I'm hakka, 4th gen originally from HK. Most Chinese in UK are hakka, as well as many in North America, West Indies, etc. Proud of my heirtage, especially food and dialect. We've many illustrious ancestors in Chinese history. And Keanu Reeves is also part Hakka (his grandma 100% Hakka)!

I used to live near holland village for over 10 years, sadly I never new there is a Hakka cemetery, I remember a temple near the end of holland village, that was at least 30 years ago. I wished I had visited that area during my recent travel ..

I'm hakka but my family is from Calcutta, India now living in Toronto! So interesting to see how hakka food has evolved around the world. I personally haven't had this dish and the hakka food I know is more indo-chinese, like chilli chicken, chicken pakora etc. Excited to visit Singapore one day to try this!

A correction:- Hakka is not an English word. There are 2 Hakka words there, ie. Hak = guest and Ka = family. Therefore a "family of guests". Historically Hakka were refugees from the north, escaping the slaughters by the mongols. They travelled down south in family units. That's why they are called that way by the southern locals.

Are Hokkien people ancestors of Hakka people?
@johnlay3040
@johnlay3040 2 года назад
@@Nicole-gb4ze No. The ancestors of Hakka are northern Chinese.
@zephure88

Correction. Refugees is defined as people that leave their country . Hakka relocated from northern China to southern China .. therefore hakka is NOT refugees but are ethnic han Chinese.

My paternal grandmother (RIP) is Hakka from Meixian & she just appeared in my dreams last night! LOL. Cantonese trick: you know you can peel ginger with just a tablespoon? (NOT Chinese soup spoon). Just scrape firmly & the skin will be off, no need to cut. What? Your mom went to the University of Minnesota? So did I! She must've froze her Singaporean butt off in this 60s or 70s!!!

Sarah, stop bullying your mom - especially when at times she appears to be daydreaming 🤭. But seriously, you two are a great duo! My background is rather similar to your mom's - i.e. I'm Hokkien on my father's side, and Hakka on my mother's side and I speak beside these two dialects fluently, Cantonese too on the basis that I grew up in a Cantonese community in Malaysia. Having said that, I've now been living in the UK for decades and can still speak all the Chinese dialects today. Can your mom remember the famous Hakka dish called, "Jar Nyuk" (translated loosely, 'fried meat' (pork)? BTW the nearest equivalent to "jialat" (Hokkien i.e. 'lee hai') I can think of, to Hakka is "lee hoi".

Refugees is defined as people that leave their own country to go to another country .. The Hakka are Han Chinese and relocated themselves within China itself because of war, famine etc they were from northern to settled in southern parts of China .. 广东、福建、广西、湖北、四川 、台湾 etc therefore Hakka are not refugees !
