You guys are the greatest. I think I've been able to find answers to every one of my questions from your videos. I've got my materials on order and getting ready to encapsulate/insulate my crawlspace soon.

Special K, that's awesome! Would you be willing to send us some before/after pictures and possibly be interviewed by Michael for an upcoming video?

Thanks for your video. With all the rain we got this year, a lot of green stuff came over my entrance - concrete. I never seen it before. I was learning how to deal with that, when yesterday I noticed the white things, in formations? Today, were larger and I am like what in the world are there - is this white mold that makes geometric forms? Like mini-salt caves.. now it makes sense! Thanks!

Great video, thank you. I've been wondering if mold can grow under efflorescence on an unpainted foundation wall, it sounds like no since it's unpainted and there's no food. Now I just need to figure out how to lower the humidity in my basement (and nearby large crawl space) when it's usually under 60-65F here in Maine. I've tried a few dehumidifiers, work great in summer, not so much every other season when things cool down there.

Hey Chris, I know we say it a lot but we love the Aprilaire dehumdifiers. They can run in temperatures as low as 50 degrees F (or a dew point as low as 40 degrees F), so it should be able to help you more in the colder seasons. diy.crawlspaceninja.com/brands/aprilaire/

What about yellow efflorescence?
@CrawlSpaceNinja
@CrawlSpaceNinja 11 месяцев назад
We have not seen the yellow much but what I have read it is still a loose mineral salt that is carried in with the water that infiltrates the concrete, being deposited on the walls during the process. It is just picking up something that is making it yellow. Hope that helps, thanks for watching.

Hi I have these white powder looking things on my cement painted walls. Theyre kinda powdery, when I wash them off with water, it becomes the normal color of the wall, but it the white powder kinda reappears after a few minutes. Its not affecting the paint or anything, its just on it. I wanna know what Im dealing with here cause its literally my bedroom.

Hi! I would need more information but you may need to go ahead and get a mold test kit. Mold Test Kit will tell you if it is mold and what kind it is. If you would like to speak about anything else try a Ask a Ninja Form Here - crawlspaceninja.com/crawl-space-help-faq/

We have painted white basement walls with some orange stuff coming through and a few spots that are dark grey/black. Should I assume the dark spots are mold? What is the best solution to use on these to keep these areas under control? We have fixed the gutters, water runs away from the house and keep the humidity at 45% now.
@CrawlSpaceNinja

When we see that type of issue, it is assumed it is mold but the only way to be sure is to test it. Then removing the paint may be the best way to get rid of it (if it is mold). Usually that would involve grinding it off the concrete.

Great video! We are in a somewhat new home and have had crawl space water issues (what appears to be ground water coming up when it gets wet outside) bad enough to the point we had a disaster clean up company come dry it out. Question: is something like a crawl space that gets this wet at all the fault of the builder? Is there anything we or they should be doing to keep it more dry besides installing as many sump pumps as necessary? I really don't want pumps running year round just to fix an issue that may have been the builder's fault.

Unfortunately homes are being built on every terrain and the local municipality has guidelines for the builder to follow. I would contact local codes enforcement to see if something was not done properly. If the builder followed code and best practices, I don't think there is much that can be done to hold them accountable.

Michael I'm encapsulating my crawlspace and I've come to the vapor barrier portion. Currently my crawlspace has a loose lay "vapor barrier" and I will be replacing it with a 12mil taped and overlapped vapor barrier. Do I need to remove the old vapor barrier or can I place the new over the old? the old one is 2 years old and was placed right before we bought the home. Thank you for your time!
@CrawlSpaceNinja
@CrawlSpaceNinja 2 года назад
Hey Steve, we recommend removing it just to be sure there is no debris left under the old vapor barrier that could cause odors in the future. If you're sure there is nothing under there or it would be too difficult to remove, it would be okay to leave. Here is a video we did about this situation: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-hza5J2aOKhM.html
