another scapegoat not mentioned for "Brainrot" is comic books. When pseudoscience and misinformation was being passed that comics where causing children to become violent criminals or just mind-addled nobodies because all you did was look at "dumb" comics. Video Games is also something that I had to deal with as my parents considered it to rot my brain. I still deal with it when my dad talks to me and he still things it's a waste of time, but he'll talk to me about all of his tv shows. Every generation has something that makes the other just shake their head and call it mind rotting.

@ruinhem

Works of high literature, however, are the key to mental development. Reading comic books is not. And the time children spend playing video games might as well be called damaging for all the reading they're thus not able to do. Sure, being well-developed isn't exactly the norm, but if we are to move anywhere we will have to set higher standards.

I feel like it used to be both better and worse during the 90s and 2000s back when the Internet was in its Wild West days. It was arguably the best of times and the worst of times all at the same time. More importantly, it used to be far more natural or "human" compared to now when so much stuff is AI generated and pushed by algorithms. We went from most people making stuff for fun and a few making stuff by following others to most people making stuff by following others and a few people making stuff for fun.

I do think there is a difference in modern generations compared to previous generations. Brain-rot is being produced at an accelerating rate, and it is becoming harder to find things that aren't brain rot; and harder to tell the difference between art and things just designed to grab your attention unless you know where to look. I think we should guide our kids to be able to identify brain-rot; so they can build a resistance to malicious content like Loot-boxes.

@enderspider5001

I feel like that the problem now is that these kinds of videos are too main stream. YTPs were a niche thing. There were few of them and it took the person making them a lot of time and effort to do such heavily edited videos. Doing these as a hacky way to get a quick buck wasn’t really a thing as well. Nowadays people have uncovered just how addictive these videos can be and started to gamefy the whole process. Fine tuning videos and finding the perfect formula for the most addictive video possible to then just rinse and repeat that same formula as many times as possible. I feel like it’s quite different from what novels/tv shows/old yt vids did. Those took a lot of time and effort even if the final product wasn’t that intellectually engaging. But we all could still appreciate the effort that was put into it and have a laugh at the stupid nonsense. Because at the end of the day, the authors were still trying to make something entertaining. Nowadays, they want to make something attention grabbing and addictive, not entertaining per say. Its quite different and this new kind of media is an actual problem imo

Thank you so much for the argument for gen alpha. I'm younger gen-z, but it's completely stupid gen a gets all the blame and hate, considering that we have literally gone through similar stuff like the vine era, then musicaly, before those it was RU-vid with the random stuff, before that it was weird memes etc. etc. It is to be expected honestly, gen z are now entering the labour pool, or are in /going into higher education, this combined with the fact that the pandemic happened 4 years ago and all the tension regarding ai taking over jobs, plus general geopolitical tensions (several large scale wars/conflicts) makes it kind of understandable why people are concerned for their posterity, since companies are seemingly less human friendly than ever (Ai replacements, bad pay, longer hours what have you) and more controlling. I personally didn't think it would happen this fast, but the oldest of gen z are in their late 20's and some have children of their own at this point. But in conclusion, this is one of your best videos, hands down. But it really is hard, you keep upping yourself with every consecutive video. But thank you. This was a great watch. ❤

When I was a kid, I had an unhealthy tv addiction, watching endless reruns long after i stopped enjoying them. Then in my early teens it was youtube AMVs. It's not so much a generational thing as much as it's about growing up and gaining the wisdom and the awareness that your time is being wasted and there are endless more meaningful and edifying things you can do instead that are much more rewarding in the long run. I'm doing better now, though I won't download tiktok or instagram out of fear of going back. My days are full of learning and meaning and I occasionally still enjoy some dumb humor without letting it consume my whole day. I hope everyone who struggles with addiction now will find the strength to break free of the dopamine cycle and find something that gives them true fulfullment as well

@@ElPeloXD I'm not making a value judgement of dumb humor, I don't think humor from when I was a teen is somehow superior to what kids enjoy now, nor is there any "moral failure" in enjoying the "wrong" kind of dumb humor. It's when you consume it more out of impulse than out of genuine enjoyment that it wears you down and wastes your life away. Every generation was guilty of being hooked on something, but we can all find our way out if we look for it. The kids will figure it out, given time.

It usually helps to calm me down

The ability to self-reflect on your behavior and question it, is a valuable skill that should be taught to kids in school. I hypothesise this is because self-reflective outlook is problematic for building a controllable and reliable workforce. If people are taught to question their behaviour it might have unintended consequences like workers realising they're being abused by their corporarte overlords. Remember, the addictive nature of social media is designed like that on purpose so tech companies can make as much much money out of a single user as possible.

Unfortunately, it’s a constant loop of every generation criticising the newer ones. It won’t be long until Generation Alpha will say that the newer kids are “Doomed”. People said that Generation Z was doomed, now the latter is saying that Generation Alpha is doomed. I’ve never seen a child people on the internet describe as a “Brainrotted Child” in public before. Hell, the only slang I’ve ever heard is on the internet. The truth is, Generation Alpha is not doomed. Every previous generation had said that the newer generation is “doomed”, and sadly, it will never stop.

True, but there are two very important distinctions, For one, a lot of fictional stories may not have been as informative as nonfiction, however they still often had lessons and cautionary tales, which could help the reader become a better person and learn from the mistakes of the characters. Another thing to note is that even if both fictional books and instant gratification shorts have technically been classified as brain rot, the degree of brain rot is quite different. For example, last year, my freshman class and I (9th grade) had to read romeo and Juliet. Problem was, we couldn’t, the vocabulary has just to high for us to understand or pronounce! Our english teacher who is probably in his fourties’ could understand stand it just fine. But he was frustrated whenever he had to dumb it down for us. He had to find a modern translation so we could understand. This is important because If you give the new generations old novels, we can’t understand, however, if you have the really old generations family guy, asmr, subway surfer type content, although would not completely understand what they are watching obviously, They can still see it, because those videos are easy for anyone to see. However novels are not easy for any generation to read. Meaning, skibidi toilet does not equal a novel. We are cycling through our habits every generation, how ever our habits are gradually becoming more and more close to actual brain rot.

You are not wrong, but there are differents between the worlds of the different generations. one generation saying "the new music i trash" is most likely because there are new genres and artists which have less in common with the olders generations music. So for them it sounds awful. Its like new technology which shapes the generation and is much more acknowledged by the youth/new generation. BUT the difference is, genres don't destroy your mental health (yeah yeah, insert joke about trash music here). Also it wasnt addicting. Also it didnt encourage harassment. after all music brought people together. new machines and technology made jobs easier and economy more productive. Maybe old people dont like digitalism as much as the younger, but there is no doubt it improved our lifes. With social media its a other thing. Its a technology which was maybe intended for a good use, but we now, it is not good for us, the companies manipulate us to use their software, they even put addicting mechanism in there. Peoples health deteriorates... Its like the younger generation was given crck and they didnt know it and now its too late... and i am not saying that because i dislike the new generations. I like them more because i have a feeling humanity is slowly realising how they fd up, but i truly thing they have it much harder and have much more problems than previous generations and a big reason is social media and no value content...
@ratspew932

@@MissNicolitaidk if it's comparable but I also can't understand half the tiktoks my younger sister (15) is watching. Like a lot of the times if she's showing me something I would go "what is she saying? what is the joke here? why is this on screen??". Over time I began to understand the general flow of modern stuff better but there's like new memes and trends every week so it's still hard for me. So the generational language barrier goes both ways, however Romeo and Juliet has a lot of messages you can think about and beautiful language you can take up and learn to write stuff better, so there's benefits in understanding Shakespearean English I think. However I don't feel like I was losing on stuff before I knew what's the deal with 3D dancing wolf.

Some Tiktok and RU-vid Short are actually brain rot, like subway surfers, anti stress, family guy, and even cartoons. They are 4 young cousin having watching kids fun, but something yapping happens. Btw, i was therapy to make stop brainrot.

First context I heard brainrot in was about how you like a character or show so much. I'm talking like, liking a My Little Pony character so much you just can't stop thinking about them. It's that kind of context that I use brainrot for.

I love your work and as always perfect description of the recent phenomena with comparisons with previously ones, like reading and watching TV in this video. I am very appreciative of how you show your sources and books, it gives a little more depth to your analysis and weight to your opinions. But I just can't agree that reading for pleasure can be comparable, since the former increases literacy and attention and the latter destroys your brain. I think the comparison is a little bit unfair, just for the sake of not judging new generations for the consumption of this type of content, as the older generations have judged us before. Nowadays, we are literally with screens on our faces consuming fast-paced content mathematically calculated to stimulate our brains in certain ways to consume more and more...

The main difference between old gen z vs young genz /alpha is the amount of short form content and low quality and with AI catching up its going to be 100% worse i think thats the real issue with attention spans. But also parents have been doing this for generations blaming media and games and music and flims and not actually raising their kids so as they say history repeats its self.

What I actually like is the wave of self-awareness that's starting to crop up with Zoomers. Usually it's just "Younger generation sucks." and we move on, but sometimes Gen Z just looks back at pre-2018 RU-vid and realises that what we were watching was equally dumb. I mean, the first type of video to be considered big with gen Alpha is minute-long Gmod videos. You know who else watched minute-long Gmod videos as kids? Us! And it's not even new, it's just a reinvention of the Punch and Judy show.

Discussion starter: It's true that modern "brainrot" content isn't necessarily any more stupid or mentally degrading than early 2010s internet memes, or TV shows, or books, but there is the aspect of money to consider. Some people argue that Skibidi Toilet is different in that it was likely made with targeting little kids in mind, looking for monetary gain and watch time. That may not be something that translates so easily to GMod memes from 15ish years ago, where due to the fact that RU-vid was still an emerging platform, those memes couldn't really be conceived with as much personal gain in mind. What do y'all think of this?
@mcarrowtime7095
@mcarrowtime7095 5 месяцев назад
The guy who made skibidi toilet was one of the guys making SFM gmod memes all that time ago, so you can’t really argue it’s changed And even if it was done for monetary gain rather than due to the brain rot of the creators, how does that change the effects it has on kids?
@Pnod666
@Pnod666 5 месяцев назад
1. Ah, fair enough, I didn't know that. Still, it's something worth keeping in mind. Eventually, one of these trends is gonna be started by somebody who can't really say they've got a history like that. 2. Does it matter? ... Yes and no. Whether or not the content is made for the "art" or for the money doesn't make a difference on the kids. But it does matter how much of the content there is, and you can bet that if it's for the money, there will be more content.

I feel like thats less to do with the actual content and more to do with happenstance. You said it yourself that you werent able to monotize or at least not as easily back then. Do you think those creators at the time would have made money if those systems existed. Maybe. Maybe not. I feel like conversations about this seem to revolve around kids cause they are easy punching bags but rather things like capitalism or consumerism, the need to monotize or things or only valued by how much they make. "Skibiti Toilet" is honestly the same shit we grew up with. Lets be honest with our selfs without the self cringing or nostalgia glasses. The issue was always there but since the internet grew rapidly the passed 20 years, its way more obvious. Just like in real life with other issues. The internet isnt the wild west anymore, its the main attraction.

What worries me the most about tiktok and shorts is that it genuinely hacks your brain to the point where a lot of people really struggle to get off the platform and live their lives, and kids growing up with that are going to end uo with unbelievably low attention spans which can genuinely become a developmental problem for them. I've seen people scrolling tiktok while driving their cars. Shits getting wild.
@zenixkiryu
@zenixkiryu 4 месяца назад
This is true. My friend has a severe addiction to TikTok and would often start scrolling it while we were supposed to be chatting and gaming together, and he'd spend hours on it throughout the day in full. He literally could never manage to sit still and watch longform content afterwards while also making random ass references. He's only 2 years younger than me too. I fear for the childrem who are growing up with this stuff being a normal part of their lives, especially if it's so prevalent during their developmental years.

I can feel the brain cells disappearing
@Ivy-Plays
@Ivy-Plays Месяц назад
It's literally natural. What is true is you can have 1,000,000 brain cells die every year. People saying that "their braincells are dissappearing" are undergoing what is called "the placebo effect." "The placebo effect" is a medical term when via drug testing, two people are handed a drug in testing. One is real, and the other is fake, as a fake drug that does nothing is called a placebo (as said). Both the two patients AND the testing scientists *do not* know what one of the 2 individual drugs given is a placebo. One would feel better, whilst the other would feel better, only thinking they are better just because they've taken the drug, while that drug they've consumed is actually a placebo. This is called "the placebo effect". The brain, in fact, loses braincells. Because some die, they (possibly) can then be renewed. We humans "think" we're losing braincells because we've watched some trashy "brainrot", whilst actually we aren't. We ourselves can die of too much screen time. I've heard on the news months ago that people that spend more time on social media are more likely to vape. Some get violent seizures. Some can go blind, or get brain tumours, which can cause brain cancer. My friend, look. Too much screentime is lethal and can cause life-changing effects. We, as humans, are purposely making our next generations stupid so we can be more dependent on AI. We are not going to be able to survive if we do this much longer. Please. We need to be strong. We need to survive. We are NOT bowing down to AI or brainrot. Ever.

I don't like that this is being compared to what past generations did, because the circumstances are very different. VERY different. Here is a list of those: - There is no patience in current brainrot content. Before, you might see a small child watching a 20 minute Monster School video or story, and not just avoid all of the slower parts. - For all kinds of popular media before modern brainrot, you could choose what you want to watch at will, and you would pretty much always get what you asked for. Modern brainrot can be an amalgamation of 8 videos playing at once, which isn't at all something that you can voluntarily choose to watch, since 7 other videos are trying to grab your attention at once. - Almost all brainrot content is controlled by a single platform, which barely cares about its users more than being a form of ad revenue. Other companies might feel the same way about their users, but every Ipad kid is essentially being used by that single platform as a money printer. This is why the content is targeted toward that audience. - People are being given social media and internet access at a younger age than ever before. And it is NOT healthy, at all. Instead of toddlers learning basic motor skills and how to think, they are bombarded with targeted brain rot. - There are no valuable lessons to be learned from brainrot content. Books had morals and a story, TV had morals and a story, heck, even media that gen Z was known to watch in early childhood had morals and a story. Brainrot content has neither of those: you watch a funny clip, next. Next. Next. No knowledge is gained from the process. - The platforms that host brainrot content are often rife with misinformation. With the sheer amount of exposure young children have to this, it outweighs any kind of deception present in previous popular media.

This requires the viewer to watch informative content, which is not necessarily associated with "brainrot" content. But I myself (zoomer) have learned weird and unusual information through short form content, and have it come useful later on, you definitely have a point here. Whether content creators can fit a entire trigonometry course into short form video is a different question, which is why i think that the quality or in depth knowledge obtained through short form videos is limited
