I'm thrilled to present my new personalized vocal program SINGING IGNITION!
www.singingignition.com
SINGING IGNITION is a revolutionary self-study singing program that lets you practice techniques and exercises customized for you...wherever and whenever you want!
The basic problem with a video or audio recording, whether on RU-vid or a self-study course, is it can’t give you the valuable feedback you need! They can’t determine what your voice specifically needs, curate the exercises that will work for you, and then adjust the exercises according to how your voice reacts.
That’s what a good voice teacher does. They tailor the content of their lessons to your needs.
But maybe you aren’t ready to commit to regular lessons. Or maybe you just can’t afford a voice teacher right now. Times are tough!
So you're stuck either booking a voice teacher, which can get expensive and has limited hours. Or you are forced to use a self-study course that can’t really give you the feedback you need to excel...
...and maybe you just don't feel comfortable quite yet, sharing your talent with anyone else!
Finally, all of this has been solved by the revolutionary new system SINGING IGNITION!

Head voice is a useful tool for every singer to develop. Work on it until you can do purposefully, and then blend it with your chest to develop mixed voice, which is even more useful when singing songs. Here is more about mixed voice: 7 Minute Mix Voice Workout ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-IGoRueDvIvA.html

I was a little self conscious about having a really low vocal range, until I realized I barely even scratched what my head voice could do! I just had the time of my life playing around with these new notes I could reach over the past 2 hours and would definitely keep going but I don't want to to destroy my newly found instrument so soon. I'm 17 and I've only been singing for a few weeks and plan to continue for a long time to come. Thank you, I really do appreciate it. :)

That was the most accurate and easy to understand explanation I have ever heard of the differences between chest, head and falsetto voices. Moreover, you were able to demonstrate each of the "3" extremely well. I wish someone would have shown me how to find head voice 30 years ago. Turns out I only used chest and falsetto. I thought my upper chest voice was head voice and it clearly wasn't. The highest I could sing in chest voice was roughly Ab4, now in head voice I can sing up to Eb5. In falsetto I can reach G5. Thank you so much.

This video was incredibly informative and eye-opening. I used to sing and do screamed vocals in a band of mine. I was always just winging it, doing what felt right, or at least what didn't hurt me. I had a solid scream, but it took me years to even get close to being a decent singer. I never quite knew the exact definitions of all these words and phrases, until now... For the LONGEST time, I could ONLY sing with my head voice. I didn't know that's what it was called, but it always made my head hurt to sing and/or do the types of screams I was doing, and I heard the phrase "head voice," so I figured: that's gotta be my head voice. It took me so long to figure out the difference between using your head voice and belting. I'm still trying to figure out belting. Gonna go scour this channel for videos about belting.

Hi I’m a 15 year old boy and I can’t seem to open up my head voice. I try watching videos to see how to but I always end up in falsetto
@SpencerWelchVocalStudio
@SpencerWelchVocalStudio 4 года назад
Has your voice changed and if so, how long ago did your it change? Teenage boys often struggle with their upper voice for a while after it changes (from 6 months up to 2 years!) So be patient, keep stretching up into your upper register even if it's falsetto at first, and allow yourself to grow into your new instrument. Your vocal cords are up to 40% longer now than before, so it takes some time to adjust and re-learn how to sing.

Spencer Welch Vocal Studio I’m a 14 years old girl right now and I have the same problem which I can’t find my head voice and every time i sing high it turns into a falsetto, is it because of the voice change?
@SpencerWelchVocalStudio
@SpencerWelchVocalStudio 3 года назад
Sorry I didn't see your question until now. Remember that your vocal cords are just finishing developing all their layers at age 14. Also often teenage girls go through a transitional period in their larynx development where the vocal cords don't close completely in the back, resulting in a breathy sound. Be patient with your development, and meanwhile, try this workout to strengthen your upper range: Female Vocal Workout for Mixed Voice ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-7CeZesYIbEo.html

This is such a great video. 🙂 Unfortunately I had this weird thing happen recently where it seems I’ve lost my head voice, but I still have my falsetto. I can only hit high notes if I go into that light, breathy place. I can’t hit them with a clear, louder tone anymore. I hope I don’t have vocal damage or something. :(
@SpencerWelchVocalStudio
@SpencerWelchVocalStudio 4 года назад
Loss of high notes can sometimes mean something functional (you lost the coordination) or something structural (a vocal health issue affecting the actual folds or surrounding area.) I would go to a doctor and get a referral to an ENT to get checked out. An ENT scoping your vocal folds is the only way to really know what's going on there and then you can proceed from there.

Yes, it might means you need to stop trying to pull up your chest voice into your higher notes and give your head voice a chance to catch up. Are you a female singer? I might be able to recommend a video you could exercise along with.
@XxLuvroseXx
@XxLuvroseXx 3 года назад
Spencer Welch Vocal Studio yes I am a female. Also could it have anything to do with me being tongue tied? I’ve heard that being tongue tied can make it easier but it just seems like a pain hitting those high notes when trying to raise my tongue.
@SpencerWelchVocalStudio
@SpencerWelchVocalStudio 3 года назад
Luv Rose I don’t think that being tongue-tied would have an impact. Head voice is a coordination of the vocal cords, not the articulators like the tongue, lips, or soft palate. I have helped several students who were tongue-tied to develop their chest, mix and head voice; however, some eventually decided to have it cut in order to have more facility for enunciation. You might want to get personalized help from an experienced vocal coach. If you don’t have one, you can book a 20-min trial lesson at my studio here: Spencerwelch.com/Ko-trial-lesson You might want to try this video to see if it helps: Female Vocal Workout for Mixed Voice ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-7CeZesYIbEo.html

I've spent the past year or so bridging that connection between head voice and chest voice. I've been a singer, pianist and musician for 27 years so I know it IS possible to do it. I can now sings songs that, this time last year, I couldn't really sing. It's because I spent a lot of days strengthening the connection between head voice and chest voice. For me falsetto sounds different. Almost like COMPLETELY shutting off all connection to the chest. I never use falsetto unless I really REALLY have to and even then I don't like it.

When I was a kid I thought that my falsetto is actually my head voice So right now I have a really well developed falsetto It almost sounds like my head voice in comparison with power I'm 14 and also being pulled back by puberty I discovered my head voice 6 months ago and I can only go up to Eb5 I stopped for a while then suddenly I lost my head voice Then just recently I suddenly found out how to do it And now it's a better head voice now It can go up to G#5 to A5 ( F#5 is the most comfortable upper note ) However I still can't use my head voice to execute runs and riffs And also I can't sustain higher notes with it Should I just continue developing it?
@SpencerWelchVocalStudio
@SpencerWelchVocalStudio 4 года назад
Yes, keep developing your head voice and be patient. After your voice changes, it can take months to years for your voice to fully settle into your "man's" voice. You should also begin doing some exercises to connect your head voice to your chest voice so you can get a smoother passage between them. Here are some videos to check out: Finding Your Mix Voice ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-DzXkKKPPQ1k.html 7 Minute Mix Voice Workout ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-IGoRueDvIvA.html How to Erase Your Vocal Break ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-I_w549666r0.html

Hi, Mr Welch thank you for your video!!! My voice has this problem of only having air comes out whenever i try to hit a note with my head voice (or even falsetto). it feels like i don't have a head register to sing with... I can rarely hit a note in my falsetto only when my voice is relaxed and moisturised (it sounds like falsetto to me as it is really breathy and hollow, and this mostly happens when i am taking a bath). Even with that, it is really hard to control and it cracks really easily. I am 22 now and i remember that i could use my head register before my puberty and it seems like i have lost it after. I'm not a professional singer but i really love singing and i want to learn the right way to do so. I don't really feel any discomfort when i speak... Do you think this is some kind of vocal fatigue or do you think i have only lost the coordination to do that? Thank you!!!
@SpencerWelchVocalStudio
@SpencerWelchVocalStudio 4 года назад
Thanks for your question. It's difficult to say why this is happening in your voice without working with you in a lesson. In some cases, a person's lack of familiarity with head voice and falsetto is the reason why it seems to elude them. However, for others, their falsetto has disappeared because of vocal damage, extreme fatigue, or other health factors like reflux or allergies. I suggest you start by working an experienced voice teacher or speech language pathologist to see if they are able to get you into a head voice/falsetto coordination with the right exercises. If they suggest the problem may be health related, you may need to see an ENT doctor. If you don't have a singing teacher to work with, my studio offers a trial Skype lesson: spencerwelch.com/ko-trial-lesson

Yes, I've taught many students that struggle with that. I'd have to hear you and work with you in a lesson to know what you should do. Have you tried starting high and descending rather than singing over scales that start low and ascend? Try starting high enough so that you can't pull up your chest voice/speaking voice to the note.

@SpencerWelchVocalStudio
@SpencerWelchVocalStudio 4 года назад
There isn't a standard definition for these voice qualities in voice teaching. If a man sings a strong, easy A4, some teachers will call that a mix voice and some will call it head voice (voce di testa piena -- full head voice --- is what the Old Italian School called it historically.) For me, I usually give the name "mix voice" to the high middle area that still has chest presence (probably E4-G4 in your voice) and "head voice" to the upper region above that (probably Ab4-C5 or higher.) Mix voice is heavier than head voice but lighter than chest voice. It's not an exact science, but these terms can be useful in a lesson for a student once they have the option to sing higher notes more lightly or more intensely.

How would one tell if they are achieving vibrato while singing high notes? Sometimes, I feel like the vibration in the larynx just goes away when going up in pitch, which my be related to my further dropping of the jaw to go higher in the first place. Any pointers?
@SpencerWelchVocalStudio
@SpencerWelchVocalStudio 3 года назад
Probably the best way is to record yourself and listen back. Do you hear a quiver in the pitch, moving up and down about 5-7 times per second? Then you are singing with vibrato.

And this honesly confuses the hell out of me because there are other higher keys I can hit. I feel it's a mix of inexperience and incorrect positioning. Any feedback?
@SpencerWelchVocalStudio
@SpencerWelchVocalStudio 4 года назад
Hi Jessica, without listening to you and working with you, it's impossible for me to know for sure why you're struggling with this note. There could be multiple reasons, so the best I can do is make an educated guess. I'm assuming you're talking about the word "me" in the lyric "can you show me?" The acoustic properties of an EE vowel (like in "me") can easily encourage a light head voice as I demonstrate in this video. But it is not a vowel that facilitates a stronger mix or belt. You would have to drop your jaw, opening the vowel toward an IH like the word "in." I would try that to see if it helps. If you don't already have a vocal coach, you're always welcome to book a Skype lesson with me to get personalized guidance.

Spencer, as what I know,Bel canto use chest voice, and don't used head voice? Am I right?
@SpencerWelchVocalStudio
@SpencerWelchVocalStudio 4 года назад
Well, first there is not one "Bel Canto" technique today. Many teachers claim they are teaching "Bel Canto" today, but with very different (often contradictory) teaching styles and techniques. "Bel Canto" means "beautiful singing" in Italian. It is the style of operatic singing that emerged from the teachings of the Old Italian School of Singing in the 18th and 19th centuries. Several Italian teachers wrote treatises about how to teach "beautiful singing." No, they did not teach only chest voice. Traditionally, they taught chest voice AND head voice connected together by a "passaggio." Perhaps, you are confusing "head voice" with "falsetto" which some Old Italian teachers used as a voice-building technique, but very few encouraged as a usable voice quality on stage. To this day, falsetto is not an acceptable sound in opera unless it is used by a countertenor in a highly developed way, sometimes called "falsetone."

Confused about a closed vowel and not aw or uh if you’re trying to send air up in to your heard?
@SpencerWelchVocalStudio
@SpencerWelchVocalStudio 3 года назад
Ah I can see how you might be confused by that. Keep in mind that we aren't trying to send air up to our head. If you succeeded at that, it would mean your skull was empty 😉 So air can't go there; neither can your head resonate your voice in a way that meaningfully adds to your sound. Whether you are singing in head voice or chest voice. the air being set into vibration is in your vocal tract, the space formed by your mouth and throat. When sound waves in the vocal tract have a lower frequency and a "buzzier" sound similar the speaking voice, many people tend to feel more sympathetic vibrations in their chest. Open vowels tend to shape the spectral energy of your voice to create that result. On the other hand, when sound waves in the vocal tract are higher in frequency and "darker" in tone (similar to an OO close vowel) many people tend to feel sympathetic vibrations less in the chest and more in the head. Ultimately, sensation is subjective, so there is some variation in what people report feeling.

If you are newer to some of these coordinations and techniques, you may not have the awareness yet of what head voice sounds and feels like vs something else like belting or falsetto. Your profile pic suggests you are male, so check what your voice feels like as you sing an ascending scale from D4 to A4 on an OH vowel. If you sing these notes in tune without getting louder and without widening/opening your mouth toward AH, you most likely are moving toward head voice. If you increase volume and/or your vowel opens toward a brighter AH-ish vowel on the higher notes, then you may be moving into a belt. On the other hand, if you continue to sing a pure OH vowel without increasing volume, and yet your voice keeps some fullness and body as you move toward head voice, then you may be singing in a MIX voice first before you get to pure head voice at the G4 or A4. You can learn more about mix voice here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-DzXkKKPPQ1k.html

Hello, when I increase my closure while doing falsetto, it can get really loud and bright, almost like a cat. I can also feel a little flip as I increase closure. At that point, am I already in my head voice? Whenever I'm doing sliding exercises while doing this bright sound, my voice still flips to chest voice, usually with an almost an octave gap, which is different from how you described head voice. Actually, at my best, i could support A5 with resonance by using head voice. I just do it accidentally and sustain it for 2 secs. The huge difference is head voice are naturally louder. All start when i sing A5's falsetto and A5 head voice near the window with mouth covered with towel. The falsetto one is actually dreadful and not echo while when i use head voice, it's ringing on top of my bare face along with the resonance echoing near the window with powerful overtones. It's been a long time i not using my head voice and recently it just get so powerful (i sang those A5's a year ago. I might hit that rare a5 in pure head voice becuz i howl mix A5s too much, which results in that head voice). Aside of this old story, i actually supports Bb5 on peak when that day, i just practice register transition by phrase scaling which easy for me to identify the odd. Between that notes, i maybe support the middle one tho but not the rest of them. (i can't remember. I often covered my mouth with soft and thick things lol) However, i only consistent with C5 or below that. That's all i could say for your my pleasure just now lol

Thanks for subscribing! Unfortunately, I can't say what might help you without hearing you and working with you. There are several possible reasons why you might be experiencing this. My best guess is that your voice has gone through its change into a man's voice as you go through puberty. Every teenage boy goes through this, where your voice gets suddenly much deeper, and you lose your upper range. Your voice may feel very hard to control with a big break into falsetto in the middle for six month up to two years. It is worthwhile doing exercises to build up your head voice, but you also have to be patient as your physical voice settles into this new size as a man's voice. You might want to try this video to see if it helps, even if it means that you continue to feel like the top notes are falsetto: Male Vocal Workout for Head Voice ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-1k20kiqRL9k.html

How to give that "pulled chest sound" to my head voice?
@SpencerWelchVocalStudio
@SpencerWelchVocalStudio 4 года назад
There is a way to make mix voice sound very chesty. This would be similar to belting mix or head voice. However, this is very advanced, and in my experience, most students who try to teach themselves how to do this just start pulling chest or at the very least "pushing" a very heavy mix that wears their voice out. So first, you need to develop a balanced mix voice at a medium volume where you don't NEED to get louder to sing the pitch. Then you should find an experienced, certified voice teacher to show you how to use resonance and more adduction to build up to louder dynamics. A good teacher can monitor your experimentation to make sure you are on the right track and not falling back into harmful habits.
