The electric two-wheeler industry in India has had a tough couple of weeks with reports of battery explosions rocking customer trust in its offerings. Fatalities have also been reported.
So what exactly has been going on?
Some blame it on poor technology. Others blame it on the heat. Why are we facing such incidents now, at a time when the EV industry seems not only ready to take off but also when EVs are expected to turbocharge our move away from fossil fuels.

This topic is really needed. I wanted to by an EV but after these cases, i dont trust any brand or this govt which is giving green signal to these companies without going through proper testing.

Aether EV is designed very well and has had vehicles in the market since 2018 without even 1 i cident of fire. It is because they have designed it with a lot of detail. Apart from BMS they have a passive cooling system which takes out heat even of the BMS fails or has fault. Look into Aether rather than be nervous about all EV startups. FYI i have no affiliation to Aether but this is based on my analysis of their design.

Tesla spent nearly a decade on R& D before they launched their cars and even now big companies like Toyota are hesitant to enter eV segment but in India, people think we could easily make e- vehicles with just factory alone.

Mr.Bharat Kumar has very good clarity in communication. The technical expert instead of focusing on causes of failures in vehicles using Lithium batteries was talking about other technologies.

for reliability a large number of vehicles need to be tested and under severe conditions

Incompetent producers are asked to produce safe batteries. But profit motive persuades them to ignore safety matters when it comes to battery safety. Now the Indian government has to establish standards by which the safety of these products is assured.

lithium batteries have fire seen even in mobile phones. we need to look at other batteries like aluminium air batteries. even tesla cars seems to fire accidents

Very good presentation. It is very important for EVs to have a quality batteries. All fire incedents can be attributed to poor quality of batteries. It is very important that proper process in manufacturing the batteries are to be strict in all the stages of production. Controls are important to manage the batteries. Controls should be of quality, as said by Mr.Gulati sourcing of different components from various suppliers without testing the integration. Lot of R&D need to be done for the batteries and integration of controls. These are not being done presently and everybody including Govt are in hurry to push without proper R&D and maintenance issues.

It is shameful deed that still Indian auto industry is heavily depending on Chinese batteries for their EVs. Either India has to develop its own batteries or depends elsewhere

High temperatures cause fire (end effect). The primary defect could be in BMS or Battery Quality. BMS (Battery Management System) is part of the battery pack. It is controls both charging and discharging of battery. Self heating (inside battery) could be bigger problem than ambient temperature. Fire accidents are reported all phases- during charging, running vehicle and stationary vehicles too. I guess there are multiple causes Price pressure and eagerness to be early to market might make players opt for untested [Battery + BMS] combo. Perhaps many players to not have knowledge and proven processes for type testing (including life and reliability) of Battery and BMS.

Even the best brands like TATA cannot be reliable at this stage. While we aim to ween off oil imports we also need to cutback on the import from China urgently. India has a lot of minerals, pretty sure some of them will prove to be good green revolution materials.

Probably a interview with a Professor who is knowledgeable on Li-ion batteries would have been better.
