Essential tremor is one of the most common movement disorders in the world, characterized by shaking hands, head, voice and even torso of the body. Though not life threatening, it can be life-debilitating, making every tasks a challenge. This video showcases some of the physical challenges and triggers. Special thanks to the Jerry Taylor and Nancy Bryant Foundation for their generous gift that helped make this video possible.

I am 30 years old, and have been shaking as far back as I can remember. Mostly in the hands, but when I get nervous, it’s everywhere. My whole body and my voice in this video is going to help me get diagnosed I appreciate it.

24 y/o here, just got diagnosed with this and I always thought my body was so weird when it started shaking whenever I would hold anything. Can’t even drink anything on the car while everyone else could, it was a very embarrassing experience. At first I kept thinking “wow is this Parkinson?” But my Neurologist laughed and told me I had this. I do get medicine for this and sometimes it helps.

I'm similar. I'm 23 and just got diagnosed. I'd been getting bursts of shaking for a few years and kept being told to not worry about it, it's probably just anxiety until I got diagnosed.

@@callum7842 do you get any medicine? My neurologist is trying some medicine with me its not as strong as I would want because I feel like it doesn’t completely take away my shaking but because Im young he doesn’t want to take away all my choices if it gets worst in the future 😅

Thank you so much for sharing this. I’ve been shaking from as long as I can remember. Growing up kids and some family members would joke and say why are you shaking but I was kid so it didn’t mean anything to me. As an adult I find myself not going places or doing things because mentally I think that’s all people see. About a year and a half ago I was officially diagnosed and I put on propranolol which I took for a little over a year upping the dose from 20mg to 40mg per day but I didn’t see any difference so I came off of it. I am 45 years old now and I have noticed progression over the years especially when I’m presented with a situation where stress is involved, public speaking or presentation etc. I’ve even limited myself career wise for this reason. I was told that this was mainly found in older people so I’m glad to see that your video illustrates this in younger people also.😊

Thank you for spreading awareness of the psychological issues that come with the tremors. I'm aware of my huge shame of going out because of it, and although I can speak freely with some friends and closest family, it's an usual topic during social events and family gatherings, which leaves with more anxiety and makes me shake even more

40 years old and I finally learn what I've had my whole life. Everyone always asks why I shake so much and I never knew and my doctors never diagnosed it but this has got to be it. I get it in my legs, hands, and arms but 90% of the time it's only about twice as bad as an average persons natural tremor. Does anyone else notice that it can get substantially worse when weight lifting - not all the time maybe 10% of the time? Feels like all your strength gets completely zapped and then intense tremors for the next few hours?

Yeah, had to quit all weight training about 5 years ago. I'd feel fine for a few hours after the session but later, or the next day I'd ceel so bad and tremors would be he'll. I actually used to think my shaking was because my neck must have been weak so trained it extra hard, had a massive neck but tremors was worse 😂

I signed up for this amazing surgery. 4 long months ct scan, mri, neuro assessment, complete med clearance labs, xrays, ekg all mixed with excitement and anxiety. 9 days before surgery, on the morning of hospital preop, neurosurgeon np called! Oops 4 mo ago my ctscan showed skull score and skull density ratio disqualified me!!!! What?? My sdr was 0.39. Must be 0.40. University medical school! Very 1st test was ctscan - all other tests and additional 3 months not necessary! But moving on. Have started botox injections and so far happy. The upside is it treats both hands and my chin.l although it’s ongoing and not permanent. The focus ultrasound is only 1 hand.

I first discovered I had tremors when I was in my early 30s. It for worse in my late 30s. My head would shake when stressed, angry, or nervous. I am now 53 and it has calmed down some, but still there. My head shakes and I don't even realize it until friends tell me that I am. My left hand used to shake pretty bad when holding a glass or water and stretching my arm outward. When I drink out of a large water bottle, for instance, and tilt my head back to guzzle, my head shakes bad. It was discovered 2 years ago that I have a massive calcium deposit where my lower neck meets my upper back. It's a knot there. I have been taking vitamin K2 and D3 in hope it will dissolve it over time, but won't know for a while. It is embarrassing. People think I have early signs of Parkinson's.

Same here, left arm, my employer used to think I was nervous which I do get like everyone but not all the time and unlike most I shake uncontrollably and the head too and the worst is you feel it and so are self conscious so over time I developed anxiety. I remember being nervous younger it never felt like this but soon as I put some weight on it all went down hill, I also have high blood pressure so always thought it was a combination of all of that. When I drink alcohol which I do almost never it goes away completely and I feel normal but then I think alcohol increases blood pressure so it can't be that. Funny story I had a bike accident a few years back and damaged my left hand so I ended up in hospital and the nurse was bandaging it and I had to hold it in a awkward position which made it act out worse and she must've thought I was nervous or scared because she said "you brave brave man" as she was wrapping it and as funny as that was it was worse than the accident. I had to explain what it was, she asked me if I saw the doctor about it and I tried but they just kept telling me to come back in two weeks because they thought it was a temp neurological thing and that went on for about 2 months until I didn't go back anymore. Have you had any luck with your vitamins?

My tremors affect my head at rest. They move my upper body. No tremors in arms, hands, legs, or feet. I move and the head tremor seems to disappear. @@EssentialTremorIETFI've decided when I die my brain goes to science.. If anything I hope that it helps us have a better understanding of it. It's quite minor now, but my dad has it real bad and I know it eventually leads to a really bad time in our final years. I think the biggest problem right now is there is not enough understanding of the disease, there are most likely multiple causes and once we learn more about it there will probably be a lot more terms and diseases classified that roll up to the ET umbrella. Afterall it's a symptom classification and not really the cause
