Slide 2: Core vocabulary
This is important!
Definition: Core vocabulary is a small set of simple words, in any language, that are used frequently and across contexts (Cross, Baker, Klotz & Badman, 1997).
Slide 3: Core vocabulary is 80% of what we communicate. Can be used in different contexts. Is a small set of words.
Slide 4: Fringe vocabulary
Definition: Fringe vocabulary is more situation specific. Their importance change from context to context and from person to person (e.g., evaporation, museum, funny, etc.).
Slide 5: Let’s talk about some examples!
Slide 6: Let’s make some sentences. How many words are core words?
I like to eat candy.
Slide 7: How many words are core words in this sentence?
I need help please.
Slide 8: How many words are core words in this sentence? Which word is fringe?
He is thirsty for juice.
Slide 9: We communicate best when using core and fringe vocabulary!
Slide 10: That’s why we have to model both core and fringe!
Slide 11: When we communicate with just fringe vocabulary we can’t make sentences!

Boy: Can I go outside?
Girl: It is sunny outside!

Boy: tree!
Girl: I don’t understand!?????????

Boy: Yes! I like trees
Girl: I want to climb the tree outside!
Slide 15:
Boy: red
Girl: I don’t understand!?????????
Red ball? Red shirt?
Slide 16:
Boy: Can I have the red candy?
Girl: Yes, it is time for red candy.
Slide 17: I feel so happy when I am understood!
Slide 18: When I learn core and fringe, I can communicate better!
Slide 19:
Boy: I am happy today.
Girl: I am happy too!

I would like to ask that you please make this and others you make accessible to people who are blind and visually impaired by having everything on the screen read out loud and for Deaf and hearing impaired people by having things that are not written closed captioned. There are AAC users and those who support AAC users who are Deaf, hearing impaired and blind and visually impaired who would love to learn from your videos. Thank you very much.
