

I get it now. How John and the others are describing the way that ASMR makes them feel is how music makes me feel. Calm, cared for, and soothed.

I think its fairly obvious that we all love it the way it is. I am a fan of ASMR, yes, but it's already included. I wouldn't want it to be the focus.

I love the reference to the Alexander Technique. Easily one of my favorite unintentional ASMR videos ever. The Old Lady and her bats are wonderful as well.

Honestly, I *would* say ASMR is all about coming to peace! Feeling safe and secure. It's like a warm, friendly embrace where you can just forget about your troubles. In that sense, John's message matches up with it very well. "It's about letting go".
@Kensho79

It's only natural that we respond somatically to John's voice, I think he has it right that the meditation over the years has led him to live in a state of peace and that permeates his being. He's able to transmit that through his voice simply because it's a natural extension of his state of being and we resonate with that through listening and attuning to him. With meditation, the initial stages, regardless of tradition, involve calming and stilling the mind/body through focusing on a single obect. Oftentimes it's not mentioned how key bodily relaxation is to acheiving this mental calm and collectedness. John's voice helps induce this and it does become a meditative experience of sorts - a type of samadhi. It's lovely to see how popular his message has become and I'd agree, it hints at our natural desire for such experiences and feelings. These are all things we have experienced from time to time throughout our lives, as mentioned in the video, and it's a golden thread worth following. Our modern society doesn't grant us much exposure to these things consistently which makes our continual returning to it and nurturing of it all the more worthwhile.

14:50 precisely the reason I objected on here in the past. Those background interruptions destroy the ambient connection and I'm so glad to hear you discussing them. Sound quality is super important in any content and especially in ASMR. Lovely conversation. 34:02 Yes. Thank you Phil.

I have been watching asmr for 9 years plus and found John through Asmr . The experience of asmr I have felt since I was a small child were the unintentional comes in like getting your hair brushed as a child the pages of books turning and growing up with the joy of painting. I'm a Atheist myself but I love the spiritual talks they calm me down when I'm anxious.

For me, it’s definitely about feeling safe and connected to someone. Having someone carefully and calmly explain something creates a profound sense of feeling that that person will be patient and kind, but also that you will totally understand something with no anxieties about being left behind because you don’t know something.

Learning via ASMR is the antithesis of youtube loud and fast delivery. Yes, lectures and lessons via ASMR is certainly a technique that I use. It's not for everyone, but neither is concentration.

I think that far from feeling bad that lots of people watch the videos looking for something else, John should and must feel happy and fullfilled. Its an amazing oportunity, no matter what the reason is people watch him, to keep spreading his word and experience! I am a case, of someone who started watching John because of how pleasant was the fact to just listen to him talk! But i have assimilated a lot of what he communicates, and every time a little bit more. Hes an example, and please keep up the task!! Big hug from 🇺🇾 Uruguay

🙏🌸 thank you, and also love the outdoor videos. I find that when a person/people walk by when John is speaking outdoors, it doesn’t take from the video because John calmly lets the viewer know, and he acknowledges the passer/s by. John then goes back into the conversation. My experience is that if I view the passer by as a distraction ( no disrespect intended) I can then view my thoughts as a distraction and come back to presence. Hope this makes sense

Thanks Sheila - it makes complete sense. And it is a great analogy for how to handle thoughts especially perhaps in meditation. But heck - why not all the time? Phil

I suspect that the original ASMR triggers were natural processes: like sitting by a fire in silence and hearing the wood crackle, the sound of a river flowing nearby or ocean waves crashing on beaches or cliffs or simply falling rain. Whispering and gentle speaking have a similar quality. I too came to this channel from the immensely popular unintentional ASMR video, but now I am getting so much more. Thank you! It is interesting to observe the dynamic of people not used to John’s paused speaking dynamic. There is a very human tendency to want to immediately fill the silence; they all recognized it even, and yet kept on doing it. :)

I find the pieces done outside when the sounds of nature manifest are most wonderful. The pieces in the church are lovely, with the neighborhood sounds coming in from outside. The construction sounds from inside the building are rather bothersome. Perhaps find a time when there aren't other activities going on in the building? The pieces done with groups of people and at home are also wonderful. "If it ain't broke, don't fix it." I love you, John Butler! Thank you for being willing to share the peace you've found with us ❤️ And, thank you, production folks, for delivering his message & making it possible for others to find The Stillness. Xoxoxo 🤗
