What Is Dupuytren's Contracture? A Basic Introduction...

I have severe Dupuytren's Contracture in both hands, as well as Ledderhose Disease in my feet, which is the same Disease just named after a different Doctor. I am going in next month for my 6th Surgery, this time the right hand. I've had the full Palmer Fasciectomy surgery many times, and it's not that bad. Most people don't know that there is much more involved with DD. Nodules, Puckering, Knuckle pads, Nerve pain, twisting of fingers, etc. DD can also affect all the fingers, as well as the thumbs, which it is doing in my case. I am 49 and have had it for years, which cost me my Landscape Career. Surgeon's can only do so many surgeries on the hand before they can do no more, due to permanent nerve damage. I have permanent numbness with my hands that I will never get back. It's more rare in women, but women DO get it, so keep watch of your hands if your dad has it. My Mother had it and her fingers fully contracted tightly into the palm of her hands because she feared surgery to get it fixed. I am one of 100 people in the US who has donated blood samples to the National Dupuytren's Society (Founder: Charles Eaton of Florida), to hopefully find a cure through blood tests, where they examine the Bio Markers of the blood received. I had hand surgery and had use of my hand after 4 to six weeks. I had the injection process, on my other hand, and it took six months😮 along w/therapy before I had good use of my hand. From my perspective, the surgery resulted in the better use of that hand versus the other. Unfortunately, I am now experiencing hard lumps in my palm and fingers, and it is only a matter time before the process repeats.

You provided lots of good information and options for those of us with Dupuytren’s Contracture. I appreciate the easy to understand comments you provided.

Just recently we got a patient come in s/p Dupuytren's contracture release, and this video certainly helped put more perspective into what i'm working with!

great video, i had bilateral carpal tunnel surgery in June, i am now developing these bumps, is having carpal tunnel surgery related to Dupuytren, and yes my doctor said it's a sign of dupuytrens, and just to watch it.

I have a very mild case, no one else in my family has it. We are of British and Finnish background. The other name for it is the Viking disease. I had the surgery a few years ago and my surgeon who is also also a board certified plastic surgeon did the surgery and you cannot see the tiny scar. I recommend the surgery. 🇨🇦

Thank you for this very helpful info. I have only just noticed a somewhat painful lump in my left palm and a little of the cord. I am a violinist and the prospect of losing function is extremely upsetting. So I want to get out ahead of it and do what I can to maintain function for as long as I can.

Recently I was traveling to the US.....I started to notice a very sore bump on my right hand ......just over a good inch below my third finger......just like I had a deep splinter in that area....I went on line and it fit "Dupuytren's"......I was very disapointed in what the analysis was being said about it.....then my intuition told me to use a "red lamp" for 15 minutes a day......then massage the area with tea tree oil........now with about three weeks it has almost disapeared and no soreness.........also I have felt to really massage "deeply" the oil....and also to make sure the red lamp is "warm to hotly" felt........maybe this can help others.........God Bless

I have this on my hand and I know exactly how I got it, I was opening a tight lid on a jar and felt the nerve in my hand pull right away that was over a year ago, mine is more swollen than that picture and only hurts when I try opening tight jar lids again. I now use my right hand for that lol

I just had surgery on my left hand, surgery on my right coming up next month. I also looked up another similar symptom that I have had on my feet for many decades "Plantar Fibroma" Seems that a lot of Dupuytren's sufferers have the same issues.

I am 47 y/o female from Australia and I have dupuytrens so does my father. It’s slightly painful and is worse in my left hand than my right. I massage and stretch my hands daily and so far no contractures just nodules that get hot and itchy?

I broke my left wrist and had surgery 4 weeks ago, just noticed that hard nodule in center palm so this may explain what that is. PT appointment tomorrow so will ask. Thank you.

There are now, enzyme injections 2 treatments and it’s gone. They do them in Maryland.

Is it true that Dupuytren’s is common with people who suffer from. Diabetes.

One end of mine actually has a tunnel popped up from my palm. It had shown up all the sudden after a couple years of numbness and tingling in my palm.

I have had this formore than twenty years in my left hand/foot and have had the needle manipulation several times where they end with just straightening the finger in question. And if you get the habit of just straightening your finger/s it will buy some more time before next treatment. I have had open surgery as well on my pinky and that have worked well allthough there is a little damage to the nerve but nothing I notice other than in cold weather and if i use my hand alot. Luckely I heal well after surgery and they can do again on my pinky if need be. In my foot I had surgery once about ten years ago and it seems it has slowed down there which as far as I understand happens to some people. I have deviced something that keep my fingers straight when I sleep and so far it seems to have helped but it is hard to tell yet.The device ? Just a heavy stiff pillow that lay on my hand and stop my tendency to close my hand in my sleep. Oh and the treatments are quick without pain only thing you feel is when they sedate my hand/foot. which is minor compared to what the condition does to your daily life. Well made video that hopefully can eraticate the old belief that you had to live with it.

I had the surgery, left hand. It failed. So much scar tissue now, it's like wearing a leather glove. Loss of dexterity, hard to write my own name. In my early 70's now, nothing more can be done.

Hi I am recovering from my operation last Tuesday 5th December second time on little finger first time on ring finger.at the moment it's very painful some times. I have it in my left palm at 70 years old. It's not progressing rapidly.. I can still flatten my hand. I don't remember any family members having it. But I am of all N. Euro ancestry. Another blonde curse along with sun issues.

Hi, I'm female, with east African roots. In my early 30s. But I noticed a lump in April and almost 2 months later it is visibly larger, on the ring finger tendon (?), an inch or so below where the finger meets the palm. Does Dupuytren's grow that rapidly? When I put my palm flat on a table, the lump touches the table. It's only painful if I apply pressure around the edges. I'm a bit worried after googling it now!

I was supposed to have a simple cyst removed my palm and after the removal of the so called cyst the surgeon told me I have Dupuytens contracture now. Really upsetting because The surgeon should’ve known that I had this before he went in to remove anything from my hand. My hand was absolutely normal before this now I can’t bend my ring finger back. And it hurts every day

Thanks explains a lot...I recently had an accident of cutting tendon in middle finger and undergone surgery of joining tendon. Now I can't fold my middle finger and also my nerve is stiff and very thick...Is this dupuytrens contracture or can I relief from massaging the nerve? @forward therapy
