What is Good Design? 

"Design is a function of Usability + Communication" is such a beautifully simple way to express what design actually is-sorry, but I'm definitely stealing it 😜

What about persistence? There are many UI systems, you can look some up on dribble or behance, that communicate the right values and are fairly usable, but I'd say that if a company like google adopted one of them, they'd have to change it very soon because it wouldn't fit they're products in the long run. One of the reasons material design is awesome is because it's consistent and the placing and functionality of elements generally operate the same throughout its sysem, even though google used it for almost each one of its products. The same thing applies to branding. When a company can apply the same style, like Apple does for instance, in every banner, website, advertisement and so on I'd consider it a good design. Consistency also makes a design last much longer, and it's very hard to create.

I think Design is not just usability + communication. We talk a lot of usability that we forget other aspects that make a good design. Aesthetics for exemple, plays a very important role in design and defines how users will perceive your design before they even use your product.
