Generative art is art that has been wholly or partially produced by an autonomous system. In this talk, we will dive into the world of generative art including its history and philosophies, and demo the creation of our own generative art.
This is a non-technical talk. A general familiarity with programming will be helpful for following along with demos, but is not required. Stop by if you are curious about how non-human systems can be coerced into generating art, if you want to know why such an endeavor would be undertaken, or if you're simply in for watching pretty pictures manifested onto a big screen.
During this session, we will establish a baseline familiarity with the concept of generative art.
From its origins in the 1960s all the way to today, many innovations have occurred in the field. We'll discuss prominent generative artists and the contributions they have made to the discipline. Different artists have worked in different media from 2D to 3D visual art to musical compositions. Just as a traditional artist may use a brush or a marker, generative artists have their own set of tools to work with which we will examine.
We will touch on the differences, both pros and cons, between generative art and traditional art. I'll argue a few positions why you should incorporate the practice of generating art into your life.
Generative art is so easy to get started with that we can demo the creation of quite a few different pieces within a single DevCon session. We'll run some pre-written generations and create new pieces with audience input.
After attending this session, attendees will leave with knowledge of a new school of art, insight into how and why it is practiced, and an understanding of how to channel their own creativity into generative art.
