I have to agree with this...actually getting through the bridge was in the end far easier than I thought it would be...in fact when I first did it I wasn't even sure if I had done it!!...the key is basically not to push so much and keep the sound the same and don't panic and once you can successfully bridge you can then add more power and the chords stay together more n more (thanks Carl!)...I am still practicing and its slowly coming together further up my range...my honest opinion is subscribe to Carls videos and watch them especially as it relates to compression (I watched pretty much all of them) and get some lessons too (plug!) I have been around the block a bit and listened to my fair share of singing "experts" and I can tell you from personal experience there are some charlatans out there masquerading as the real thing who will happily take your money which in itself is not as bad as the time wasted on incorrect techniques which wont advance your singing. I Paid £600 to a well known "expert" for his "open throat" advice (failed) and paid a local "teacher" who had me walking round the block holding my breath for as many strides as I could muster to add to my ability to sustain notes FFS! (what about just getting your chords closer together so you just don't dump as much air ya donut!!!) Just recently I watched as another "expert" said that you need to take a breath like a surprise to open your throat up so you can get more power in head voice - again listen to Carls videos and try out what he says before you try anything else. I am no great singer BUT I know that I can do more now than before I met Carl and I can sing higher with more confidence and power than I had before.

My story is identical as yours...it took me 5 years, to discover my head voice! it was 2 weeks ago, the trick really is dont push to much and dont panic be relaxed.. same here ( thanks Carl )
@cwehden
@cwehden 6 лет назад
love this, yeah don't panic is essential I have to remind myself of this constantly. Agree though any coach who talks about 'open throat' can be disregarded it's a vague term that isn't anywhere near specific enough and could be interpreted in a million different ways. I'm slowly getting better at this coaching and singing, in a few years time I'm confident people will see where I'm coming from more clearly.

If your having trouble getting into head voice the best thing to do sing "ooh" and "EE" in scales start low and work your way up, dont force the air (less is more!) these vowels naturally forces head and nasal resonance needed for head voice. Guys, dont make the mistake thinking head voice is the same as falsetto they are soooo NOT the same! Falsetto is disconnected where as Head Voice is connected
@bryanedako8897

OK I'm going to tell my story in details cuz this is amazing. And I really want to thank you Carl.ive been watching tutorials on finding head voice since 2014.i watched this at February and honestly I already lost hope, I told my self I needed to meet a coach in person. Years before,I already saw a video of you talking about vocal fry.i took it for granted cuz of how easy it was .but this time after watching all the head voice exercises and nothing worked,I had nothing to lose.i started doing this on a bike and people thought I was crazy, till sometime last week I was singing 'I'll never love again' by lady gaga and towards the climax i was surprised my voice got into somewhere i wasn't forcing to hit the notes,i was hitting it i felt i had so much more power above, wasn't sure it was head voice, till i noticed even my falsetto became stronger like Sam Smith's and I kept doing this and omg my range just doubled my falsetto is powerful now . So this is my second comment on RU-vid ever cuz today i got much more vowels in this.when i panic i still go in and out of it back to chest voice but the more i practice the better i get.this is my way of giving back to you because i know us guys we struggle alot with high notes and it's very discouraging especially when ur singing with a girl.so honestly guys .do this,cuz now I'm singing freddy mercury and i can't believe it's me .THANK YOU SO MUCH

I had the same issue. What helped me was trying to do it really quietly almost like a whisper with slight volume and just try to sing a note in chest voice and go up. Once you feel the strain let go and you will just keep going higher. Ik this is a bad explanation so please ask any questions.

I have 2 octaves of chest voice, and have forgotten how to use my head voice (which I could use until I was about 35). Your first point is key! I panic every time I know I'm going there, and then my throat hurts. I have been singing tenor parts in the choir for 10 years now, and I hope it's not too late!

I can get into head voice easily now. It sounds really twangy and nasal and I can't really sing different vowels in it yet but it's connected without a break and distinct from head voice. Kinda like in the video but more twangy. Do you have any advice/exercises on how to strengthen head voice and learn to be able to actually use it while singing songs? Because if I try actually singing lyrics with it I sound like a dying cat I feel.

Hi Carl, Thanks for you videos! I started watching your videos 6 days ago wanting to find my head voice and it has been quite a journey discovering these higher ranges I never knew I had!! Just with the vocal frying and producing an initial 'squeak' made me realise there was a glimmer of a voice if only I spent time to develop it. I've been practicing everyday 'slowly' getting stronger and 'gradually' higher and also having some brilliant 'Aha' moments when I would sing a familiar song and hearing I could now hit the higher notes and see my progression. Its been emotional at times as I always thought this lower and middle range was my lot. I have just made a donation as you have given me 'hope' to be able to sing like I always wanted to and I would like to have the Skype lessons in a couple of weeks when I feel I have something further to bring. Thanks 👍😊

singing has always been a passion of mine, i’ve been singing my whole life as a kid i was in plays, chorus, and musicals. but as i got into my teen years i stopped singing (which i regret very much) it wasn’t until i was 15 i decided to start making recordings of covers, unfortunately looking back on them i was so embarrassed i deleted them but it’s been 6 years and i know my voice has grown so much! but the problem is i have no real professional vocal coach or lessons. i kinda just practiced songs over and over or just sang all day and eventually my voice came together slowly. but i know i still have so much more to know and i definitely need to learn how to use my head voice, it’s challenging because i’m a ballad/soul singer. so i sing a lot of female led songs and it’s so challenging bc i can’t quite reach those notes yet

Thankyou for your video.I can relate entirely with your comments of a big chest voice range. I have basically a tenor voice which I can extent to around b flat. from low A. in chest voice. In the mornings my range extends to high e in head voice but the stability of my voice is less and I have trouble performing in the mornings because of breaks etc. Later I can sing with confidence but I can not reach the higher notes eg B to say D. Also over the years I think my falsetto voice has disappeared. I have always felt restricted because a high c is what most tenors are judged on. I will work on your great comments, as I have exhausted most other tech-niches.

Hey Carl, I have no sense of head voice. I hit that ceiling of air or tension when ascend in pitch, regardless of volume. Should I be able to accomplish what you demonstrate here in headvoice before I even bother with things like the "buh's" that you do in another video? Should I literally be re-watching this video over and over until I can do what you demonstrate, before I attempt to take my chest voice higher? I have absolutely no head voice, my voice just turns to a hiss when I ascend in pitch. I booked my 2nd lesson with you.

Sometimes, I wake up and my voice is great. I have no idea why this is happening. I can't access the "squeaky door" thing like you're talking about, here. But I used to easily be able. Can you please upload some really REALLY helpful videos on restoring male tenor head voice? Vocal fry? Squeaky door? What happens if NONE of that can be accessed? What's the alternative? You lost it at 35, and how many years has it been now, exactly? Because I've lost my falsetto from 7th grade, can't figure out if it's a puberty thing or what, cuz Iam a boy, but I'm 18 now and it's still not there, there's just a really squeaky forced airy sound there. I can't say that it's a nodule either because there's like a 15% chance for me to have full access to head voice, and when I do, I instantly notice it because my chest voice becomes a lot more agile too. I don't remember the last time that happened, though.

I have an issue, when I sing in head voice itself I feel a break. My easy head voice begins at E4 up to Bb4 (Eb5 on good days), but I feel from B4 that I need to change gears to go higher and I can go with a powerful flute sound up to Bb5, but it's completely disconnected and I don't know where I need to start practicing or doing exercises. Because, when I start in that flute sound I completely break into my easy headvoice register at C5. What do I need to do ? I would love to be able to sing easily around C5
@LightKurusan
@LightKurusan 3 года назад
u need to develop support. The flute sound is falsetto and its in fact disconnected because u use ur larynx to go higher. In head voice its like in chest u need to push with ur support to go higher without raising ur larynx,. U can go to D5 in head voice after u will start to strain. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-n1-eY_A6Rw0.html in this video there are exercices to strenghten ur head voice and not falsetto.

@joelstephenson8017
@joelstephenson8017 3 года назад
@Driftzey it's tricky, but its improving. I try to relax (all I can...), then start to do vocal fry really softly not trying to make any sound, then I chose a note a bit higher than my range, and do vocal fry again and use the w sound to make noise. When it works, sometimes I do it a bit too tight, and it doesn't feel good, but when it works properly, it feels good like a door opening, and your folds zipping. It sounds like a fly or mosquito buzzing. You just have to make sure the larynx is as relaxed as possible, but but the folds feel like they are stretching. It's hard to explain. What I'm trying to do now though is as soon as I make the sound, try and slide down my range back to my normal voice, keeping the folds closed so I can remove the break. It sounds really weird trying it tho...😅
@joelstephenson8017
@joelstephenson8017 3 года назад
@Driftzey vocal fry is when you make a creaking noise with your voice, like a creaking door. You start the sound with it, then let the sound continue without it once the high note comes out. The 'w' sound is like the 'w' when you are about to cry like a baby. You don't really think about the stretch. Once you have an easy high note, your folds have stretched like a rubber band. Try and be really quiet and easy with your sound. As you know, I'm not an expert, I'm just sharing what I've been doing to get sound out (lol), so anyone more experienced might be able to share a better way. I'd be glad if it helps though!

A few months ago my head voice was perfectly fine and easy to come out. However, now it becomes a lot harder and when it comes out, my head voice, it sounds super airy and cracky. And sometimes it doesn’t even come out and only air comes out. Does anyone know why this is happening?

oooh im a female with a male voice (probably something to do with my life long excess testosterone lol) and i feel like you were talking about me. ive got a good deep rich voice, (I think d2 to e6 ish) think pat carroll, i can nail poor unfortunate souls from the little mermaid. but also i can sing somewhere over the rainbow quite easily and most of phantom of the opera scores female parts with a few exceptions. but its all chest! and when i try to get into head voice (especially when singing christine in phantom) i either cant get there, or maybe i will hit it but only last a beat or two before cracking :( This was incredibly helpful, and though i will probably never reach that lovely C7 we all strive for, this helped me practice get into the head voice and breathing work, i think i can get there easier eventually. Thank you so much!

Ok so like ..... I’m a boy and I sing pretty high like I used to be like 😂 soprano and now my voice is just a little deeper like I’m not .... like a bass like I’m not that low yet... I think I’m like an alto ( idk how to spell it ) and like when school was in I always sung in my head voice and now that’s school out for the summer I can’t even get into my head voice and I’m so used to only singing in that tone .... so now that I can’t do it anymore it’s like hard to sing ....kinda lower ( I’m sry I know this is a lot and probably dosent make sense ) but ...... I’m stressed cuz I really like to sing but .... I can’t 😂

Sorry to be the bringer of bad news, but that beautiful high ring might never return. I used to be able to sing a D6 on whim. Mostly likely you've fallen to a baritone range, which is hard to adjust to if you're used to vocally dancing on the descant lines. Do not try to strain and close your vocal cords, as he suggests (he's correct (kind of) about the physics, wrong about the rest) it will not produce the tone or agility you're looking for and is liable to cause injury. My best advice would be to learn how to use the range you're in as best you can.

By headvoice do u mean a strong falsetto? Or do u mean singing in your chest voice but the resonance is in your head as in singing the G4-C5 notes in chest voice?

if you were asking this question of me then what happens is I sing with no strain as I get higher and there's no bump as I cross my break area (E/F) and in fact I can cause the "bump" if I choose to do so for stylistic purposes...I feel the chords thin out as I go higher (how else could I go higher without straining?) and if I lean in to get louder my chords don't blow apart - there is a definite "edge" to my voice and this remains as I go higher up...I practice with compression type exercises (to the annoyance of those around me haha) but it does work...believe me I am no great singer but I can bridge without a break and I have more compression than I did before - not sure I understand your question but if I tried to sing to C5 in chest I just could never do it physically if I understand your question correctly?...I notice my voice thinning at around middle C and then as I go up I notice them trying to come apart at E - F if I'm not careful but they don't (unless I want them to) and after that they thin out more and and I seem to get more compression and therefore volume if I need it (See Carls early videos on compression for the differences between pitch and compression muscles) - I write this in detail for you as I don't know your skill level or where you are in your journey and I know that other people don't always explain everything and this can leave people who are trying to do this more confused than before they asked...when you say "resonance is in your head" yes it is and it travels up through my nose area and then up further into my head but the chords thin out and I don't strain - if you're an expert singer then I apologise for all of this claptrap but just wanted to explain as I am pleased with my progress at the moment and I thought it might help you if you needed it.

Oh I'm sorry, I was askin carl if in this video he is talkin about the falsetto-ish headvoice or if he's talkin about the chesty/mixed voice headvoice. Cause some people define headvoice as falsetto and some define it as your belt/mixed voice

I just mean singing high without pushing you could call it many things head / false / release etc. This video is for people who can't get into head voice at all like when I started nothing above middle C without pushing.

I believe that head voice is like a developed falsetto, and that the falsetto can be expanded with no break into head voice, Sometimes the more you analyze the more confused it becomes. No I think it is impossible to sing a high c with chest voice. I hate sopranos it sounds so simple!!!
